TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Jeremiah urged the people of Jerusalem to surrender to the enemy. This angered the princes, who then requested that Jeremiah be put to death. The king allowed the princes to leave him in a cistern without food or water. But after Ebed Melech pleaded for Jeremiah's life, the king decided to free him. Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4 This letter to the Hebrews inspires all Christians to persevere, in spite of the trials they may face. Jesus endured much suffering and was rewarded by God. Despite our struggles, we must remember Jesus' ability to endure and maintain strong faith in him. Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus tells his disciples that his message will not bring peace to the earth. Instead, even families will become sharply divided because some members will embrace him, while others condemn him. ©2000 Bon Venture Services, Inc. READINGS FOR THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 25 First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21 Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 Gospel: Luke 13:22-30 HOSPITAL VISITS Due to privacy laws, we are no longer able to obtain names of parishioners in the hospital. If anyone has a planned or unexpected hospital stay, please have a family member call the rectory office to indicate if they would like to have a visit from our pastoral staff.

Please note ~ there will be no 6:30 am Mass on Thursday, August 22nd

 A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE  Today Jesus warns us his Word will create conflict between parents and children. In a permissive society which advocates individualism and consumerism, parents must continue to teach and live the gospel values of respect, service to others, forgiveness, generosity and compassion. A Christian family is a countercultural family.

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME STEWARDSHIP CORNER In today’s second reading, St. Paul encourages us not to grow weary or lose heart, but to persevere in following Jesus. LECTIO DIVINA Revisiting the Ancient Practice of Sacred Reading, listening with the “ear” of the heart. Lectio Divina, the ancient Christian practice of prayer and scripture reading intended to help us enter deeply into the presence of God, will begin again next month. Sessions will be held on: Monday, September 9th at 10:30 a.m. (Ilse Nigro) in the choir room, and Tuesday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. (Maria Roja) in a classroom. Lectio Divina allows us to find Jesus in his Word, in the silence, and in our lives. When we reconnect with the Lord by listening to him, our lives take on new power and meaning. All are invited to join us for this wonderful practice.

Faith Formation - Showing Others the Way to Jesus! Here we are in the middle of August already - with one month left before we begin CCD classes! Please know how grateful I am for those who have come forward to share their gift of faith with the children of St. Peter Claver Church! Please take a moment to read the “Tell Us Why” letters written by our recently confirmed students. These young adults share with us the importance of learning and growing in their Catholic faith. We are grateful to their parents who have asked the Church to help them fulfill the promise made at their child’s Baptism - to bring them up with Faith! Our recent Confirmation Class were asked to Tell Us Why they chose to be confirmed adult members of the Church. These newly confirmed young adults share their thoughts with our Pastor and Parish Family ~ and we welcome them as fully initiated members of the Church! Dear Fr. Leary and my Parish Family, Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had a very strong relationship with God. When I was baptized, it was my parents decision to introduce me into the religion of God, Jesus and Mary. When I began my years of CCD, I was taught more and more what the Catholic religion was all about - and how strong this connection with God would carry me through life. I received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Communion and it was a joyful time in my life because I knew it would be building the bond I already had with God. Now I am 15 years old and it is my choice and my decision whether I wanted to confirm my faith with God and myself. It’s no question for me because it has been my dream since forever to be confirmed! My relationship with God is what has shaped me into the kind and loving of person I am today. Whenever I am in a tough situation, I think to myself, “What would Jesus do?” Life does get tough sometimes, but I know that as long as God is with me, everything will turn out alright. Every Sunday when I come to Church and every night when I pray, I can feel God in my heart and I know this connection is becoming deeper and deeper. Jesus is with me and I know I’m prepared for this path I have chosen to take. Sincerely, Elizabeth
