WAYS TO THE ENGADIN By car Road connections are excellent. From within Switzerland, drive via Chur (over the Julier Pass or Albula Pass), via Davos (over the Flüela Pass) or via Klosters (using the car-transporter rail service through the Vereina Tunnel; trains run every half hour). From Germany and Austria, you can also travel directly via Landeck. From Italy, drive via the Maloja Pass, Bernina Pass or Ofen Pass. The line through the Albula valley into the Engadin, with its spiral tunnels and giddy viaducts, is one of the most scenic and spectacular in Europe; together with the Bernina line, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2008. The Albula Tunnel is now over 110 years old. A new, parallel tunnel is being excavated over the coming years, only marginally affecting traffic. The RhB is also converting St. Moritz station into an attractive hub for public transport. By plane Engadin St. Moritz is home to the highest European airport that can accommodate direct international flights including customs clearance. Dedicated customs facilities at Engadin Airport allow for both Schengen and nonSchengen arrivals, permitting direct flights from throughout the Schengen zone and beyond. The introduction of new flight approach procedures will broaden landing options for jets in the future. Airport transfers Minibus transfers can be arranged directly to any hotel in Engadin St. Moritz and back from the airports of Zurich, Milan-Malpensa, Milan-Linate, Bergamo or Basel.

Tours for every taste The Engadin’s extensive trail network encompasses a multitude of options from beginner rides to advanced Alpine day tours. Among the more challenging itineraries is the Padella-Corviglia Panoramic Tour (no. 672), which begins on the Piz Nair and leads below the crags of Trais Fluors (“The Three Flowers”) to Alp Muntatsch and on to Samedan. Spectacular glacier scenery, meanwhile, is a feature of the Bernina Express Trail (no. 673). This fluid route leads from Pontresina to Morteratsch and up to the Bernina Pass, where your efforts are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Bernina massif and a thrilling descent into the Valposchiavo. A rather gentler ride is the valley route from Maloja to Zernez, which follows the River Inn and is ideal for electric bikes. Whether you opt for an athletic challenge or a leisurely ride, the restaurants with sun terraces along the route offer the chance to enjoy a relaxing break as you admire the breathtaking scenery.

Samedan golf course

Further information: /golfing

The history of golf in the Engadin began back in 1889 with the first golf course in mainland Europe, a 9-hole course laid out along Lake St. Moritz by Caspar Badrutt and a couple of British enthusiasts. This was followed in 1891 by the 9-hole course in what is now the Kulm Park. Today, the region’s courses, set in breathtaking mountain scenery and abounding in variety, thrill golfers from all over the world.

Samedan Golf Course This classic golf course is the oldest in Switzerland as well as one of the oldest in mainland Europe and celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2018. The 18-hole championship course (par 72) has a length of 6,217m (6,799 yards) and offers a thrilling challenge to golfers of all abilities. Features include spacious putting greens, approach area, partially covered driving range with 40 tees and superb technical aids including RoboGolfPro and TrackMan. A stylish clubhouse restaurant serves delicious meals and snacks. The Engadin Golf Center Academy provides individual and group tuition for all levels of player. Carts and trolleys can be hired; caddies are available on request.

Golf Special Three nights from CHF 410.– per person at one of the Engadin Golf Hotels (double room) including breakfast, 2 green fees for the 18-hole Samedan and/or Zuoz courses, and 1 green fee for the 9-hole Kulm Golf Course in St. Moritz.

Zuoz-Madulain Golf Course A couple of drives down the valley lies the much newer but equally impressive Zuoz-Madulain course, which opened in 2003. The 18-hole championship course (par 72) with a length of 6,007m (6,569 yards) enjoys an idyllic natural setting and promises a game full of variety. Facilities include a restaurant, pro shop, the Engadin Golf Center Academy providing individual and group tuition for players of all levels, spacious putting greens, approach area and a partially covered driving range with 40 tees. Carts and e-trolleys are available for hire. Kulm Golf Course St. Moritz The historic greens of the Kulm Park were designed by St. Moritz golf architect Mario Verdieri and the Kulm Hotel. The 9-hole Kulm Golf Course (par 27) charms players with its beautiful landscaped terrain, comprising short distances but offering challenges for golfers of all abilities. Novices can try their hand at the sport on the driving range, with its 16 tees, and on the pitching and putting greens; the Kulm Golf Academy provides individual and group tuition for beginners and more advanced players. The course itself is reserved for experienced golfers. After a game, enjoy mouth-watering refreshments at the attractive Chesa al Parc club restaurant. Margna Golf Academy The beautifully located practice facility at the Parkhotel Margna in Sils Baselgia, with its own 6-hole/par 3 academy golf course, offers experienced as well as novice golfers superb training opportunities in an exclusive setting. Attractions include a driving range with 14 tees and a chipping and putting green. Tee time reservations are not required: players simply pay a green fee at the reception of the Parkhotel Margna. Expert instruction is available at any time from seasoned PGA pros. golf-special-en

Mountaineering, climbing and hiking up high With numerous peaks topping 3,000m (10,000ft), the Engadin offers a thrilling variety of challenges for mountaineers. Even without ice axe and crampons you can enjoy spectacular high-altitude adventure: hiking boots and poles are all you need to explore the attractive Alpine routes with their distinctive whiteblue-white markings. More thrills are to be had at the via ferratas (fixed-cable climbs) of La Resgia and Piz Trovat, at the high-rope adventure course near Pontresina and on the 17 rock climbing walls, which are suitable for beginners and families as well as experienced climbers. In poor weather, the stylish Serlas Parc indoor climbing centre offers the chance to improve your skills, whatever your level of ability.

Nordic Walking This increasingly popular pursuit promises a full-body workout, thanks to the use of a pair of specially designed poles. The Engadin boasts a superb network of dedicated Nordic Walking trails – 225km (140 miles) in all, extending from Maloja to Zernez – allowing enthusiasts to explore the entire valley on foot.

Adventures on rivers and lakes Sailing Glorious wind conditions as well as spectacular mountain scenery make the lakes of the Engadin (1,800m/5,900ft above sea level) a paradise for sailors. Every day around noon, the Maloja wind builds up to force 3–6 and drops again only at sunset. Kitesurfing Enthusiasts of this graceful sport have long appreciated the superb conditions on Lake Silvaplana. The dependable Maloja wind makes for speeds of up to 80kph (50mph), with jumps as high as 30m (100ft) and flights lasting up to 20 seconds. Windsurfing and stand-up paddling The play of wind on water is a sight guaranteed to set the pulse of windsurfers racing as they catch their first glimpse of beautiful Lake Silvaplana. Mornings, before the wind has built up, are perfect for stand-up paddling: set off across the mirror-like surface of any of the Engadin lakes and enjoy the blissful tranquillity. Canoeing and kayaking The beautiful Engadin lakes, framed by breathtaking mountain scenery, are ideal for exploring at leisure by canoe. Thrill-seekers will enjoy the high-adrenalin alternative: a guided kayak trip along the wild River Inn. Swimming As well as the four big lakes along the main valley, the Engadin is home to many smaller lakes and pools hidden in the mountain forests, perfect for a refreshing dip on hot summer days. Among the most attractive are the Lägh da Cavloc near Maloja; the Lej Nair, whose surface mirrors the massif of the Piz Corvatsch; the Lej Marsch, just below the Lej Nair; the popular Lej da Staz; and the golf lakes outside Samedan.

Climate and weather in the Engadin The Engadin enjoys a dry, continental climate. This is characterised by low humidity and great variations in temperature between summer and winter and between day and night. In summer, on sunny days, the celebrated Maloja wind usually rises around midday, reaching speeds of about 40kph (25mph) – bring ing a refreshing coolness and providing excellent conditions for windsurfers, kitesurfers, sailors and glider pilots. The fresh mountain air also makes for a wholesome night’s rest: it is well worth sleeping with the windows open. The valley is famously sun-blessed, with the number of sunny days well above average. On those occasions when the sun chooses not to shine, the Engadin still offers plenty to do – remaining true to its reputation as an exciting holiday destination full of variety.

Glaciers in the Engadin The Morteratsch Glacier stretches around 6km (4 miles), making it the longest in the Engadin and the tenth-longest in Switzerland. About 160 years ago, during the Little Ice Age, it reached almost to where Morteratsch station stands today. The mighty lateral moraines piled high with rock debris, which show the extent of the glacier in 1850, still dominate the flanks of the valley.

The spectacular display of colours staged by the larch trees through the seasons is one of the striking features of the Engadin. The pale green shoots, golden pollen cones and red cone blossoms of spring give way in summer to luscious green cones and needles. In autumn, the turning needles blanket the valley in gold. Also distinctive is the Swiss stone pine or Arolla pine: superbly adapted to the harsh winter climate, it can grow to 1,000 years old. One of the Engadin’s oldest specimens stands on the slopes of Muottas da Schlarigna. These Swiss stone pines can withstand temperatures ranging from +40 to –47°C (+104 to –53°F), and so form the upper limits of the mountain forests. The tree also has medicinal properties: its scent has a relaxing, soothing effect on the body.

St. Moritz was originally renowned for its mineral springs, frequented for more than 3,000 years. In 1864, the St. Moritz hotelier Johannes Badrutt invented Alpine winter tourism here. Since then, the resort has staged two Olympic Winter Games (in 1928 and 1948) and numerous ski and bobsleigh world championships. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships took place in St. Moritz for the fifth time during the past winter season 2016/17. The summer season, too, offers a great variety of original sports and leisure activities as well as cultural attractions, seductive shopping and a packed calendar of world-class events. The superlative hotels and award-winning restaurants are also open throughout the summer. This attractive combination of nature, sports, culture, glamour and tranquillity, together with a beautiful lakeside location, makes St. Moritz the jewel in the Engadin’s crown.

St. Moritz is also famous worldwide for its “champagne climate” – not a reference to its champagne-drinking holiday visitors, but to the sparkling and invigorating climate of the Engadin. The geographical location on the southern side of the Alps enables St. Moritz and the whole Engadin to benefit from Italy’s warm climate in summer. The orientation of the broad valley, open to the south-west and

the sun, gives rise to wonderfully bright, warmth-giving sunshine. Summer temperatures are never oppressive, however, thanks to the refreshing Maloja wind that blows from the south-west in sunny weather, bringing a pleasant coolness. These specific climatic factors, together with the high altitude at 1,800m (5,900ft) and the beauty of the landscape, all have a stimulating effect on the body – in particular on respiration, circulation and blood formation. Sports enthusiasts and athletes appreciate the altitude-training possibilities here – for example for athletics, triathlon, mountain biking or cycle racing.

Celerina Tourist Information

Just because St. Moritz is its neighbour does not mean that Celerina stands in the former’s shadow; on the

contrary, this is the sunniest spot in the Engadin. Celerina’s shining attractions also include its charming

village centre, with its picturesque Engadin houses and its incomparable range of leisure activities. The

F +41 81 830 00 19

cable car will whisk you up to dizzying heights, with magnificent views all around. Mountain bikers will

celerina @

find challenging trails on the Corviglia, families a large playground high up at Marguns, and hikers an /en /

abundance of spectacular paths. But happiness can also be found in the wide expanses of the main

valley: such as in the fragrant larch forests along the path to Lake Staz, one of the most romantic places in the whole of the Engadin. Basking in the sunshine on a rocky spur is the village landmark, the 14th-century church of San Gian. In the evenings, too, Celerina lives up to its reputation for variety – perhaps with a jazz concert in an elegant hotel ballroom, or a party at a designer hotel. In August, the resort hosts the New Orleans Jazz Festival, and all year round there are restaurants that serve the spirit of the Engadin in the form of mouth-watering local cuisine.

HOTEL CRESTA PA L ACE The 4-star superior Hotel Cresta Palace enjoys a superb location in the heart of the village. The proximity to the mountain cableways makes this the ideal base for hiking, mountain biking and exploring. Via Maistra 75, 7505 Celerina, T +41 81 836 56 56 mail @,

Sils Tourist Information

This Engadin village of culture is world-famous: writers such as Nietzsche and Dürrenmatt, artists such as Beuys

CH-7514 Sils

and Chagall and musicians such as Strauss, Honegger and David Bowie were all inspired by the broad expanses

T +41 81 838 50 50

and the magical quality of light in Sils. With just 750 inhabitants, Sils is peaceful, relaxed and inviting. The

F +41 81 838 50 59

village lies idyllically between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana at the entrance to the car-free Val Fex, which visitors

sils @

can explore on a wonderfully romantic ride by horse-drawn carriage. Even a gentle stroll reveals the glories of /en /sils

this spacious landscape flooded with light, said to radiate a special energy. Those setting their sights higher find scenic and varied hiking and mountain biking trails up on Furtschellas, the local peak. Another way to enjoy the magnificent mountain landscape is on a trip on Europe’s highest-altitude scheduled boat service on Lake Sils. The village also charms guests with its weekly concerts by renowned artists, performances of classical music on Sunday afternoons, readings, talks, guided tours, theatre shows and exhibitions. During summer, Sils presents five cultural gems: the Sils Hesse Days; a series of recitals performed on a raft in a picturesque bay by the Chastè peninsula; the “Kunst- und LiteraTourtage” (“Sils art and literature days”); the Nietzsche Colloquium; and the “Resonanzen” international culture festival.

Bever Page 65

Bever Tourist Information

In the heart of the expansive, high valley of the Engadin, the charming village of Bever is a particularly

CH-7502 Bever

idyllic destination for families. Bever delights in letting visitors into its little poetic secrets – such as its

T +41 81 852 49 45

enchanting gardens, its quaint windows set deep into thick stone walls, and its abundance of flowers

F +41 81 852 49 17

adorning step railings and balcony balustrades. The mighty church tower rises towards the blue sky and

boldly strikes the time for the inhabitants – time that seems to pass at a more leisurely pace than else- /en /

where. The sun, too, seems particularly kind to this pretty little village. However, Bever’s most beautiful

stories are told just beyond the confines of the village – along the Fairy Trail through the Bever Valley. A path guides visitors through unspoilt nature from one fairy story to the next, all of them penned by Engadin women authors and brought to life by fascinating sculptures created by local artists. And – it is rumoured – if you are very quiet and listen very carefully, you might even hear the voice of a real-life gnome …

Madulain Tourist Information

Anyone looking for peace and quiet will find an oasis of tranquillity in Madulain. Although this village, the

CH-7523 Madulain

smallest in the Upper Engadin, has just 200 inhabitants, it nevertheless succeeds in captivating visitors in

T +41 81 854 11 71

a big way, thanks to its typical Engadin houses and its carefully fostered Romansh culture. Madulain enjoys

F +41 81 854 30 71

an idyllic setting by the River Inn, far removed from the rest of the world, basking in the sun. Inline skat-

ers, mountain bikers, horse riders and hikers enjoy a wide variety of trails. Although the village appears to /en /

be rather shy, it still knows how to impress visitors: such as with the Guardaval ruins dating from the 13th

century, the largest castle complex in the Upper Engadin. Or with an unforgettable visit to the legendary Escha hut, which stands at the foot of the Piz Kesch – proud, burnished by the sun and boasting spectacular views. Some of the most beautiful hikes pass this way. And if you were to believe the entries in the visitors’ book, the mountain hut certainly lives up to its claim of being “a haven in the storm”. A visit is more impressive still when the weather is fine – which is often the case, as the Upper Engadin enjoys levels of sunshine well above the average.

Zuoz Page 69

Zuoz Tourist Information

Zuoz is regarded as the most beautiful village in the whole of the Upper Engadin and enchants guests with its

intact and authentic Romansh atmosphere. Proud patrician buildings, such as the Chesa Planta, show off

T +41 81 854 15 10

their typical oriel windows and sgraffito wall decorations. Narrow alleys with numerous galleries lead visitors

F +41 81 854 33 34

on tours of discovery through the village’s rich past. Gourmets delight in original restaurants that interpret

traditional Engadin cuisine in a masterful way. In this tradition-conscious village, with its 1,400 inhabitants, /en /

time has not stood still, as shown by the attractive range of leisure and sports activities on offer – including

a beautiful 18-hole golf course, an attractive inline skating route and an abundance of hiking and biking trails. Those who love seductive aromas will find themselves in heaven at the highest-altitude coffee-roasting plant in Europe, and can also learn all about the history of coffee at the Caferama Badilatti. Families, meanwhile, feel at home in Zuoz simply because the resort, awarded the coveted “Family Destination” label, offers everything that children and families desire for all-round happy holidays.

In earlier times, it was the packhorse drivers who stopped off in S-chanf. These days, however, it is nature

lovers who come here to explore the beautiful Val Trupchun, which boasts the greatest abundance of game

T +41 81 854 22 55

in Europe. On their return from their excursions, visitors are treated to a real gem: the unspoilt historic vil-

lage centre of S-chanf, full of genuine, irresistible charm and breathing the spirit of a culture that is strongly /en /

rooted in its Romanic origins. Every second one of its 700 inhabitants speaks Romansh. They are proud, too,

of the pristine nature on the doorstep, so special that much of it is protected in a grand way – as the Swiss National Park. Although over recent decades the hamlet has considerably gained in importance as a tourist resort, S-chanf has still managed to preserve its relaxed sense of tradition. Consequently, visitors encounter authentic Engadin lifestyle wherever they go. Here this seems as natural as the landscape all around – which is best explored on foot, such as on a hike through the rugged Val Trupchun or along the ancient packhorse trail to Davos.

Terms of Contract and General Conditions Page 81

Terms of Contract and Conditions of Travel This brochure was compiled by the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation on behalf of the service providers – hotels, airlines, etc. – listed therein.

01 Scope of these Terms of Contract and Conditions of Travel These Terms of Contract and Conditions of Travel govern the legal relationship between you and the service provider insofar as your contractual partner does not present terms and conditions at the time of booking. Unless expressly specified otherwise at the time of booking, your contract will be with the companies providing services, even if you place your booking through the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation. In such cases, the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation acts merely as an agent between you and the service provider; your contract is directly with the provider of the service booked.

02 Conclusion of contract and services provided Your contract with the service provider becomes legally binding when the booking office unconditionally confirms your booking. If the same booking office arranges other services and packages for you that are not booked from a publication of the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation, these Terms of Contract and Conditions of Travel shall not apply. The services provided will be as specified in the booking confirmation and in the details provided of the service on offer. Unless stated otherwise in the product description, your activity will begin at the location specified in the contract.

03 Prices and terms of payment All prices are quoted in Swiss francs and are to be paid in Swiss francs. Unless otherwise agreed in your booking or in the booking confirmation, the price of your trip shall be payable in full upon booking. If the price is not paid in full by the date due, your contractual partner shall be entitled to withhold services, to withdraw from the contract and to demand the cancellation costs listed in paragraph 05. Note that if you book your trip through a different booking office such as a travel agent, this booking office may make additional charges for advice, reservations, etc.

04 Price and programme changes The service providers and the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation are entitled to change the details of services and prices before a contract is signed. You will be informed of this at the time of booking. After the contract has been signed, prices can be increased up to three weeks prior to the beginning of your trip if the transport or accommodation costs, the charges for certain services, or the exchange rate have increased.

Changes to the programme and scope of services may also arise owing to unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances. Should any of the essential features of your trip change considerably and if you cannot be offered an appropriate alternative, you have the right to cancel your booking. In these circumstances, price increases of more than 10% count as a considerable change. Unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances may necessitate a change of programme even after your trip has commenced. Your service provider will endeavour to provide appropriate alternatives in such cases. The Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation will not refund any services not delivered and accepts no liability for programme changes.

05 Changes or cancellations requested by you If you wish to change your booking or to cancel your trip, you must notify the booking office directly. Any travel documents you have already received must be returned to the booking office at the same time. A service charge of CHF 60.– per person, max. CHF 120.– per order, will be levied for cancellations and changes (affecting names of travellers, dates, accommodation or additional services, etc.). If you cancel your trip or change your booking (name, date, accommodation, additional services, etc.) less than 31 days prior to departure, you will also be charged, in addition to any processing fee, for the following costs as a percentage of the total cost of your trip: • 30 to 15 days before departure 30% of the package price • 14 to 8 days before departure 50% of the package price • 7 to 1 days before departure 80% of the package price • on the day of departure and in the event of no-show 100% of the package price The critical date is that on which the booking office receives notice of your intentions; if that is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the next working day shall apply.

06 Late arrival or early departure of your own accord You are responsible for arriving on time. Should you arrive late, you cannot claim a refund for any services you have missed owing to your late arrival. Should you depart early, your expenses will not be refunded.

Early departure or exclusion occasioned by the service provider The service provider is entitled to end the service/trip prematurely in the event of unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances that would render fulfilment of contract impossible, considerably more difficult or dangerous for those taking part. If no alternative is possible, the service provider shall be exempted from its obligation to fulfil the contract. Your claim to a refund in such cases shall be limited to unjust enrichment. The service provider can exclude participants from the trip if their actions or omissions justify such a step. In such a case, the cost of the package shall still be due in full and there shall be no refund for services not received. Any claims for compensation are excluded.

08 Liability The Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation and the service providers accept no liability, to the extent provided for by law, for slight negligence on their own part or that of their agents. No liability is accepted for loss of, or damage to, valuables, cameras/camcorders etc., fur coats or other expensive items of clothing, mobile phones, credit cards, cash and other valuable objects or for unlawful use of the same. For packages, liability for anything other than personal injury shall be limited to twice the cost of the package. The limitations to liability specified in paragraphs 04 to 07 also apply.

09 Travel insurance Participants are strongly advised to take out travel insurance to provide cover for cancellation or early departure, incl. accident or sickness.

10 Applicable law and jurisdiction The contract between you and the service providers or the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation is governed exclusively by Swiss law. Exclusive place of jurisdiction for any disputes arising will be St. Moritz, Switzerland.
