Message from Mayor Roxanne Carr In Strathcona County we are working hard to continually improve our recreation spaces to meet the changing needs of our growing community through our Open Spaces and Recreation Facilities Strategy. I am pleased to announce that the first phase of construction is now underway for the Glen Allan Recreation Complex wellness center revitalization project. This revitalization will breathe new life into a recreational landmark in our community. For further information about more exciting projects on their way, please visit www.strathcona.ca/revitalize. As one of Canada’s top communities to live and raise a family, we are proud to present a wide variety of events and activities throughout the summer months. This year we will be hosting the 2014 Canada 55+ Games from August 27 to 30. In support of the Games, the gallery@501 will be featuring a unique and inspiring exhibit from July 7 to August 31 entitled, Art Object D’Sport. This exhibit will combine pieces from past Olympics, the Canadian and the Alberta Sport Hall of Fame, as well as Canada 55+ Games inspired artwork. This summer, be sure to enjoy all that Strathcona County has to offer from exciting events and gallery exhibits to quiet walking trails and wildlife watching.

Summer Camp Notes

SUMMER CAMPS Camp notes • For your child's best experience we suggest they are fully toilet trained. Parents will be contacted by telephone to attend to any changing needs. • Parents/guardians are required to sign children in and out each day. • Parents/guardians will be asked to complete information forms for all programs. Please ensure you allow yourself enough time to complete these the first morning of camps. • Due to the increasing severity of nut allergies, we request that lunches & snacks do not include peanut butter or nuts of any kind. • All classes begin and end promptly at the times indicated for each program (a late pick-up procedure is used). Program times include pre- and post-care where indicated. • Craft and art sessions can get messy. Please dress your child in craft friendly clothes. • All lunch hours are supervised. • Clearly label all of your child’s belongings. • All electronic games and devices should be left at home.

Does your child require an Epi-pen or have special medical needs? For your child’s safety, please fill out the medical forms prior to the first class and indicate their medical needs on the registration form. Severe Allergy and Participant information forms are available online at www.strathcona.ca/registration. Please return completed forms prior to the first day of camps at the Recreation Administration Office located at 2025 Oak Street in Sherwood Park. Note: Youth day camp waivers can also be found online at www.strathcona.ca in the Forms Cabinet under Registration Information Forms. Filling out these forms will help create a positive experience for your child, and enable instructors and staff to provide the best services possible. Advance notice allows instructors to plan appropriately so we can offer inclusive and accessible programs.Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Please note: If your child requires an Epi-pen, please ensure they carry one for the duration of the camp.

WHAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS EACH DAY Every camp... Send a nut free light snack and a water bottle for your child each day. Full day programs require two separate nut free snacks and a lunch for your child. Bring clean rubber-soled shoes for indoor sessions (for health and safety reasons, bare feet, flip flops and sandals are not permitted). We request that your child wear protective clothing and that sunscreen and/or insect repellent be applied to your child prior to class. Programs operate regardless of weather. Instructors will inform parents of outdoor activities. Please dress your child accordingly for outdoor activities.

For special camps... Your child will need a bicycle or tricycle each day. Helmets are mandatory. Camps may include a swim component, so please send your child with a bathing suit & towel on the specified day. Bring clean indoor dance shoes for indoor sessions (for health and safety reasons, bare feet, flip flops and sandals are not permitted). Please send your child with a helmet. (please send your child with these items when they appear beside program)

Parents will need to complete all applicable forms. See above for details.

Aquatic Registration Online Survey We will be implementing additional registration cycles for aquatics beginning Fall 2014. This will help alleviate some of the pressure and help to prevent the need for parents to double register their children in more than one level at a time. As we plan for this change, we would like to learn more from you about your registration experience so we can continue to make adjustments that ensure we provide a quality registration and swim experience. Please take a few minutes to complete the online survey at

Red Cross Swim Kids Programs This 10-level program for school aged children helps swimmers develop all five swimming strokes (front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke). Swimmers actively learn how to be safe around the water, increase fitness and improve endurance through fun activities. Children are challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which is a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

Recognized partners with Swimming Canada, Red Cross Swim programs are an excellent way to pursue the sport of swimming by developing survival and competitive swimming skills in all students.

Program Dates Session 1 Jul 2 - Jul 11 7 classes / week 1: Wed - Fri week 2: Tue - Fri Session 2 Jul 15 - Jul 25
