Message from Mayor Cathy Olesen Fall is upon us and with it comes exciting new opportunities and changes. Our community is growing and we constantly strive to provide the best services for our residents. The Open Space and Recreation Facility Strategy is a great example of this. Keep an eye open for your opportunity to provide input into some of the exciting phases of this project. Stay active with your family this fall. Did you know all it takes is 30 minutes of physical activity each day to stay healthy? Take your family over to Millennium Place and sign up for a Millennium Card to kick-start your healthy routine for fall. If you enjoy group exercise, then take a browse through this recreation guide to find a program that’s new to you. There are many great programs so you are sure to find something for the whole family. Looking to explore your creative side? Try a culture program. There are many opportunities from photography, to pottery and even Christmas craft workshops. In the spirit of community living,

Cathy Olesen, MAYOR

Take a look on page 46 of the recreation guide for the new section which combines adult and older adult programs. You will notice some of the programs now have levels within them. These levels define the fitness levels which the instructors will work within. Questions? Kelly 780-416-7213 Terry 780-416-7234

Program Notes

Preschool

Welcome to Preschool...each day your child will need A light snack (no peanut butter or nuts of any kind). Comfortable play clothes and clean rubber-soled shoes for minigym sessions (for health reasons bare feet are not permitted). "Craft friendly" clothes.

Please ensure all snacks & lunches are nut-free.

The benefits of a preschool program Early childhood experiences such as playing, singing and creating serve as a strong foundation for a child’s future. Preschool programs offer young children the opportunity to develop social and learning skills that help encourage self-esteem, independence, self-awareness and acceptance. Through play, children in our programs are introduced to learning concepts such as colours, shapes, numbers and letters. Social interaction is encouraged through a variety of circle-time activities, while craft activities provide the opportunity for a child to fully express his/her creativity.

Parent participation We offer both parented and un-parented preschool programs. If this is the first time your child has been in a program or your little one isn’t ready to be left, our parented programs are a great way for your child to become comfortable with an instructor and familiar with working in a group. For those parents who are looking at a transition program to ease their children into independence we recommend our Ready, Set, Go program. The first hour is parented and the last hour parents meet in a separate room for an informative parenting session. Once your children are ready to venture out on their own we have a variety of unparented programs to choose from. We strive to provide programming for the varying needs of parents and children. While parents are always welcome to visit the classroom we ask that you understand the purpose of the programs and respect the difference between parented and un-parented classes. To allow parents to fully participate, we request that childcare arrangements be made for younger siblings.

Health Note: Does your child require an Epi-pen? For your child’s safety, please fill out the medical forms prior to the first class and indicate this on the registration form. Medical forms are available at the Recreation Administration Office (2025 Oak Street in Sherwood Park). Please note that your child must bring an Epi-pen to stay on the 1st day of programs. All preschool toys and equipment are cleaned and disinfected accordingly: • small toys & centre activities (1x per week) • all large gym equipment (1x per session)

Preschool notables • Age appropriate activities are key to enhancing self-esteem and learning. As such, it is important that children turn the required age prior to program start date. • All preschool classes begin and end promptly at the times indicated for each program (a late pick-up procedure is used which requires a signature). • Preschool programs are not equipped to change diapers. It is recommended that your child be fully toilet trained before being registered in an un-parented program. Parents will be contacted by telephone to attend to diapering needs. • Preschool programs are for those children registered in the program only, so please make arrangements for your other children. • Parents will be asked to complete participant forms on day one. Please schedule your time accordingly. • Preschool classes operate regardless of weather. • Clearly label all your child’s belongings. • To help you find the right class for your child, take a look at the chart on page 32. Special dates Omit Date: Oct 12, Nov 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 Special needs For questions regarding special needs contact a preschool programmer prior to registration at 780-464-8234

Swimming Descriptions

Red Cross Swim Kids Programs 6Y+ This 10-level program for school aged children helps swimmers develop all six swimming strokes (front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke). Swimmers actively learn how to be safe around the water, increase fitness and improve endurance through fun activities. Children are challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which is a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

Level 1

Level 7

• orientation to water and pool area, introduce floats & glides with kicks. • build endurance by improving distance.

• continue to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke; introduce whip kick on the front. • learn about airway/breathing obstructions; increase endurance through timed water-treading and a 150m swim.

Level 2 • build skills for front/back swims in deep water; build endurance in flutter kicking with assisted glides. • learn proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Level 3 • learn front crawl, diving and making wise choices surrounding swims. • work on floats, changing direction; build strength in flutter kick and 15m swim.

Level 8 • introduce breaststroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. • learn the dangers of open water, hypothermia; perform rescue breathing on children and adults; build endurance through dolphin kick and 300m swim.

Level 9/10 In level 9

Level 4 • develop front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl. • work on kneeling dives, surface support; build strength in 25m swim; develop sense of self-safety and personal limits.

• refine front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke; combine different strokes and kicks for fitness;build endurance through 400m swim. • work on head-first shallow dives & standing dives; learn about wise choices, peer influences, and self-rescue from ice.

Level 5

In level 10

• develop back crawl, sculling skills, stride-dives, safe boating skills & whip kick on back • develop endurance through dolphin kick and 50m swim.

• further refine strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick. • learn about sun safety, rescuing others from the ice, & head-first, feet first shallow dives • build endurance using dolphin kick; butterfly drills and 500m swim.

Level 6 • refine front and back crawl; introduce elementary backstroke; build endurance through a 75m swim. • introduce safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and front dives.

Register early for evening swimming programs Swimming programs during evening times tend to fill up first. If your child is able to attend a swimming program during the daytime we recommend you try those times first. If not remember to register early as spots are limited.

Is there a value in putting my name on the waitlist? Spots in a swim program may become available after the program is full. When this happens, those that have been placed on the waitlist will be contacted. Waitlists also help programmers plan the most efficient use of space for future cycles.

Free time between swimming programs Lower level swimming programs are in high demand. Please review all swimming options possible to coordinate all your children's programs. Please be flexible.
