A Word From David: April 2010 It’s that time of year when bus owners start to drive their Type 2s more and more – SPRING! I have a few questions for you: Is your bus ready to be driven? Need a transmission swapped? Need some work/tuning on your engine? Need some welding done on your battery tray? Are your brakes up to the task on So. Cal freeways? One of the issues that was brought up at the “Emergency Member Meeting” we had back on March 13th was the fact that we don’t do as many “Work Days” to fix each others’ buses. There was a time in SV2s when restoring, maintaining, and driving our buses was the focus of the club. We’ve gotten away from this. My goal is to bring this back. The club by-laws state: “The purpose of this club is to assist our members with the preservation and restoration of their transporters to the best of our abilities.” We have focused so much of our energy on the shows we organize, on promoting these shows, and on promoting SV2s to other potential bus owners by attending other clubs’ shows in Southern California that all we’re truly doing is work, work, work, work, and work!! With this as our focus, what are we really offering SV2s members? WORK! It’s time to REFOCUS our energy back to the foundation of SV2s: HELPING EACH OTHER keep our buses on the road. Don’t be afraid to ask. Show up at your chapter meeting and talk to your Chapter Rep. Set a date. Offer to buy the food, the beer, and the sodas, perhaps even rent a jumper, so members can bring their kids, and get working on your bus. That’s what this club is here for. On a side note, I know summer is around the corner and buying a jacket is probably the last thing you need to buy, but I am working on a design and figuring out the cost to get us some “Special” member jackets done. Stay tuned, I will keep you posted. David out.

Pyro’s “Coast –to-Coast Adventures” Continued

Story & Photos by Ivan & Edlinda Justicia

From there it was a good long drive all the way to a campground just east of Tallahassee called Three Rivers because, well, 3 rivers converge right there to form a huge lake. I felt like Sarah Palin ‘cause from our site I could see Georgia! Believe it or leave it, this was the first and only campground were we had enough time to sit down and enjoy a campfire. In the morning, we headed straight out east until we finally got to the east coast at Daytona Beach! Well, truthfully it actually is Ormond Beach which is north of Daytona Beach and much more of a beach too. Daytona Beach is not really that long. So we drove into the sand, stop for the sand “exchange” (dropped off the west coast sand and picked up some east coast sand), and continued down to the Ponce Inlet Light House. After that, we headed southwest towards Spring Hill which is 50 miles north of Tampa and where Edlinda’s family lives. The drive took us 5 days leaving on Saturday and arriving on Wednesday. Somewhere along the way (I’m guessing Florida) one of the new CV joint boots tore open and spewed grease over the muffler. So on Thursday I drove to Fisher Buggies in downtown Tampa to by new boots. Another “small” but LOUD issue was the muffler itself, being that sidewinder with the Magnaflow. It was so loud that after 2 days I opted to not even turn on the radio since it had to be played so loud it sounded like crap. So coming out of San Diego we stopped at Latest Rage in Alpine and picked up a spark arrestor in order to quiet it down some. On Friday there was this cruise and get together in Sarasota (a bit south of Tampa) organized by Kip Zimmerman who owns a shop called “Rare & Unique” there. After the cruise we stopped at a restaurant for dinner and I asked Kip if I could use his welder to fix the muffler. He said “Sure!” On to Saturday, I drove in early to the party hosted by Kip at his shop and welded it. The party was the most awesome event I’ve experience in a very long time! Went on ‘til late and lots of people spent the night right there as I did. In the very early morning, I woke up along with some folks from Georgia which I hung out with at the party, and headed back up to Tampa for the Bulli Brigade. Wow! What an awesome venue for a vintage split bus show! Grassy areas full of trees and with vintage buildings all throughout. I was the third one in! Met a bunche new people as well as getting to see a few folks I met before and some of the “regulars” who don’t miss any event no matter where it’s happening. The awards for this very lax show were pretty cool too and though I drove all the way from San Diego, I got beat

by Greg & Clara who drove from Washington State! Did have a great time anyway and got to talk to Clara herself for a bit too. Sunday’s event wasn’t so well enjoyed though. Quite a few issues made it so. Not having “pre-registered” I was directed to “the back lot” and to the very back of it since I came in so early. Soon as the back lot got filled, those non pre-registered that came in late, got to park along with the rest of the pre-registered field! Also, those who did not pre-registered were judged “differently” than those who did!?!?! In any case, I had a funny feeling about this event but just as with the Bugorama in Vegas, I wanted to experience the whole weekend’s events and I did. Don’t know if I would pull this off again but if I do, it will be when I’m retired and have plenty of $$$ to do it. Now, plan “A” turned into plan “B” and already it has changed a few times. I think I’m into about plan “J” now! See, there’s another huge weekend show in Miami at the end of January, with yet another greater one in February in Daytona! So the “plan” went from just leaving the Dormy behind to do the Daytona one then take another week off later to drive it back, to ALSO do the Miami show!!! As of now, plan “J” is to fly in for the Miami show, fly back, then fly in yet again to do the Daytona weekend, THEN finally drive it back to San Diego the week immediately following that event!!! And that’s not even counting the weekend of BBB in Havafew!!!

Kip’s Rare and Unique Party

by Paul Schuerenberg Hi, I’m Paul Schuerenberg and my bus is a ’67 SO42 Westie who goes by the name of Gold Rush. She (and Gold Rush is definitely a she) and I have been together since August 1983 and have had many adventures. I’ll try and preview them in this article and flesh them out in other articles which I will feed to Tony to use as filler. The bus has gone through 4 color schemes, original ivory color (whose real name I can’t remember), red and silver, burgundy and gold, and the present Viper Blue and gold. In 1983 I was a Navy Chief Petty Officer on a nuclear

Storm in January 1990 and recovered three weeks later before I even knew she was gone (no calls home at that time from a ship at sea). In 1996 I found out about a bus club called Strictly Vintage II’s and joined as member #99. I’ve met some hard and fast friends within the club and Esperanza and I have had some great times, some of which I might talk about in future articles. submarine, USS Drum. I had just returned from a 6 month deployment and mentioned to my brother-in-law that I needed a second car since my wife was now driving. He was a mechanic at the now defunct Kearny Mesa Volkswagen and said that someone had just traded in a ’67 that he thought I could get for a decent price. I had never owned a Volks, but a few days and $1200 later I had a camper. A couple of weeks after that I took two weeks of vacation and our first road trip began. My mother had flown to San Diego from Tennessee and elected to go back in the bus when we told her our plans. Our group consisted of my wife, me, my mother, our daughters of 22 months and 2 ½ years, and my wife’s 11 year old niece. We stopped at rest areas to sleep, with my mother in the front seat and the rest of us on the z-bed. Otherwise it was pit stops and one short stay in an Oklahoma state park for showers. We had a blast. A photo of that trip is included. We’ve also had trips 1200 miles south of the border in Mexico and one memorable December crossing of Donner’s Pass with chains on. I commuted from San Diego to San Luis Obispo weekly for 3 years during a period when I had left active duty. That was a 6 hour drive each way and had it’s own complete set of adventures, mostly repairs of varying complexity in locations as the need arose. On the return side of a club caravan to Ensenada my engine sucked a valve just this side of Ensenada and I made it home at a maximum 25 MPH and kept pouring in oil with the engine running. I made it to my driveway and backed in, then turned the engine off. When I tried to turn it over 10 minutes later she was frozen solid. That was on a Sunday and I worked on her during the week after work - disassembling, buying parts, cleaning and reassembling. Friday night at about 9:00 I was rewarded by the powerful roar of a once again healthy 1600 single port. I went back to active duty in 1989 and she was stolen from in front of my house while I was deployed to Desert
