Introduction

Message from Mayor Linda Osinchuk Spring is a wonderful time of year. It’s a time when we are all excited to get outside and be active after a long, cold winter. Our community offers excellent opportunities for all our residents to be active outdoors. Did you know over 100 km of parkway trail winds its way through Sherwood Park? So dust off your bikes and helmets and take a ride! If you’re looking for more of an outdoor adventure, why not head out to the Strathcona Wilderness Centre for a hike with your family? It’s only a 20 minute drive outside of Sherwood Park and it makes for a great weekend adventure. As you read through this Spring edition of the Recreation Guide, I am confident that you will find programs that entice you and your family. Whether you are looking for something that will boost your fitness level, or want to find a program that will satisfy your creative side – you will find it here! Strathcona County has so much to offer and this guide highlights some of our great programs! On behalf of County Council, we wish you a healthy 2012. As I travel around the County, I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in the community. Please enjoy and use our fantastic facilities! In the spirit of active living,

Linda Osinchuk, MAYOR STRATHCONA COUNTY

Outdoors Parks

Dogs in Parks Where can I take my dog on a leash? Dogs are allowed in most parks, however, requirements of the Dog Control Bylaw must be met: • Dogs must wear a valid Strathcona County licence tag. • Dogs must be on a leash no longer than eight metres. Dogs defined in the Dog Control Bylaw as Restricted or Vicious are subject to greater restrictions. • The person holding the leash must be able to control the dog. • Scoop it...it's the law! The owner must pick up the dog's defecation. Don't forget to take a plastic bag along when you go out for a walk. Visit www.strathcona.ca/recreation or call Strathcona County Bylaw Services at 780-449-0170 for more information.

Are there places my dog can't go? Dogs are not permitted in the following areas: • playgrounds (meaning the sand or grass • tennis courts base beneath playground equipment) • spray decks • the Strathcona Wilderness Centre • floral gardens

Is there an off-leash area? You can exercise your dog off leash at the Regional Off-leash Site Drive 3 km south of Wye Road on Highway 21, turn west onto Township Road 522 and watch for off-leash area signs. The parking lot is on the south side of the road. Dogs in the off-leash area must be under control at all times - have your leash ready in case you need it.Your dog must be able to “come”,“sit” and “stay” on verbal command. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

What’s happening with the site development at the off-Leash park? The current park site revitalization has been completed. The full development has included the clean-up and removal of the dirt in the pond on the west side of the park, addition of a gravel trail, addition of mulch to internal trails, interpretive signage and park furnishings. The revitalized site is now fully open for you and your dog to enjoy.

Dogs Unleashed Association Calling all dogs and their owners... How can you tell if spring ice is safe?

Adopt-a-park

You can't!

Do you have a park or green space near your home that you are interested in improving or helping to maintain? Would you like to beautify your community, meet your neighbours and enjoy the outdoors! Volunteer for Adopt-A-Park and help keep the parks in your neighbourhood looking great!

The way ice forms in the fall and winter affects the way it melts in spring. Ice may look thick enough to support your weight, but it may not be. Weight that was easily supported in the middle of winter crashes through the ice in the spring. The only way to protect yourself and your family is to stay off the ice.

Our Adopt-A-Park staff will listen to your ideas, will keep you informed of the work planned for the park in your neighbourhood, and will talk with you about how you can help. Remember that you must work with the municipality and need to have approval before you can plant, add to or change any public property. If you are interested in volunteering, please call 780-416-6729.

STAY SAFE Keep Off

The storm water ponds in Sherwood Park are part of our storm water management system. Please remember they were built for storm water management and stay off the ice at this time of year.

Swimming

Lesson Descriptions

Red Cross Swim Kids Programs 6Y+ This 10-level program for school aged children helps swimmers develop all five swimming strokes (front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke). Swimmers actively learn how to be safe around the water, increase fitness and improve endurance through fun activities. Children are challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which is a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

Level 1

Level 7

• orientation to water and pool area, introduce floats & glides with kicks. • build endurance by improving distance.

• continue to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke; introduce whip kick on the front. • learn about airway/breathing obstructions; increase endurance through timed water-treading and a 150m swim.

Level 2 • build skills for front/back swims in deep water; build endurance in flutter kicking with assisted glides. • learn proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Level 3 • learn front crawl, diving and making wise choices surrounding swims. • work on floats, changing direction; build strength in flutter kick and 15m swim.

Level 4 • develop front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl. • work on kneeling dives, surface support; build strength in 25m swim; develop sense of self-safety and personal limits.

Level 5 • develop back crawl, sculling skills, stride-dives, safe boating skills & whip kick on back • develop endurance through dolphin kick and 50m swim.

Level 6 • refine front and back crawl; introduce elementary backstroke; build endurance through a 75m swim. • introduce safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and front dives.

Level 8 • introduce breaststroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. • learn the dangers of open water, hypothermia; perform rescue breathing on children and adults; build endurance through dolphin kick and 300m swim.

Level 9/10 In level 9 • refine front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke; combine different strokes and kicks for fitness; build endurance through 400m swim. • work on head-first shallow dives & standing dives; learn about wise choices, peer influences, and self-rescue from ice.

In level 10 • increased stroke & endurance development • learn about sun safety, rescuing others from the ice, & head-first, feet first shallow dives • build endurance using dolphin kick and 500m swim.

Recognized partners with Swimming Canada, Red Cross Swim programs are an excellent way to pursue the sport of swimming by developing survival and competitive swimming skills in all students.
