Message from Mayor Cathy Olesen Winter is a busy time in Strathcona County with several exciting community events for you and your family to take in. This year we are very pleased to be a route community for the 2010 Winter Olympic Torch Relay. The Torch will come through our community on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. Watch for more details in the coming months. Our New Year’s Eve Festival is always a great time for the whole family. With many indoor and outdoor activities to choose from you are sure to find something that everyone will enjoy. So please join us at Broadmoor Lake Park and celebrate the kick-off to 2010 on Thursday, December 31. On another note, if you’re looking for an outdoor activity to try then head out to the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. Here you can try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and much more. When those really cold days set in this winter, bring your family to one of our recreation centres to enjoy some indoor fun. As you can see, our community is full of activities to choose from year-round, so be adventurous this winter and take part in an activity that interests you. In the spirit of active living,

Dogs in Parks

Warning - Thin Ice!

Where can I take my dog on a leash?

Winter means colder temperatures and the start of ice forming on ponds and streams. People of all ages are tempted to venture out onto the new ice. All ice at this time of year is dangerous! Early snows make things worse by insulating the thin layer of ice and not allowing it to freeze. Freeze/thaw cycles also weaken the ice. Thin ice signs are posted on the storm water ponds in Sherwood Park when conditions are unsafe. Show your children what the signs look like. When the signs are up, remind your family to be safe and stay OFF the ice.

Dogs are allowed in most parks, however, requirements of the Dog Control Bylaw must be met: • Dogs must wear a valid Strathcona County licence tag. • Dogs must be on a leash no longer than eight metres. Dogs defined in the Dog Control Bylaw as Restricted or Vicious are subject to greater restrictions. • The person holding the leash must be able to control the dog. • Scoop it...it's the law! The owner must pick up the dog's defecation. Don't forget to take a plastic bag along when you go out for a walk. Visit our website at www.strathcona.ab.ca/recreation or call Strathcona Bylaw Services at 780-449-0170 for more information.

Are there places my dog can't go? Dogs are not permitted in the following areas: • playgrounds (meaning the sand or grass • tennis courts base beneath playground equipment) • spray decks • the Strathcona Wilderness Centre • floral gardens

Is there an off-leash area?

STAY SAFE Keep Off

Remember to stay within public skating areas. Other parts of the ice may be unsafe. The best rule to follow at this time of year is to keep off all ice surfaces.

DANGER Thin Ice

You can exercise your dog off leash at the Regional Off-leash Site Drive 3 km south of Wye Road on Highway 21, turn west onto Township Road 522 and watch for off-leash area signs. The parking lot is on the south side of the road. Dogs in the off-leash area must be under control at all times - have your leash ready in case you need it. Your dog must be able to “come”, “sit” and “stay” on verbal command. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

What’s happening with the site development at the off-Leash park?

Thank You! To our Volunteers in Parks! A big thanks to all of the members of our community who assist with the care and beautification of our parks and the provision of spontaneous outdoor recreation opportunities.

The clean-up and removal of the dirt in the pond on west side of the park has been completed. All that remains to complete this stage of the project is to reseed the grass in the area. This will be done in spring 2010. The fenced area will be open to Off-Leash users this fall once the ground freezes and mud isn’t an issue. The gates will close again in the spring to reseed the grass and allow the grass to grow.

Become a V.I.P.! Our list of registered Volunteers In Parks is growing. It includes individuals, community organizations and schools who participate in a variety of programs and activities. Strathcona in Bloom,Adopt-A-Park, Trail Watch, Dogs in Parks and Spray Deck Operations are all programs made possible by countless hours of volunteer involvement.

The second stage of the park revitalization will start in the spring. 2010 will see the enhancement of some of the trails in the area from the current dirt trails, to mulch and gravel trails. Watch for more information in the spring.

Sherwood Park Natural Area

Dogs Unleashed Association Dogs Unleashed Association is a non-profit organization that has been formed for dog enthusiasts who enjoy allowing their dogs the opportunity to run and exercise in a safe and organized off leash area. Dogs Unleashed is working with Strathcona County to: • Promote and help maintain off leash areas in Strathcona County. • Recommend future sites for off leash use. • Educate both dog owners and the general public about off leash sites, rules and etiquette. • Partner with various “dog” related services to help meet dog owners’ needs.

Enjoy a walk at the Sherwood Park Natural Area! Volunteer stewards look after this aspen parkland. You are invited to walk through the site and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature on the trails. Please respect all area users... horses are not permitted on the natural area trails, with the exception of the Old Edmonton Trail. Dog owners must ensure that their dog is on a leash at all times and remember to pick up after their pet. It’s located on Range Road 231, between Twp. Rds 520 and 522. Call Reg Gray at 780-467-8321 if you would like to become a Natural Area Steward. Thank you to Colchester & District Agricultural Society, The Strathcona Naturalists, Petro-Canada and Enbridge Pipelines Inc. for funding assistance.

Why not get involved? Your dog will thank you. Call 780-416-6729

Program Notes

Preschool

Welcome to Preschool...each day your child will need A light snack (no peanut butter or nuts of any kind). Comfortable play clothes and clean rubber-soled shoes for minigym sessions (for health reasons bare feet are not permitted). "Craft friendly" clothes.

Please ensure all snacks & lunches are nut-free.

The benefits of a preschool program

Early childhood experiences such as playing, singing and creating serve as a strong foundation for a child’s future. Preschool programs offer young children the opportunity to develop social and learning skills that help encourage self-esteem, independence, self-awareness and acceptance. Through play, children in our programs are introduced to learning concepts such as colours, shapes, numbers and letters. Social interaction is encouraged through a variety of circle-time activities, while art experiences provide the opportunity for a child to fully express his/ her creativity.

Parent participation We offer both parented and un-parented preschool programs. If this is the first time your child has been in a program or your little one isn’t ready to be left, our parented programs are a great way for your child to become comfortable with an instructor and familiar with working in a group. For those parents who are looking at a transition program to ease their children into independence we recommend our Ready, Set, Go program. The first hour is parented and the last hour parents meet in a separate room for an informative parenting session. Once your children are ready to venture out on their own we have a variety of unparented programs to choose from. We strive to provide programming for the varying needs of parents and children. While parents are always welcome to visit the classroom we ask that you understand the purpose of the programs and respect the difference between parented and un-parented classes. To allow parents to fully participate, we request that childcare arrangements be made for younger siblings.

Health Note: Does your child require an Epi-pen? For your child’s safety, please fill out the medical forms prior to the first class and indicate this on the registration form. Medical forms are available at the Recreation Administration Office (2025 Oak Street in Sherwood Park). Please note that your child must bring an Epi-pen to stay on the 1st day of programs. * A recent photo is required to complete the form. All preschool toys and equipment are cleaned and disinfected accordingly: • small toys & centre activities (1x per week) • all large gym equipment (1x per session)

Preschool notables • Age appropriate activities are key to enhancing self-esteem and learning. As such, it is important that children turn the required age prior to program start date. • All preschool classes begin and end promptly at the times indicated for each program (a late pick-up procedure is used which requires a signature). • Preschool programs are not equipped to change diapers. It is recommended that your child be fully toilet trained before being registered in an un-parented program. Parents will be contacted by telephone to attend to diapering needs. • Preschool programs are for those children registered in the program only, so please make arrangements for your other children. • Parents will be asked to complete participant forms on day one. Please schedule your time accordingly. • Preschool classes operate regardless of weather. • Clearly label all your child’s belongings. • To help you find the right class for your child, take a look at the chart on page 33. Swimmers actively learn how to be safe around the water, increase fitness and improve endurance through fun activities. Children are challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which is a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

Register early for evening swimming programs Swimming programs during evening times tend to fill up first. If your child is able to attend a swim program during the daytime we recommend you try those times first. If not remember to register early as spots are limited.

Is there a value in putting my name on the waitlist? Spots in a swim program may become available after the program is full. When this happens, those that have been placed on the waitlist will be contacted. Waitlists also help programmers plan the most efficient use of space for future sessions.

Coordinating swim programs Lower level swim programs are in high demand. Please review all swimming options possible to coordinate all your children's programs. Please be flexible.
