Nineteen on the Park ‘too pricey’ for theatre group

Would Shakespeare perform at the Lebovic Centre for Arts & Entertainment – Nineteen on the Park?

Pricing at the Stouffville theatre has made it nearly impossible for the Stouffville Theatre Company to perform at the downtown hotspot.

After town council rejected its grant request in February, the company was scrambling to find alternative venues.

Though the fledgling amateur theatre group is not affiliated with the town or Nineteen on the Park, its members are all from Stouffville.

The local thespians requested a grant of $4,000 from town council in

January to cover costs of rehearsals, but soon found themselves rethinking their theatre strategy.

“We’ve either got to come up with some sponsors or find a different venue,” board member Patrick Lannigan said this spring. “We can’t afford Nineteen on the Park as it stands.”

The theatre company was quoted the price of $6,700 for the week to conduct a performance. They consider it a high price tag as the Uxbridge Music Hall – which has 300 seats as opposed to the Park’s 112 seats – charges $1,900 for the week.

But Nineteen on the Park has no trouble filling their calendar with performances from other theatre

and dance companies, according to cultural facility and programming coordinator Ashley Chappell.

“We’re lucky to have so many talented companies that call Stouffville home and utilize Nineteen on the Park on a regular basis,” she said in an email.

It was the last fully staged performance they had at the venue in accordance to a partnership deal between the company and the Nineteen on the Park board.

“We had a partnership agreement with the board, which meant we shared half the costs and we

share the revenue with 19 on the Park,” said theatre board member Marianne Lannigan. “We were denied partnership after the first couple shows because they said they were losing money.”

“For Nineteen on the Park to cover its costs, it needs to sell out every night. Which isn’t the case at other theatres,” she added.

Other theatres include Uxbridge Music Hall and the Parkview Village seniors’ complex auditorium, where the theatre company is now performing. Their performance at the Ninth Line facility Friday included a cameo by Mayor Justin Altmann. (See photograph on page 34.)

Whether it’s a matter of an

expensive venue or an underfunded theatre company, theatre company members say the town needs a theatre strategy.

With two per cent of the town’s operating budget allocated for arts and culture and a 20 per cent set aside for leisure services, the disparity is clear says Patrick Lannigan.

“Markham, Newmarket, these towns support their theatres,” he said. “Theatre brings people with disposable income to town, looking to eat and shop.”

Patrick explains a theatre strategy can boost the town’s economy and revitalize the downtown area.

He argues entertainment will give people a reason to be on Main Street.

How town council can get it right next time around

T

wo years from now we will be on the cusp of a municipal election.

A smattering of signs that don’t say ‘For Sale’ will have popped up on the lawns of the neighbours, one of whom will likely be running for a seat on council. Some of the signs will go missing or vandalized. Happens every election.

Wars of words will no doubt have erupted on Facebook or whatever form of social media is hip in 2018.

Will the issues that put a dark cloud over the Whitchurch-Stouffville municipal offices this year even be remembered?

That all depends on the action of the current town council.

Even if you’d need GPS to find the town council chambers, you’re probably well aware of the problems.

More than 30 staff members have left employment with the town in the past 18 months. (As I spoke to a member of council for this column, another senior worker announced his exit.)

If CAO Marc Pourvahidi does not return from townimposed administrative leave – which followed self-imposed sick leave – council will be hiring its second top administrator in just over a year.

The new CAO would be the third – not counting two interim CAOs – this council has had to work with. Councillors have been on the job for about 19 months.

Assuming Pourvahidi, who once went by “M.J.”, is not back, candidates for his job would have to label it “a career-building challenge”.

In normal times, municipal CAOs have about the same shelf life as NHL coaches and general managers. The expiry dates in Stouffville, which also saw Dave Cash suddenly exit as CAO in October 2013, have jumped up even more quickly

Council does not hire staffers, as at least one councillor told constituents in response to the exodus of people from the Sandiford Drive offices.

But council does hire CAOs, who lead the entire staff, from directors on down the chain.

And while some staffers say things are improving, they need a CAO big on team building and morale improvement. A combo of Mother Teresa, Mike Babcock and Tony Robbins.

So does council. The few who attend council meetings know of the great divides in the body we elected in 2014. The “smart-ass” exchange between Councillor Maurice Smith and Mayor Justin Altmann we wrote about too this spring often may have just been the red flag we all needed.

We’re not expecting everyone to sit around a campfire singing folk songs. Nor should everyone agree with everyone else on everything. Sober second thought is good. So are devil’s advocates.

A lot of what went down at town hall this term falls under “personnel”, meaning almost of all of it was discussed in private.

Still, council owes the taxpaying public and its staff a general explanation for what has happened – and what will take place going forward.

Award winner grew up with music

D

uring the past 25 years, 33 of our community’s most talented musicians have been honoured at an event held in Stouffville United Church.

Staged under the banner of ‘Music Town, Ontario’, the 2016 concert is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. A freewill offering will be received in addition to donations to the Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Bank.

The evening will feature The Men of Note male voice choir, violinist Matthew Eeuwes and vocal soloists Susan Ryman and Vince Parry.

A program highlight is the presentation of this year’s music award to someone whose abilities span all areas of the melodious arts, both vocal and instrumental.

The committee’s choice is Courtney Britton, organist, pianist, vocalist and choir director at Stouffville United Church. A plaque, celebrating her accomplishments will read: “For contributing to our community’s musical heritage, June 29, 2016.” The presentation will be made

by Eeuwes, last year’s award recipient.

Courtney’s growing up years were spent on a farm at Park Hill, Ont., midway between London and Grand Bend, where her parents, Edward and Linda Fox still reside. She has two sisters, Diana in Arizona and Jacqui at Park Hill.

Following graduation from Northern Middlesex Secondary School, Courtney attended the University of Windsor where she received her honours bachelor of music education degree. In 2006, she obtained an education degree from the University of Toronto.

Courtney and husband Jason moved to Stouffville from Markham in 2009 where they reside with two

Roaming Around with Jim Thomas beautiful daughters, Daphne, three; Lucy, 11 months and a black Labrador dog Roxanne. Courtney is a teacher at Joseph Gould Public School in Uxbridge.

For the 34-year-old, music has long been a prime part of her life beginning with piano lesson at age six and continuing through Grade 8. Later, she added her mezzo soprano voice to a choir at Beechwood Presbyterian Church, then graduated to a 50-member mixed chamber choir known as Amabile in London. This choral group traveled world-wide including a concert in New York’s Carnegie Hall and several tour trips to Europe.

Courtney comes by her musical skills honestly. Her grandmother played piano, her father, the clarinet and her mother sang in a church choir. Together, they once formed the Fox family band.

Locally, she assisted as an accompanist at several Music Mania shows and later with The Bach to Blues Company.

Currently she has a similar role with the Men of Note male voice choir. At Stouffville United Church she’s the organist, pianist, soloist and music director “How do you have time?”

Courtney was asked.

“I make time,” she replied. “My husband is

extremely helpful looking after the girls. We support each other.”

Despite her many responsibilities, Courtney enjoys a close association with the Ballantrae Tennis Club. She and Jason have also enjoyed two memorable trips to Jamaica and The Maritimes. They hope to celebrate their upcoming wedding anniversary with a holiday in Mexico.

Her impression of Whitchurch-Stouffville?

“We love it here,” she says. “Although three hours distant from my parents, this is where we’re supposed to be.”

Dreams for their daughters?

“We eventually hope to involve them in the arts,” Courtney says, “in one form or another.”

As for receiving the Music Town, Ontario award June 29, Courtney describes the honour in one word – “unexpected”.

When it comes to altering habits around impaired driving, communication is key.

After all, it was the drunk driving campaigns of the 1990s and early 2000s that saw the numbers of those caught impaired behind the wheel plummet.

But in the last few years, York Region has seen those numbers rise again – by an eye-popping 45 per cent between 2013 and 2015.

That’s what makes the #Imthatperson campaign by the York Regional Police all the more impactful.

Rolled out at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in November 2015, the social media-based effort encouraged young and old to be “that person” to take an impaired individual’s keys, to call a taxi for those who shouldn’t get behind the wheel and to alert 911 when they see an impaired driver on the road.

‘Personally, feeling the tragedy that night and being with the family through the court proceedings and feeling the effects impaired driving has on people’s lives, you begin to wonder what don’t these people get?’

“We were sitting around the table thinking, ‘Why do we do what we do?’” Sgt. Karen Hodge said. “Each of us have our own story (about impaired driving) that brought us here. It’s about being that person who is willing to take that stand, so there will be no regrets, no tragedies at the end of the day.”

The effort on the acclaimed campaign paid off June 16 when the York Regional Police’s traffic bureau was handed the Traffic Initiative of the Year award by the Ministry of Transportation.

“The campaign focused on shifting the mindset that impaired driving is not just the responsibility of law enforcement — that we all play very important roles in creating safer roads,” Sgt. Kelly Bachoo said.

The award is a boon to a force that has struggled over the past year, in particular, with the effects of drunk driving.

Although the number of arrests have been rising since 2013, they’ve ballooned over the past year, despite with the death of four members of the Neville-Lake family in Vaughan. To many officers’ dismay, though, this tragedy that was so heavily covered in the media, has not had the desired impact.

“Personally, feeling the tragedy that night and being with the family through the court proceedings and feeling the effects impaired driving has on people’s lives, you begin to wonder what don’t these people get?” questioned Const. Andy Pattenden. “I don’t think people are putting themselves in that position, they must never think that they will kill a family, be caught

by RIDE or stopped by an officer.”

Const. Pattenden has no idea what it’s going to take to get the message out to everyone, considering increased enforcement by York police only ends up resulting in more and more people being caught.

“Is it increased penalties? Lowering the limit? Zero tolerance?” he questioned.

One thing for sure, from his standpoint, is figures show that 2016, which has seen 674 people nabbed for drinking and driving so far, is shaping up to be one of the worst years for drinking and driving, noting it appears it will surpass the 1,255 people nabbed in 2015.

A home in rural Whitchurch-Stouffville suffered approximately $400,000 in damage in a fire Monday night.

The two-storey home at 5288 Bethesda Rd. E. had flames shooting through the roof of the home, witnesses told The SunTribune. Smoke could be seen for several kilometres from the scene, just east of Hwy 48.

“It looks like it’s done some heavy damage,” said Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire and Emergency Services Chief Rob McKenzie.

“Looks like the house is probably pretty much a write-off.”

The house was under renovation at the time with contractors on-site doing work.

The fire started when a contractor was trying to seal a roof membrane and accidently set fire to the roof.

No injuries were reported. The contractor alerted a nanny who immediately evacuated the house with a baby. The homeowners were not home.

Dog nobody wanted has made thousands ‘smile’

touffville’s got an international celebrity with a contagious smile.

No, it’s not a politician. It’s Smiley the blind therapy dog, who – along with his owner Joanne George – will receive the award for Citizen of the Year from The Sun-Tribune for their phenomenal work in the community.

Smiley’s international fame aside, him and George continue to work, volunteer and help the local community whatever way they can. He volunteers twice a week for St. John’s Ambulance, visiting local schools, nursing homes and hospitals to do what he does best – make people smile.

“I’ve always said he’s such a special dog,” George said. “I realized how he could help people, cheer them up, make them happy, so I wanted to try and share him as much as I could.”

Smiley’s distinguished smile and his relaxed personality resonate greatly with anyone he meets. George regularly receives messages from people saying Smiley helped them through tough times. Sales of his new bobblehead are assisting St. John’s.

He participates in a reading program at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Library – Paws for Stories.

At the program, Smiley encourages children who have trouble reading or are nervous to read aloud to him. While children read, Smiley sits by their side gently responding to their touch and voice.

With more than 101,000 followers on Instagram, 27,000 likes on Facebook, honours from the Governor General of Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, appearances on ... Meredith Vieira and Cesar Millan “The kids dial down, they feel more comfortable, more relaxed, and they’re able to perform much better,” said library CEO Carolyn Nordheimer James. “It’s not

just children who have difficulty reading, it’s children who have difficulty socializing, and it’s the same benefits, less pressure, less stress, more welcoming, it’s wonderful to see them come out of their shell.”

His therapy visits have taken him to several schools, including most recently to Wendat Village Public School, where children with autism between kindergarten and grade 3 got a chance to open up and communicate with Smiley with his comfortable aura by their side.

“These kids were non-verbal,” George said. “Within 20 minutes of being around Smiley, they even started talking to me.”

George says she’s “very humbled” by the award.

“It’s very emotional,” she said. “I love what we do; you don’t expect to get that kind of award or recognition.”

It’s not just Stouffville that’s recognized Smiley and George. With more than 101,000 followers on Instagram, 27,000 likes on Facebook, honours from the Governor General of Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, appearances on talk shows in the United States including Meredith Vieira and Cesar Millan, Smiley’s recognition has crossed all borders, straight into the hearts of thousands.

When asked why Smiley resonates with so many people, George said it’s his inspirational story.

At age 13 now, Smiley and George first met 11 years ago when she was working at a veterinary technician.

“We were called out to a puppy mill, SPCA made a list of 20 dogs that needed care,” George said. “We were called in there to euthanize the dogs but the owner let us take the dogs instead, Smiley was one of them.”

“We found everyone homes, but no one would take Smiley,” she added.

Smiley had scars and gashes on his face and ears because of other dogs at the puppy mill. Many people rejected Smiley on the grounds that he would be too difficult to train due to his blindness, but George and the young golden retriever persevered.

“Dogs can recover, forget about the past and still become something great,” George said.

She added that his story encourages and motivates people to recover, to bounce back and to persevere.

George says children see how Smiley was treated unfairly in his youth at the puppy mill and realize it’s not his fault.

“You don’t need to elaborate, they get it,” she said. “They can make the connection to the kid in the next class that doesn’t deserve to be picked on.”

The anti-bullying message also encourages children to give back to their community, just as Smiley does. George hopes that meeting Smiley changes children’s perspective on how to treat others.

Smiley’s been a therapy dog for seven years. In his down time, like any other dog, he goes to the cottage, swims and plays.

At his home near Musselman’s Lake –

where he has most his walks – Smiley spends his time with Pippi, George’s other dog.

Smiley can find his way around the house and the back yard with his sense of touch and smell. Though his hearing is weaker than it used to be, he still responds to calls and sounds with great enthusiasm. A gentle stroke of his ears and he turns right around to face you, equipped with his signature smile.

Golden retrievers generally live until the age of 14 or 15. George expressed her sorrow of the inevitable, but said she has no regrets.

“We’ve done great things,” she said. “He’s so special; he’s a gift I had to share.”

The citizen of the year award will be presented July 1 at 6 p.m. during the opening ceremonies of the Strawberry Festival at the Memorial Park bandshell.

Across the summer, the town is again hosting movie nights at Memorial Park with six movies scheduled for screenings. It’s part of a series that will offer residents a chance to watch familyfriendly films like Minions, Hotel Transylvanian 2, Inside Out, Zootopia, Star Wars – The Force Awakens and The Jungle Book.

The series – called Movies in the Park – began last Friday with a showing of Minions. If you missed the first movie, the other five will be shown later this summer.

“We had about 200 people out for Minions,” said town manager of culture Joan Crosbie. “The

numbers exceeded our expectations; we hope it’ll set the bar for the entire summer.”

Movie-goers can take advantage of popcorn and beverages for sale on-site as well as music that plays before the start of each movie.

Next up is Hotel Transylvania 2 to be screened on June 24 at 8:30 p.m. The movie features a hotel run by Dracula himself, offering bed and breakfast and other comforts to his monster friends including Frankenstein and the Phantom of the Opera.

It stars Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg and Selena Gomez.

All showtimes are set for 8:30 p.m., the dates are as follows: Inside Out is scheduled for July 15, Zootopia for July 22, Star Wars – The Force Awakens for

Aug. 19, and The Jungle Book for Aug. 26.

“We solidified the showings, previously they were scattered throughout the summer,” Crosbie said. “This time we have it the last two Fridays of June, July and August, makes it easy for people to remember.”

The events staff chose movies they thought were recent and family-friendly.

Town officials suggest residents bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The movie series is presented by Perla Dental and sponsored by the town, IDA, Bank of Montreal, Schell Lumber, Renew Integrative Health, Stouffville Academy of Music and Dance and Care and Share Thrift Shop.

100 Kids Who Care hope to follow women’s lead

There are plenty of people you can help in your own back yard, and a hundred kids will see to it.

Approximately 100 children from Stouffville will donate $10 of their own money to raise $1,000 for a local charity or not-for-profit. It’s part of the Stouffville chapter of the group 100 Kids Who Care, similar to other local group 100 Women Who Care.

Heather Rogers founded Stouffville’s 100 Women Who Care in April 2014 and in two years it’s raised close to $60,000 for Stouffville charities. Rogers soon collaborated with other members and co-founded 100 Kids Who Care this year with three other parents.

“I thought it was an amazing idea,” Rogers said. “We expect a lot of people at this year’s meetings, for 100 kids that’s around 150 to 200 parents.”

To host that many people, the group uses Memorial Park as their meeting place. The first meeting is scheduled for Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. in Memorial Park. The second meeting is on Sept. 25, from 4 to 5 p.m., also in Memorial Park.

While 100 Women Who Care meet four times a year, 100 Kids Who Care will meet twice a year, before and after the school year.

All of the money collected goes to a charity or none-profit of choice decided by a vote.

Rogers’ decision to form 100 Women Who Care was driven by her belief that Stouffville had enough people willing to make local charitable donations.

“I was looking for a way to give back to the community,” she said. “I thought we’ve got to be able to get 100 women together in Stouffville.”

The organization now has 97 women participating regularly. With 100 Kids, she hopes to see more since the donation is smaller.

So far, nine charities have received donations from the women’s organization: the Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Bank, Parkview Home, the Jennifer Ashleigh Children’s Charity, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library, Markham/Stouffville Crisis Pregnancy Centre, Stouffville-Igoma Partnership, Stouffville Cares and Young Life.

Donors in 100 Women receive tax receipts for their donations. As for the kids, they decide who to donate to on the website when they sign up. Kids have the option to choose a charity or a not-for-profit organization.

“I’m always trying to teach my kids about giving back and how important it is to contribute to society,” Rogers said when asked why she set up the organization. She hopes her message resonates with other parents and their children.

Stouffville’s Harry Bowes Public School is home to one of the country’s best teachers.

Larry Papez, who teaches math and science at the school, was nominated for the 2016 Canadian Family Teacher Award. Papez is one of 12 educators across the country shortlisted for the award from a pool of nominations.

“I’m pretty flattered,” he said. “It was unexpected but it’s nice to be nominated.”

Canadian Family is an online parenting magazine run by St. Joseph Media (Toronto Life, FASHION). The annual competition is held to recognize exceptional teachers and give them a chance to win $2,500 for programming and supplies.

Papez was nominated for his “inclusivity in encouraging his students to try new things”, the press release states. Along with another Harry Bowes teacher, Papez runs the school’s Lego robotics team as well.

“The nominations this year were very strong and the selected finalists have each uniquely impacted the lives of those in their classroom and in their communities,” said director of digital lifestyle brands with St.

Results of an online vote held this spring will determine the top three winners from the 12 nominees. In addition to the $2,500 prize money for supplies, this year’s winners will receive a Scholar’s Choice 20-per-cent off gift card and a gift basket from Baskits valued at $250.

Papez works in Stouffville, but lives in Holland Landing. He started teaching in 2008 and got his first permanent position at Harry Bowes in 2013.

Just three years in and he’s already been nominated for an award. But Papez is too busy with teaching to celebrate.

“I haven’t had too much of an opportunity to chat about it,” he said. “It’s been a crazy couple weeks, we have a Grade 8 grad trip and we’re prepping for a few other things, too.”

Winners will be announced on Canadianfamily.ca on Aug. 15.

Special needs washroom will be a first in North America

Stouffville will be home to a first in North America; a mobile washroom trailer for people with special needs.

Town council has endorsed the establishment of a bank account to fundraise for the

purchase of the trailer at the request of resident Diane Ward.

Ward also received council’s approval to house the trailer on town property and make it available for rent to fairs and festival organizers.

Fair’s chair of the office committee, said the idea came to her after a meeting with Sutton District High School’s special education teacher Derek Bunn, who had brought some students with special needs to the Markham Fair.

“Derek pointed out that because there were no change facilities, they (the students) could only stay for a couple hours,” Ward said. “It’s expensive for transportation to bring them down for just an hour or two.”

After pondering over facility options with Bunn, Ward had an epiphany.

“The idea hit me,” she said. “Why not build a trailer that we can share with all kinds of fairs and festivals?”

And so her campaign began. Bunn began looking for companies that could construct such a trailer, receiving quotes – and some rejection.

Ward approached the Regional Municipality of York for help earlier this year, but she became fed up with delays.

She soon started a crowd-funding campaign on GoFundMe, but with low exposure, the funds didn’t suffice.

The total cost of the mobile washroom trailer stands at $100,000.

With one last hope, Ward approached the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

“I spoke to Justin (Mayor Altmann) and (acting CAO) Rob Raycroft,” Ward said. “They were both enthusiastic, they said they’ll do it

Another resident, Wilf Morley, has also come on board since he’s been on many accessibility committees.

Finding a trailer company to build the mobile washroom still proved challenging.

Councillor Iain Lovatt recommended a firm, while leisure and community services director Raycroft sorted details of insurance and towing.

Ward said during the winter, the trailer would be stored after draining the pipes and replacing it with antifreeze.

She told councillors the trailer will be unique to Canada and the United States.

“I’m so grateful they agreed on something for once,” Ward said regarding council’s endorsement.

West Nile virus Spoil a mosquito’s dinner plans

Fight the bite…

What is West Nile virus?

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that is spread to humans from the bite of an infected mosquito.

What are the symptoms of West Nile virus?

Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms or have flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. Sometimes West Nile virus can cause severe illness including meningitis and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

Symptoms usually develop within two to 15 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Who is at risk for West Nile virus?

Everyone who is outside during the summer months is at risk for West Nile virus and should take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. People with a chronic illness and the elderly should be especially careful.

What York Region is doing…

The York Region West Nile virus Control Plan for 2016 includes mosquito-control activities (larviciding), public education, and mosquito and human surveillance.

What is larviciding?

Larviciding is a low-risk and effective measure for the control of West Nile virus. The slow-release pellet formulation interferes with the mosquito lifecycle, preventing the mosquito larvae from reaching maturity. Larvicide is not sprayed and will be applied into the standing water of catch basins in four phases from June through September.

Will York Region apply larvicide on private property?

If you are concerned about catch basins on your property, place a mesh screen over the catch basin to prevent mosquitoes from entering and exiting. A limited number of backyard catch basins located on private property will be treated with larvicide on a case-by-case basis.

What you can do…

Prevention and protection are the best ways to protect yourself and your family from West Nile virus.

Clean up

The best way to keep mosquitoes away is to clean up areas of standing water where they like to breed. Look around your house and property and get rid of places that are “mosquito friendly”.

• Clean up and empty containers where water collects such as old tires, tin cans and flower pots • Change water in bird baths weekly • Remove water that collects on pool covers • Turn over items such as wading pools, wheelbarrows and small boats • Clear leaves and twigs from eavestroughs, storm and roof gutters • Unclog drainage ditches so that water flows freely • Make sure swimming pool pumps are circulating water • Clear out dense shrubbery where mosquitoes like to rest • Turn over compost frequently • Check that door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair • Drill holes in the bottoms of containers so water cannot collect

Cover up

Mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn. Protect yourself and your family • Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants • Consider using federally-registered insect repellents on exposed skin, such as those containing DEET • Always follow product instructions • The concentration of DEET should be no greater than 30 per cent for adults and no greater than 10 per cent for children • DEET-based repellents can also be used on top of clothing. Do not use repellents under clothing • Several DEET-free botanical repellents are federally registered but provide a shorter time of effectiveness

York Region Public Health does not recommend the use of bat boxes as an effective method of mosquito control due to the risk of rabies. In previous summers, some bats in York Region have tested positive for rabies.

Stouffville’s Jim Gillies, 69, will walk a “sixminute marathon” on Saturday to raise awareness for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) – a disease he’s had for the last three years.

“IPF has been known for quite a while as an orphan disease, meaning few Canadians have it,” Gillies said. “So big pharma just hasn’t got to it yet, but statistics show that the death rate from IPF is the same as cervical cancer in women.”

“I believe, and my doctor believes, there needs to be awareness of the disease, that’s basically what I’m trying to do,” he added.

Pulmonary fibrosis affects an estimated 30,000 Canadians and is responsible for 5,000 deaths each year.

Pulmonologists commonly use a six-minute walking test to assess the prevalence of IPF

and monitor the progression of the disease.

“They get you to walk as fast as you can, up and down a hallway in the hospital, with some electronic gear attached to you so they can read things like oxygen levels and lung capacity,” Gillies said.

“It’s a standard test that baselines every patient, that’s why the six-minute walk became part of a marathon.”

To some people with severe IPF, a six-minute walk is exceedingly difficult to do.

This month, Canadians with IPF from coast to coast are participating in various “sixminute marathons” to put IPF in the spotlight and to show they can still live an active life with the rare but fatal lung disease.

The disease causes irreversible scarring of the lungs which worsens over time. The scarred lungs make it difficult to receive an See DISEASE, page 41.

Survey says owning home more important than finding mate likely’ to buy a home in the next two years say that the number-one task they are doing is scouring the internet to look at listings of homes for sale (57 per cent). In addition: • One in three have begun to visit open houses.

In a recent survey conducted by Ipsos Reid, the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) asked prospective home buyers in Ontario about the importance of some life-altering decisions. The results revealed that owning a home is as important as saving for retirement (90 per cent), but more important than getting higher education (72 per cent), finding a mate (64 per cent) or having children (63 per cent).

Bill Robins dispensed humbleness, humour behind pharmacy counter

ometimes someone is so humble he doesn’t truly realize the legacy he has left within a community.

For decades, Bill Robins cared for much of Newmarket. He was the longtime pharmacist and owner of Main Street’s Robins Pharmacy, who was born in Perth, ON and moved to Newmarket because, after visiting communities throughout southern Ontario, he “thought it was the best place to raise a family”, says his daughter, Anne.

Bill died unexpectedly May 27.

He was 90.

“He never lost that small town, personal service,” Anne, who took over the operation of the pharmacy more than 25 years ago, said while sitting in a café during a lunchbreak in downtown Newmarket recently.

“He had a great sense of humour and he really was calming. He taught us to treat people fairly. He had resilience; you have to, to make it to 90.”

Anne choked up and a tear rolled down

her cheek and she reached for a napkin to wipe it away.

Bill accelerated through school and graduated early from the University of Toronto in 1949, but never liked to talk about his age.

“He started school a year early and they accelerated him; he was really young,” Anne said.

“It was actually very embarrassing for him.”

He then split his time working for pharmacies and being a sales representative for a drug company. He met his wife, Joan, while playing tennis in Toronto. They married and lived in the city for a few years, but Bill claimed he was a small town boy and asked Joan to move to Newmarket.

He purchased the well-known Harvey Lane’s Pharmacy in 1957.

“He travelled all throughout the area and he just loved downtown Newmarket; he liked the doctors in town,” Anne said.

“He said it was the best decision he ever made.”

active member of the downtown BIA. Many local residents also credit Bill with giving them their first job. But he never believed he had an important place in Newmarket history, Anne said.

Anne wants to carry on the legacy of her father. She operates what may be the oldest continually running pharmacy in York Region. There are antique pill and medicine bottles and jars resting on shelves overtop the pharmacy area of the store.

While history and the preservation of Main became important to Bill, he was more than happy to adapt as times changed within his industry. He saw the potential of computers and used them in his store before many other pharmacies did.

“He always kept up-to-date,” she said.

“Our profession changed. Some stores still weren’t computerized, but he was 10 years before them. He really enjoyed his profession. He worked for 50 years.”

His wife, Joan, died four years ago. He had three children and four grandchildren.

Bill Robins loved his community and was a self-proclaimed small-town man. He ran Main Street’s Robins’ Pharmacy for decades before turning it over to his daughter, Anne.,

Wise retires with national coaching record

When Graham Wise is not coaching hockey he likes to restore old furniture and do a little fishing at his cottage in Muskoka.

But for the last 29 seasons, the 64-year-old Stouffville resident could not put as much time in doing those favourite pastimes as much as he wanted to after serving as head men’s coach at York and then Ryerson University.

This upcoming season though, Wise will have a little more free time on his hands after he announced his retirement from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport coaching wars with the Ryerson Rams effective Sept. 1, the Toronto school announced last Thursday.

“Now I will have an opportunity to take care of a lot of things that I’ve had on the back burner for a number of years at the cottage and house,” Wise said.

In announcing his retirement, Wise revealed the thought pondered his mind earlier this past season, his tenth at Ryerson.

“You think of it when you’re coming up on 65 (years of age),” he said. “I’ve been doing (coaching) a long time and I was thinking it over.”

Wise was also quick to point out the decision to retire was on his own terms.

And if he wanted just to take a temporary sabbatical, Ryerson University would welcome him back.

“Ryerson was good about the whole thing.

Ivan (Joseph, athletic director) said if I want to come back I can,” said Wise. “The decision

was totally up to me. I was lucky to have that flexibility.”

During his 29 seasons as head coach at Ryerson and York, Wise compiled a record of 407-387-55.

He is also the longest serving men’s hockey coach in CIS history.

As for what he will miss foremost, Wise said it will be the interaction with the studentathletes between the ages of 19 to 25 and in assisting them on the ice and in the classroom.

“I’ve coached a lot of great kids,” he said.

“You bring them in fresh out of junior hockey where they’ve been hockey oriented and you try to get them to balance athletics and academics and hopefully they will be successful at both.”

‘Success is different in any person.

But it’s great to see a player you’ve coached maybe 10, 15 or 20 years ago and there’s a common bond.’

The highlights weren’t all on the ice.

“When you see kids graduate and become successful, whether it’s in hockey or another business altogether you see success,” he said.

Joseph had a net full of praise. ”Graham has devoted over 35 years of his life to the sport of hockey and the mentorship of others. He has been a great contributor to our department and will be missed by the university and his colleagues,” he said in a school news release.

Wise hasn’t ruled out a comeback.

“The beauty of the game of hockey is that you can retire Sept. 1, step away from the game and if you miss it, the batteries are recharged and you can always step back in at any level,” he said.

“It’s a great game. It allows you to do it.”

Rugby/hockey stars high school’s top athletes

So what does it take to be an athlete of the year or garner a major athletics award at Stouffville District Secondary School?

Jamie Hewitt said the studentathlete must have the total package.

It’s not just possessing the athletic ability on the field of play, said the school’s physical education head.

Just as important is how they perform in the classroom.

In selecting this year’s senior and junior male and female athletes of the year along with recipients of other major school awards, Hewitt said some tough decisions were made as to who were most deserving.

“In some years, some studentathletes jump out at you and sometimes it’s a close decision,” he said.

“This year though, it was a bit of both. There were some tough decisions in some instances because you’re dealing with the best of the best.”

In unveiling this academic year’s recipients, which were conducted during the school’s athletic banquet

last Thursday, Danny Shields was chosen as the senior male athlete of the year.

A Grade 12 student, Shields served as captain of the Spartans’ boys’ seven’s and 15s rugby squads.

In between fall and spring rugby, he also played with the Spartans’ varsity ice hockey team.

Along with garnering that honour, Shields was a recipient of the Jim Rehill Award for sportsmanship.

Named as the top senior female athlete of the year was Anna Horner.

Along with that honour, Horner was named the MVP in girls’ rugby and ice hockey and was the recipient of the Morale and Physical Improvement Award.

Hewitt was quick to note Horner’s selection as the senior female athlete of the year was a unanimous selection by the teachers who voted.

“There were a lot of good nominees, but Anna was unanimous.

She’s an excellent athlete,” he said.

In the junior male and female categories, Sam Atanakovich was given the top male honour.

The Grade 10 student played seven’s and 15s rugby and was a member of the boys’ varsity ice hockey team.

The junior female selection proved to be a bit more difficult as two recipients were awarded this year.

Those included Alexa Feasby, a Grade 9 student, and Denise Laghayi, a Grade 10 student.

Feasby was a member of the Spartans seven’s and 15s rugby teams and played with the girls’ ice hockey team.

A black belt in taekwondo, Laghayi played with the junior girls’ volleyball team.

Other Jim Rehill Award recipients included Vanessa Mangos as the female selection.

For Moral and Physical Improvement, David Dragoti was the male nominee.

Named as the Sue Leroy Spartan Spirit Award winner, presented to the athlete who displayed the attributes of the former Spartans teacher and coach of 25 years, was Alycia Holt, a Grade 12 student

Stouffville’s Team Three Red/EHR encountered bad luck when it took to the track in the NASCAR Pinty’s Leland 300 race at Sunset Speedway near Innisfil Saturday.

With Jason Hathaway behind the steering wheel of the Fast Eddie/Choko/HGC Raybestos Chevrolet, the team could not avoid a two-car collision and experienced front end damage to their vehicle that ultimately put them in 17th place when the race concluded.

Beginning the 300-lap event in the 12th position, Hathaway forged his was up to ninth

in the running order and the car was working well through 11 laps.

After the damage, Hathaway returned to the track just past the half way point, determined to collect as many points as possible in the second race of the 2016 NASCAR Pinty’s Series schedule before finishing in 17th spot.

Alex Tagliani took the checkered flag.

In the overall series standings, Hathaway sits in seventh place with 64 points. Andrew Ranger is the overall leader with 83 points.

The next race is scheduled to take place at Autodrome Chaudière, near Quebec City for the Chaudière 300 this Friday.
