Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, 2014 was a year of both reflection and looking forward. We examined the many lessons learned from our long history of developing top-notch programs and curricula to teach about the law and civics. And we looked to the future to anticipate the needs of the communities we serve and evaluate the ever-changing role of technology in our work. These reflections—and a lot of hard work by our staff and board—resulted in a new strategic framework to guide us.

Street Law’s new strategy has several key elements, including honing our menu of program offerings to ensure that each one is best-in-class, prioritizing measuring the impact of our programs, and strengthening our partnerships with the legal and education communities that have been the key to Street Law’s success for more than four decades.

In addition to developing a powerful strategy, Street Law added an important mission-focused tool to its arsenal. We worked with our publishing partner, McGraw-Hill Education, to co-author the 2016 edition of its high school government text—United States Government: Democracy in Action. This text has the potential to bring Street Law’s trademark interactive teaching strategies into thousands of additional classrooms across the United States.

Beyond our borders, we teamed up with Georgetown University Law Center’s Street Law Clinic to help six Russian law schools build and implement Street Law programs. Additionally, embassies and other law schools from around the world have stepped up their requests for assistance from us, signaling a renewed interest in strengthening civil society around the globe.

And at the end of 2014, we began work on the 9th edition of our flagship high school law textbook—Street Law: A Course in Practical Law. This edition, which will be available in summer 2015, will be offered in both e-book and traditional textbook formats. It has a fresh new design; updated Supreme Court cases and social science data; and new materials on same-sex marriage, the Affordable Care Act, and intellectual property.

With a new strategy, cutting-edge curricular tools, an expanding network of corporate and law firm partners, a renewed interest in our work in post-conflict and developing countries, and a supportive team of funders and donors (like you!) who make our work possible, we look forward to a successful 2015!

About Us Our mission: Street Law advances justice through classroom and community education programs that empower people with the legal and civic knowledge, skills, and confidence to bring about positive change for themselves and others.

We have more than 40 years of experience developing programs and curricula that teach young people about the law and how to use it as a positive force in their lives.

We believe that to achieve a just and fair world, all people need to understand how law and government work, how to effectively advocate for themselves and others, and that they can and should participate in civic life. We also believe that providing this foundation to all people is a community responsibility that is best accomplished through collaboration between the legal and education sectors.

Our works falls into five categories: • Professional development for teachers that helps social studies teachers improve the way they teach about law and government • Legal community partnership programs that tap the knowledge of lawyers, law students, and other legal professionals to teach young people about law and legal careers • Legal life skills programs that empower underserved populations with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive • Global law and democracy programs that help cultivate a rule of law culture around the world • Curricula and content that are relevant to students’ lives and delivered via interactive, student-centered teaching strategies

Professional Development for Teachers We help prepare social studies teachers to use proven methods for building students’ civic skills and improving students’ civic knowledge and participation.

Supreme Court Summer Institute www.streetlaw.org/scsi

This nationwide program strengthens and expands instruction about the Supreme Court of the United States through professional development for social studies teachers. Since 1995 we have trained more than 1,200 teachers who have in turn impacted over 300,000 students.

This initiative is funded by and delivered in partnership with the Supreme Court Historical Society.

Civics & Civil Rights Institute This professional development institute helps social studies teachers expand their knowledge and learn new methods for teaching about civil rights. Teachers examine key periods in both past and present civil rights movements, as well as legal concepts and civil rights issues related to public policy, civic engagement, and advocacy.

This program is part of our Closing the Gap initiative and is funded by the Norflet Progress Fund.

Legal Community Partnership Programs We connect volunteers from the legal community with young people in school, community, and justice system settings to teach about law and legal careers and serve as powerful role-models.

Legal Diversity Pipeline Programs www.streetlaw.org/acc & www.streetlaw.org/nalp Street Law partners with corporate law departments and law firms to tackle the dearth of diversity in the legal profession. The Pipeline Programs encourage young people of color to pursue legal careers by providing them with role models, career education, and hands-on experiences in the field of law. Our staff trains volunteer legal professionals and law students to teach students in diverse high school classes about law and pathways to the legal profession.

54 companies and ACC chapters, nine national law firms, and six law schools currently participate at more than 105 locations across North America. Collectively, more than 1,000 volunteers reach approximately 4,500 students per year.

Law School Programs www.streetlaw.org/lawschools More than 100 law schools around the world have active Street Law programs that teach young people about the law, while providing law students with a powerful educational experience.

Street Law, Inc. provides program resources and teaching materials, connects participating law schools, and assists in the development of new programs.

Making Positive Choices We designed an employee volunteer program for Merck that brings legal life skills lessons to vulnerable youths in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Street Law recruits, trains, and places Merck employees in classroom and community-based settings to teach lessons on conflict resolution, safety, advocacy, and career exploration.

This program is funded by the Merck Foundation.

Educating About IP Law We partnered with the International Trademark Association (INTA) and Constitutional Rights Foundation to teach teenagers about trademarks and counterfeiting issues.

In 2014 INTA members taught Street Law IP lessons in 33 classrooms across the country.

INTA supports Street Law’s intellectual property law education initiatives.

Teaching About Immigration Law & Policy We work with the American Immigration Council to improve the teaching of immigration law and policy in high schools on Long Island, NY. Participating teachers are paired with lawyers who serve as content experts for classroom lessons. As a culminating project, students from different schools participate in a forum where they learn and exchange ideas about the latest immigration policy proposals. In 2014 we trained 25 teachers to participate in the program.

The Hagedorn Foundation provided funding for the pilot of this program.

Legal Life Skills Programs These programs bring the legal and civic knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive to the people who need it most—vulnerable and underserved populations of all ages.

Youth in Transition www.streetlaw.org/yit Youth in Transition empowers young people with practical legal knowledge presented through interactive lessons that promote cooperative learning and critical thinking and build life skills.

Law firm and corporate volunteers work with homeless/runaway youths, teens aging out of the foster care system, crossover youths, young people transitioning from juvenile detention, LGBTQ youths, and young people in community centers and transitional living facilities nationwide.

This program is funded by Allstate, Jackson Lewis P.C., the Price Family Charitable Fund, and individual donations.

Save Our Streets www.streetlaw.org/sos For three decades Street Law has partnered with the District of Columbia Superior Court to equip pre-adjudicated youths and youths on probation with practical legal knowledge and problem-solving, communication, and conflict resolution skills. Participating young people attend weekly classes that teach them about the laws and public policies related to their charges and how to access community resources and work effectively with law enforcement and lawyers.

This program is funded by the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

Global Law & Democracy Programs We collaborate with law schools, civil society organizations, and government agencies around the globe to design and implement legally accurate, culturally competent programs that help cultivate a rule of law culture.

Russian Law School Exchange Program www.streetlaw.org/lawschools We are helping build and strengthen several law school-based Street Law programs throughout Russia. Through a partnership with the Russia-based Center of Development of Legal Clinics and the D.C. Street Law Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center, we have implemented an exchange program between Russian and U.S. law schools that prepares law students to teach about practical law, rule of law, and civic engagement in their communities.

This program is funded by a grant through the U.S. Embassy in Moscow’s Peer-to-Peer Dialogue (P2P) program.

Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Democracy Education Program Street Law partnered with CIEE to bring civic and democracy education to scores of young people from around the globe who come to U.S. for summer jobs. In 2014 Street Law-trained educators taught lessons at 22 sites across the country.

This program is funded by CIEE.

Through the support of the Asia Foundation, Street Law will work to build and strengthen Street Law programs at law schools across Indonesia.

Curricula We are experts at developing relevant law and civics content delivered via interactive, student-centered teaching strategies. Our lessons and materials help students build legal and civic knowledge and develop critical civic skills.

United States Government Textbook www.streetlaw.org/govt_text United States Government: Our Democracy is a new and improved high school government program co-authored

by Street Law. It not only teaches students about government, it teaches them how to “do democracy.”

The Street Law Textbook www.streetlaw.org/law_text Street Law: A Course in Practical Law is the nation’s bestselling high school law text. First published in 1975 and now in its eighth edition, the text has played an important role in adding law courses to school systems across the United States.

Community College Textbook www.streetlaw.org/cc_text Street Law: Understanding Law and Legal Issues is a lawbased civic learning text for use in community colleges.

It promotes civic engagement by providing practical information about areas of law that affect the daily lives of U.S. residents and activities that develop analytic and advocacy skills.

The development and distribution of these texts are supported by McGraw-Hill Education, our long-standing publishing partner.

U.S. Supreme Court Materials LandmarkCases.org This content-rich website covers 17 pivotal Supreme Court cases—from Marbury v. Madison to Texas v. Johnson.

It provides 110 free instructional activities to 10,000 registered users.

SCOTUS in the Classroom www.streetlaw.org/mootcourt This online resource provides teachers with the materials they need to conduct simulations of current, relevant Supreme Court cases in real time, as they are argued at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Case Summaries & Lessons www.streetlaw.org/resource_library Our online resource library contains free classroom-ready summaries of scores of cases (from 1999–today) and lessons on granting certiorari, nominating justices, elements of a case study, and more.

These resources are funded by and developed in partnership with the Supreme Court Historical Society.
