We’ve just opened a fabulous new show home at The Willows development in Harrogate - and only a week later we transformed it into a very elegant Christmas show home!

We‘ve got lots of Christmas ideas and advice from local businesses from what drinks to have with your Christmas lunch, to what to wear on the big day. We catch up with William & Victoria, and if you’re stuggling for gift ideas, we’ve got a few of those too!

There’s also an update on what we’re doing to help local communities. So put the kettle on (or pour a glass of fizz - it is nearly Christmas after all) and settle down for a thoroughly festive read. ENJOY!

Christmas flowers a must for the festive season

Jo Banks runs Harrogate’s Garden School, and after many years working as a health visitor she now works part-time as a practice nurse. In between the nursing she studied horticulture and garden design and, for a few years, ran a garden design and maintenance company. In the last couple of weeks, Jo has created and supplied beautiful flowers and garlands for our show home at The Willows.

Jo’s passion for all things horticulture and garden related began when she was just three years old! “I would love to help my parents in their beautiful garden. A few years later I was given my own plot…a small patch of ground where I could create whatever I liked. This was the start of a lifelong

love of growing from seed and being creative with colour. During my teenage years I would work in the garden as relaxation away from the stresses of exams and study. My friends could not believe that I found such joy in weeding!” And this passion has carried right through into Jo’s adult life, culminating in the establishment of The Garden School. Here, she hopes to fire your passion for your garden. All that is required is a desire to learn and have fun along the way. With some knowledge and understanding we can all have a go with a degree of confidence and take great pleasure from the sense of achievement that comes from growing a lovely garden.

Get ready for the main event

None of us know how Christmas lunch will really look this year, but even if you’re celebrating via Zoom, you can still pull out all of the stops and get ready with a fabulous looking table.

As with Christmas decorations this year, rich jewel colours offer the perfect backdrop for your dining table. These shades epitomise Christmas with rich purples, reds, golds and spice colours including cinnamon and star anise, married with simple white dinnerware.

Foliage and fresh flowers always bring something to the party. Add a runner of greenery to your table décor for instant impact. With

so many floral colours available, you can easily find something that co-ordinates, accents or compliments your surroundings. Hydrangeas have large heads and will give a bold centrepiece and whilst they might not be often associated with Christmas, they work beautifully.

Place settings make your guests feel welcome and they needn’t be expensive. Snip some bits off your tree (if it’s a real one!) and add a tea light and a small bauble and you’ve got a bespoke place setting. If you’re more of a relaxed Scandi style person, opt for cool wintery colours and glassware. Greenery

is important here – eucalyptus and berries - mixed with linen and textures and tableware in grey and white. Glass jars filled with treats and star shaped decorations will ensure your table represents the best in northern design.

If you’re a fan of nice glasses try champagne saucers instead of the traditional flute - Christmas cocktails and Champagne taste so much better in a nice glass. If you want to inject some colour, cranberry coloured glasses, and fabulous jewel coloured digestifs displayed in a decadent decanter will bring warmth to your Christmas table.

Cheers everyone!

Beer instead of wine? Cold Bath Brewery explains why!

Wine has been a perennial favourite for those looking to match a Christmas tipple with their festive meals. But in focussing so whole heartedly on wine, we’ve overlooked the country’s favourite drink: BEER.

The craft beer renaissance has led many to explore the depths of flavour that beer can bring, only to be enhanced when paired with the right food. After years of bland mainstays, the consideration of how to integrate specific tasting notes into the brewing process so they can be subsequently paired with particular foods has become crucially important for a number of breweries, none more so than Cold Bath Brewing. By placing a modern twist on classic recipes, these Harrogate based beers are designed to release the true flavours of your food. Unapologetically mature, this is beer as it was intended.

PALE

Using all English ingredients, this Pale Ale brings a balanced citrus flavour to the table, giving it the perfect balance to complement traditional, meaty English pies.

PILSNER LAGER

Brewed with Yorkshire water, deliberately under-carbonated, this lager uses hops that are more commonly found in ale bringing a subtle bitterness that is best paired with herbed capon for any of you looking for a turkey alternative this Christmas.

Once your main course is washed down and attentions start to turn towards what’s next, it’s time to break out the cheese and the Pilsner. With tasting notes of caramel and malt, the biscuity notes really cut through a creamy goat’s cheese. Cold Bath Brewing have a range of beers that are made to compliment your cuisine and you can even order a Cold Bath Christmas Selection Box now from their website (as below).

Christmas @ William & Victoria

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF HARROGATE ON COLD BATH ROAD, WILLIAM & VICTORIA HAS BEEN OWNED AND MANAGED BY THE STRAKER FAMILY SINCE 1982.

Front of house, David Straker has been a familiar face behind the bar for 25 years and he is passionate about what he does. We caught up with David to ask him about plans for this Christmas.

“As expected, and with recent tier announcements, the run up to Christmas this year will feel a little different. No more large parties, a bit more restraint and a lot of extra care to keep us all safe. “However the main elements of our restaurant and wine bar will remain you’ll still experience our friendly service and the food will be delicious festive fayre with plenty of ‘Will & Vic’s’ favourites and traditional Christmas treats that celebrate and support our local suppliers.”

The à la carte menu at William & Victoria includes their sublime slow cooked lamb Henry and beef rib with a rich red wine sauce. Or you can choose their three-course festive set menu which features some delicious festive starters, mouth-watering mains including roasted turkey parcels with cranberry stuffing and all the trimmings, and some delectable desserts, plus a special Yorkshire cheeseboard to finish! Being the first wine bar to open in Harrogate 40 years ago, they naturally

have a wide variety of specially selected wines – many available by the glass – and have added some Christmas cocktails for added indulgence over the Christmas period.

For those who don’t mind battling the winter nights there are a few outside tables and their newly erected festive gazebo is perfect for those crisp winter evenings (note the ‘rule of 6’ applies). The heaters will be on, but you’ll still need your big coat!

Now that their doors have opened again, they will be in Tier 2 so you can only reserve a table with people from your own household and those in your support bubble. As usual, a big, warm welcome awaits at Will & Vic’s. Merry Christmas everyone.

It’s all about the tree this year! What ’s in vogue? Whether you’re an artificial or real tree fan, there are so many options. The wildcard this year has to be the black Christmas tree. Dark and dramatic, a black tree can certainly introduce glamour and serves as a great background for any colour of decoration. It may be unconventional but will look fabulous in a contemporary or traditional setting, fitting in with this year’s Grandmillennial trend. To achieve this look, try adorning a black tree with your family’s treasured Christmas decorations that have been passed down from generation to generation.

IMAGE SHOWS NEW BUYERS WITH OUR BESPOKE CHRISTMAS BAUBLES! MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM EVERYONE AT STONEBRIDGE HOMES

Neutral accessories are always popular and decorating with black, white, silver and navy hues are a good choice. To spruce things up add in some metallic elements as they not only reflect light, but they add a touch of glamour. Mirrored and glittery baubles can ramp up the luxe too. Recycled options are in demand this year and anything nature inspired, creating a Scandi feel. White decorations, parcels wrapped in recycled brown paper and a wicker basket for the tree base, all echo this timeless style. Don’t forget that colour can also create a beautiful tree - jewel coloured baubles – amethyst, emerald, sapphire and ruby red offer more subtlety yet they really celebrate Christmas colours.

Clothier to the stars of business & industry... meet Paul Ibbotson

“The trend over the last few months has definitely shifted to casual - jackets, chinos, dresses and casual shirts are the new norm”

With a degree in chemical engineering, Paul Ibbotson’s career has certainly not led him down the path he expected to take. As a ‘clothier’, he has 22-years of styling the stars of business and industry and he’s loved every minute of it! Paul comes to the rescue of those of us who don’t have the time, nor the inclination to shop for their clothes (so they’re quite often male clients!) Paul works for Tom James Europe and they have been helping clients present themselves at their very best since 1966. Paul comments “It’s about getting what you want. The right fit. The right fabric. The right details. The right style. Crafted using your exact measurements, custom

clothing is the perfect expression of who you are - or who you intend to be. Many of us have progressed through our lives buying a great car, going on fabulous holidays and moving up the property ladder, but when it comes to our clothing, we haven’t upgraded, so quite often the quality, fit and cut doesn’t match our expectations.” Paul can help clients choose from over 500 custom suit fabrics and 250 custom dress shirt fabrics, helping to build a whole wardrobe or just a couple of key pieces. And he literally only takes 30 minutes of your time - and for those who are reluctant shoppers, that can be quicker than finding a car park in the town centre! If you’d like an informal chat with Paul, his contact details are shown here.

Launch of our community fund £10,000 available* Launching 2021

We’re delighted to announce that we will launch our new community fund in the New Year. The fund will see local charities and organisations benefit from a pot of £10,000 that will be allocated throughout 2021. The fund aims to support as many local groups as possible, initially, in the Harrogate area. Stonebridge Homes recognise that the last few months have been particularly difficult for many organisations and hopes to offer a little financial support to those who work tirelessly for a community scheme and whose funding avenues may be in short supply.

Steve Errington, Managing Director of Stonebridge Homes said “There are many charities and organisations within the Harrogate area that

*Terms and conditions apply.

make a huge difference to the people in the town and many of those could benefit from some extra money, especially as a result of the challenges they have faced in the last few months. We are keen to support community groups that will directly help the people of Harrogate and we hope that these communities continue to go for strength to strength. It is really important to us that we give something back to the communities in which we live and work and that’s what the community fund has been set up to do.” Applying to the fund is straightforward as the amount awarded to any one group or organisation is not set in stone and will be judged entirely on its merits. Further details and an application form will be available on our website from 04/01/2021.

ANTI-MONOPOLY This game may look familiar, but don’t be fooled – it’s a property trading game with an exciting twist! Players choose free enterprise or monopoly, then play under different rules. Supporting Variety’s Big Build

In May 2016, following a section 5 OFSTED Inspection, Green Meadows Special Educational Needs School in Guiseley was judged to be inadequate in all areas, including safeguarding and was duly placed into Special Measures. A new leadership team was deployed to the school and the change of culture has had a profoundly positive impact on the pupils. Stonebridge Homes is proud to be a major sponsor of this project that will start mid December 2020.

We have worked with Variety in the past on their Springwater Special Educational Needs School project in Harrogate. This is another fantastic example of what can be achieved when the private, public and third sectors work together. These Big Build projects have only been possible when local people and companies pull together and play their part in these transformative, legacy projects which will benefit not only the children now, but for generations to come. Variety’s greatest wish is for this legacy to grow beyond these individual projects and to transform Special Needs Education across the whole of Yorkshire, ensuring that all children, now and in the future, are given the vital tools and resources to become the best versions of themselves. They certainly have the support of Stonebridge.
