THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 This reading is a brief passage from the Songs of the Suffering Servant. The Servant will establish justice on the earth and open the eyes of those who live in darkness. Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38 In this reading, Peter gives his first sermon to pagans. Asked by a Roman centurian to preach the Gospel to his household, Peter is initially astounded by the request, but after a dream, Peter preaches and baptizes the entire household. Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17 After initially protesting his unworthiness, John baptizes Jesus. After the baptism, the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus and a voice said, “This is my beloved Son. My favor rests on him.” ©1998 Bon Venture Services, Inc. READINGS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 19

We thank you for your continued kindness and generosity.  A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE  The words in today’s gospel, “This is my beloved, with Him I am pleased,” are words every child needs to hear often. Affirmation is important to raise happy and confident children.

Gifting and Re-gifting Exchanging gifts can be challenging. For instance, what do you give the person who “has everything”? What if that person has been very generous to you? What if that Person is God? Now there is a gifting challenge!

As part of our parish’s 2014 Stewardship effort two adult faith st nd formation sessions will be offered, on January 21 and 22 respectively at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. (1) God’s Gifts to Us -The first session focuses on our understanding of God as an extravagant gift-giver who wants to be in relationship with us and who invites us to respond with our own self-gift to God and to the world. (2) My Gift? What Gift? – The second session provides time and space for starting to discern how God may be calling you personally to participate in the church’s mission to the world. Methods of discernment are introduced, and examples of saints’ journeys of discernment are shared. The sessions are interactive, with small-group and general discussion as well as some presentation. Come to both if your schedule permits; or just come to one. Presenter: Joan Kennedy develops and delivers adult faith formation programs with the aim of empowering the laity. An experienced teacher, business person, artist, and docent, she has recently become more empowered by earning a Master of Theological Studies degree at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.

The Baptism of the Lord The Lord will bless His people with peace. Psalm 29:11 Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. On this day we remember the words that God spoke as His Spirit descended upon Jesus, “You are my beloved Son, on You my favor rests.” Just as God filled Jesus with courage to carry out His work in this world, we are called to live our Baptismal promises to love and obey God and to bring His peace to all - our families, our friends, at Church, at home, and at school. Let us pray… God our Father, You have given us new life through the waters of Baptism. Keep us faithful to our baptismal promises to follow You and help us to trust in God’s will for our lives. May our love for You show in our thoughts and actions, and may we come to You when we are need of Your peace in our hearts. We ask this in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
