ABC stands for Arts Basics for Children. It is a multifunctional building including a cinema, theatre, ateliers etc. They invite families and schools to let children explore the aesthetic, economic and socio-political dimensions of design, science and art. ABC+ is a complete additional program, allowing these small groups to stay overnight at the ABC house. This addition is realised as an extra layer; a self-made skin developped through a process of material & form studies. The result is a sponge-like plaster structure. Depending on the scale of the bubble, functions and spaces can be differentiated. Both dense areas with smaller holes for darker spaces or much wider holes to actually sleep in.

Maggie’s / Kalida Centre Barcelona, Spain Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. The centres are places to find practical advice about benefits and eating well; places where qualified experts provide emotional support; places to meet other people; places where you can simply sit quietly with a cup of tea. Maggie’s Barcelona will be the first Centre in mainland Europe. Designed by Miralles Tagliabue EMBT it will be built as a small pavilion inbetween the historic and the new Sant Pau Hospital site. It’s Mediterranean version will be called Kalida Centre.

Church & Parish complex of San Giacomo Ferrara, Italy The church & parish complex of San Giacomo is proposed as a catalyst for the area in which it is introduced, creating identity within the local community by promoting socialization, eduscation and interaction. The building is erected from its conceptual memory, based on the structure of a hot air balloon. It’s designed to have a welcoming presence that is open to the people, doing so through the use of lightweight organic architecture that contrast with the robust and compact materiality of the historically important preexisting Ferrara. The complex controls the scene with sculptural forms while maintaining a dialogue with the surrounding nature by using a formal language inspired by it. collage Š EMBT

In Between Inside & Outside What is the spacial relation between ‘the inside’ & ‘the outside’? What’s the relation between the viewer and the object? These research questions form the basis of a master thesis. The original research mainly directs to the way a private dwelling hidden and reveals. The unveiling of the hidden results from a curiosity. The tension field between the private, seen as the hidden, and the public, the revealed of a home creates a certain border with 2 sides; inside & outside. Between those, the facade can be seen as a symbolic border. How can this border pose itself in space? And what’s the hole through the wall? A conceptual installation of a methaforic ‘cloud’, seen as the hypothetical in-between space, explains the study of this border. A concrete think model shows an application of the in-between spaces. The mobility of the border and the ability to blur the border are being used as a design tool. image on p.24 conceptueal representation of field investigation on the hidden and revealed of a private dwelling

Experimental workshop called MatLab with non-obvious materials, in this case, TeforÂŽ. TeforÂŽ are sheets based on recycled laminate and plastic. By sliding techniques we created an object which can be used in many different ways. You can sit in it while reading, or storage things in it such as bottles, books, plants etc.

Caracas, Informal Settlements Reformulated Research about the current situation of the informal settlements in the ‘barrios’ of Caracas leads to the constatation of the lacking infrastructure and overall clarity. Different families are forced to live very closely together in poor conditions & with a shocking lack of safe structures. To solve these often very dangerous situations we created a new conceptual construction system. This structural system is a tabula rasa of 4 by 4m. It provides electricity, water, accesibility, safety & storage by already existing upcycling local techniques. A group of families, existing of 3 or 4 generations, can start this building box by box around the structural core. The flexibility of this easy buildable and affordable system also allows the interaction & connection with the social activities on the street. It offers a opportunity to the inhabitants to open a small business or collective storage system. We applied this system hypothetically on a existing site, a typical narrow dangerous space, in the barrio Bello Campo in Caracas, Venezuela.
