Welcome to the Department of Language Education

Welcome to Stockholm University and to the Department of Language Education Stockholm University, located in the capital of Sweden, is the region’s centre for higher education and research in the humanities, law, the natural and social sciences, and a focal for the work of leading international researchers. At the Department of Language Education we educate students who will teach from primary school to adult education. We also offer a doctoral programme in language education, in-service courses and commissioned courses as well as research within: • Teaching English and other Modern Languages • Teaching Swedish/Swedish as a Second Language • Reading and Writing Development • Multilingualism In addition the Department includes the following units: The Language Learning Resource Centre, Media Lab, The National Test of Swedish for Adult Immigrants, The National Centre for Swedish as a Second Language. These units participate, to some extent in our courses, and cooperate in administrative tasks. The department works closely together with several departments spanning over all the faculties at Stockholm University:

Teacher Education Programmes The programmes offered are innovative and challenging. They prepare and qualify teachers for the real demands of working life and are based on and closely associated with our research. Courses and programmes In addition to Master’s Programmes taught in English at Stockholm University, there are several hundreds of courses and programmes in English and Swedish, ranging from 7.5 ECTS to 30 ECTS open to incoming students. Go to to find out more.
