ear SPYC Members, It is hard to believe how fast this year has gone and that I’m writing my last Commodore’s Log. The job of being Commodore has been time-consuming and a lot of work, but also very fun and rewarding. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Club. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with wonderful people with diverse skills. We have worked together to solve complex issues as a team. I’m humbled by the thought that I have grown as a person and gained more from this experience than I have contributed. I have truly enjoyed this and will miss serving in this capacity. I would like to thank my fellow flag officers. They have shown me leadership, wisdom and strength. In addition, I’d like to thank all the Past-Commodores, who contributed their institutional knowledge, guidance, advice and friendship.

Looking back on the year, the highlight for me was seeing that our members were able to enjoy a balance between fun and safety at the club. I would like to thank our club’s excellent management and staff for making this possible.

As the Club goes forward, we are in a great financial position, many new members are joining and we have superb leaders who will take my place. We also have an exceptional slate of candidates running for election to the Board of Directors. This year’s Annual Meeting and Election is Tuesday, October 12th. Please remember to vote in this important election and plan to attend the meeting in person or via the YouTube Live, virtual option.

Finally, I’ll make mention of what is most important: my family.

As many of you know, I began my sailing career when I was nine years old. My parents, Frank and Kathy, enrolled me in the Junior Sailing program. The sport of sailing made SPYC my second home.

I’m proud to represent this great club and to have had the opportunity to give back to an institution which has given so much to us. When I was asked to serve as Commodore, I was told there would be many Club obligations, which would call me away from home. My lovely wife (Amy) and our children (Dorothy, Adam, and Reid) have supported me every step of the way. They have made a sacrifice so I could do this job.

I look forward to using my new free time toward being the best husband, father, and son I can be!

D

ear Members, As I write this article, I have one month under my belt and feel I’ve covered a lot of ground in a short period.

I continue to see tremendous opportunities to grow and enhance this already “Gem” of a Club. I have met a good number of the membership and now know most all the great staff that continue creating memorable experiences for you all.

In bringing the Team together we have come up with an “Employee Mission Statement” that like the Club’s mission statement will help guide our Team in one direction in making SPYC the best it can be. I would like to share it with you here and encourage you to ask the staff about it.

An “Above Board” Yacht Club that meets and exceeds the needs and expectations of our members, transient boaters, and guests.

We offer the finest service and amenities with a professional appearance and punctual attitude.

We are empowered to use our imagination, creativity and 110% can do attitude to create a memorable experience and atmosphere.

We are knowledgeable, responsible, and good listeners while serving our members.

In addition, we have come up with “Service Standards” and “Core Values” which I will share with you in the coming months editions of Smooth Sailing.

Our Tiki Bar project is complete, and we were able to open back up earlier that anticipated for the Labor Day weekend.

The Pass-a-Grille shutdown and renovation is coming along

nicely, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on October 7th. The Heritage Lounge chairs have arrived, and we are completing the powder room project by the time you read this edition of Smooth Sailing.

Reservations please! Grille 1909 is open for dinner service and to serve you better we strongly encourage reservations.

I cannot stress the importance of reservations here at the Club. As we closed out 2021 fiscal year with usage in the Club rising, despite the unprecedented time we are in, 20212022 is showing early signs that this trend will continue. It is very helpful that you try and honor your reservation time.

So many times, members are enjoying the camaraderie of their friends, which is what a Club is about, and time slips away and then everyone decides to sit all at once. This is when it becomes more difficult to serve you in a manner that is expected of us. Reservations help us plan accordingly in making sure we have the appropriate staff on the floor and product on hand.

Mask Please! We all have choices to make in life and the Club and its Leadership choose to maintain its mask wearing policy for all, Members, Guests, and Staff alike while inside all our properties. It comes down to respecting one another to protect one another. I thank you in advance for your cooperation during these difficult and unprecedented times.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank Commodore Mendelblatt for his leadership this past year, each year comes with its unique challenges and this past year sure has been one to remember, or not. One of the biggest accomplishments that I am most appreciative of was bringing me aboard this fine Club!

I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months as I make myself visible around our various facilities.

ANNUAL ELECTION & MEETING Tuesday, October 12th Voting Options & Instructions

PYC members have a choice of three voting options for this year’s Board of Directors election taking place Tuesday, October 12th. Please review the details on this page carefully.

OPTION 1 – In-Person Voting Day of Election .Members may choose to attend in person to cast their vote.

Voting will take place downstairs in the Quarterdeck Room, which will be set-up to abide by the CDC’s physical distancing guidelines and meet SPYC’s sanitation standards. Polls will be open on October 12th beginning at 11:30 am and closes promptly at 7:30 pm.

OPTION 2 – Request an Absentee Ballot via Email Send your Absentee Ballot request to: Election@spyc.org 1. One request, per membership, may be made for an absentee ballot through Email; please include your member number when requesting.

2. All ballots sent via Email are REQUIRED to be mailed back (via USPS) to the Membership Office before day of election, October 12th. (Ballots returned via Email cannot be counted as a valid vote.)

OPTION 3 – Cast Your Absentee Ballot In-Person .Members who wish to cast an Absentee Ballot in person at the Club, before October 12th, may do so by visiting the Membership Office during business hours: Tuesday-Friday between 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, OR Saturdays between 11:30 am – 4:00 pm.

3. The following information is required to be placed on the backside of your return envelope: a) Name of Member who is Voting, b) Member Number, and c) please reference, “Absentee Ballot”.

4. Ballots returned by mail will not be opened by any individual of the SPYC Management or Staff, therefore we require the above information on your envelope in order for your ballot to be accurately accounted for by the SPYC Election Personnel.

America’s Great Loop: In recognition of those who have completed one or more “Loops” around the Eastern third of the U.S. via desginated routes.

World Champions Trophy: To members who have won the World Championships as Skippers in One Design Regattas or Match Racing World Finals.

SPYC Junior Sailing Update by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

O

ver Labor Day weekend the SPYC Junior Sailing Team traveled to Sarasota to compete in the annual Sarasota Labor Day Regatta. Temps were hot and the breeze was light and our SPYC sailors showed they have been working hard and are ready for a great fall season.

On the Laser Course SPYC was well represented with 13 sailors competing. In the Standard Rig fleet, SPYC’s Guthrie Braun finished in 1st place overall followed by Ethan Danielson in 3rd. In the Laser Radial Fleet, Kate Danielson took home the overall win followed by Bella Shakespeare in 2nd, Callen Burnett in 3rd, Anthony Smart in 4th, and Jack Carter in 5th. In the 4.7 fleet Jan Mistak finished in 2nd overall and was followed by Sophia Fuller in 5th. On the Opti RWB course SPYC was well represented with 21 sailors participating.

Our top finishers in the overall results were John Hartney in 2nd overall, Blake Vincent in 3rd, Rosie Simpson in 5th, Daniel Smith in 7th and Chris Shaffer in 10th. Also of important note was Leah Abrams winning 1st overall in the white fleet, Thomas Weidner in 3rd in white fleet, Ethan Cox in 4th, and Dalton Cellemare in 5th. The 2021 SPYC Summer Sailing Camp has come to a close and we are proud to say that we taught over 450 kids how to sail. Please stay tuned for fall/winter/ spring classes as we will continue to promote the sport of sailing to the youth of St. Petersburg.

The SPYC Junior Sailing Team is also excited to welcome new coaches Ian Linberger and Ainsley Parramore to the staff. Ian fill be focusing on the Laser and High School kids while Ainsley will be working with our SPYC Green Fleet Racing Team.

SPYC Returns to the “Hinman Masters”

A

team of 11 SPYC sailors competed in the 20th Hinman Masters August 8-10th at New York Yacht Club’s Harbor Court station in Newport, RI, returning to this by invitation only event for the first time since 2009. Nine teams from 8 clubs from around the country competed over three days in NYYC’s fleet of Sonars for what is considered to be the master’s team racing national championship for skippers over 45 years old and crews older than 40. This event is truly special, with every attention to detail managed flawlessly as NYYC executed to their traditional world-class standard of excellence.

The level of competition matched NYYC’s performance, with rosters featuring former collegiate All Americans, team race champions and America’s Cup sailors. As a result, races were intense, with many of the five-leg, 12 to15 minute races decided in the final boat lengths. As opposed to SPYC’s Master Driver 2 vs. 2 team race regatta, where whichever team whose boat finishes last loses the race, the Hinman Masters is 3v3, where the winning combinations of finishes is more diverse.

As each team’s three boats not only try to go fast and assess wind shifts and the strong Narragansett Bay current, they are simultaneously determining their team’s individual positions and what strategic actions against an opponent they should take, and which opponent to take it against!

The complexity is as much about setting up your position down the leg as it is focusing on an opposing skipper trying to trap you right now. To say that the strategic decisions are dynamic would be an understatement, analogous to threedimensional chess. After a 12 year gap in attendance, SPYC

demonstrated that they possessed the talent and experience to be competitive. A slow start on Friday grew to a strong start Saturday morning, with SPYC winning their first three races of round robin #2, with several other close wins slipping through their grasp. Sunday similarly started well, though the wind died and a strong ebb current forced the third round robin to be cancelled. The team left Newport excited about deepening our experience, with a goal to eventually win the regatta, just as we finally won our own Master Driver event.

On a shelf in the Lobby Library resides what looks like a an old spittoon from the days of yore.

And that's exactly what it is! What ii stands for is about to be revealed. Please read on!

The history behind this trophy is colorful and light-hearted. There are different versions of the acquisition of said object, but this one seems to be the most repeated (and printable).

While in New Orleans for a regatta, PC W.W. “Doc” Jennings and Dick Misener were “… window shopping in a house of ill-repute.” While there, the duo spotted this shiny object and decided it would make an amusing trophy. After quenching their thirst and preparing to leave, Dick created a distraction and “Doc” “liberated” the spittoon!

The ROYAL GABOON Trophy

In 1948, George S. “Gidge” Gandy, Jr. originated the idea of a “fun race” where almost anything goes, but banned the use of motors – “No entry may be propelled by machinery…”Antics & chicanery prevailed in sailing vessels of all shapes and sizes.

In the beginning, the races were sailed to the Field Club in Sarasota which meant an overnight stay = a banquet and lots of merriment. In later years, the Gaboon was sailed to Tampa Y&CC, Davis Island YC and the most recent to Beer Can Island.

oin us for this year’s Poker Run! What is a Poker Run? It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run Day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off thier wellcurated boat themes. Upon arriving at the Club they will check-in and recieve a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day.

The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted.

Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand!

Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with! RESULTS: ST. PETERSBURG CLASSIC REGATTA

T

he 12th annual St Petersburg Classic Regatta was an excellent, successful, season kick-off race! This race was designed for boats more than 20 years old and has usually provided a parade of some real beauties.

Most surrounding activities were, once again, minimized because of the recurring virus challenges.

We did have many of the competitors at our docks and our Club delivered individual breakfasts to them. Many thanks to our catering staff for helping us adhere to social distancing needs. Our “virtual” Skippers’ meeting and other vital information was recorded and produced by our extraordinarily talented Club staff, particularly our Waterfront Director, Shawn Macking and Membership, Corey Hall.

Karen Park. Salty, Sue Davidson, skippered her boat, Grrrrr. The winners of the Spinnaker division were two martin sailboats, both yacht club folks, Dr. Mike Siedlecki and Meg & Lon Ethington. Shazaam! won the cruising class, followed by Mojo and Koinonia.

This charity event for Neighborly, the “Meals-on-Wheels” organization, accumulated over $45,000, more than $150,000 over the years of this regatta. The event was coordinated with a strong team from Neighborly, headed

by Susan McIntyre and Lisa Ferrer. Our Club team was Jody Abrams and Rich Treinen (they also raced!) and the race committee: Selga Sakss, Barbara and Paul Goodman, Valerie and Larry Massingill and me, Gloria Davis. Our regatta season has begun!

On race day, September 11th, we experienced the best of luck with a bit of wind, no thunder and not much rain (until most of us had returned to the docks!) We only had 21 boats this year, one of our lightest years to date. Our Commodore was out there with his children. They came in first in the non-spinnaker division. Antonio Sanpere on CAYENNITA III followed him. We had two Salty Sister Sonar teams, captained by Els Wiemken, our Salty Captain, and

INGREDIENTS CRAWFISH CAKES 1 lb. crawfish tail meat 4 large tbsp. mayonnaise 2 large tbsp. Gulden's Spicy Brown

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all ingredients but crawfish or salmon. Fold in at the end.

2. Form into cakes and refrigerate.

3. Pan fry until golden brown.

4. Serve immediately.

2 oz. whiskey 1 oz. fresh peach juice 1 2 oz. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. crushed red pepper cherries for garnish

Pour all ingredients into a shaker over ice. Shake vigorously. Strain crushed pepper and pour. Garnish with cherries.

Jalapeno Infused Pineapple Juice: 1 cup pineapple juice 1 jalapeno For the Cocktail: 2 oz. jalapeno infused pineapple juice 1 oz. tequila 1 4 oz. coconut rum 1 4 oz. fresh lime juice 1 oz. prosecco

Chop a jalapeno and add it to a cup of pineapple juice for 24 hours. To make a spicier cocktail, add a second chopped jalapeno. Add 2 oz. spicy pineapple juice, tequila, coconut rum, and lime juice to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Remove shaker top and all prosecco. Gently stir, replace the top and pour into chilled glass.

ROYAL FLUSH

3 oz. cranberry juice 1 1 2 oz. Royal Crown 3 4 oz. peach schnapps 1 2 oz. black raspberry liqueur maraschino cherry to garnish

Combine the cranberry juice, Royal Crown, peach schnapps, and black raspberry liqueur in a cocktail shaker. Pour the contents of the shaker into an ice filled glass. Garnish with cherry.

T

he hot month of August did not deter the Fleet from weighing anchor and heading to Sarasota Yacht Club. Even with the Yacht Club’s unscheduled closure, our Port Directors (Rob & Michele Matthes) took advantage of their pool and served the Fleet BVI Pain Killers on Friday to set the mood.

Friday night included dinner at the Bird Key Yacht Club, followed by a stormy sky and lightening dinghy ride back to SYC by the Cross’s and Matthes’. “Red sky in the morning Sailors take warning”.

Saturday was “on your own” with many cruisers using the pool as their own private oasis, swimming, more Pain Killers, and ended with a wonderful Italian dinner at Le Colonne restaurant on St Armand’s Key.

Entertainment was provided by Tim Connelly as he recalled the infamous history of his great, great, great Grandfather! Once again, our Port Directors arranged an enjoyable weekend full of camaraderie, relaxation, and great memories.

In September we held our Monthly Dinner, which included a well-received presentation by Gary Serventi & Kevin Sherburne of HWH Electronics Corporation, on the latest advances in marine electronics.

n Wednesday, July 21st, Captain Els Weimken welcomed everyone with her hearty “Ahoy Salties.”

She then introduced our soon retiring GM, Marc Reydams, as our guest speaker. Marc shared an interesting piece of Salty Sister history from the November 1962 Smooth Sailing. Reading from the tiny booklet, he joked they must have had better eyesight back then. On October 16th, 1962 Ruth Herbert was the first Salty to flip her Pram on a jibe.

She was rescued in a minute by Ed Willis. She was happy to report that not a strand of her lovely hairdo got wet. This was the first reported time a Pram turned over in Salty history.

“A wonderful time was had by all.” (That wording appears in every article.)

Two Salties, Helle Getz and Barbara Mehaffey, along with several other SPYC Members, were Race Committee for the Chicago-to-Mackinac Race that ran in July this year. Helle was PRO and Barbara was Chief Recorder. Go Salties!!!!

The second week of August, two more Salties headed up to Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, located on Lake Erie, for the Lightning National. Both Gina Bowden-Pierce and Helle Getz were a big part of Race Committee for that week!

Co-Captain Jennifer Parramore has planned two weeks of powerboat skills class for the last two weeks of August.

Captain Zac Oppenheim will be our instructor again this year.

Beginning September, the Salty Sisters are now back on the water sailing!!!

D

uring the summer of 1970, Nancy Lucas, wife of then-Pass-a-Grille Commodore, John Lucas, started to solicit members for a women’s sailing organization to represent their yacht club.

The Broad Reachers of Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club were officially formed on January 4, 1971 at the first General Meeting held in the home of Mrs. Louise (B.Z.) Gilman. The name “Broad Reachers” was officially adopted at that meeting.

Over the years, the Broad Reachers have continued to function as a social organization for the purpose of promoting sailing interest and sailing ability among its members.

The Broad Reachers sail weekly on Saturday mornings from September through June, provide an annual round of social events and, for a time, used to conduct a Junior Sailing program each June. The program was offered free of charge to children, grandchildren, and relatives of club members. Prior to 2009, proceeds from the Valentines’ Day Ball and the Spring Garage Sale were used to fund the program that was run by Broad Reacher volunteers and their spouses. In 2009, support of the program was also approved by SPYC and on the water instructors were provided by the Sailing Center.

Fourteen Vanguard Dinghies are available for member’s use. Weekly sailing instruction is provided for new sailors. In addition to Saturday sailing, the Broad Reachers sponsor fun sails, and annual races, such as: Halloween Costume Race, Turkey Race, the Annual Commodore Lucas Invitational Ladies Pram Regatta, the Nancy Lucas Race, and the Nona Bolster Race.

The eleven charter members were: Evelyn Emmons, Dorothy Ferris, Louise Houser, Marion West, Bubs Scott, B.Z. Gilman, Jeannie Paige, Jackie Mills, Nancy Lucas, Marge Scott, and Doris Masergh. Louise Houser remains a Charter Member today!

HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY BROAD REACHERS!!!

Since its founding, the group has continued to promote sailing among its members and to provide training for Junior Sailors. The group is a member of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association and participates in, and sponsors, interclub races and regattas.

t’s a yacht club...but you don’t need a boat to enjoy all there is to offer by being a member! The FCYC has embraced the RV lifestyle as well, now that they realize how many of their members have “land” yachts…RVs that is. Just like our own RV Land Cruisers group, the FCYC has formed a Land Cruisers group.

All members of any of the FCYC member clubs can be part of the group.

The FCYC RV Land Cruisers had their first outing in June at the River Ranch RV Resort, and the next one is this month October 21st -25th at Keystone Heights RV Resort. Time to get those reservations in if you haven’t already. Another expanded event is being considered for the spring (more details on that later).

M

angle Mango is a backyard version of baseball. It’s not the best way to discover, as Breck Amick did, an allergic reaction to the fallen fruit of the mango tree.

Breck survived and went on to star on his high school swimming team as a diver. He went to Clarion University and the University of Florida, and achieved 4 time All American honors. His stellar moment came in a dual meet with the University of Miami where he won the 3 meter spring board by beating the 2 time British Olympian and current NCAA Champion, Chris Snode, as well another serious contender - a four time gold medal Olympic diver named Greg Louganis.

Breck Amick is the owner of the Amick & Son Pest Control company. The company was started by his grandfather and handed down, father to son, twice. He was persuaded to join the Wing Shooters by a friend in the Dragon Club. As a hunter and trap shooter, it was an easy sell.

Needing a more suitable gun for sporting clays, Breck upgraded to a Winchester 101 by trading part ownership in and old boat he owned with his brother. The details of how his brother collected his half of the trade are a bit sketchy.

There’s one more thing about Breck that started with his grandfather, his Yacht Club membership. Breck’s number is less than 50. That Dragon Club friend’s number is less than 20.

Needless to say having good friends is what the Wing Shooters is all about.

e unanimously agreed that this past month was too hot for golf in Florida! On August 23rd the Golf Group trekked to Tampa’s” Top Golf” for a mid-day event, high on socializing and team bonding with good eats and beverages. There was no pressure about having a good golf swing or making a lot of points with a big score. The emphasis at this venue is on a blend of golf technology and entertainment to make the day fun filled. Climate controlled hitting bays view targets to try and a scoreboard for each team. Fourteen players filled three driving range bays cooled by big fans and set up with high top tables and couches.
