Welcome from the College Principal

Our vision is to transform the College of Crete into a leading private provider of higher education within the Mediterranean region. Our mission is to pursue our vision through the expansion of College of Crete’s portfolio of programmes by adding new undergraduate and postgraduate courses, while enhancing the College’s teaching and learning approaches aiming for the highest quality and standards. The source of our competitive advantage is our selective differentiation strategy which aims to put the College of Crete at the top of private colleges in the wider southern Mediterranean region. Emanating from our carefully planned and implemented differentiation strategy, we have managed to attain the following distinctive characteristics: • We are the only accredited private Higher Education provider in the area of Southern Greece. • We are the only provider of higher education programmes in Southern Greece who provides its students with access to degrees from top-ranked universities, and enables them to acquire unique competitive advantage in the globalised employment market. • Our Teaching and Learning (T&L) strategy and methods reflect the guidelines that Staffordshire University and Nottingham Trent University have, though, carefully contextualised to fit the needs and the special characteristics of the local or the individual student cultures. • We prepare our graduates to enter the employment market or continue for postgraduate courses in top universities. • We are continuously investing in new technology and innovative methods and tools to support teaching and learning. The College of Crete is one of the very few higher education institutions in Greece using Turnitin (plagiarism detection software) and Moodle (electronic resources platform). E-library, fast broadband internet, full wi-fi facilities, continuous access to the library, studio space, computer rooms, technical equipment, and labs are only some of the facilities available. • Our academic team includes individuals with strong academic background and relevant professional experience. Thus, our students have the unique ability to learn both theory and practice. • We are one of the few private colleges in Greece with research activities and participation in international scientific conferences. • Last but not least, we are an institution which is flexible and adaptive to the needs of its students. There is a high degree of responsiveness, empathy, and openness in meeting students’ expectations. We are looking forward to seeing you in one of our programmes.

The University of London International Programmes is the world’s oldest provider of degrees through distance and flexible learning. LSE is one of the Colleges of the University of London and a world-leading social science institution. Academics from LSE provide the academic direction for the specific programmes. Accreditations and Memberships EDU On August 2nd 2011 the College of Crete MBS was accredited by EDU – the intergovernmental organization (IGO) formed in June 2011 under the guidelines and protocols of UN. EDU was created aiming to provide international accreditation for higher learning institutions. Its aim is within the next 5 years to create a publicly accessible database of tertiary education/academic institutions. The problem of illegal, fraud, and degree-mill institutions which often appear as “universities” is becoming more intense following the continuous increase in the demand for higher education qualifications. This problem is twofold: 1) Increasingly students worldwide are misled by these institutions. This has financial implications for them but most importantly it creates emotional distress and holds back their plans for career progression. 2) The higher education sector in general is negatively affected by the operation of these organizations. The entire sector is influenced by negative criticism and word-of-mouth which is generated by deluded students and their families. EDU is planning to create a database of the legal institutions in tertiary education at international level. According to EDU Secretary-General, His Excellency G.Irving Levance, “Our ultimate goal is to curb the questionable activities of fake schools and bogus accreditation agencies currently plaguing the global educational market, particularly online”. The College of Crete MBS was one of the first education organisations to receive accreditation by EDU. Dr Vangelis Tsiligiris, the College’s Principal, mentioned “we are honoured by the accreditation of EDU. We strongly believe that this initiative will be a great success and it’s going to be embraced by Higher Education Institutions worldwide. It is definitely something which was needed to reassure students and their families are not misled, while legal Higher Education Institutions safeguard their reputation”. You can find more about the accreditation of MBS by EDU in www.edu.int/MBS British Accreditation Council (BAC) The College of Crete MBS was inspected and successfully certified by BAC as a suitable institution for offering higher education services. It received excellent reviews (report of inspectors BAC, 22/01/2005& 18/02/2010) on the quality of the studies, the facilities, the administration and the functionality of the College as a whole. More specifically, the report concluded “…The College of Crete MBS remains an impressive educational institution which achieves high levels of quality in all its functional areas…’’ 16

In order for an institution to receive the accreditation from BAC, it has to fulfill specific requirements concerning its facilities, academic and administrative staff, the quality of its programmes and organisational entity as a whole. Once the accreditation is given, intermediate checks occur in order to ensure the maintenance of a high level of quality. The accreditation from BAC, is considered proof of quality and efficiency in the Educational Sector and is recognised globally as such.

National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) The College of Crete MBS is associated with the official source of recognition body UK NARIC. The National Recognition Information Centre for UK (NARIC) is responsible for providing the necessary information and advice concerning both professional and academic qualifications, not only in Britain but also in other countries. After the degree qualifications have been certified by NARIC, a certificate is awarded to each graduate respectively. This official document confirms that the degree conferred by the College of Crete MBS, is equivalent, to that awarded to the graduates of Staffordshire University and Nottingham Trent University in the UK in every aspect.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) was founded in 1911 and as its patron it has Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It is world’s largest organisation of professional marketers. It is based in UK with over 40,000 members worldwide. Its headquarters are in Cookham near Maidenhead. CIM offers professional development to marketing practitioners across the world. Its objective is to raise the status of marketing onto a more professional and strategic level around the world. The College of Crete MBS has been accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing to provide tuition, through various delivery methods. Joining CIM and attaining such a qualification gives students professional credibility - and a major advantage over their competitors in the job market. Plus, having the weight of the world’s largest professional recognised marketing organisation behind them also provides many other benefits. Students also have access to a variety of valuable support for their professional life, such as business intelligence, careers advice, industry news and views. In all, they will be armed with the knowledge and business intelligence to keep improving and sharpening their skills as a marketer, no matter where in their career they may be.

The Hellenic Colleges’ Association (HCA) The College of Crete MBS is a member of the Hellenic Colleges Association (HCA). HCA was established during 1998. Today, it has 14 members which cooperate with foreign universities and offer Higher Education courses in Greece leading to Diplomas or University Degrees awarded by foreign Universities. The Island of Crete Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than 8,000 square kilometers. Crete is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. This exotic scenery is the finest in the world and has established Crete as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. In addition, the island’s historic importance in today’s world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is evidenced by the tens of thousands of visitors to these sites each year. Crete has a rich mythology mostly connected with the ancient Greek Gods. The Idaion cave at Mount Ida was the birthplace of the god Zeus. The Paximadia islands were the birthplace of the goddess Artemis and the god Apollo. There are many other jewels just waiting to be discovered. This “paradise island” falls in the North African climatic zone, and thus enjoys significantly more sunny days and high temperatures throughout the year. Modern Crete offers everything that a student needs: adventure, relaxation, clubbing, sports facilities, sunny beaches and mountains blanketed with snow, small shops and big malls. The combination of expanding of the green energy industry expansion and the natural gas findings at the south of the island, makes Crete one of the best regions for business growth in the years to come.

Heraklion City Heraklion is the 5th in size city of Greece. Near the city’s area there are settlements from the Neolithic Period. Even though there are just a few findings to prove it, it is believed that the city was the port of the ancient city of Knossos. The city of Heraklion still enjoys its reputation as one of the most attractive Mediterranean capitals. Heraklion has enough to offer the cultural tastes and shopping needs of both visitors and residents to ensure that all parties are fully catered for. It is no accident that it has always been the business and social center of Crete throughout the ages and that status is maintained today.

Heraklion plays host to many interests and activities as well as providing a very pleasant way of life. Heraklion is a city with one foot rooted in the past, the other stepping into the future. Currently the population of Heraklion is approximately 200,000 people. It is a very dynamic and cosmopolitan town particularly during the summer period when thousands of visitors can be seen shopping in the market or visiting the museums and other places of interest. Heraklion is also the top choice for tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. The unique natural beauty favours the development of alternative forms of tourism and provides a combination of mountain and sea sports. For those inclined to modern entertainment, the city offers ample opportunities for everything you wish for. Heraklion is also the commercial and scientific centre of the island. It has a strategic geopolitical position in the southeast basin of the Mediterranean Sea connecting three continents and many different cultures. During the last 20 years the city has made remarkable progress in the academic and technological fields.

The dynamic and imaginative combination of natural beauty, climate, strategic position, cultural heritage and scientific background has created an appropriate environment to add value to the broader entrepreneurial activity in the region and has stimulated the local economy.

Night life

The Cretan airport is named after the world famous author Nikos Kazantzakis and is very busy, being the link between Crete and everywhere else in Greece and Europe. In addition, Heraklion port is the link to Piraeus, Thessaloniki and the Aegean islands.

Crete has one of the most vibrant night scenes of all the Greek islands. There’s a huge amount and diversity of nightlife, ranging from brash Brit bars and frantic foam parties to more traditional evenings of Cretan music and dancing.

Shopping The central market and the shops in Heraklion are among the most diverse in Crete. Visitors can easily find souvenirs, jewellery, furs, food, and clothes for any price. Especially for clothes and shoes there is a vast variety of shops that sell both expensive big brands and quality cheap products. Famous Cretan products such as oil, wine, raki (spirit), honey and herbs are really worth tasting and buying.

Hersonissos and Malia, east along the coast from Heraklion, are the two main hot spots for party animals. Both resorts are awash with bars and discos catering for young, foreign visitors round-the-clock. Heraklion has a lively nightlife with numerous music bars and dance clubs where you can take your pick of international chart music, Greek pop or traditional Cretan entertainment.
