St. Pius X Catholic School Message from the Principal
A Message from the Principal Season’s greetings! Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Our St. Pius X School and prayer community’s response to those in need this holiday season has been overwhelming. In the past few weeks we have donated hundreds of coats and mittens to children and adults in our local community who will need them as the cold weather approaches. Since Hurricane Sandy struck, we have sent carloads of baby food, diapers, cleaning items, food and blankets to the metropolitan area to aid in the relief effort. And while helping those in need locally and in the New York City area, our school families have not forgotten their own. Our school Christmas Giving Trees, which not long ago were decorated with countless ornaments that represented gifts of food, clothes and toys for our own students and their families, are now almost bare. Your generosity and compassion will brighten the Christmas of some of your children’s classmates and their parents. Those families are forever grateful for the gift of joy you help give their children on Christmas morning.
The theme for December is
Caring and Generosity
Special points of interest: Prayer and Share Day Winter’s Night Out
The faculty, staff and students of St. Pius X are excited about the approach of Christmas and the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. While we all delight in the smiles of our students and the excitement that the advent season brings, we remain mindful that the greatest gift we will receive this year will not come wrapped in paper and decorated with bows. Long after new toys are put away and Teddy bears have settled into their new homes, God’s gift to us, His only Son, will remain with us forever. On behalf of Father Farano, Father Butler, Father Walsh, and our entire faculty and staff, I wish you all a very blessed and merry Christmas, and I thank you for being a part of our school community. Yours in Christ,
Giving Tree Native American Day

Students Give Back to The Community
Eighth grade students carry items that were donated by the school community for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Third graders collect “Coats for Kids. Through your generosity, the students collected 220 coats for children and adults.
Third Grader Olivia Dickinson shops for Hurricane Sandy victims. Olivia bought $200 worth of supplies and brought the items to St. Pius X school and the CNY Storm All-Stars for delivery to the metro area. Thanks, Olivia.
Helping Our Furry Friends
The 5th grades collected food, treats, toys and litter for Heart's Herd Animal Sanctuary in Buskirk, NY. They also donated $156.75 to the sanctuary. Their donations will help homeless animals in need through the winter. The funds will help with veterinarian services too. Thank you, fifth grade!

On Saturday, January 12, 2013, the St. Pius X School Board will sponsor A Winter’s Night Out in Miami at The Desmond Hotel in Albany, New York. This annual event provides an opportunity for parents, friends, and patrons of St. Pius X School to come together for an evening of entertainment while raising money for our parish school. We anticipate that over 300 people will attend A Winter’s Night Out in Miami this year! Through silent and live auctions conducted during the evening, this event also serves as the single largest fundraising activity for St. Pius X School each year. Last year the generosity shown by parents, parishioners, friends, and other supporters helped raise over $50,000 for the School! We were able to help purchase new computers in our upper wing Technology Lab. We hope that you will help us make this evening a success by donating an item or gift certificate that can be used in the silent or live auction. In addition to receiving recognition for your donation, your name and/or the name of your business will be included in that evening’s program. If you would like to make a donation, please complete the enclosed Auction Donation Form and return it to St. Pius X School office c/o Maria Brunell. If you would like to have your donation picked up or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school office at 465-4539. Your continuing support and commitment to St. Pius X School and the success of this event is genuinely appreciated. Sincerely, A Winter’s Night Out in Miami Auction Committee

Team Captain/MVP William Conklin ,St. Pius Class of 2012, was MVP of his Shenendehowa freshman soccer team. He was also named team captain. The team ended the season with an 8-4-3 record, going 7-1 over the last eight games. Congratulations Will, keep up the great work!
St. Pius X Grad Shines at Albany High Congratulations to June Crisione, St. Pius X Class of 2009. June, who is now in her senior year at Albany High, just recorded a perfect score on the ACT Exam that she took last spring. She is currently ranked number one in her class, and she is a semi-finalist for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. When June is not “hitting the books,” she is working hard as a member of the Albany High Speech & Debate Team, and the Model United Nations and Masterminds teams. She also runs track and cross country, and she is an accomplished violinist in Albany High’s Advanced Orchestra and the Empire State Youth Orchestra. St. Pius X School is proud of all of our graduates, and we are glad to see that June has accomplished so much since she graduated from our 8th grade.
More Alumni News Congratulations to Colleen Felt, St. Pius X Grad Colleen Felt, St. Pius X class of 2010, has been awarded the “SportsmanshipAward” by her Shaker High School soccer coach. The Sportsmanhip Award is given annually to that player who “… demonstrates generosity to her teammates and a genuine concern for others.” Her coach said that Colleen always “cheered for her teammates and applauded our opponents,” and after every practice and game, Colleen thanked her coach. This is the Colleen that we remember growing up at St. Pius X, and the one we are still proud of. Congratulations, Colleen.

Native American Day Our fourth graders participated in Native American Day! The day consisted of many activities to help the students learn about Native American culture.
The Siena college Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams spent the day with students teaching them how to play lacrosse. They explained that the game of lacrosse was a gift from our Native American predecessors.
The students made sun catchers, butter, cornhusk dolls and Native American headdresses.
News From the Cafeteria This year brings many changes to our menu due to new state and federal regulations. To mention a few: The maximum serving for meat is 2oz. a day or 10 oz a week with a minimum of 1 oz. a day. That goes for wraps, sandwiches, taco meat or turkey and gravy, etc. There is a maximum of 2 grains per day. We will no longer be offering bread as a side dish. The other big change is that a student MUST take a fruit OR vegetable along with their entrÊe to make a complete meal. If they do not have a complete meal, it rings up as ala carte and this could actually cost more than the 2.50. We are offering more choices of fruits and encourage the students to take them. We do still offer snacks and bottled water . Please discuss these items with your children and whether it is okay for them to use their account to purchase snacks or water. If you prefer they do not use their account for these purchases, please let me know so I can enter it into the system. We encourage everyone to take advantage of our prepay system and send a check (made out to NCCS food service) or cash to the school to be deposited in your child's account .Please note that if you prepay 50.00 into their account they will receive one bonus free lunch. You can also pay on-line at www.PayPams.com. You will receive notices when your child’s account is low or if they owe money. These notices go home with the children, so please check with your child periodically. Thank You, Dawn Souza Cafeteria Manager
