ANDY RONAN ANDY RONAN HEAD COACH PROVIDENCE, ‘86 10TH SEASON Since joining Stony Brook University in 2000, Andy Ronan’s cross country and track and field teams have become two of the most successful programs in Seawolves’ history. Not only are his teams competitive within the America East Conference, but they are also starting to make a name for themselves nationally, making NCAA Championship appearances in both cross country and track in 2008-09. Under Ronan’s guidance, the Seawolves cross country teams have experienced incredible success. His runners have earned an All-America honor, 12 All-Northeast Region honors and 27 All-America East honors. His teams also have a long list of championships: Four America East individual championships, three METS individual championships, one ECAC individual championship and one America East team championship. His women’s teams have ranked third or better in the conference every year since 2002 and the men have three top-three finishes since 2004. Ronan has also done a remarkable job with the track and field teams. The Seawolves have posted 15 NCAA Regional qualifying times under his guidance, including an all-time high eight in 2007-2008. Four times the Seawolves have had an individual qualify for the NCAA Championships. In America East competition, Ronan has led the Seawolves to 20 individual championships since 2002, and has also seen 44 different school records fall during his tenure. Ronan has picked up some hardware of his own during his career, being named the America East Coach of the Year three years in a row (2005-2007). Academically, Ronan’s teams are always near the top. Three of his athletes have won the SUNY Chancellor Award, ten of them have been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Individual Team while three of his teams have been awarded the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award. He also coached the 2007-2008 runner-up for the America East Woman of the Year Award. Prior to joining the Stony Brook staff, Ronan spent six years at Providence College as the associate head coach for the men’s cross country and track and field programs, while taking on assistant coach duties for the women’s programs. Known for his expertise in middle and long distance running events, Ronan assisted the Friars’ programs in winning six Big East cross country titles. The men’s team won back-to-back conference championships in 1995 and 1996 and captured another title in 1998, while the women’s program won three straight Big East rings from 1995-1997. The 1995 women’s cross country

team garnered the Division I national championship. During the 1999-2000 season, the Providence women’s program won the NCAA regional, defeating 34 teams at the meet, and secured a 10th place finish in its 11th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. The men’s team finished second regionally and finished in 19th place in its fifth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. While at Providence College, Ronan was associated with the development of two NCAA individual champions, two Olympians, 37 All-Americans and six Big East champions. Before his time with Providence, Ronan spent 1994 as the assistant coach of the men’s and women’s track and field program at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and served as head coach of the men’s cross country/track and field team at Our Lady of Providence High School from 1986-1988. A 1986 graduate of Providence, Ronan was an outstanding cross country and track and field athlete. He was among the many All-Americans in Friars’ history, receiving the honor in 1983 and 1985. A native of Wexford, Ireland, Ronan won four Big East titles, capturing the 5,000-meter indoor title twice and the 10,000-meter outdoor championship twice. Ronan competed at a world-class level after graduation, finishing third at the 1991 Boston Marathon (2:11.27) and fourth at the 1989 Twin Cities Marathon (2:13.49). He also represented his native Ireland in the marathon at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and competed in the World Cross Country Championships in 1982 and 1989.

SEASON PREVIEW

When a new season of competition begins, everything from jitters and excitement to fulfilment and content is apparent. But the Stony Brook University cross country team could be dealing with something it hasn’t had to deal with in previous years: Injuries and sickness “Our approach to this season will be different,” head coach Andy Ronan said. “Our preseason has not gone as well as planned. Some of the team injuries and sickness have put us behind the mark. That being said, some will be starting in September but should be ready for the championship part of the season,” Ronan said. A pair of seniors, Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) and Alex Felce (Stroud, England) could have an interesting battle, once again, for one and two in the conference, according to TIM HODGE Ronan. Hodge won last year’s America East title with a time of 25:29.3 and narrowly missed out on a berth in the NCAA Championships, finishing just a second behind the 15th and final qualifier. Felce finished second at the conference championships, coming in at 25:31.6. “The potential for a repeat at this year’s America East Championships is certainly there,” Ronan said. “I certainly expect them to compete for a top-15 finish ALEX FELCE in the region as well.”

Another senior, Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland)

is a key returner who Ronan has high hopes for this season. Bermingham finished 12th at the conference championships and ran in all six meets last year. “Daire has the potential to finish in the top-10 in the conference this season,” Ronan said. “He is a real key for our team to do well.” Sophomore Gerard Harley (Setauket, N.Y.) had a good cross country season as a freshman and Ronan is looking for a better one in his second campaign. “Gerard came in and performed well as a freshman. He had a good summer and should be prepared to take that next step,” Ronan said. Anchoring the team could be sophomore Brett Crandell (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior Kurt Wende (Williamsville, N.Y.). Crandell competed in three races last year, running a 16:02 in the Central Connecticut Mini Meet. Wende ran in all six meets for the Seawolves last year, and provides Stony Brook with some experience. Rounding out the squad are sophomore Mark Appledorf (Hauppauge, N.Y.), sophomore Drew Dillingham, junior Alexander Felicier (Bronx, N.Y.), Shamell Forbes (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.), freshman David Golub (Commack, N.Y.), senior Brandon Leung (Rego Park, N.Y.), freshman Michael Lopizzo (Northport, N.Y.), senior Chris Morfesi (West Babylon, N.Y.), freshman Sean O’Shaughnessy (Staten Island, N.Y.), senior Scott Ulberg (Bellmore, N.Y.), junior Alex Varone (Providence, R.I.), freshman Robert Vietri (Bay Shore, N.Y. and senior Iain Whitfield (Stroud, England).

SEASON PREVIEW

The junior class of the Stony Brook women’s cross country team has won back-to-back America East Championships and competed in the NCAA Championships twice, so it should be no surprise that head coach Andy Ronan is expecting big things from his squad. “Each year has its own pressure and new challenges, but if we stay healthy, I HOLLY VAN DALEN don’t see any reason why we can’t challenge for another conference title and a top-2 finish in the region,” Ronan said. Juniors and twin sisters Holly and Lucy Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) both finished in the top-15 in the region en route to a berth in the NCAA Championships. “Holly and Lucy carried out team in many meets last year,” Ronan said. “I think they could finish in the top-5 in the region and in the top-40 nationally.” Holly and Lucy finished second and third, respectively, at the Seawolves Invitational and continued LUCY VAN DALEN their strong showing at the America East Championships, taking second and fifth. With challenges from Boston University and New Hampshire, Ronan will look to junior Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) in the fifth spot. “Carolina carried our team in numerous meets last season and should improve on her times this season,” Ronan said. Joining Cortes to help Lucy and Holly is senior Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland). One of two seniors on the squad, Huet finished in the top-5 in two events last season, including third at the America East Championships. “For us to be successful we’re

going to need her to be as consistent as possible. I think a top-4 finish in the conference and top-15 in the region is a realistic goal for her,” Ronan said. When the team assembles for training, Ronan can count on quality depth from the women’s squad this season. Providing some of that depth will be sophomore Hayley Green (Wellington, New Zealand). LAURA HUET Green was impressive in her first year at Stony Brook, finishing third overall and first among her teammates at the Iona Meet of Champions. Green also did well towards the end of the season, taking sixth at the America East Championships and 19th at the NCAA Regional Championships. Junior Ruth Gillespie (Carrickfergus, Ireland) and senior Lisa Voltaire (Stockholm, Sweden) as well as sophomore Patricia Barry (Tipperary, Ireland) and freshman Lorraine McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) could be counted on this season. CAROLINA CORTES Also making up the team are Kristal Conklin (Middletown, N.Y.), Kristina Doyle (Lockport, N.Y.), Jillian Fauser (Northport, N.Y.), Katie Ferry (Hampton, N.J.), Mary O’Connor (Waterford, Ireland) and Leanne Skrabacz (West Seneca, N.Y.).

2008 SEASON IN REVIEW 2008 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON IN REVIEW Stony Brook’s women’s team opened the 2008 season not only ranked No. 1 in the America East, but

ranked third in the Northeast Region and 26th nationally. Only two weeks into the season, the Seawolves

jumped two spots in the regional poll, claiming the No. 1 ranking, a position they would hold for the rest of the year. Stony Brook also climbed the national poll, reaching as high as 12th in the country. The men’s team,

which began the season ranked No. 10 in the region, maintained a top-15 ranking throughout the majority of their season.

After a challenging regular-season schedule in which the Seawolves raced all over the country from Indiana

to Connecticut, Stony Brook set its sights on the America East Championships. Picked to finish first in the

preseason poll, the women’s team did not disappoint, as it claimed its second-straight conference title. The women’s team placed three runners in the top-five and four on the America East All-Conference team.

“It was great to defend our title,” head coach Andy Ronan said. “Obviously, there is much more pressure

on a team when they are trying to defend and what we did was a fantastic team effort.”

While the men’s team was unable to overcome New Hampshire for the team title, Tim Hodge did take home

the individual championship. With defending champ and teammate Alex Felce hot on his heels, Hodge be-

came the second consecutive Seawolf to take home the trophy.

Stony Brook then moved onto the NCAA Regional where they placed four runners on the All-Northeast

Region team. The women’s team finished fourth overall and received an at-large bid into the NCAA National Championships. Hodge once again led the men’s team, placing 16th overall out of 239.

Making their second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, the Stony Brook women’s cross country

team finished in 30th place, one spot higher the previous year. Lucy and Holly Van Dalen paced the Seawolves, finishing 91st and 103rd, respectively.

“We improved this year and we are still building towards a bright future and our goal of becoming a consis-

tent top-25 team,” Ronan said.

JIM FIORE Jim

FIORE

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS 7TH YEAR B.A. - Hofstra University M.A. - Springfield College

On July 23, 2003, President Shirley Strum Kenny introduced Jim Fiore as the ninth Director of Athletics in Stony Brook University history, stating “Jim has the energy, drive, enthusiasm and intelligence to take this program, in the tradition of Stony Brook, very far, very fast.” At the time of his hire Fiore was one of the youngest Directors of Athletics in NCAA Division I. Since his arrival at Stony Brook from Princeton University in August 2003, Fiore has pointed Stony Brook on an aggressive course for success in all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. He has undertaken a major restructuring of the intercollegiate athletics program, including the hiring of new coaching and administrative staff, dramatic facility upgrades and improved revenue generation. Fiore’s vision for Stony Brook athletics has resulted in unprecedented growth for the program. After its championship season in 2005, the football program was elevated to the NCAA I-AA scholarship level, and in April 2006, Fiore announced that the program would upgrade to Independent status for the 2007 season and accepted an invitation into the Big South Conference as an associate member for football only. In doing so, he has ensured the long-term future of Stony Brook football, enabling it to eventually compete for a national championship alongside institutions with similar academic and athletic standards. In addition, his dynamic imaging and branding campaign has given Stony Brook athletics a national scope. During the 2005-2006 academic year, Stony Brook inked a television deal with Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network to broadcast a multi-game package during the 2006-2007 academic year, the first television deal in the program’s history. In January 2006, the department also launched The Stony Brook Sports Report, a 30-week television show that is produced on campus and aired nationally on CSTV. Fiore also spearheaded the bid that resulted in Stony Brook being awarded the opportunity to host the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse north quarterfinals in May 2006. Fiore’s grand design has produced dramatic results and a series of firsts for Stony Brook. In 2004, the baseball team won its first America East title and went to the NCAA Tournament. In the fall of 2005, the football program secured its first-ever conference title in its Division I history. On the same day that the football team won a championship, the men’s soccer team capped its regular-season title by capturing its first America East Tournament crown to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The men’s soccer team went on to notch Stony Brook’s first NCAA playoff victory with a first-round win over Yale. Success continued during the winter months as the women’s basketball team put together the second-best turnaround in Division I, going from 8-20 in 2004-2005 to a 20-10 mark in 2005-2006. Along the way, the team defeated nationally-ranked Temple en route to receiving the program’s first postseason bid, a trip to the 2006 WNIT. In the spring of 2005, the men’s lacrosse team garnered its first-ever Top 20 ranking in the 16-year history of the program and is now regularly ranked in the top-20. Under Fiore’s leadership, Stony Brook won its first Division I conference championships in women’s sports in 2007 as the women’s lacrosse, cross country and volleyball teams all won titles. Fiore also has turned his attention to department-wide fundraising efforts, with his efforts resulting in an increase of more than 55 percent in both annual giving revenue and number of donors. In an effort to take a lead role in the university’s $300 million capital campaign, the Department of Athletics has secured several major gifts, two of which were the largest philanthropic gifts given to athletics in its history. In July 2005, Fiore hired a Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Services & Advancement and adopted a new philosophy for the annual Providing Athletes With Support (P.A.W.S.) fundraising campaign, a philosophy that streamlined the annual fundraising process to prepare Stony Brook to exceed all fundraising expectations in the future. In addition, he created the Athletic Director Advisory Council, a 19-member board comprised of Stony Brook alumni, staff and community members that will advise Fiore in the fundraising advancement process. His attention to the bottom line resulted in a new athletic department budget process that relieved the department of an annual systemic deficit, resulting in a balanced budget for the 2004-2005 academic year, the first time that Stony Brook realized that goal since moving to the Division I level. Fiore has seen the department balance its budget every year since and has overseen a budget growth from $9 million to $14 million. Beginning in the ‘04-’05 academic year, Stony Brook University athletics realized a near 20 percent increase in its operating budget due to new revenue streams for the department. Additionally, Stony Brook has teamed with Islanders Media Inc. as the athletic department continues to nurture and foster strong bonds with the Long Island corporate community. Fiore has secured $30 million from New York State for athletic facility renovations to the Stony Brook University Basketball Arena, Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium and various other athletic facilities. In December 2003, Stony Brook retained HOK, the premier

sports architectural firm in the nation, to formulate and develop a master plan for the future of Stony Brook athletic facilities. The blueprint already has begun to take hold: The baseball/softball complex received a facelift with the addition of new bleachers and press boxes, the strength and conditioning facility was renovated and expanded and the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium is going to have a $6 million expansion that will include increasing seating by 2,000 and new Club and V.I.P. seating. Additionally a $20 million renovation of the Stony Brook University Basketball Arena will commence in Spring 2008 as well as a $1.2 million renovation to the Pritchard Gymnasium complex. The football, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and visiting team locker rooms in LaValle Stadium recently were redesigned and enhanced for $1,000,000. Under Fiore’s leadership, Stony Brook student-athletes also have attained new levels of achievement in the classroom. Since his arrival the GPA for student-athletes has risen from 2.86 in 2003 to 3.11 in the fall of 2007. The ‘07-’08 academic year proved to be Stony Brook’s most successful season academically as its student-athletes compiled a department best overall G.P.A. of 3.06 and saw 339 student-athletes named to the America East honor roll - the most since the university joined the America East in 2001. In the fall of 2007, 15 of 20 teams earned team GPAs above 3.0 and 71 percent of Stony Brook’s student-athletes were named to the America East Honor Roll or the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for earning above a 3.0 or 3.5 GPA, respectively. Coinciding with this success, Stony Brook unveiled the new Goldstein Student-Athlete Development Center in the spring of 2006, a center made possible through a $1.2 million gift from Stony Brook alum and former All-American squash player Stuart Goldstein ‘74. The 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility can accommodate more than 400 student-athletes and features a computer lab, a study hall/multipurpose function room, a career resource/library area and several private tutor rooms. During his tenure, Fiore also has guided Stony Brook through the essential and formative NCAA Certification process, helped redesign the athletic logo and athletic website, developed a new comprehensive student-athlete exit survey and head coach performance evaluation instrument, implemented mandatory drug testing, and unveiled an athletic department strategic plan through 2011. Fiore also has instituted a “Book of the Year” program for coaches and staff that highlights important topics relevant to professional and personal development, culminating with the author’s visit to campus and discussion with the entire staff. In the fall of 2004, Fiore implemented a Minority Apprentice program to assist in the development of young professionals in intercollegiate athletics. His list of accomplishments has not gone unnoticed. In December 2007 Fiore was named the Sports Man of the Year by The Village Times Herald and in the fall of 2004, he was recognized by the Long Island Business Association as one of the Top 40 executives under the age of 40 on Long Island. Fiore currently serves on University President Shirley Strum Kenny’s Cabinet and also was appointed by Kenny to co-chair the strategic plan for image and identity committee. He also has served on the honorary degree, weekend life, NCAA certification and the university sponsorship committees. In 2005 he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the America East Conference and currently serves as the Chairman of the group. Fiore also is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet and the NCAA Division I Misconduct Appeals Sub-committee. Recently, he was named to the Dowling College Sports Management Board of Directors. In June 2004, Fiore was a featured speaker at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention in Dallas, Texas. From 1999-2003, he provided department-wide leadership in support of the director of athletics at Princeton University, a program that supports 38 sports, 40 club sports programs and more than 1,000 student-athletes. A member of the senior management team, he was responsible for all athletic programming oversight of all varsity intercollegiate programs. In addition, Fiore directed all personnel matters, including the coordination of national searches for coaches, staff and administrative positions. Along with the director of athletics, he assisted in the planning for short and long-term capital improvements. During Fiore’s tenure, Princeton achieved extraordinary success on the fields of play and in the classroom. Princeton finished among the Top 25 in the Director’s Cup standings in three of the four years he was there and is the only non-scholarship institution ever to finish in the Top 25. From 1999-2003, Princeton teams won 60 Ivy League championships and nine national championships. From 1995-1998, Fiore was the Assistant Director of Athletics for Intercollegiate Programming at Dartmouth College, where he assisted with the daily operation and supervision of Dartmouth’s comprehensive 34-sport program. Before Dartmouth, Fiore interned at Princeton (1994-1995) for one year, during which he assisted the director of athletics on assigned projects. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Springfield College before moving on to be an assistant to the Executive Director of the National Invitation Tournament during the spring and summer of 1993. One year later, he took an internship in the compliance office at Fordham University. A native of Long Beach, N.Y, Fiore graduated from Long Beach High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hofstra University, where he played free safety for the football team. Upon graduation from Hofstra, Fiore earned a master’s degree in education from Springfield College. Additionally, he received a certificate from The Sports Management Institute held at the University of Notre Dame and University of South Carolina. Fiore and his wife, Lisa, have a son, Michael, who is 7 years old. They reside in Stony Brook.
