Lucerne – The city. The lake. The mountains. Lucerne is Switzerland: The City. The Lake. The Mountains. Whatever you expect from a unique city, Lucerne will not disappoint you. The avant-garde, in the form of the futuristic KKL Luzern designed by Jean Nouvel, is just as at home here as historic sights which have survived for centuries. The museums, theatres and festivals make Lucerne a city of culture, which elegantly holds its own amongst traditions and trends. Immerse yourself in this town, enjoy the magnificent landscape, stroll along the quays and don’t be surprised when you feel you never want to leave. Lucerne’s charm is legendary. And we extend a warm welcome to you. Marcel Perren Managing Director Lucerne Tourism Ltd.

Lucerne à la carte

Lucerne à la carte Classic city walking tour Discovering Lucerne on foot is much more than “just” a tour! Stroll around the city and admire its trademark Chapel Bridge and octagonal Water Tower. Along with the Spreuer Bridge and the Musegg Wall with its nine towers, they used to form part of the city’s ancient fortifications. Our two-hour tour takes in a host of other attractions including the cutting edge KKL Luzern, culture and convention centre, and the Old Town’s squares and historic façades. Saunter with your expert guide through the Old Town’s narrow lanes while you learn interesting, humorous and true facts about Lucerne’s history, churches, bridges, balconies, alleys, towers and squares. The city looks forward to welcoming you!

Guided city walk CHF 210 / ! 150 (max. 25 persons per group) Duration approx. 2 hours

A stroll through Lucerne’s Middle Ages Experience the early beginnings of Lucerne. With bells marking the daily routine, the citizens would swear an annual oath of allegiance and craftsmen ply their trade in the alleys; towers, bridges and walls were erected, religious orders established themselves and mercenaries and tradesmen shaped the city. Encounter history face-to-face on our guided tours of the city. Women in medieval costumes bring the past to life, with its smells, sights, sounds and sensations.

Guided tour CHF 260 / ! 185 (max. 25 persons per group) Duration 2 hours

Various themes on request. Ideal for clubs, societies, families, schools.

Brief respite in Lucerne Don’t worry, we won’t put you in the pillory, but you will have to allow us to lead you in chains into the prison. Come with us on a journey back in time through the dark centuries in Lucerne and experience at first hand the history of crime and punishment at the original places where sentences were carried out. Our tour guide will explain the manner and customs of punishment and penalties to you and will, temporarily, incarcerate you in the medieval dungeon, the Water Tower. In addition we show you in the Historical Museum the guillotine ordered from Johann Büchler in May 1836. At a demonstration held in September of the same year the public witnessed the decapitation of a ram. You may extend your brief respite with an aperitif and guillotine punch in the Storchenbar. Visit to Water Tower when possible!

Guided tour incl. entrances CHF 280 / ! 200 (max. 25 persons per group) Guillotine punch With fresh bread, sliced Sbrinz cheese, olives CHF 9 / ! 6.40 per person Guillotine punch With fresh bread, sliced Sbrinz cheese, dried tomatoes and an assortment of cured meats CHF 16 / ! 8.40 per person Administrative charges CHF 30 / ! 21.40 Duration 2 hours

Façades tell stories Created for the love of colour and decoration, by commission or to express a message, painted façades date back to the 1513 chronicles of Diebold Schilling. With fresh eyes, take a stroll past the buildings and let our city guide tell you about the origin of the paintings as well as the history of the artists and homeowners. The tour covers everything from monochromatic techniques to American-style street art, from Seraphin Weingartner to Hans Erni as well as the campaign to keep Lucerne’s buildings free of vandalism. Façades tell us fascinating stories about traditions, celebrations, residents’ professions and family experiences. Come along and discover another layer of Lucerne!

Guided tour CHF 210 / ! 150 (max. 25 per group) Duration approx. 1.5 hours

Various themes on request.

Lucerne à la carte

Lucerne’s fortification – the Musegg Wall The 14th century was a turbulent time of power struggles. The Habsburgers, who later became Europe’s most powerful rulers, were especially active in their efforts to expand their territory. Lucerne — which had declared independence from Habsburg and joined the Swiss Federation in 1332 — was still important to the Habsburgers. The Battle of Sempach in 1386 was a major event in the struggle between the Habsburgers and the Swiss. The Musegg Wall, built between 1370 and 1442, is part of the historical city fortification that once had 30 towers. What remains of the wall today is 870 metres long, nine metres tall (on average) and 1.5 metres thick. There are now nine towers, four of which are open to the public during the summer months. Visitors can also walk along the top of the wall. From here there is an impressive view of the city, the lake and the Alpine panorama. This tour of the wall includes a trip back in time to learn about Lucerne’s history in the Middle Ages. The guide will also explain how the wall was restored without damaging its appearance or harming the rare plants and animals that live near this national landmark.

Guided tour CHF 250 / ! 179 (max. 25 persons per group) CHF 40 will go toward the maintenance of the Musegg Wall Duration 1.5–2 hours

Pine boughs and bright lights Get caught up in the mysteries of the Christ Child and Santa Claus on our Christmas stroll through Lucerne. As you ramble through the city of lights, you will learn how pine trees found their way into our living rooms, since when Advent calendars have helped shorten the days until Christmas and who hangs the holiday lights above our alleyways. You will also hear meaningful and funny stories of Lucerne’s December customs. Not to be missed: a stroll through the Christmas market and a look at the life-sized nativity scene. We’ll help you shorten the wait until Christmas!

Lucerne and wine That wine has always been a great tradition in Lucerne is evident from the name of one of the town’s most important market squares, namely the Wine Market. The town’s population could enjoy not only Lucerne – and Swiss wines but also international vintages. The trading route over the Gotthard saw a brisk trade with Italy in particular. After the 1.5-hour city stroll, you make a stop at the fine VOM FASS-shop on the Franziskaner Square. You have a short stay in the Liebenau’s House, a Late Gothic building from the first half of the 16th century. There is a fascinating presentation of more than 50 different oil and vinegar specialities for the epicure and passionate cook – the world of quality cuisine. In daily use also oil and vinegar create variety in the planning of meals. Test and enjoy by dipping small pieces of bread into a carefully chosen selection. Guide meals: For tours including snacks/meals, the cost of guide’s meal (including beverages) is charged to the client.

City walk with Lion Monument and Glacier Garden The Glacier Garden is a significant natural monument with its huge glacial potholes and erratic blocks from the Ice Age, fossilized shells and palm leaves from 20 million years ago. The potholes were uncovered by accident on November 2nd, 1872. In the “million year show” you will learn about the dramatic change from palmbeach to the world of glaciers. General Pfyffer’s 3D-alps-relief of Central Switzerland is considered as the worlds oldest large-scale landscape relief and a pioneering work of Swiss cartography. Come and follow us on a journey of discovery through 20 millions years of Lucerne!

City walk with Lion Monument and Bourbaki Panorama The Bourbaki Panorama by Edouard Castres is a testament to the public’s appetite for visual sensations. The huge circular painting, 10 meters in height, with a circumference of 112 meters, which dates from from 1881, is one of the most visually arresting works in the history of the media and, with its call to humanity, depicts an exceptional event in history. People in the 18th and 19th centuries were, as today, driven by a craving to be whisked away to foreign parts by the medium of the optical illusion. The purpose of the Panorama in those days was to amaze, inform and entertain at one and the same time. Why not immerse yourself in those winter days of 1871 and witness at first hand!
