County Commissioner’s Ramble Well, hold on to your hats! September, the crazy month has certainly been that! We have crammed a lot of last minute summer activities in, held meetings and been planning our diaries for next year’s events. What a rollercoaster! September saw many Scouters from South Yorkshire gather at Gilwell Park for the Reunion and again we were blessed with good weather. The next Wednesday saw the County AGM being held at Hesley Wood and the next weekend saw the National AGM being held at BP House.
if you are intending to take part please get in touch as soon as possible to give us a feel of the numbers coming. We also have the opportunity to offer groups activities on evenings at Hesley up until Christmas so if you would like to take part in these, some on offer are: Climbing, The Cube, Orienteering and all being well – Crate Stack (floodlighting will be in place). We hope to employ one or two activity staff for this and with at least one weeks notice these activities should now be available.
The end of September saw a County Information Weekend for all leaders so as a team we have had a full month and many thanks to all those involved in making these events a success. We also have had the tickets and cast auditions go live for Northern Lights so if you have not yet looked please go to www.northernlights2011.org.uk and find out all that is happening in our `Showcase of Scouting’. I would also encourage everyone to promote this as we are the Host County for this event.
What a great weekend. Very good feedback from those who attended. Some people have asked for this to be done two or three times a year!!
We also have spooktacular coming up and Winter Wonderland . The organising teams are busy planning them both and
The science base was particularly fascinating to all ages that attended, making `plastic milk’, ‘lava lamps’ and `Cornflour slime’
Lots of good information, workshops and games so all those who missed out certainly missed a good weekend.
Rosys A very BIG THANK YOU to all those who gave time over the weekend to put on sessions for 50 people.

appointment. It is the leaders responsibility to ensure that all these three are in place for when their role review is done. First Response dates are currently not included. These will be published at the end of October. South Yorkshire Jamboree Unit The Unit have had a busy few months. Thank you to everyone that bought a raffle ticket for the signed Bear Grylls book or had a go on the tombola at the County AGM. The Unit held its first training camp in the middle of September at Squirrel Wood and we all had a fantastic weekend despite the rain on Sunday! Six Unit members assisted with the flag / medal ceremonies at the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating at Ice Sheffield on the 1st and 2nd October. The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating is a series of international invitational junior level competitions organised by the International Skating Union. Junior figure skaters compete in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating and ice dancing. Over the next few weekends, we are bag packing at various supermarkets across South Yorkshire to raise Unit funds. The Unit has been lucky enough to be made one of Waitrose (Eccelesall Road, Sheffield) three charities of the month for October. This means that every shopper gets a green token and then October 2010
Rosys chooses which one of the three nominated charity box's to put it in and then we get a cut of the £1000 at the end of the month depending on how many green tokens we get in our box! So if you shop in Waitrose or know anyone that does, please spread the word to put the token in our charity box!
We aim to celebrate the best of Scouting in the North East by showcasing what we do, why we do it and the fantastic opportunities that we give to young people. We want to encourage people – young and old alike - to join us by inspiring more people to help us deliver the best. We will update our image by showing the region the excellent scouting which is already happening week by week in a spectacular, two and a half hour, interactive extravaganza of competition and fun. Visit www.northernlights2011.org.uk to find out how to become a cast member, help backstage, become a sponsor, or book tickets to enjoy the event. Please note that due to the VAT increase coming into effect in the New Year, ticket prices will rise – make your bookings now to avoid this increase.

Helen Pine would like to invite Sheffield Scout groups to take part in the first SAFE@LAST Sheffield BIG Sleepout, which is taking place on Friday 22nd October at Meadowhall Shopping Centre. The BIG Sleepout is a great teamwork exercise, with the added benefit that the funds raised will go towards supporting local young people. We welcome any help or support you are able to provide. I am not sure how familiar you are with our charity so please allow me to give you a brief outline of the work we do. According to the Safe on the Streets research team, Still Running; 1 in 9 children under 16 years of age runs away or is thrown out and spends at least one night away from home. SAFE@LAST work with young people in Sheffield and across South Yorkshire who have run away from, or have been thrown out of, the place where they usually live – or are at risk of doing so. We are proud to be unique in the services we operate, including the SAFEplace refuge, which is the ONLY facility in England providing Refuge Accommodation for children and young people under the age of 16. 59% of young people under 16 who run away, do so again. Of the young people that SAFE@LAST work with this number has been reduced to under 5%.
Rosys SAFE@LAST depends very heavily on voluntary income raised at fundraisers and the valuable sponsorship of responsible businesses. We could not deliver the work we do without the support of those who help us to raise awareness of the trusted services we provide. Our passion drives everything we do, with our staff force mainly compiled of a dedicated team of volunteers.
Bill Gates receives Silver Buffalo Boy Scout award
SAFE@LAST piloted the ‘Rotherham Big Sleep Out’ in 2007 with great success. Last year nearly 200 people slept rough at Parkgate Shopping Centre, raising a whopping £21000 - the biggest success yet.
Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has been awarded the Silver Buffalo, the highest Boy Scout honour in the US, for his services to youth.
If you are unable to participate or lend
The accolade is for Mr Gates' work both at Microsoft and for his humanitarian work through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Mr Gates was a member of the scouts in the 1960s and 1970s in Seattle. If you wish to read more go to: www.bbc.co.uk/news/1131C
your support to this event, please display a poster and/or pass this information on to someone who might be interested. Whatever you can do to raise the profile of this event would be greatly appreciated. Be assured that your involvement will make a real difference to the service we can provide for young people in our region, and that every penny raised will be put to very good use.
