Spring 2018 Series Roderick Williams and English Song

Debussy and Rodrigo

Baritone Roderick needs little introduction and his performances of English music are greatly admired. This evening's conductor, Patrycja Pieczara, is one of Poland's most outstanding young conductors, making a global name for herself conducting from Tokyo and Istanbul to Ankara and Paris.

An opportunity to commemorate the centenary of Debussy's death (25 March 1918) with his enchanting 'Children's Corner' and 'Petite Suite'. Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto is deservedly popular and we are joined by OOTS Associate Artist Pedro H. da Silva to perform this masterpiece.

Beethoven’s Triple Concerto

Peter Donohoe and Shostakovich are an unmissable combination and Prokofiev's joyous Classical Symphony provides a suitable preface to a performance by one of the foremost pianists of our time.

David Starkey Henry VIII: The First Brexiteer?

Friday 23rd February 2018 7.30pm

Henry VIII, like a colossus, bestrides the history of our country. He invented the idea of British uniqueness; in fact, the Reformation could be defined as the first Brexit, when his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. In this talk David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry’s reign to examine his tumultuous personal life, which pitted religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of Isis, through to the Grand Tourists who bought European culture with British money, all offering so very many parallels with the Brexit situation we find ourselves in today.
