‘Personal Cloud’ Tipped to Dominate Computer Use The era of the personal computer is being replaced by that of the personal cloud, according to executive vice president of Alcatel-Lucent Michel Emelianoff. Arguing that the tablet is leading the change, he told PC World the devices have brought about a "global transformation" and ended a world in which some companies relied on PCs as the only source of access to corporate data.
"The tablet heralds a future where the terminal is nothing more than the access point to individual and personal content. The content will be stored in a "space," available from anywhere, any device, anytime," Mr Emilianoff added. He emphasised that this did not mean PCs were set to vanish, stating that they would have a role – but one shared with many other devices. Companies who adjust to the future needs of their staff will "continue to invest in fulfilling the needs of a more and more mobile and collaborative workforce and IT departments will have to redefine their role and adapt their mandate and mission", the expert added.
Such a projection of the future may provide considerable food for thought, not least for those unsure about how they might seek to develop their communications and data usage in a world of rapid change and new developments. Particular reasons for using the cloud more may include the ability to work remotely and the increased access it provides for staff to data, which may be particularly useful for those who may need urgent access to it outside standard office hours.
Other benefits could include the ability to access information despite damage to hardware – as it will be stored beyond the limits on one hard drive – or in situations where flood or fire threatens to damage the office's own equipment or at least prevent staff getting there. The latest forecast by IT industry analysts IDC predicts the level of spending on cloud computing by company IT departments will soar from $47.4 billion (£30 billion) this year to over $107 billion in 2017.
