Is sex being sold on your street?
WHY SHOULD I HELP?
FACTS • Sex is being sold on the street, from massage parlours, saunas, brothels and even from residential properties.
If you can help to identify premises that may be selling sex, you will be helping to protect those people inside who don’t want to be there.
• A nyone who is managing, controlling or forcing someone else to sell sex is committing a crime. • There are over 150 establishments that advertise the selling of sex and sexual services in Bristol.
These individuals may be under age persons who are vulnerable and in many cases have been the victims of Human Trafficking.
• A ny of these establishments could be near where you live or where you work.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Many of them are now being exploited by criminals who do not care, so don’t let them get away with it?
This leaflet urges you to contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, which is NOT part of the police, about any premises you suspect is being used to sell sex from or anyone you know who is managing, controlling or forcing someone else to sell sex or any other crime. You can contact Crimestoppers anonymously by phone on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org to pass on information, without any risk to you as no one will ever know where the information came from. All information will be passed onto the police.
Please see the Crimestoppers Guarantee in this leaflet.
HOW WOULD I SPOT SUCH A PREMISES? • • • • •
Different men calling at the property – arriving at all times of the day and night and not staying long. Different women entering the property – maybe on the same day of the week. Women being dropped off and picked up by someone – again this may be on the same day every week. Women who look young or foreign entering and leaving the property. Windows blacked out and / or C.C.T.V at the address.
The above information is a guide as to what to look out for. Even if only one relates to a premises you suspect is being used to sell sex, PLEASE CONTACT US.
WHAT IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING?
“Human trafficking is the movement of people by means such as force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them.” It is modern day slavery and it is happening in Bristol.
HOW THE INFORMATION YOU GIVE WILL HELP OTHERS Bristol has a dedicated police team who regularly visit known premises with other agencies to check for vulnerable, exploited, trafficked and under age persons. Any new information will allow the team to identify presently unknown premises, which will help to establish the extent of the problem in Bristol. If a vulnerable person is found the police team will ensure that they are offered appropriate support, often in conjunction with other partner organisations. Premises causing significant harm or impact on the community will also be targeted by law enforcement officers. Those criminals who benefit from managing, controlling or forcing someone to sell sex will be investigated and dealt with accordingly.
