Quality of light We’ve carefully studied our optics to produce an attractive, well controlled beam with a tight field angle and minimal spill.

14

15

The science behind our beautiful light beams With an emphasis on visual quality, Lumenalpha optics ensure smooth, even beam distributions with exceptional optical control

Beam angle

• Bright in the centre • Gradual fade out with no sudden step or ‘fried egg’ appearance • Soft, smooth edge • No striations • Even colour – no brownish ‘halo’

Precision optics for total control

Field angle

Total internal reflection (TIR)

Lumenpulse’s clear polymer LED lenses harness the power of total internal reflection (TIR) to direct light precisely where it’s needed. Unlike reflectors, which allow a lot of light to spill out creating a wider field angle, our TIR optics capture and control all the light.

Know your angles No two light beams are quite the same. Even light sources that claim to have the same beam angle can look very different in practice.

All light passes through optic No light spill or glare Increased efficiency and visual comfort

16

Beam angle is the angle at which the luminous intensity of a light source falls to 50% of the maximum. Beam angle is a useful measure of where most of your light is going, but it doesn’t tell you how wide the rest of the light will be spread. Field angle is the angle at which luminous intensity falls to 10% of the maximum. In other words, pretty much all of your light falls within this angle.

17

Performance Lumenalpha downlights and spotlights surpass conventional light sources in every measurable way. The range provides best-in-class performance and efficacy (up to 99 lm/W); with enhanced digital control and dimmability; longterm energy and maintenance savings (L70 at 225,000 hours); high-output capabilities; and exceptional colour rendering and consistency (within a 2-step MacAdam ellipse).

Why lifetime matters Lighting designers are used to planning ahead, because they know that LED lighting performance will gradually deteriorate over time. So, how much light will remain after five years? How many failures will there be?

Less than 5% light loss after 6 years

Lumenalpha offers an unbelievable new standard in LED lifetime performance. With an L95 of 55,000 hours, designers can be confident that their projects will maintain at least 95% of their initial light levels after six years of continuous use.

What is Radiant? Most LED light sources are designed to use the same range of colours as incandescent light sources – known as the black body curve. Our Radiant sources use the flexibility of LED to fine-tune the colour of the light so that whites appear cleaner and colours appear more vivid – especially reds, blues and pinks. The result? Objects appear brighter, bolder and more radiant.

Model Lumenalpha Clear Small Output 1300 lm Optic Asymmetric wallwash Spacing 120 cm Setback 60 cm Wall height 2.4 m

Asymmetric wallwash Wallwashing adds emphasis to vertical surfaces, making spaces feel larger and more spacious while increasing visual comfort. The technique is also useful to draw attention to shelving and walls in retail or exhibition spaces.

Design tip To light walls evenly, the distance of the luminaire from the wall should be about one quarter of the room height. For best uniformity, spacing between luminaires should be about twice the distance from the wall or slightly less.

54

55

Model Lumenalpha Multi 4 Output 2000 lm Beam angle 10°

Accent lighting 10° Using narrow beams of light, accent lighting creates contrast, helping to focus attention, highlight special features and heighten drama. To create visual impact, accent lighting should be at least three times brighter than the surrounding area. More dramatic accent lighting may require contrast ratios of 5:1 or greater.

Design tip In retail and restaurant spaces where furniture layouts are likely to change, it is a good idea to use a downlight or spotlight with a degree of adjustability to make sure the lighting can remain flexible.

Design tip Artworks and displays are best illuminated by striking the surface with light at a 30-degree angle. This prevents the viewer from casting shadows onto the artwork and seeing reflections in the glass.

Tighter beams can be used to direct more light to the ground as well as to light tall elements in the space, emphasizing the height of a room.

Design tip Keep in mind the scale of the room – a small 50 mm luminaire may have enough output for the task, but not the right scale for the space.

Grazing Grazing uses shadows to accentuate the details and bring out the character in textured surfaces such as brick and stone. This technique can also be used to detect surface blemishes. So be careful which wall you select!

Rule of thumb Grazing implies that the light source is positioned close to the lit surface. Generally, a 10 to 15 cm setback is recommended, with 15 cm to 50 cm spacing between luminaires.
