Street Dance Magazine e streetdancemagazine.it si sono posti l’obiettivo di colmare un gap cronico nella scena street dance italiana.

In un momento in cui l’informazione è frammentaria e confusionale, abbiam voluto aprire un’ampia finestra sulla streetdance italiana e mondiale, valorizzando il punto di vista e le esperienze dei più grandi artisti internazionali, dei professionisti e degli eventi più meritevoli di considerazione. Attraverso le loro parole, siamo sicuri si possa fare una buona comunicazione, ricevendo stimoli e ampliando la nostra conoscenza e consapevolezza. Senza informazione non c’è cultura.

Street Dance Magazine and streetdancemagazine.it set themselves the target to plug a chronic gap in the Italian Street Dance scene.

In a period where information is fragmentary and confuse we wanted to open a wide window about street dance, in Italy and around the world, increasing the point of view and the experience of the biggest interational artists, of pro and of the events which deserve more consideration. Through their words, we’re sure it will be a good comunication, reciving incentives and wideing our knowledge and consciousness. Without information there is no culture!

Cosa significa essere un OG e quali responsabilità comporta?

Il significato di OG nell’hip hop oggi ha una terminologia errata. OG in origine sta per Original Gangster. Ora questo termine viene usato per riferirsi a chi ha una storia nel passato.

Io non voglio essere un OG, voglio essere il presente.

What does it mean to be an OG and which responsibilities come with that?

The meaning of OG is a wrong term today in hip hop. OG originally stands for Original Gangster, this is what it really means. Now they use this term referred to someone with a history from the past. I don’t want to be an OG. I want to be the present.

I membri più anziani della cultura hip hop in Europa parlano sempre di com’era la cultura hip hop della loro generazione e guardano sempre al passato. Non credi sarebbe più giusto prendere il meglio da ciascuna generazione vivendo il presente?

Beh, posso essere d’accordo con questo ‘sguardo al passato’. Non bisogna dimenticarlo ed aiuta a modellare il futuro. Se si guarda e si impara dal passato ci aiuterà a sapere cos’è reale e cosa non lo è. Dici che sarebbe più giusto guardare al meglio di ogni generazione, ma ciò che ti rende migliore è la conoscenza e l’amore per ciò che c’era prima e dopo di te, non solo per il movimento.

The classic hip hop culture members in Europe always talk about the hip hop culture of their past generation in a past perspective. Don’t you think it would be better to take the best from each generation living the present?

Well, I can agree with this ‘looking at the past’.

You don’t forget it and it helps shaping the future. If you look and learn from the past it will only help you to know what’s real and what’s not. You say it’s best to look to the best of each generation, but what does it make you the best is knowledge and love for what came before you and what comes after you, not just the movement.

Sei stato molte volte in Italia, come pensi si viva la cultura hip hop nel nostro Paese?

Non posso realmente rispondere a questa domanda, perché non sono ancora stato abbastanza per vedere come la gente vive.

Posso parlare per i contest di danza che ho visto o giudicato. Vivere l’hip hop è più della sola competizione. La competitività porta le persone nello stesso posto, ma non significa che stiano vivendo l’hip hop.

Vecchio contro Giovane, Esperienza contro Fame. Chi vince?

Se si tratta di un battle dipende dal momento, ma non si può affermare che chi vince, lo fa perché più vecchio o più giovane. La fame per la conoscenza di ciò che stai facendo invece vincerà sempre.

Cosa pensi delle persone che si definiscono ballerini/insegnanti/ coreografi senza avere alcuna esperienza, o di chi insegna un dato stile senza averlo mai studiato prima?

Come fermare tutto ciò?

Li definisco non-artisti. Non hanno amore per ciò che fanno, perché se lo amassero davvero si prenderebbero il tempo per imparare tutto

You’ve been many times in Italy, what do you think about how Italy lives the hip hop culture?

I can’t really answer this question, ‘cause I haven’t really been there to see people living. I just can say something about dance competitions I’ve seen or judged. Living hip hop is more than just competition. Competition just brings people in the same place, but this doesn’t mean you’re living hip hop.

Old vs Young, Experience vs Hunger.

Who’s gonna win?

If it’s a battle, it all depends on the moment, but we can’t say someone wins ‘cause it’s older or younger. The hunger for knowledge of what your doing is always going to win instead.

What do you think about people calling themselves dancer/teacher/coreographer having no experience, or people who teaches a style without any study of it before? How to stop that?

I call them non-artist. They have no love for what they’re doing, ‘cause if they loved it that much they would actually take the time out, to learn all about it out of the dance they are teaching as well. There is no real way to stop them, unless dancers start asking questions about what they are learning, about the steps they are learning.

quello che c’è da imparare anche al di fuori della danza che stanno insegnando. Non c’è un vero modo per fermarli, a meno che i ballerini non inìzino a fare domande su ciò che stanno imparando e sui passi che stanno imparando.

Qualche consiglio per ballerini e futuri ballerini?

Il mio consiglio è semplice, per ballerini e futuri ballerini. Ballate solo per una ragione: perché amate farlo, e se lo farete per questo e vi definirete ballerini, allora lo siete. Non ci sono futuri ballerini.

Any advice for dancers and for the becoming dancers?

My advice is simple. Just dance for only one reason: because you love it that much, and if you’ll do this and if you’ll call yourself a dancer then you are one. There is not a becoming one.

Quest’anno in Italia, il 23 Febbraio, c’è stato il Dance@Live. Puoi parlarci un po’ di quest’evento?

Da otto anni Dance@Live è uno dei maggiori battle 1vs1 del Giappone, io stesso l’ho vinto due volte. Ora si sta ingrandendo e si sono aggiunte delle categorie, per i ragazzi del college, per i kids ed un crew battle. Da due anni a questa parte è un evento importante, ha un buon concept. Credo che il Giappone abbia bisogno di qualcosa di questo tipo, per apprezzare le regole del battle ed aprire la mente. Funziona.

Si dice: “Quando pensi di fare qualcosa bene, ci sarà sempre un ragazzo asiatico che la fa meglio”.

Perché?

Per quel che riguarda noi giapponesi, ci alleniamo sulle foundations del ballo, non importa quale sia lo stile. Prima di apprenderlo impariamo come muovere il nostro corpo, come prendere il beat ed il ritmo in ogni categoria. Penso sia perché ci alleniamo per anni, per cui gli asiatici - in particolare i giapponesi - raggiungono poi un tale livello. Dopodiché apprendiamo la tecnica. Quindi all’inizio ci sono le basi, che sono molto importanti. Ho notato che però ad oggi forse c’è troppa focalizzazione sulle basi, a volte necessiteremmo di più creatività per esprimerci. Impariamo le moves dalle foundations e dalle basi, non nascono nella nostra mente, perciò noi giapponesi dobbiamo lavorare su questo. Ecco ciò che penso. Ma resta comunque che il livello di tutti i giapponesi è veramente ottimo.

Come si potrebbe importare un po’ della vostra ferrea disciplina in Europa?

Per noi è una questione di tradizione e cultura.

Non siamo persone pigre, studiamo per ore, è un fattore culturale. Impariamo da subito come restare umili, dobbiamo rispettare ogni cosa: rispettare ciò che si sta facendo. Ecco perché abbiamo una disciplina tanto ferrea.

Qui in Europa la gente ama ballare, ama la musica ed anche qui c’è disciplina, solo che è diversa. I giapponesi stanno sempre facendo qualcosa, si tengono impegnati, ma a volte questo non è un bene, poiché ci si trova ad imparare a ballare come se fosse un lavoro o lo studio, senza ‘sentirlo’.

Ballare è una cosa che parte da dentro.

On the 23rd of February in Italy Dance@Live took place. Can you introduce us a little this event?

Dance@Live is one of the biggest 1by1 battle in Japan in the last since 8 years already and I won twice. Now they’re getting bigger and they added more categories, for college students, kids and a crew battle.Since two years. It’s a big event, a good concept.

I think Japan needs something like this to join the battle rules and to open its mind. It works.

We used to say: “When you think you’re doing it well, there will be always an asian guy who is doing it better than you do”. Why? Speaking for japanese people, we train the foundations of dancing, no matter which style is, before we get into a style we learn from each category how to move your body, how to catch the beat and the rhytm.

I think it’s because we train for years, so asian people - especially japanese people get this level.

After that we get the tecnique. So at the beginning there’s just the basic, which is very important.

But now I found out that there is too much focus on the basics, sometimes we need more creativity to express ourselves.

Because we learn moves from foundations and basic, not from our mind, and we need to work on that. That’s my opinon for Japanese people. But all the Japanese level is really good.

How to bring a little bit of your strong discipline in Europe?

For us it’s a traditional thing, a culture thing.

We are not lazy, we study for hours, it’s our culture. We learn how to stay humble all the time, we have to respect everything: respect for what you’re doing.

That’s why we have a really strong discipline.

Here the people like dance, like the music, they have discipline also here, but just in a different way. Japanese people is always doing something, always busy, but sometimes it’s better here.

Because we learn how to dance like work, or study, without a feeling it. Dancing starts from inside.

So we enjoy the good side of that, but we also have to cope with the bad one.

Cosa pensi dell’Europa?

La scena europea si sta espandendo, gli europei la supportano ed abbiamo bisogno di loro (voi). Ad oggi molti paesi organizzano molti eventi al fine di condividere la passione ed il sentimento per il ballo. Anche in Giappone, in alcuni paesi dell’Asia ed in America questo avviene, ma non così tanto come in Europa. Ora tutti hanno gli occhi puntati sulla scena europea. Penso sia una cosa buona, poiché porta la gente a studiare, a voler capire cosa stanno facendo ed a condividerlo. I ballerini europei stanno diventando molto forti, hanno buone creatività, forza ed energia. Necessitano soltanto di praticare maggiormente le basi.

Devono concentrarsi e focalizzarsi sulle basi. è semplice, ma non facile.

Semplice è l’aggettivo migliore, perché la semplicità fa sempre la differenza. Se capiranno questo, gli europei potranno essere i ballerini più forti del mondo. Ho tratto molta ispirazione dai ballerini europei, anche se sono più vecchio la cosa non ha nessuna importanza. Ora la scena europea sta migliorando e crescendo e questo mi piace.

What do you think about Europe?

Now the European dance scene is getting bigger, Europeans do support the scene, we need them. Nowadays many countries are organizing many events to share the feeling for dancing. In Japan, in some Asian countries and in America as well, but not that much. Now everybody is looking up to the European scene. I think it’s a good thing because people study and try to understand what we are doing and we can also share it.

European dancers are getting really strong, they have good creativity, good power and energy, they just need to run more basic.

They have to concentrate, they have to focus on the basics. It’s simple but it’s not easy. Simple is the best, because simple makes always difference. It’s deeper. If people will understand that point, Europeans can be the biggest dancers in the world. I got many inspirations from the European dancers, even if I’m older, I don’t care. Now the European scene is improving and I like it.

Yak Films. Com’è iniziata?

Abbiamo cominciato per le strade di Oakland. Stavamo lavorando con molti ballerini che erano venuti a farci visita mentre lavoravamo allo Youth UpRising Community Center di East Oakland, in California. è stato un periodo molto divertente e creativo. Postavamo i nostri video su youtube per condividerli con i nostri amici e la comunità di Oakland. Non avremmo mai pensato di arrivare fin qui!

Che cos’è il Turfing?

TURF sta per Taking Up Room on the Floor.

Questo stile di ballo nasce dalla cultura hyphy di Oakland e della Bay Area, dove la gente si ritrova per eventi, party, serate e si scatena.

Lo stile di danza può essere descritto come ‘sciolto’, comico e generalmente racconta una storia. I battle underground di turfing in California sono stati anche influenzati dai ballerini e freestyler di New York, che hanno un proprio stile chiamato flexin’.

Nei battle di turfin’ oggi vi è un unione di entrambi gli stili.

Come mai siete partiti dal ballo?

Sin dall’inizio, YAK Films è stata una collaborazione tra ballerini e filmmaker. Nel luogo in cui abbiamo iniziato, gli stili di danza locali avevano qualcosa di interessante da catturare su pellicola. Quando si combina il tutto con della gran musica, ecco ciò che fa YAK Films ad oggi.

Pensate di sviluppare la vostra playlist experimental su youtube?

Per il futuro siamo interessati a filmare a promuovere anche gli altri nostri interessi, sicuramente. Molte persone ci fanno questa domanda, credo che la playlist experimental riguardi l’essere ispirati dalla musica e da certe immagini che vogliamo mettere sul beat. Quando l’ispirazione tornerà, posteremo altri video in quella playlist.

Qual è il primo evento/organizzatore che vi ha invitati?

La nostra prima copertura di un evento è stato nella Bay Area, in California, dove abbiamo collaborato con dei promoter e degli eventi locali. Poi per un breve periodo

YAK Films. How did you get started?

We started in the streets of Oakland. We were working with many dancers that visited us while we worked at the Youth UpRising community center in East Oakland, California. It was a very fun and creative time. We were posting and sharing our videos on youtube with our friends and community in Oakland. We never thought it would get this big!

What is Turfing?

TURF is an acronym for Taking Up Room on the Floor. The dance style came out of hyphy culture in Oakland and the bay area where people would go to ‘functions’ or parties and gigs, and go dumb (lose control). The style of the dance can be described as loose, comedic, and normally tells a story. The underground battles of turfing in California were also influenced

by New York dancers and battlers who had their own new style of dance called Flexing. The battle world of turfing today is a collaboration of both styles.

Why did you start with dance?

Since its beginning, YAKfilms was a collaboration between dancers and filmmakers. Where we started, local dance styles had something interesting to capture on film. When you combine that with dope music, that’s what makes YAKfilms today!

Do you think you’re going to develop your own ‘experimental’ playlist on youtube?

In the future we are interested in filming and promoting other interests we have, of course.

Many people are asking this question, I think the experimental playlist is about being inspired by music and certain images we want to put on the beat.

When the inspiration comes again, we’re going to add more videos to that playlist.

What is the first event/organizer that invited you?

Our first event coverage was in the Bay Area -California, where we worked with local promoters and events. We then worked with the World of Dance Tour for a while.

Our first invitation to an international dance event came from Germany’s Battle of the

Appena abbiamo ricevuto maggiori attenzioni da tutto il mondo attraverso internet, ci sono stati offerti grossi budget per progetti in tutta Europa ed il nostro calendario si è riempito velocemente, per la nostra conoscenza di eventi che volevamo personalmente seguire e supportare.

Avete mai sentito il bisogno di ingrandire la vostra crew?

A volte siamo schiacciati dal talento che ci circonda e così ci ritroviamo a filmare parecchio. Stiamo realizzando che il nostro lavoro comporta molti viaggi ed in futuro dovremo avere delle ‘diramazioni’.

Ma per ora preferiamo tenere YAK Films alla formazione originale di tre amici, che rappresentano Danza, Video e Musica.

Come avete iniziato a guadagnare da youtube?

Stavamo producendo dei contenuti originali e fighi e diventare youtube partners in un attimo è stata una conseguenza.

Perché youtube e non vimeo?

Youtube è gratis e facile. Vimeo, al tempo, aveva costi e restrizioni, ma avevamo e tuttora abbiamo un account vimeo.

Qual è il ruolo di ciascuno?

Tutti e tre i membri di YAK Films filmano eventi e producono video di ballo; così è anche per l’editing. Yoram è il principale regista di video, Kash è il presentatore online di YLYK e Ben è l’artista musicale.

Riuscite ad avere una vita privata?

Cosa? Siamo autorizzati ad avere delle vite private?

When did it really turn into a full time job for you?

The big change came in early 2011, when we moved as a team to Paris, France. As we received more attention worldwide through the internet, we were offered larger budgets for projects throughout Europe and our calendar quickly filled up because of our knowledge of events we wanted to personally attend and support.

Did you ever feel the need to enlarge your ‘crew’?

Sometimes we are overwhelmed by the talent around us and so we end up filming quite a bit. We are realizing that our job takes a lot of travel and we may have to have chapters in the future. As of right now, we prefer to keep YAKfilms true to our origins as three friends, who represent Dance, Video and Music.

How did you start to earn money from youtube?

We were producing dope, original content and became youtube partners a while back, and just rolled with it.

Why youtube and not vimeo?

Youtube was free and easy. Vimeo, at the time had costs and restrictions, but we did and still do have a Vimeo account.

Which are the different roles of each one of you?

All the three members of YAKfilms film events and produce dance videos, as well as editing. Yoram is the main video director, Kash is the YLYK online show host and Ben is the music artist.

Do you manage to have a private life?

What? We are allowed to have private lives?

La neve e la pioggia non fermano l’hip hop di Danza in Fiera 2013 Snow and rain didn’t stop hip hop at Danza in Fiera 2013.

L’hip hop?! E chi lo ammazza? Il maltempo no di certo: ci hanno provato la neve, il vento, la pioggia ma niente, signori miei!

L’hip hop di Danza in Fiera ha retto il colpo, rilanciando pesantemente. Vogliamo parlare del Dance@Live con il gotha della scena?

Vogliamo parlare dell’after party post-Street Fighters allo Space?

Vogliamo parlare del 5 Skillz, come sempre ciliegina finale di Danza In Fiera? In realtà ci sarebbe molto da dire, ma in certi casi è proprio meglio non parlarne (specialmente per l’entità dell’after party) o lasciare la curiosità per il prossimo anno e per i recap che stanno emergendo in questi giorni.

Rimane che DIF anche quest’anno è riuscita ad offrire uno spettacolo di altissimo livello, aumentando la qualità della proposta in

Do you wanna talk about Street Fighters after party at The Space? Do you wanna talk about 5 Skillz, as usual, the icing on the cake of Danza in Fiera?

We’d have a lot to tell, but sometimes it’s better to not speak at all (especially considering the extent of the afterparty) or it’s better to arouse curiosity for the next year and for the recaps coming out in these days.

This year DIF still offered a very high level show, increasing the quality of the proposal with the Dance@Live project and the Red Bull Bc One Cypher Italy Wild Card.

In addition to the battles, teachers and artists who were participating brought to the event that ‘little something extra’: let’s think about Babson & Kapela (download Ipad App to watch their showcase at DIF), P Lock, Cico, Swan and the Mike & Ricky’s Showcase during Five Skillz.

To flight to Singapore for Dance@Live Final in front of 10.000 people are Carlos (ITA) for the Hip hop cat., Shorty (ITA) for the Freestyle cat. and Imad Bk (ITA) for the Breakin’ cat. Imad Bk entered automatically in the top 16 roster for Red Bull Bc One Cypher Italy of the 23rd of March in Nonantola (MO) as well. Among the many peaks of the different battles we have to mention the one between Pacman (USA) and Asiz (FRA) during the Freestyle semifinal. The winner of 5 Skillz is the Spotlight Team composed by Enrythm, Shorty, Chicco, Pacman and Imad Bk. A never ending flow of events gave great vibrations to the participants and joy to those who are not so used to that kind too, or those who are not too familiar to battles: warmth, sounds, rhythm, joy… this was Danza in Fiera 2013. Bad weather? No one noticed it.

Contemporaneamente ai battle, gli insegnanti e gli artisti presenti hanno portato quel quid in più alla manifestazione: pensiamo a Babson & Kapela (scarica l’App per iPad per vedere la loro demo a DIF), P Lock, Cico, Swan, ma pensiamo anche allo showcase di Mike & Riky durante al Five Skillz.

Ad ottenere la possibilità di volare a Singapore per la finale del Dance@Live, davanti a 10.000 persone, sono stati Carlos nell’hip hop, Shorty nel freestyle ed Imad Bk nel breakin’, che automaticamente entra nel roster dei top 16 per il Red Bull Bc One Cypher Italy del 23 marzo a Nonantola (MO).

Sicuramente da menzionare, tra gli apici dei vari battle, la sfida tra Pacman (USA) e Asiz (FRA) per la semifinale del freestyle. Il 5 Skillz è stato invece vinto dalla Spotlight Team, formata da Enrythm, Shorty, Chicco, Pacman e Imad Bk. Una serie di elementi concatenati ha regalato grandi vibrazioni ai presenti e gioia anche a coloro che in realtà non sono così abitudinari del genere, o fanno parte del genere con poca dimestichezza con i battle: calore, suoni, ritmo, gioia… questa è stata Danza in Fiera 2013. Ed il maltempo? Chi l’ha mai visto?

Sedici B.Boy si sfideranno sabato 23 marzo a Nonantola (MO), durante il Red Bull BC One Cypher, ovvero le selezioni nazionali per guadagnarsi un posto nella finale mondiale in COREA DEL SUD. La caccia al prossimo “B.Boy World Champion” è iniziata! Al via a febbraio la stagione 2013 del Red Bull BC One, la più grande competizione mondiale di breaking ‘uno contro uno’, che quest’anno festeggia il decimo compleanno.

Prima di dirigersi verso la Corea del Sud per la finale mondiale, il Red Bull BC One farà tappa in ogni angolo del pianeta per selezionare i migliori B.Boy: il vincitore di ogni Cypher (selezioni nazionali) avrà la possibilità di competere in uno dei sei Qualifier (selezioni per area geografica).

L’appuntamento per le selezioni nazionali è dunque previsto per sabato 23 marzo al Vox Club di Nonantola (MO).

Sempre il 23, a partire dalle 15.30 presso il Centro Fenice di Via Canaletto Sud 17

On Saturday, March 23, in Modena, 16 B-Boys will battle at the Red Bull BC One Cypher Italy, the national heat to qualify for a place in the world final in South Korea.

The hunt is on for the next B-Boy world champion! February will see the start of the 2013 season of Red Bull BC One, the world’s top one-on-one B-Boy competition, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Before heading out to South Korea for the world final, Red Bull BC One will be visiting every corner of the planet in search of the world’s best B-Boys.

The winner of each Cypher (national heat) will have the chance to compete in one of the six Regional Finals (intercountry geographical area heats).

The national heat is set to take place on Saturday, March 23, at the Vox Club in Nonantola, Modena.

a Modena, sono previsti tre workshop con i tre giudici della serata: Cico, Junior e Wing.

Sui sedici B.Boy che accederanno al Red Bull BC One Cypher di Modena, dieci sono stati scelti da un panel composto dagli organizzatori degli eventi di breakin’ più importanti in Italia (Monsa, Fabio “Loop” Geloso, Denis Di Pasqua, Giuseppe “Slep” Naglieri, Marco “Foglia” Ghiani) mentre sei Wild Card (chance di accesso) saranno selezionate tramite diverse qualifiche.

La prima Wild Card è stata ottenuta da Walrus dei De Klan al Battle of the Year Italia 2012 nel settembre scorso; il 15 febbraio in Sardegna è stato Yaio degli Ormus Force a guadagnarsi il nullaosta per Nonantola; la terza è andata a Imad Bk, che il 23 febbraio ha conquistato il Dance@Live all’interno della manifestazione “Danza In Fiera” a Firenze; la quarta è stata vinta da Frank N durante la selezione in Sicilia di sabato 2 marzo.

Gli ultimi due posti saranno contesi direttamente durante la giornata del Cypher (23 marzo, Vox Club di Nonantola, ore 19.00).

Sebbene non partecipiate più a battle come crew, il rispetto nei vostri confronti è sempre in aumento.

I veri pionieri sono NextOne a Torino, Memè della Natural Force, Dj Enzo e Dj Elektro a Milano, non noi. Sappiamo che posto ricopriamo all’interno della scena italiana. Piuttosto ci reputiamo dei collanti tra vecchia e nuova generazione. Per noi il rispetto viene prima a livello umano e poi a livello artistico. Senza il primo, il secondo ha poca importanza. Non sentiamo di godere di tutto il rispetto che si dice e non è detto che a livello artistico si debba essere rispettati da tutti; tanto meno lo desideriamo. Sentiamo la fortuna di aver trovato le forze, gli stimoli, l’ispirazione e di esserci rinnovati in modo da poter lasciare qualcosa alle generazioni future. Siamo contenti di vedere che il livello italiano è cresciuto; rimane comunque molto da fare nell’ambito culturale.

Even if you’re not taking part of battles as a crew anymore, the respect for you is constantly increasing.

The real pioneers are NextOne in Turin and Memè from Natural Force Crew, Dj Enzo and Dj Elektro in Milan, not us. We know our place on the italian scene. We consider ourselves as a glue between the new and the old generations. For us, respect comes first for the human side and than for the artistic side; least of all we want it. Without the first one, the second loses importance. We don’t feel respected as much as it’s used to say and it’s not necessarily being respected from everybody on the artistic side; we’re nor really willing it. We feel lucky to find the strength, incentive and inspiration, lucky to have renewed ourselves to leave something to the future generations.

We’re glad to see that the Italian level rose up.

Anyway, there is still a lot to do for the culture.

Meno battle e più scuole (molti di voi ne hanno una); è questa la maturità dell’artista?

Il battle oggi sembra essere l’unico mezzo per esprimersi, ma non è così per noi e tanto meno la scena è solo quello. La crew ha un’età media di 34 anni, i primi battle inerenti la stand up dance arrivarono in Italia intorno al 2004/2005. Già in quel periodo eravamo in una fase matura della nostra vita. Oggi ognuno di noi ha famiglia, alcuni addirittura dei figli, quindi ora ci sono altre priorità.

Questo non vuol dire che ci sentiamo fuori dal meccanismo. La domanda nostra è: il battle può essere l’evoluzione dell’artista? Il concetto di street dance/lavoro è venuto allo scoperto molto tardi in Italia, così quando arrivarono delle proposte concrete da parte di tv, casting, etc., per molte di esse noi eravamo già vecchi, pur avendo fatto quel tipo di esperienze. La voglia di continuare, di diffondere i principi culturali di quest’arte - ed avere uno stile di vita ben preciso e realizzato anche nel privato - ci hanno portato ad intraprendere questa strada. è una questione di scelte.

Less battles, more lessons (the most of you has one school); is this the artist ripeness?

Today, battles seems the only way to express yourself, but for us it’s not like that and the scene is not just about battling. Our crew has a 34 mean age and the first stand up battle came to Italy around 2004/2005. At that time we were already in a mature phase of our life. Today each of us has a family, someone has children, so now we have different priorities. This doesn’t mean we think we are out of the mechanism. Our question is: could the battle be the right evolution for artists?

The street dance/work concept in Italy has been discovered just lately, so when serious proposals came from tv, castings etc., for many of them we were just too old, even if we’ve already get those kind of experiences. The will to go on, to spread out the cultural values of this art (in addition to have a clear and accomplished lifestyle in the private life too) brought us to take this path. It’s about choices.

mai avvenuta in maniera naturale. Per noi è fondamentale il discorso fiducia-amicizia, questo modo di fare a volte ci ha fatto apparire chiusi nei confronti di molti giovani. Ci teniamo a precisare che se vedessimo certi requisiti - e soprattutto dei meriti - a livello umano, saremmo i primi a dare quest’occasione, consapevoli che questo confronto porterebbe solamente nuovi stimoli alla crew. è il disinteresse verso l’aspetto culturale che crea una grande spaccatura. Oggi ci sentiamo di poter dire ancora la nostra e poter far bene anche senza una new generation.

Siete molto uniti e discreti, non usate parole come ‘Fra’ e ‘Bro’: maturità, background o equilibrio?

Viviamo questa cosa serenamente, non abbiamo l’esigenza di essere migliori di qualcun altro, ma essere piuttosto delle persone migliori e di migliorarci nel tempo. Lasciamo che il nostro percorso sia naturale, senza portare stress nella crew. Questo ci ha permesso di essere longevi nel tempo. Le persone allontanate o che si sono allontanate l’hanno sicuramente fatto in seguito ad un processo nato da entrambi. Siamo adulti e senza farci troppi problemi affrontiamo le questioni guardando in faccia la realtà. Le strade si uniscono e si dividono, è tutto naturale! Non usiamo certi termini sopracitati perché non rientrano nel nostro modo di fare, perché spesso questo slang è molto ‘gonfio’ e di conseguenza finto! è come fare pose senza avere attitudine.

Quanto è importante per la scena italiana che esista/inizi/ricominci una comunicazione tra generazioni?

Equivale a dire quanto sia importante che un padre ed un figlio riescano a comunicare. Purtroppo anche l’esterofilia che regna in Italia non dà la giusta credibilità alle vecchie generazioni, pur condividendone concetti ed esperienze. Oggi si è sempre più interessati a sapere la storia della scena originale dimenticando la nostra, cosa che è invece fondamentale per ritrovare un’identità nel panorama internazionale. La mancanza di rispetto peggiora il problema comunicazione, allontanando maggiormente le generazioni. Il confronto è necessario per crescere insieme.

Oggi la possibilità autonoma di ottenere molte informazioni da internet rende più veloce lo scambio delle stesse, ma annulla quasi totalmente lo scambio ed il rapporto umano: tutto è sempre troppo ‘individuale’. Di conseguenza non si sente il bisogno di dire grazie a nessuno.

The indifference toward the culture is always creating a strong disruption. Today we feel confident by expressing our thoughts and to do it right even without a new generation.

You’re very close and discrete, you don’t use words like ‘Bro’ or ‘Dude’: is it a question of maturity, background or balance?

We live this thing peacefully, we don’t feel the desire to be better than someone else, rather being better individuals and to improve. We let our path to be natural, without stressing the crew. That made us last in time. The people we averted or that detached themselves really walked away for a process coming from both sides. We are adults and we deal with problems without worries and honestly facing reality. Paths just link up and split up, it’s a natural thing! We don’t use terms like ‘Bro’ or ‘Dude’ because it’s not proper to our way of doing. This ‘slang’ is very pompous thereby fake! It’s like to strike a pose without attitude.

How much is important for the italian scene the existence/start/re-start of a communication among generations?

It’s the same to say the importance of a communication between father and son.

Unfortunately this Italia xenophilia doesn’t give a proper reliability to the old generations, even if the sharing concepts and experiences are there.

Nowadays it’s always more important to know the history of the original scene and to forget our history, which is fundamental to rediscover our identity in the international panorama. The lack of respect worsen the communication problem, creating a bigger distance among generations. The comparison is necessary to grow together. Today the free chance to get many information from the net makes their exchange much faster, but it nullifies the exchange and connection by the human side: everything is too individual. That’s why nobody feels the need to thanks anybody.

The Altaforum in Campodarsego is going to remain the over-confirmed venue of the event, with the desire to beat the last edition 2800 attendance record. America’s Best Dance Crew, noto anche come ABDC, è un programma di MTV America che nasce dall’idea del cantante e produttore Randy Jackson, nel quale le migliori crew degli Stati Uniti d’America (e non solo) si sfidano per vincere 100.000 dollari.

Il programma è presentato da Mario Lopez e Layla Kayleigh.

Il sistema di punteggio prevede principalmente la votazione da casa tramite internet o telefono, mentre i giudici presenti durante la trasmissione sono Lil Mama, JC Chasez e D-Trix, membro della Quest Crew vincitrice della terza stagione del programma. A partire dalla sesta stagione quest’ultimo ha sostituito Omarion, che a sua volta aveva preso il posto di Shane Sparks.

La prima stagione, trasmessa da MTV America nel 2008, è stata vinta dai Jabbawockeez; la seconda stagione dalla Super Cr3w. Nella quarta stagione, invece, a trionfare è stata la crew tutta femminile delle We are Heroes. A seguire si sono laureati campioni prima i Poreotix (quinta stagione), poi gli I aM mE nella sesta. Infine gli Elektrolytes nella settima.

L’idea del programma nasce dagli stessi organizzatori della competizione di fama mondiale “HIP HOP INTERNATIONAL” che vede le finali ogni anno a Las Vegas.

Con il supporto di MTV e del produttore Randy Jackson, si decise di creare un progetto che riportasse appunto l’idea della sfida tra crew presente nell’HHI in versione televisiva. Quindi riducendo al minimo la durata delle performances (circa 1 min) per esaltarne la spettacolarità, inserendo cosi in modo concentrato un maggior numero di effetti visivi e di acrobazie possibili, permettendo alle

Starting from the sixth season he replaced Omarion, who took the place of Shane Sparks.

The first season, broadcasted by MTV America in 2008, was won by the Jabbawockeez, the second season by Super Cr3w.

In the fourth season the all-female We Are Heroes crew won. Then Poreotix won the fifth season and I aM mE the sixth. Finally Elektrolytes won the seventh.

The show was founded by the organizers of the world-famous competition “HIP HOP INTERNATIONAL”.

With the support of MTV and the producer Randy Jackson, they decided to build up a project containing the same idea of the battle between crews in HHI on a TV base.

They minimized the length of the performances (about 1 min) to highlight the spectacular side, a great number of visual effects and acrobatics moves and allowing the crew to push at their max during the 60 available seconds.

Even the remix and the music are created specifically for the show, using top songs and US artists, who provide video shout outs to motivate the crew during the show.

Anche i remix e le musiche vengono create appositamente per il programma, utilizzando canzoni ed artisti più in voga negli USA, che durante il programma forniscono video di shout out o presenziano alle prove per motivare le crew.

La fine della serie, dopo la settima stagione nel 2012, è stata decretata da una mancanza di fondi dovuta al mancato rinnovamento del format dello show, che essendo stato usato così tante volte era diventato troppo prevedibile e ripetitivo per le persone che seguivano la serie regolarmente. In più il percorso fino alla proclamazione dei vincitori era divenuto troppo ovvio, quindi tutta la suspance nell’indovinare chi avrebbe vinto era ormai giunta ai minimi termini, perché tutti già immaginavano cosa sarebbe successo.

Nonostante molte crew abbiano iniziato anche a presenziare ad America’s Got Talent, gli ascolti di ABDC non ne hanno risentito; gli amanti del genere sono rimasti fedeli all’unico programma di qualità, come gli amanti del contemporaneo continuano a preferire So You Think You Can Dance. Questo perché molto spesso le crew vincitrici di ABDC e quelle con un buon seguito vengono invitate a partecipare ad AGT dalla produzione stessa, quindi si possono facilmente ritrovare anche lì le stesse crew o gli stessi componenti, rimescolati in nuove formazioni o come solisti.

Il problema dei 2 giudici su 3 non siano ballerini di hip hop è di facile soluzione: se mettessero in tv dei giudici di hip hop veri e propri, solo la stretta cerchia di esperti del settore guarderebbe il programma, visto che le persone hanno bisogno di riconoscere almeno una faccia famosa per guardare un programma. Quindi cantanti o persone dello spettacolo che hanno un seguito più vasto dei ballerini riescono ad attirare un pubblico maggiore.

Both crew and the live audience already know which crew will be eliminated and those who will proceed before the televoting is closed. So, for the entire period of the show, the crews are not allowed to leave the studio or the hotel and the news spread via facebook, twitter or other social networks is strictly prohibited.

Even the audience during registration need to sign a contract that not allow them to share any information regarding the show.

Poi viene fatto un montaggio con i pezzi migliori. Quindi sia le crew che il pubblico sanno già quale crew verrà eliminata e chi passerà il turno prima che il televoto sia chiuso. Dunque, per tutto il periodo del programma, le crew non hanno il permesso di lasciare gli studi televisivi o l’hotel e sono severamente vietate fughe di notizie via facebook, twitter etc.

Anche al pubblico presente durante la registrazione viene fatto firmare un contratto che obbliga a tacere qualsiasi informazione riguardante lo show.

Per quanto riguarda le finali, vengono registrate entrambe le crew come vincenti e viceversa perdenti. Viene poi mandata in onda solo la puntata con la crew che avrà ottenuto più voti da casa alla chiusura del televoto.

Per quanto riguarda la vita professionale diventa La vita professionale delle crew dopo ABDC varia molto a seconda dei feedback che ognuna di esse riceve durante il programma e dal numero di fans e followers che riesce a crearsi.

Ovviamente molto spesso sono le crew vincitrici che ne benificiano di più, ma non sempre è cosi. Sta poi alla crew fare una buona scelta nel management e nella continua promozione del proprio lavoro, per riuscire a continuare ad ottenere richieste ed opportunità, quindi a durare nel tempo. Si può perciò considerare ABDC come una buona vetrina per i ballerini, di sicuro un’esperienza professionale e di vita indimenticabile, per quanto dura ed intensa a livello fisico e mentale. Ovviamente il grosso del lavoro, per ogni gruppo che decide di continuare su questa linea, inizia dopo.

Una delle più grandi crew di successo del pianeta sono infatti i Jabbawockeez, che subito dopo aver vinto la prima edizione del programma si sono uniti alla SuperCr3w ed hanno investito tutto in uno show, chiamato “MUS.I.C.” in scena ogni sera da due anni a questa parte al Monte Carlo di Las Vegas. Uno spettacolo che ora, insieme al proprio brand, vale migliaia di dollari e ha sicuramente riservato loro un posto d’onore tra le leggende di questo genere.

One of the most succesful dance crew in the world are in fact the Jabbawockeez, who right after winning the first edition of the program incorporate the SuperCr3w and invested everything in a show called “MUS.I.C.” on stage every night since more than two years at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas.

A show that now, along with their brand, is worth thousands of dollars and has certainly given them an honored place among the dance legends.

Non c’è che dire, il Juste Debout 2013 non ha tradito le aspettative e dal lontano 2002 ne ha fatta di strada!

Continua infatti ad essere l’evento più ambito da tutti gli Stand Up dancers, soprattutto quelli di ultima generazione. Salire su quel cerchio, in mezzo a 18 mila persone, rappresenta per tanti il coronamento di un sogno. Così le emozioni che si vivono quando il proprio nome viene pronunciato e si entra nell’arena vanno a comporre un ricordo indelebile. Il JD 2013 si apre il sabato con le preselezioni francesi nella splendida cornice dell’Hotel De Ville, per completare il tabellone dei 16 finalisti che si contenderanno i vari titoli di specialità.

Il pubblico ed i partecipanti, rispetto alle edizioni precedenti, non sono molti ma del resto - dopo 14 selezioni mondiali e con solo 2 posti disponibili per categoria - non si può pretendere il contrario.

Tutto ok fino all’irruzione nell’Hotel De Ville di Slick Dog più discepoli e cameraman personale, vestiti con t-shirt G-STYLE ed intenti a farsi largo tra pubblico e ballerini, confusi tra risate e incredulità (scarica l’App per iPad per vedere il video).

Alla fine il tutto non è altro che una provocazione G Style nei confronti degli Electric Boogaloos e di tutti quelli che preferiscono gli EB Style. Inevitabile lo scontro con i francesi: da una parte Los Kassos (Franqey e Nelson) & co., dall’altra i G Style con Slick Dog, che incita ed urla nei confronti dei francesi. Il risultato è un cerchio sempre più pericoloso e caotico. Si tratta di un ulteriore episodio nella triste e ridicola guerra che sta dividendo da tempo il mondo del poppin’, fra G ed EB style, che porterà le sue parti a confrontarsi - senza utilità e senso - su quale sia lo stile migliore.

Ma, soprattutto, inasprendo i rapporti all’interno della scena.

Tornando al JD, lo spettacolo della domenica si apre con uno splendido gioco di immagini proiettate sul tendone bianco che copre il palco e con altrettante meravigliose esibizioni di ballerini e musicisti. Da sottolineare quella - stratosferica - di Bboy Pocket. La chiusura è riservata alla

Juste Debout 2013 didn’t betray our expectations; since 2002 it has come a long way.

It’s the most coveted event for Stand Up Dancers, especially for the last generation; getting in that ring, in the middle of a crowd of 18000 people, it’s something like a crowning materialization of a dream.

Hearing your name announced and then getting on to the arena it’s something indelibly printing among your memories.

JD 2013 started on Saturday with French pre-selections inside the wonderful Hotel De Ville, to complete the board of the 16 finalists competing for the different style titles. The audience and the challengers number decreased from past editions.

After 14 selections all around the World and only two places for each category it’s a predictable thing. Everything was fine ‘til the Slick Dog rush inside the Hotel, with his disciples and personal cameraman, all dressed with G-Style t-shirts, trying to get among the audience and dancers, confused between laugh and incredulity (download Ipad App to watch it).

It was just a provocation from G-Style toward Electric Boogalos and their followers. The face-off between the French people has been inevitable: on one side Los Kassos (Frangey and Nelson) & co., G Style on the other side with Slick Dog inciting and shouting against the French guys. The result is a chaotic and dangerous cypher. It’s another episode of a sad and ridiculous feud which is dividing the poppin’ world between G and EB style.

It’s gonna bring the different sides to a nonsense competition for which one is the best style and it’s gonna exacerbate the scene relationships as well.

Returning to JD, the Sunday show opened with wonderful pictures, casted on the white tarpaulin covering the stage, followed by amazing performances of dancers and artists. I want to mention the extraordinary one of Bboy Pocket. It all finished with the show of a ballet dancer from Montalvo Company, dancing on a hip hop beat. The mutual respect and consideration between

Dopo lo showcase del rapper francese Kery James e la sfilata delle nazioni si aprono i battle, alcuni entusiasmanti, alcuni no. Prima delle finali arriva il bellissimo e potente show degli Wanted.

Ecco i vincitori del JD 2013: Hip Hop - Fabrice & Ice (FRA) House - Adnan & Ukay (GER) Poppin’ - Greenteck & Popping Ness (CAN/ USA) Lockin’ - Plock & Jimmy Soul (FRA) Experimental - Gil Arazzi Gomes Leal (OLA) Top rock - Bairock (USA) Non posso che fare i miei più sentiti complimenti a Bruce perché, per quanto si vogliano trovare lacune, organizzare un contest di questa portata è cosa non semplice e - che vi piaccia o no - lui è riuscito a creare l’evento più importante al mondo insieme al BOTY International. Perciò, cari miei, chapeau a Monsieur Bruce Ykanji.

Senza mancare di rispetto all’evento, non si può però essere soddisfatti del lavoro della giuria, alquanto superficiale e con dubbi verdetti: una sfida è stata ripetuta per un sospetto errore di votazione. Viene da chiedersi: se gli interessati non fossero stati Kapela e Serge, Mamson avrebbe ritrattato sul voto?

Si deve, ahimè, sottolineare dunque la tendenza dei giurati a favorire la propria nazione, anche in modo plateale: Wong nei confronti degli Originality (la sua crew), Bruce nei confronti dei belgi. Infine Hit Masterfish nei confronti degli americani, a cui non ha mai votato contro, tanto da sollevare in qualche sfida i 18 mila in un boato di fischi.

Voto alla giuria del JD 2013: 4.

Un’altra critica riguarda la sfilata delle nazioni partecipanti: veder portare la bandiera nazionale da chi non fa parte di quel paese ritengo sia di cattivo gusto.

Basta dire che sono i vincenti della selezione in quel paese. Due russe che ballano per l’Italia non si possono accettare.

After the showcase of the French rapper Kery James and the Nations parade, the battles finally began, some of them exciting, some others not. Before the finals the powerful and beautiful show of Wanted Posse was enjoyable too.

You can like it or not, but he managed to create one of the most important worldwide events in addition to BOTY International, so ‘Chapeau’ to Monsieur Bruce Ykanji.

Another criticism is about the Nation parade: to see the flag of your country represented by foreigners is not a proper thing.My praise goes to the Italian challengers Shorty and Sasà for Poppin’ and Bboy Smile for Top Rock. I gladly congratulate with them: two semi-finals already made history, they lost to such famous names in the international scene.

Il mio elogio va infine agli italiani presenti alla competizione: Shorty e Sasà nel Poppin’, Smile nel Top rock. Sentitissimi complimenti per i risultati: due semifinali che fanno sicuramente storia, in cui i nostri sono stati battuti da nomi illustri del panorama internazionale. Sono veramente fiero di questi tre ragazzi made in Italy, che hanno difeso e portato in alto la nostra bandiera.

Ora, ovviamente, tutti salgono sul carro dei vincitori, anche se spero che questa cosa succeda nella buona ma anche nella cattiva sorte, perché il sostegno non lo si dà solo in occasione dei successi.

Quando vedo scritte cose come “ora l’Italia c’è”, sorrido e puntualizzo: l’Italia c’è, c’è sempre stata e ci sarà sempre.

Un esempio: sono anni che Smile rappresenta l’Italia e si sbatte sul floor ovunque. Come lui, tanti altri. L’elenco che potrei fare dagli anni ottanta ad oggi è lungo, perciò ribadisco con fierezza che l’Italia c’è, c’è sempre stata e ci sarà sempre. Il problema, forse, è che qualcuno la vede solo ora.

I’m proud of these 3 made in Italy guys who defended and held high our flag. Now, obviously a lot of people is going to jump on the band wagon. I hope this is going to happen in good and bad times, because winners are not the only ones needing support. I saw a hilarious facebook status: “Now Italy stands up there…”.

I want to make it clear. Italy stands up there, it always stood and always will.

Here’s an example: Bboy Smile is representing Italy and working hard on the floor for so many years now and so many others too. Since the 80’s, a list of this people is very long, so I want to say it again: ITALY STANDS UP THERE, IT ALWAYS STOOD AND ALWAYS WILL. Maybe someone is realizing it just now.

Il mio amore per la street culture, la musica, il ballo ed i miei legami con persone grandiose in giro per il mondo mi hanno permesso di costruire questa carriera. Per molto tempo l’house dance non risultava essere uno stile ricercato nel mondo, a differenza degli altri tipi di ballo.

Ora, grazie alle molte competizioni ed eventi di danza che includono l’house come categoria, è finalmente riconosciuta come parte rilevante della comunità e mi ha permesso di essere così fortunato da viaggiare per il globo condividendo la mia conoscenza ed esperienza.

Molte persone durante i miei viaggi mi chiedono se secondo me i battle continueranno. Le competizioni sono un ottimo luogo per permettere alla gente di mostrare ciò per cui si è allenata. Sono dei gran bei luoghi dove andare e buttare fuori lo stress. Inoltre, proprio per l’atmosfera dei battle, molti ballerini sono venuti a conoscenza dei differenti stili. Immaginate un ballerino che ha fatto battle per 10 anni. Con quanti stili pensate che questo ballerino si sia confrontato?

Comunque la cosa migliore delle competizioni, per me, è che permettono a quella che è una comunità ristretta di costruire un ponte comunicativo con gente da tutto il mondo. I giovani d’oggi sono in grado di usare il mondo a proprio vantaggio e di creare una reale comunità globale, unendosi attraverso il ballo.

Questo è ciò di cui abbiamo veramente bisogno, affinché questa cultura continui a crescere abbiamo bisogno di lavorare assieme più spesso. Ciascuno di noi deve fare la sua parte.

La cosa più importante è quello che stiamo facendo. Ballare nell’1-3! Mostrare rispetto per l’arte. Diffondere amore, è lo stile di Brooklyn.

My love for street culture, music, dance and my relationships with great people around the world has allowed me to be build this career. House dance is something that was not sought after around the world like other forms of dance for a long time. Now, thanks to the many dance competitions and events that include house as a category, it is finally recognized as a relevant form in the community and it has allowed me to be lucky enough to travel the globe sharing my knowledge and experience.

A lot of people during my travels ask me if I think the battles will continue. Competitions are a great place for people to display what they have been practicing. They are a great place to go and release stress. Also, because of the battle atmosphere, a lot of dancers are becoming familiar with many styles. Imagine a dancer who has been battling for 10 years. How many styles do you think this dancer has been exposed to?

The best thing about the competitions to me, however, is the fact that they are allowing a small street style dance community to build bridges with people from around the world.

The youth of today are able to take advantage of the world, and make this a real global community joined together through dance.

This is really what we need. In order for this culture to continue to grow, we need to work together more often. We all must play our part.

The most important thing is what we are doing.

Making moves in the 1-3! Show respect for the art. Spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way.

Se tutte le cose cambiano o si evolvono, lo stesso fa il mondo dello street-wear.

Ecco quindi il momento delle news riguardanti uno dei brand - nonché l’accessorio - che un po’ tutti abbiamo dimostrato di amare maggiormente in questi anni: New Era Cap. Se un tempo non troppo lontano era un capo di nicchia, ormai il cappello firmato New Era è richiesto da una molteplicità di persone, senza più differenze di tendenze, lifestyle, gusti musicali o modi di essere e vestire.

Quest’esplosione è sicuramente la conseguenza di una grande campagna di marketing da parte del brand stesso, oltre che di un utilizzo eterogeneo e continuo da parte di vip ed artisti.

New Era ha perciò potuto sbizzarrirsi nel creare cappelli dei colori e modelli più disparati, dando pane per i denti a tutti. Fermo restando i più noti e forse utilizzati modelli MLB Basic 59/50 di squadre MLB, in questo ultimo triennio hanno visto la luce altri modelli unici nel loro genere, come Umpire (con visiera più corta, molto ricercato) o quelli legati ai supereroi Marvel e DC Comics, piuttosto che a Mickey Mouse o M. Alì (sempre capi bestseller).

Il brand ha però avuto grande lungimiranza quando (cosa già fatta, certo, ma ora in forma molto più massiccia) ha proposto sul mercato quello di cui forse c’era più desiderio e bisogno: i modelli SnapBack 9/50.

Essi infatti, oltre ad essere di più semplice utilizzo (non hanno misura, se non S/M ed M/L, dipendenti dalla profondità del corpo del cappello, essendo la larghezza regolabile dal retro), hanno portato una ventata di freschezza e novità che ha mantenuto voglia e curiosità di provare il marchio sulla propria testa.

Risultato: boom di richieste.

So it’s time for some updates regarding one of the brand – as well as the accessory – everybody loved most in these years: New Era Cap.
