September 29, 2009
Date Line: Hong Kong
US Stocks rallied Monday and ended a 3 day losing streak
Re-cap of the US Stock Market Action for September 28, 2009 With Monday's gains, the DJIA held an advance of about 16% so far this Q, making it the best period since the Q-4 Y 1998. M&A was in the headlights as several deals were announced and investors are betting more will follow. The DJIA charged North 124.17 pts, or 1.28%, closing the session at 9,789.36, the S&P 500 gained 18.60 pts, or 1.78%, to close at 1,062.98, and the leading NAS tallied up a handsome + 39.82 pts, or 1.90%, to end the day at 2,130.74. Q-3 ends Wednesday may cause some volatility as fund managers engage in what is known as "window dressing", i.e. they sell laggards and buy performers to dress up portfolios at a Q's close. Apple Inc rose 2.1% to US$186.15/shr after China Unicom said it would sell Apple's iPhone in China, starting in October. France Telecom's Orange also said it would sell the product later this year. Apple provided the NAS' top boost. Volume and Breadth: Trade was light with only about 979.3M/shr changing hands on the NYSE, compared with last year's estimated daily average of 1.49B/shrs, and on the NAS, about 1.92b/shrs traded, below last year's daily average of 2.28b/shrs. Advancers outnumbered decliners by a ratio of about 4 to 1 on the NYSE, and on NAS, about 10 stocks rose for every seven that fell. Stocks to Watch Today Apple, Inc (APPL), General Electric Company (GE), Google Inc. (GOOG), Intel Corporation (INTC), and Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO).
