The Hirschen complex includes six buildings that have been restored in their original style. Š R. Guntli
Travel back in time
Mr Schumacher, what is the difference between “old” and “historic”? In an “old” house, everything is in a mess. A “historic” hotel such as the Hirschen may be old in years, but it is well kept and shows pride in tradition.
Welcome to the Swiss Historic Hotels A long history and centuries-old charm – whether you choose a former palazzo, a venerable monastery or an architectural gem from the Belle Epoque, the long history and centuries-old charm of a Swiss Historic Hotel turn each stay into a journey into the past. The Hirschen guest house in Oberstammheim, for example, is a former manor house and dates from 1684. It has been a guest house since 1786. In these sympathetically restored buildings, guests feel as if they’ve been transported back in time, thanks to the old-world rooms with delightful details and original-style furniture. The Hirschen guest house is a cultural heritage site of national importance. Guests can also experience the past at other Swiss Historic Hotels. The service that guests receive, however, is definitely state-of-the-art.
Mirco Schumacher Your host at the Hirschen Oberstammheim
How did you and your wife end up at the Hirschen? Just by chance. An advert in the “Gastro Journal” piqued our curiosity. As soon as we arrived here, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the building. What can guests expect at your guest house? Historical surroundings with rooms that tell stories, where you’ll discover a host of fascinating details.
Travel through time. The 54 most beautiful historic hotels in Switzerland are brought together under the label Swiss Historic Hotels. To qualify, the hotel’s architecture must be of historical significance, while the rooms, lighting and furniture should all reflect the original style. The result is a wonderful experience in historic Switzerland.
To become a Swiss Historic Hotel, the main building must be at least 30 years old. The ornately decorated Hotel Meisser in Guarda was built in 1893.

Checked and recommended Swiss Historic Hotels meet the following criteria:
❦ Main building more than 30 years old
❦ Hospitality business established over a representative time span
❦ Historic atmosphere and significance of architecture
❦ Rooms, lighting and furniture primarily based on the historic original
❦ Structural changes respect conservation requirements

Herbs with style The Wartegg castle hotel moves to the rhythm of the lunar calendar.
From palaces to manor houses and Art Nouveau gems, the Swiss Historic Hotels are the crown jewels of Switzerland and take their guests on a journey through time. In the organic castle hotel Wartegg in Rorschacherberg, this journey leads to an enchanted herb garden. Text: Matthias Mächler  Photos: Giglio Pasqua, Switzerland Tourism
The castle park is a protected national garden and a tranquil spot ideal for sharing a moment or two with others. The garden was created in 1860 by the Duchess of Parma.
Wartegg herb drink
Sunny fresh: the house drink can be enjoyed with or without alcohol. For one jug: fresh herbs such as lavender mint, southernwood, lemon balm and sage 1 l Organic apple juice 1 Freshly squeezed orange 100 ml Lavender syrup Orange slices and edible flowers for decoration
Preparation Tie the herbs in a bundle with string and let them marinate overnight in apple juice. Take out the bundle and add orange juice and syrup. Add ice, orange slices and edible flowers before serving.
Approximately 500 types of herbs and vegetables are grown in line with the principles of anthroposophy, which requires them to be free of chemicals and tended by hand.
The herbs are always picked after the morning dew, when their invigorating power is the most intense.
It’s enough to make you smile: the restaurant is considered to be one of the most innovative in the region and a benchmark for organic cooking in Switzerland – and what is its showpiece? A salad! Not just any salad, of course. “Salad 14” combines 14 vitalising herbs that work in harmony with each other. 32
