A message from our president & CEO
Kids and teens across Alberta – and far beyond – deserve the very best pediatric health care. Thanks to your generosity, the Stollery Children’s Hospital is delivering that care every single day.
This year, donor support has fueled incredible progress.
Together, we’ve:
• Expanded access to care through virtual health, ensuring children in rural and northern communities receive critical support when and where they need it (pg. 14).
• Advanced leading-edge research in areas like genetics, where families are finally receiving answers after years of uncertainty (pg. 28), and in neonatal care, where new approaches are improving survival and outcomes for the tiniest babies (pg. 30).
• Strengthened mental health supports with expanded outpatient psychiatry services and new programs that mean families don’t always have to turn to the emergency department in crisis (pg. 40).
• Taken steps to improve patient and family experiences through projects like the reimagined Pediatric Surgery Clinic (pg. 11) set to open in 2026, and dedicated spaces like the newly renovated Simply Supper Lemon Love Bear’s Den (pg. 18).
And so much more. The Stollery provides care through more than 316,000 patient visits every year — and every single one of them has a story.
Each of those stories and every highlight in this report, reflects what’s possible when a community comes together for kids. From training the next generation of pediatric specialists, to funding state-of-the-art equipment, to supporting family-centred care, your gifts are helping give all kids the best chance to live long and healthy lives.
We are grateful to our community and government partners for continuing to make children’s health a priority. On behalf of everyone at the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, thank you for believing in what’s possible. Your support is not only changing lives today — it’s creating a brighter tomorrow for children across Alberta, Western Canada and beyond.
With gratitude,

STOLLERY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Through your generosity, we’re helping bridge the gap from standard to advanced children’s health care.
We allocate donor investments for annual priority projects at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, and in some cases we hold funds for long-term transformational projects. These investments help keep all three Stollery sites at the forefront of children’s health care — the Stollery built within the walls of the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, sharing space with the University of Alberta Hospital, the Stollery at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Stollery at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.
GRANT FUNDING: STOLLERY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Thanks to the generosity of our community, we granted $9,112,590 to support the Stollery last year. 2024-25 $9,112,590
STOLLERY BY THE NUMBERS
The Stollery Children’s Hospital serves the largest geographical area of any children’s hospital in North America. It’s also the hub for pediatric cardiac care surgery in Western Canada and a national leader in solid organ transplantation.
Serving kids from across four western provinces and all territories, with nearly 30 per cent of patients coming from outside the Edmonton region, the Stollery is a vital part of Canada’s health care system.
Because of you, kids from backyards across Western Canada have the best chance for a long and healthy life.
• 28% of patients from outside the Edmonton area • 33% of NICU patients come from outside of Edmonton
Last year the Stollery responded to:
316,688 patient visits
55,392 emergency department visits
153,461 virtual health visits
264,080 outpatient clinic visits
3,300 mental health emergency visits
11,961 surgeries
2,575 of the tiniest patients in the NICU
BUILDING A BETTER CLINIC FOR KIDS WHO NEED SURGERY
Thanks to community support, the Stollery Pediatric Surgery Clinic is getting a major upgrade to improve care, comfort and healing for kids and families.
The current clinic was facing growing challenges, including not having enough space to support the high number of patients coming through its doors. Seating was limited, privacy was hard to find and families often had to travel to another part of the hospital for therapy and rehabilitation services. That’s why, in September 2023, the Stollery and Alberta Health Services began work to expand and reimagine the space — all through the lens of family-centred care.
Working with the principles and values of patient and family-centered care, their key areas of change were:
• Expanded waiting area
An open, family-friendly waiting room with a dedicated play area for kids.
• Improved patient flow
More check-in spaces, privacy walls and a colour-coded layout to make navigating the clinic easier.
• New medical facilities
Two X-ray rooms, a urodynamic room, two additional exam rooms and a dedicated rehabilitation treatment space.
• Enhanced accessibility
Fewer barriers for patients with mobility challenges and a design focused on patient and family-centered care.
Local artist Jason Blower was also hired to bring the beauty of Edmonton and Alberta to the clinic through four large murals in the waiting areas and corridors. His calming, nature-inspired artwork helps create a peaceful and welcoming environment for families, with each clinic room having a different graphic.
With the support of generous donors and partners, the Stollery can make spaces like the Pediatric Surgery Clinic built for kids and their families –making a trip to the Hospital feel a little less scary.
CHANGING THE CULTURE AROUND PEDIATRIC PAIN CARE
In addition to correct diagnosis and timely treatment, pain care has always been a top concern for Stollery families. Earlier this year, the Stollery achieved ChildKind International certification, demonstrating an institution-wide commitment to treating pediatric pain.
In 2020, the Stollery Children’s Hospital became the Western Canadian hub for Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP). SKIP is a national knowledge network whose mission is to improve children’s pain management through education, policy and practice
One of the goals of SKIP is to bring ChildKind International certification – the highest standards in pediatric pain care – to every hospital that participates in SKIP. For the Stollery, this process began in 2020 with a series of environmental scans of pain care performed by Dr. Elise Kammerer, SKIP knowledge broker and Dr. Samina Ali, Stollery Pediatric Emergency Doctor. In 2021, Jesusa Pulongbarit, Patient Care Manager for Pediatric Trauma and Dr. Samina Ali knew that the next step to getting certified was funding. And that’s when they came to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation with their vision.
Two years after their initial submission, and after overcoming the hurdles of shifting priorities due to the pandemic, they heard back from the Foundation that their project had been approved for funding, thanks to the generosity of donors like you.
The first thing they did was hire a clinical nurse educator: Angela Bokenfohr, who already worked for the Stollery in Pediatric Trauma Surgery and as a front-line leader in pediatric medicine and education. She brought with her intimate knowledge of the gaps in inpatient pain management.
The team of three, along with their SKIP knowledge broker, developed a core working group to achieve their goals. This included medical co-lead, Dr. Hayley Turnbull; Child Life Educator Allison Naylor; the nurse practitioner for Acute Pain Services, Leeann Lukenchuk; two Stollery parents, and two former Stollery patients themselves.
“Our Stollery families were front and center,” says Dr. Samina Ali. “They were at the table from the very start to the very end of the certification process. This was for them, with them.”
Achieving certification involved meeting the five ChildKind principles:
• An institutional commitment to pain prevention, assessment and treatment.
• Ongoing education programs and awareness initiatives on pain for staff, trainees, patients and any of their caregivers.
• Use of evidence-informed, developmentally appropriate processes for assessment of acute and chronic pain.
• Specific evidence informed protocols for pain prevention and treatment including pharmacological, psychological and physical methods.
• Regular institutional self-monitoring within the framework of continuous quality improvement.
To achieve these goals, their working group hit the ground running.
• They brought operational leaders onboard, including Christine Westerlund, Senior Operating Officer at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, who presented to Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone about the certification.
• They introduced an annual pain education day for all Stollery staff, from nurses and lab technicians to security staff and housekeeping.
• They implemented validated pain scales and added pain scale posters at every single bedside.
• They adopted the three Ps for pain – physical, psychological and pharmacological – to ensure pain management was multimodal.
• And they created a pain dashboard that incorporated available pain care data, from Connectcare to patient and family surveys.
“People started to get excited about riding the wave.” says Angela. “I knew my job was making a
difference when people started coming to us to learn more about pain management instead of us having go to them.”
Angela still gets goosebumps when she thinks about Alberta Precision Laboratory staff coming to her to learn about pain management in their work with Stollery kids. Phlebotomists (medical practitioners who are trained to draw blood) for the laboratory are not Alberta Health Service employees, but they had heard about the Stollery’s commitment to pain care – and they wanted to be a part of it.
“Pain management is now integrated into the culture of the Hospital more readily than it ever was because of these certification efforts,” comments Dr. Ali, “The heart was always there, but the efforts allowed us to bring it right to the surface and put time and money behind it.”
In January of 2025, the Stollery received their ChildKind International certification, one of only 22 hospitals in the world who have achieved this standard of patient pain management. The Stollery is the first multi-site institution to be certified – all three Stollery sites received certification!
And the team isn’t done there. With the groundwork they’ve accomplished and a dedicated pain committee in place, the future of pain management at the Stollery is bright. What’s more, new technologies and pharmacological advancements are on the horizon: digital technologies, augmented reality, topical anaesthetics that work faster, new non-opioid medications and more. And this is all thanks to donor support.
HOW VIRTUAL HEALTH IS SAVING LIVES IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
Thanks to Foundation funding, even more resources are now available to ensure patients receive the care they need, when they need it most.
Nearly 30% of patients who visit the Stollery Children’s Hospital come from outside the Edmonton area.
For many of these families, traveling to the hospital can be challenging — especially for children with complex care needs. Fortunately, virtual care has made remarkable progress in recent years.
In 2023, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation began fundraising for the creation of the Stollery Centre for Excellence in Virtual Health. The goal: to enhance and expand innovative, pediatric virtual health solutions across rural and northern Alberta and beyond.
Those donor dollars were put to work right away and recently, a medical consultation from a rural Alberta hospital to the Stollery Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) team demonstrated the life-saving potential of integrated virtual health technology and enabling Stollery care everywhere through virtual connections.
A phone consultation was initiated to discuss a young child with an emergency medical condition. The referral site hospital was already providing ventilation assistance to the patient, and the Stollery PICU team suggested switching to a video platform for a more thorough assessment. Upon initiating the video call, the Stollery PICU team supported the referral site team through the resuscitation process in real-time, providing step-by-step instructions and support. The video platform enabled quick and efficient communication, saving valuable minutes and the life of the child.
During the resuscitation, the Stollery PICU intensivist spoke directly with the child’s family, explaining the situation and care plan in detail. This timely communication helped the family understand the seriousness of the situation and provided valuable emotional support. The PICU team also clarified medication orders with the referral site’s registered nurse, ensuring correct doses were administered, and worked with the site physician to discuss contingency plans while awaiting transport to the Stollery.
The power of virtual care was evident when the video call allowed the Stollery PICU team to see the child’s condition and to provide emergent clinical consult support and guidance. The video ensured everyone — from the family to the multidisciplinary
teams — was aligned and understood what needed to be done. The virtual video consultation enabled real time teamwork from a distance to secure the life of a child and enabled conditions for best health outcome for the child.
This case highlights the value of real-time visual consultation and underscores the profound impact of our virtual health initiative in the child’s care and recovery. The future of kids’ health involves getting kids access to care wherever they are, through seamlessly integrated virtual care. With your ongoing support, the Stollery Centre for Excellence in Virtual Health will continue their efforts to increase virtual care in rural and northern communities with tactics like these valuable video consultations. Thank you for making this possible.
Meet Karen
Karen has been a senior program manager at the Stollery Children’s Hospital since spring 2024. She is responsible for turning the vision for the Stollery Centre for Excellence in Virtual Health into a reality.

PRACTICE LIKE A PRO: DON’T HOPE FOR THE BEST — TRAIN FOR IT
Just like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins doesn’t wait until game day to perfect his shot, health-care teams at the Stollery Children’s Hospital don’t wait until an emergency to practice saving lives.
At the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Simulation for Care, Understanding, Betterment and Safety (SimCUBS) program helps teams train like elite athletes, running realistic emergency scenarios, refining teamwork and building technical skills in a psychologically safe environment.
Thanks to donor support, the SimCUBS teams have a state-of-the-art simulation lab right inside the Stollery. This space allows nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists and others to rehearse high-stakes situations before they happen in real life, because every second counts.
The impact doesn’t stop at the Hospital doors. The SimCUBS team brings simulations on the road to patient rooms, schools and rural hospitals across Alberta ensuring world-class pediatric care reaches every child, no matter where they are.
Since launching in 2021, SimCUBS has delivered more than 2,400 simulations involving over 4,300 participants – including Stollery staff, community health partners and families. Together, they’ve rehearsed everything from resuscitating premature infants to navigating trauma-informed mental health crises in teens.
The team also uses simulation to train families of kids with complex medical needs, like those going home on breathing machines. They help caregivers practice real-life emergency scenarios in a safe setting, so they feel confident and capable when it matters most.
Why it matters
Simulation helps health-care teams catch mistakes before they happen and respond faster when every second matters. It improves communication, builds confidence and ultimately helps them deliver safer, more reliable care every time. Because at the Stollery, excellence isn’t an accident. It’s practiced.
Everything they do is possible because of generous donors like you.
Your support has:
• Built a cutting-edge pediatric simulation lab at the Stollery
• Equipped the team with life-like manikins (from newborns to teens) and technology to record, review and learn from each session
• Funded their entire SimCUBS team, including new team members this year to help meet growing demand
• Funded the upcoming expansion of a second dedicated simulation space to support even more learners
• Helped bring “Stollery care anywhere”, providing world-class pediatric training across Alberta
With your continued support the SimCUBS team will keep growing to reach more families, more care teams and more communities, so that every Stollery kid gets the best care possible.

In her free time, Megan loves to get outdoors with her family! She’ll be out paddle boarding in the summer and snowboarding in the winter. It can be a bit chaotic when all four of her kids are out on the slopes, but she loves that she gets to share that adventure with them.
SPREADING THE LEMONY LOVE
Each August, kids across northern Alberta serve up ice cold lemonade as part of Simply Supper’s Lemonade Stand Day. In recognition of the event raising more than $2 million since 2014, the newly renovated family room at the Stollery’s Phillip C. Etches Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital will now be known as the Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Bear’s Den.
In honour of the 10th annual Lemonade Stand Day in 2024, funds raised were in support of renovating and enhancing the family room located outside the Stollery’s Philip C. Etches Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. This renovation would create a safe, comfortable and family oriented space for families who have a baby in the NICU.
The renovations are now complete and the new and improved family space will now be known as the Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Bear’s Den.
“It’s so amazing to see the work that our Junior Lemon Squeezer’s do across the Stollery come to life and be there for Stollery kids and their families forever,” says Monita Chapman, owner of Simply Supper and founder of Lemonade Stand Day.
“It’s also about raising the next generation of philanthropists, to continue doing this good work.”
The Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Bear’s Den is a bright, inclusive space for Stollery families featuring:
• An attached quiet room, giving families a private space
• New, comfortable furnishings
• A library with books for both parents and their kids
• Fun and interactive games on the wall for kids
• A kitchen and dining table for families to eat, spend quality time together and take breaks
• Dedicated Patient and Family-Centered Care staff to be there for families around the clock
• And more!
“This room, and the adjoining quiet room, not only provide comfort to families, but also an improved spaced for togetherness,” says Sarah Topilko, co-ordinator for the Patient & Family-Centered Care Team at the Stollery. “Our Patient and FamilyCentered care team is excited to be able to run programming, such as family peer support groups, family orientations and parent education sessions in the space, creating a community hub and sense of normalcy for families.”
Thank you to Simply Supper, the Junior Planning Committee and kids across Alberta for making the Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Bear’s Den possible.

BRINGING CRITICAL CARE CLOSER TO HOME
Transport
Every day, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Critical Care Transport Teams go the distance to save the lives of young patients who require specialized care in emergency situations across Canada.
Serving one of the largest geographical areas in the world — spanning over 500,000 km² across Northern and Central Alberta, the Northwest Territories and neighbouring provinces, the Stollery’s transport teams bring specialized intensive care directly to kids who need it the most, when they need it the most.
With more than 80 specially trained pediatric and neonatal intensive care nurses and respiratory therapists, the Stollery’s Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Teams respond to as many as five calls every 24 hours, transporting more than 1,000 critically ill neonates and children each year, with 85 per cent of these young patients being under the age of five.
From incubators that cradle premature infants as young as 23 weeks gestational age, to ventilators and IV pumps designed for precise care, the equipment they carry is just as specialized as the teams themselves. The Stollery’s transport team is the only pediatric team in Western Canada equipped to initiate and transport patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), offering a critical lifeline for kids with the most fragile hearts and lungs.
Whether by ground ambulance, airplane or helicopter, they use the fastest route possible to reach hospitals across Canada, bringing kids safely to the Stollery.
The Stollery Transport Teams don’t only go the distance, but thanks to our generous donors, the team has access to cutting-edge equipment and can offer programs like the Critical Care Outreach program, ensuring health care providers, no matter their location, have the knowledge and confidence to care for critically ill babies and young patience in any emergency situation through:
• Education and training
• Telemedicine and virtual health
• Collaboration and engagement
• Outreach co-ordination
• Program development and evaluation
Together, we’re not just funding equipment — we’re funding the ability to deliver world-class care wherever a child needs it, whenever they need it.
Meet Becca and Heidi
Becca Deslaurier (left) and Heidi Haring (right) are members of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) transport team at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Becca is a respiratory therapist and Heidi is a transport RN — both of which are crucial roles for caring for and transporting sick babies.
As part of the NICU transport team, Becca and Heidi provide care to the tiniest patients at both the Walter C. Mackenzie and Royal Alexandra Hospital Stollery sites. When they receive a call to go out on transport, both a respiratory therapist and RN are needed to provide care and transport sick babies to the higher care they need at the Stollery.
In Becca’s free time, she loves to be at home with her husband and cat, spend time outdoors, visit with friends and travel to new countries. For Heidi, when she isn’t busy with her grandchildren, she fills her spare time doing all types of crafts from knitting to card-making.
STOLLERY SUPPORT TO SAY GOODBYE
The Aid for Symptoms & Serious Illness Support Team (ASSIST) at the Stollery Children’s Hospital provides pediatric palliative care for the whole family — so they can focus on what’s important.
Beau was born July 1, 2022, when he suffered multiple brain bleeds and was eventually diagnosed with hydrocephalous. After five weeks of fighting, Beau passed away on August 9, 2022, surrounded by his family. From his diagnosis to his last day earth side, the ASSIST and Child Life team was there for his family, because not every Stollery story has a happy ending – but no kid comes to the Hospital alone.
But the care didn’t stop there. Through play-based therapy with ASSIST and Child Life, Beau’s older brother, Gage, was able to re-identify his feelings, describe his emotions and use dinosaurs to talk about real-world issues. His family is incredibly grateful for the care they received as they know it’s what helped Gage grieve the loss of his baby brother.
The ASSIST team at the Stollery provides palliative care not just for kids, but the whole family. The team of doctors, nurses, psychologists and grief counsellor helps families understand what to expect, make goals and decisions to keep them comfortable. They provide care for kids of all ages, including those not yet born but diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.
The team’s main goal is making sure there’s no pain, suffering or distress for kids and their families, regardless of the diagnosis. The focus is on living life to the fullest, managing symptoms so that kids and families can focus on what’s important and feeling as well as possible, both physically and mentally. The team works closely with the kid’s health-care team, in the setting of their choice: in hospital, clinics or in their homes.
Programs at the Stollery like ASSIST are important to families whose Stollery journey looks different than most.
“Most families don’t think about the support their kids would need to say goodbye to their siblings.” - Brettany, Gage and Beau’s mom.
With health care professionals who specialize in palliative care, families at the Stollery can have the full support they deserve even during the most challenging of times.
Meet Sarah
Sarah is a physician with the Aid for Symptoms and Serious Illness Support (ASSIST) team at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. As an ASSIST physician, Sarah works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide pediatric palliative care to infants and children living with serious illness. Her focus is on improving quality of life through the provision of pain and symptom management throughout a child’s course of illness, including at end-of-life. She works with patients and families across a variety of settings, both in-hospital and at home.
Outside of work, Sarah loves to spend time with her husband, two young children and her large extended family. They keep busy by running and adventuring in the river valley, skating on their backyard rink and baking to maintain a steady stock of homemade goods.
GIVING COMFORT TO KIDS AND FAMILIES
The Patient and Family-Centered Care program supports Stollery kids and their families in many different ways throughout their health care journey.
The Patient and Family-Centered Care program at the Stollery Children’s Hospital has many different programs, initiatives and designated family spaces to support and care for Stollery kids and families during their Hospital stay. One of the many programs includes Giving Comfort.
The Stollery Women’s Network launched the Giving Comfort program in 2017 with the goal of bringing comfort to families who unexpectedly find themselves at the Hospital. Now managed by the Patient and Family-Centered Care team, this program offers essential items to families during their Hospital stay, including toiletries, activity books, clothing and other items such as phone chargers and headphones.
Last year, the Giving Comfort program supported Stollery families through providing:
• 2,568 toiletry kits
• 4,138 colouring books
• 2,899 electronics
• 1,362 T-shirts
Patient and Family-Centered Care programs like these provide comfort and relief in times of uncertainty and overwhelming stress. Thanks to your generous support, we can continue to be there for Stollery kids and their families in times when they need it the most.
Meet Stephanie
Stephanie is a Child Life specialist in the Emergency department at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The Foundation-funded Child Life department at the Stollery helps kids adjust to and understand hospitalization, treatment and illness — all while making sure kids still get to be kids.
Stephanie’s job is to work with the interdisciplinary team to support patients and promote coping. Her focus is providing evidence-based, developmentally and psychologically appropriate interventions including therapeutic play, preparation for procedures and education – all with the goal of reducing fear, anxiety and pain for her patients.
On top of her work at the Hospital, she is currently pursuing a masters in counselling degree!
WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE
As the primary funder of the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and our more than 100,000 donors are proud to support the talented and forward-thinking researchers who are changing how children’s health care is thought about and delivered.
WCHRI researchers are leaders in new and exciting evidence-based treatments, breaking barriers in children’s health and enhancing care for Stollery families, giving every kid the best chance at a long and healthy life. Together, with our partners at the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, we’re helping shape the future, with WCHRI researchers at the forefront, pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities in children’s health care.
GRANT FUNDING: WCHRI
Thanks to the generosity of our community, last year we granted $4,391,109 to WCHRI to further support cutting-edge pediatric research.
UNLOCKING GENETIC MYSTERIES: TRANSLATIONAL GENOMICS HUB PROVIDES ANSWERS FOR FAMILIES
Researchers use cutting-edge sequencing and collaboration to solve complex genetic cases.
When two siblings came to the Stollery Children’s Hospital with developmental delays and unusual facial features, doctors suspected a rare genetic disorder called Alazami Syndrome. Standard genetic tests weren’t able to confirm the diagnosis, so they turned to the Translational Genomics Hub (TGH) for help.
Supported with funding from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation through the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, the THG brings together experts from different areas of biology and genetics to solve genetic mysteries. The team evaluates the results of specialized genetic tests and runs experiments to confirm their findings. Their goal: identifying new genetic disorders, or variants of existing ones, to provide a diagnosis.
“It offers an extra layer of possibilities — both for clinicians and researchers — to complete those complex genetic investigations,” says Oana Caluseriu, a clinical geneticist and associate professor in the Department of Medical Genetics.
She leads the TGH alongside Todd Alexander, a Foundation-funded researcher and chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
The mystery of the siblings — aged 9 and 17 — was solved by medical geneticist Saadet Andrews. She determined they have Alazami Syndrome from a gene variant that hadn’t yet been recorded in medical journals.
Andrews’ findings were published in June 2025, confirming her diagnosis for the family and updating the specific variant she found in a public database to help medical geneticists all over the world.
For those who’ve waited decades for answers, a genetic diagnosis comes as a relief, even if no treatment is available. It may allow families to access community supports for their loved ones or prevent the disorder from recurring in their family tree.
To date, about 7,000 genetic disorders have been clinically described globally, but not all have a gene attached or a cause identified. “There is still a lot of work to do, and all of us are just adding one little brick at a time,” Caluseriu says.
In the three years since it launched, the TGH has expanded the types of tests it offers. This is good news for those still waiting for answers — like the large family with whom Caluseriu has been working to identify a fatal, genetic disorder that has afflicted five generations. After identifying a promising gene, she used an online platform — “kind of a dating app for researchers” — that matched her with colleagues from around the
world who have found the same gene in their patients. She connected with a research group in Australia and a scientist in Calgary, resulting in a rewarding collaboration.
“It has taken years and a lot of effort, but we are now getting ready to write the manuscript and describe a new genetic disorder,” she says. “It’s a very complex process, but once we convincingly demonstrate our findings, we will be able to work with the family to avoid the devastating outcomes that have ravaged so many lives. And the same will happen for any other family carrying the same faulty gene anywhere in the world who accesses a genetic service.”
HOW RESEARCH CAN HELP THE TINIEST PATIENTS
Dr. Georg Schmölzer is leading a new national partnership to co-ordinate more neonatal clinical trials in Canada to improve outcomes for premature babies and their families.
Since 2013, Dr. Georg Schmölzer has been the recipient of 20 grants and awards from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation through the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI).
Dr. Schmölzer is a neonatal physician, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta and the director of CSAR – the Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation – a world-leading program that is unique in Canada.
With a focus on the resuscitation of newborn babies, the Platform for Trials in Neonatal Care (PANDA), launched in 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Schmölzer and with key support from the Foundation through WCHRI, which also provides clinical trials support to the network. PANDA Clinical Trials Network was established to conduct neonatal trials across Canada, while also building a lasting trial network for the future.
Resuscitation is needed for about one in every 1,000 babies who are delivered at term, and more often for those delivered preterm. Dr. Schmölzer’s current research explores a potentially safer and more controlled means of providing breathing support to preterm infants that could be implemented in the delivery room and lead to a reduction in negative health outcomes in these infants.
Thanks to your support, you’re helping fund life-saving research to improve outcomes and increase the chances of babies surviving neonatal resuscitation.
Your support helps us invest in cutting-edge pediatric research
Today, we support 325+ researchers in 211 active research projects and upwards of 200 clinical trials at the Stollery Children’s Hospital
Together, we’ve invested more than $85.5M in kids’ health research since 2006
40% of WCHRI members collaborate internationally with other researchers

THE POWER OF INTERCONNECTION AND INDIGENOUS HEALTH
As part of our ongoing commitment to the health and wellness of Indigenous kids and youth, we’re proud to invest in programs such as the Ispimihk Awâsisak Program.
Grant Bruno is a registered member of Samson Cree Nation, an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta and the academic lead for Indigenous Child Health with the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI). As one of the few First Nations faculty members in pediatrics across Canada, Bruno walks between two worlds, with a focus on creating a culturally responsive health care model that supports Indigenous children and youth, particularly in the areas of neurodiversity and intellectual disability.
With these goals in mind, Bruno proudly founded the Ispimihk Awâsisak Program. Guided by the Nêhîyaw (Plains Cree) concept of Wâhktotowin,
emphasizing relationality and interconnectedness, the program focuses on Indigenous health research for children, youth and their families, with their main priorities being:
• Building an Indigenous health research connection hub and community
• Committing to holistic healing pathways for researchers, staff, trainees and community
• Nurturing a supportive environment for Indigenous health research
• Collaboration to overcome barriers
• Facilitating learning and community engagement through sharing and promoting Indigenous knowledge and Indigenous research
Priorities include:
• Community-led research
• Engaging with community members and researchers as equal partners.
• New pediatric clinic
• A pediatric clinic in Maskwacîs provides comprehensive health services for children and youth.
• Indigenous children centered community events
• Annual events to connect families and professionals – increasing access to support for Indigenous children.
• Health promotion and mentorship
• Programs to promote health service access, education and mentorship for current and prospective Indigenous health students.
• Health education
• Teaching and promoting Indigenous health at the university and within communities.
They have many incredible projects on the horizon including a WCHRI advisory circle, special Olympics, Indigenous caregiving collective and ceremonies centered intervention for Indigenous youth – highlighting the need for and importance of Indigenous led research.
Thanks to our generous donors, we can invest in vital programs like the Ispmihk Awâsisak Program that continues to advocate for and advance Indigenous children’s health care.
TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH SMILES
Thanks to the partnership between the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry at the University of Alberta, hundreds of kids receive essential oral care they need each year, for free.
During a visit to the Mike Petryk School of Dentistry, the dentistry students had the opportunity to share some key highlights that show the remarkable effect of the Foundation’s support for the Pediatric Dentistry Outreach Program.
From September to November 2024, the School treated 421 kids, performing a total of 2,722 procedures—all at no cost to the patients or their families, including:
• 213 kids treated through the School Visit Program
• 149 kids from the Metis Nation of Alberta
• 59 kids through the SHINE Program (Student Health Initiative for the Needs of Edmonton)
These groups reflect kids who may not have access to necessary dental care without the Foundation’s support due to financial barriers, knowledge gaps or logistical challenges making it difficult to schedule and keep appointments.
With continued support from the Foundation, the School of Dentistry looks forward to continuing to grow the Pediatric Dentistry Outreach Program over the next four years, providing more than 2,000 kids with full oral health assessments, customized treatment plans, education and overall well-being.
Through this partnership and donor support, lives are being changed and smiles are being restored—one kid at a time. The School is grateful for the Foundation’s continued dedication and looks forward to making an even greater impact together in the future, with plans to expand the program’s reach even further in the coming months and years.

RECOVERY ALBERTA
With your support, the Stollery Children’s Hospital has expanded its outpatient psychiatry clinic.
This has increased the capacity for outpatient and phone consultations, allowing kids and their families the comfort of receiving mental health support in their community instead of a hospital setting. For the Stollery, this means fewer emergency room visits for recurring issues and more capacity for immediate emergencies.
GRANT FUNDING: RECOVERY ALBERTA
Thanks to the generosity of our community, last year we granted $1,112,055 to Recovery Alberta, making further strides in mental health care at the Stollery.
2024-25 $1,112,055
MENTAL HEALTH CARE IS ESSENTIAL CARE
Just like physical health, we all have mental health — and sometimes kids and teens need support taking care of it.
Mental illness is a real medical condition. It happens when the brain struggles to regulate thoughts, emotions or behaviours. Just like with a broken bone or chronic illness, mental illness is treatable.
The need for mental health care is growing fast— and too often, kids aren’t getting it. Right now, only one in three young people in Canada with a mental illness receive the treatment they need. In Canada, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are the most common mental disorders in youth. Around 3% to 9% of kids will be diagnosed with anxiety and 3% to 7% with ADHD.
With more youth from Alberta coming to the Stollery Emergency department for mental health crises than for broken bones, the Stollery grew their mental health-care services to meet the growing need. Donors helped make this possible.
The Stollery Children’s Hospital now has:
• Two nurses 24/7 on the Emergency Mental Health Team and two social workers
• The Mental Health Assessment and Stabilization Team
• A mental health Child Life Specialist
• Clinical Nurse Educators for Stollery Mental Health and Pediatric Teams
• A family counsellor
• The Stollery Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic
When mental health problems go untreated in kids and teens, their physical health suffers. At the Stollery, mental health care is health care — and thanks to your support, youth in Alberta don’t need to face it alone.
3,300
children came to the Stollery for a mental health emergency
600 families were supported by a psychiatrist through outpatient or urgent care clinics
In 2024, more than:
2,600
kids were assessed by a mental health nurse in the Stollery Emergency
600 families were seen by a psychiatrist at the urgent, outpatient or consultation liaison clinic
Meet Stephanie
Stephanie is a Clinical Nurse Educator specializing in mental health at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Stephanie leads education and training across the Stollery to help staff feel more confident and equipped to care for children and youth with mental illness.
While she was completing her master’s, she interviewed Stollery nurses from the inpatient units and Emergency department about caring for kids with mental illness. They hadn’t chosen to work in psychiatry, but they were often the ones supporting children after a suicide attempt or seeing how chronic illness affects a child’s mental health. Stephanie was there to help.
Outside of work, Stephanie’s a potter — she finds working with clay therapeutic, and she enjoys having handmade dishes all over her house. She also weaves, plays squash and spends as much time as she can with her dogs (and her partner too!).
350 kids received specialized psychiatric care in a medical unit
1,200 staff were trained in youth mental health
Afterword: A message from our board chair
This past year showed us what is possible when a community stands together, from generous giving and bold research to life-changing care for children. But one challenge continues to grow: space at the Stollery.
The Stollery is Canada’s second-largest children’s hospital and the most specialized in Western Canada. Yet it remains the only children’s hospital in the country woven throughout an adult facility, operating at or over capacity for years. The consequences are impossible to ignore. Hallways become waiting rooms. Play spaces disappear. Families share rooms during some of the most critical moments of their child’s care. This is not the standard in other children’s hospitals, and it should not be ours.
That is why we’re working with the Government of Alberta, the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the University of Alberta and partners across the province to build a new, stand-alone Stollery: a hospital designed for kids, families and the future. With $20 million already committed by the province for planning, the groundwork is underway.
Our next step is to launch the most ambitious fundraising campaign in our history. It will be a transformational effort to ensure our children receive the world-class care they deserve, in a space built just for them. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape pediatric health in Alberta and beyond.
It will take all of us, donors, champions and community leaders, to bring this vision to life. But I know we can. The stories in this report prove what is possible when we come together for kids. The new Stollery will carry those stories forward and create thousands more.
Thank you for believing in better and for standing with us as we build a stronger, healthier future for every child.
With gratitude and determination,
Kevin McKee Chair Board of Trustees

Committed funds fiscal 2025
Why is the Foundation holding donor dollars for the Hospital?
We establish our funding priorities annually, guided by the evolving needs identified across our growing Stollery network of care.
As of March 31, 2025, we are holding $61.7 million (2024 – $55.2 million) in internally committed and externally restricted funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta. These funds support our four key priorities for advancing children’s physical and mental health: equipment and facilities, programs, training and research.
This includes $21.0 million approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees for fiscal 2026 funding priorities (2024$20.7 million for fiscal 2025).
Delays in spending by our partner organizations, to whom we grant funds, can occur for various reasons. For instance, infrastructure project delays can postpone equipment purchases, program launches and research activities. As well, in some cases, the Hospital requires additional time to test and evaluate equipment to ensure that the Foundation supports only the highest-quality, most appropriate technology for children’s health care.
As of March 31, 2025, we are also holding $6.4 million (2024 – $6.5 million) in externally restricted funds. These are donor-directed gifts designated for specific purposes that fall outside the scope of board-approved funding priorities.
