Neighbourhood Development Plan The objective of the Neighbourhood Development Plan is to provide a clear, legally binding statement of local requirements for the development of the Parishes. It is, therefore, important that it clearly defines the environment, facilities and amenities that exist today; what local people want to see in the future; and the plans and controls that are to be put in place to achieve it.

The eight Working Groups covering environment, infrastructure, housing needs, planning, business, leisure, communications and the vision of the future have completed the initial task of gathering the baseline data required to support the Plan and to underpin a detailed questionnaire later this year that every resident will be encouraged to answer.

The Groups have identified key issues with regard to local matters including housing needs; style, size mix and location of new housing; access roads and parking; businesses; development of tourism; maintenance and improvement of the natural environment; and education and leisure facilities.

Local residents’ views on these issues will greatly assist in the next steps towards generating the Plan and ensure that it reflects the needs and expectations of the community.

A Residents Consultation Event to be held in the Perceval

Institute from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday May 18th and Monday May 20th provides an opportunity for all to learn more about Neighbourhood Development Plans and to express any views, opinions or concerns regarding the development issues that the St Minver Parishes must address.

Consultation is key to a successful Plan. Without demonstrable involvement of the residents in its preparation, and ultimately agreement through a referendum, the Plan will fail and St Minver will be left with little protection against rampant development. The sooner concerns are made known the easier it will be to address them and achieve a Plan that the community will be delighted to support at the referendum.

Please do come along to the Consultation Event, meet the

team and let them know your views.

If you are about to become eligible to vote or are in further education, and see your future as continuing to live and work in the St Minver Parishes, your views are particularly important.

The Plan will shape how the local area develops over the next 20 years, the time when you will be trying to establish homes and careers in the local area.

St Minver Girl Wins First Goff Richards Memorial Award

Over the Easter weekend 70 musicians of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band held their Easter Course at Truro High School with guest conductor Paul Lovatt Cooper. The course concluded with a concert at St Michael’s Church, Newquay, when the Goff Richards Memorial Fund was awarded for the first time.

The recipient was Emily Howard of St Minver Silver Band. Emily is pictured with Mrs Sue Richards, wife of the late Goff Richards, who presented the award to Emily on behalf of the trustees of the fund. Goff also started his illustrious career with St Minver Silver Band.

The Goff Richards Memorial Award The Goff Richards Memorial Fund is a fund set up in the memory of Cornish composer Goff Richards.

Born in St Minver, Cornwall, he went on to become one of the world’s top composers and arrangers in brass, military and choral music. It is thought he can be credited with well over 1,000 works.

He realized the difficulty young Cornish musicians experience in being exposed to opportunities

others may have further up the country. Goff himself had to leave Cornwall to pursue his career.

With this in mind, the Goff Richards Memorial Fund has been set up to act as a resource for young people up to and including the age of 16 living and educated full-time in Cornwall by providing financial assistance.

At our recent meeting St Minver Cancer Research Fundraising Committee Annual General meeting held in March, Ann-Maree James, the Area Volunteer Manager for Cancer Research UK South West Region, thanked the committee and told us that CRUK were over the moon with our efforts for Paint Rock Pink which raised over £11,000 in October. She then went on to proudly present a framed certificate and flowers to Audrey Hocking for an amazing 52 years work on the fundraising committee. Kathy Hore also received thanks and flowers for 22 years of fund raising. Both will be sorely missed as sadly they will be leaving the committee. All their efforts over the years were much appreciated.

John Killingley was presented with a medal for 10 years service and kindly agreed to become Vice President to Joyce Bowden, newly elected President. After four years as our heroic Chairman Jane Bendall stepped down from office. Having inspired us for our Paint Rock Pink Campaign last year and all the other major events in our calendar she is a tough act to follow. Jane was presented with a ‘Tickled Pink’ rose and garden vouchers from the committee, together with grateful thanks for all her hard work. Gina Snelling was voted Chairman with Estelle Budden as her Vice.

Still 80 pence of every £1 made goes into research and 20p goes to raise more funds for future research. £4 is raised from every £1 invested.

With 40 clinical trials taking place in Cornwall, local people have access to potentially new treatments available. Chances of children surviving cancer has increased to 75% and survival rates have doubled in other areas. Half of all men with cancer are surviving and that would not be possible without research and our support. Together we are saving lives.

CRUK is the only UK charity to tackle different kinds of cancer.

CRUK has 100 fund raising groups in the South West – 2.2 million pounds will be raised in year 12/13 ending in March but unfortunately there is a shortfall of £100,000 for vital research. At Cancer Research UK we want to create more tomorrows – inform, prevent and take away fear. A big thank you to all our supporters.

Concerts at St Endellion Church The Joyful Company of Singers (JCS), under the musical direction of Peter Broadbent, are returning this spring to give a concert at St Endellion on Saturday May 4th. This year they will be performing choral gems from the late 19th and 20th centuries. They will also sing at the church service for the Feast Day of Saint Endelienta, Sung Eucharist at 11 am on Sunday May 5th. JCS regularly appears at all the UK’s major music festivals and we are delighted to welcome them back.

For the late spring bank holiday weekend we anticipate a very different style of concert at St Endellion from the talented musicians K’antu Ensemble on Saturday May 25th . Travel back in time with K’antu Ensemble to explore the sounds and songs of renaissance Europe. This prize-winning early music ensemble of multi-instrumentalists and singers evoke the vibrant musical traditions of Europe as far back as the 15th century, introducing audiences to the instruments and themes used in music of this time.

The group are also planning a workshop for young children on the Saturday morning to be held in the Village Hall in Port Isaac; look out for details on the Port Isaac Music Festival website.

The distinguished British violinist, Thomas Bowes will this summer become a pilgrim of that musical giant, JS Bach. Playing in places of worship from Scotland to Cornwall, he hopes that these concerts will raise a good deal of 18

money for local good causes as well as allowing the transcendent beauty of Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin to fully inhabit the atmosphere of these most compatible spaces.

From May 31st to June 4th, Tom is playing in five churches across Cornwall at Warleggan, Tresmeer, St Just in Roseland, St Mary’s Penzance and St Endellion.

Tom will be at St Endellion on Tuesday 4th June, the concert will be interwoven with readings by no less distinguished west country poets, Ann Gray and David Woolley.

Support Our Station Towards the end of 2012 all RNLI Fund Raising Committees were asked to support Head Quarter’s SOS campaign namely ‘Support Our Station’ during January and February 2013 and try and pay for the running of our station for a week. The RNLI is a charity and receives no government funding.

The average annual cost of running an All Weather Station such as Padstow is £215,000, that is £4,100 a week. The cost of an inshore Life Boat Station such as Rock is £90,000 a year, that is £1700 a week. Some concern has been expressed about the sum of £1,700 for Rock Station and the following may help to explain how this sum was arrived at. This does not mean that Rock Inshore Station actually costs that amount for a week but it is an overall average for all Inshore Lifeboats. In Rock money is generated by the solar panels and the RNLI Shop which other stations do not have.

The gross figures as stated include everything from Head Office down, operational service costs, kit (a dry suit with boots costs £249 for example), training, boats, equipment, maintenance, repairs, stores, fuel, premises, 20

On that Saturday Phoenix recorded an 8-0 win while St Minver were in action in their quarter final cup game against higher division high-flying opposition, AFC Bodmin. I am happy to report that St Minver were back to their best after a couple of weeks of lethargic displays and came out convincing winners to thump AFC Bodmin 5-1. We are now facing an exciting derby semi final (two legs) against top position second division side Padstow. Both legs will have been played by the time you read this.

In the league we hold on to top spot by the narrowest of margins over LC Phoenix due to our slightly better goal difference, however, we now have a game in hand. There were three cancellations of our away fixture with LC Phoenix earlier this year due to the control the college have over the pitch when the weather is bad. The latest one was in controversial circumstances when it was the only game in the whole of the Duchy League that day to be called off, we suspect they hadn’t got their full team out that day, however, they got away with it without punishment from the league.

The teams finally met when the match was scheduled on St Minver’s ground in March at Trewint Lane. In a keenly fought game, both defences were hard to break and in the end a score of 1-1 was a fair result. St Minver found themselves one down at half time after LC Phoenix scored directly from a free kick rashly given away just outside the area. In the second half St Minver worked hard to equalise but there were few real scoring opportunities.

Eventually Paul Dingle managed to squeeze in

a great strike in a crowded penalty area which pulled us level St Minver pressed hard for the last fifteen minutes with a succession of corners but couldn’t pierce a resolute Phoenix defence. Both sides are due to meet again at the end of April at Launceston College in a game which promises to be the season’s decider for top spot, but that has been postponed because we will have to play a cup match on that day.

We had a very successful run in the Cornwall Junior Cup earlier in the season dismissing several Premier division sides in the process and only beaten by an own goal in the last minute against Premier division leaders AFC St Austell. In the Duchy Cup we now have the Padstow semi final matches coming up and we will definitely give them a run for their money.

In the league we will be fighting all the way to try and end up in top spot. Last week’s win over Welcome Inn guarantees us of promotion anyway, so watch out the second division.

The second team have three games left in their first season back in the Duchy League and I am pleased to report that they are now in the fourth place and may even get promotion also. Much depends on how many teams drop out of the league from higher divisions and of course the results of the teams around them in the league table.

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season St Minver FC are a force again and we will be celebrating in style.

Our l on March 8th, turned out to somewhat of a surprise, We had expected to hear a talk from Andrew Lilley National Trust Regional Catering Manager. However Andrew has risen to higher levels – he is now a National Consultant with special responsibilities for catering. This was very much to his audience’s advantage as he was able to paint a wider picture on the whole concept of the National Trusts future plans His talk and the lively discussion afterwards left many with food for thought (sorry).

Rock Sailing & Water Ski Club Heads for Summer

After an Easter many will remember for all the wrong reasons, the Club hopes for a better summer. Over May Bank Holiday the annual Lark Open meeting will take place, an event that is popular with the class, attracting sailors from far and near, particularly the Midlands.

This will be the first of three opens taking place over May and June: the Fireball Open is at the end of the month to be followed in June by the ever-popular Peter Keeling Shrimper Week.

In 2012 the Shrimpers had a torrid time with heavy winds dominating the series, so they will be looking for an easier time this year.

On the social side, the Club will be hosting the CRUK Big Breakfast on May 25th, followed the same day by the Spring Club Supper.

St Minver Short Mat Bowls Club at Torquay We had fine, bright, dry, if somewhat chilly weather for our annual bowls trip to Torquay. We entered three teams of triples to play against teams from around the south of England in the Easter Tournament. On the first evening of friendly warm up matches, David Topliffe won a bottle of red wine for coming a close second.

During the hard fought daytime competitions one of our teams - Joan Rowell, Pat and Brian Crank got through to the championship competition but were knocked out in the quarter final having led the match until the last two ends.

David and Christine Gill and Allan Rathbone got through to the semi finals of the plate competition but where knocked out by the very competitive team that had already beaten our third team of Pearl Bickham, Janet Carter and David Topliffe.

We also played in the pairs competition with our team, David and Christine Gill, getting right through to a brilliant match in the semi-finals. Big success of the weekend was Allan Rathbone who was runner up in the singles - well done Allan.

This annual trip is very sociable with five non playing friends supporting us and exploring Torquay, its gardens and seafront.

In other news we are pleased to announce that after months of knock-out matches we have won the Northern Area Pairs competition - Janet Carter and David Topliffe are off to the county annual dinner at Newquay to collect their prize.

Soon we shall be starting to play in the summer league but it’s not all competition. Our twice weekly meetings at St Minver School are relaxed and friendly. We are always hoping that new members, young or old, will join us.

St Minver Probus Club

The Annual General Meeting of the St Minver Probus Club took place on March 13th. Chairman, Vic Thorman, opened the meeting and welcomed Martin Broadfoot.

Peter Collis presented the Treasurer’s annual report and accounts. The finances have shown little change from the previous year.

Roy Birchwood presented the Secretary’s annual report. He said how much he had enjoyed working with the Committee during the year and thanked Bill Nimmo, for once again offering to produce the Club Member’s Information booklet. The Ladies Lunch, held at Bowood in February, had been successful with positive feedback.

Vic Thorman, on retiring as Chairman, commented how much he had enjoyed his term of office. He thanked the members of the committee for all their hard work throughout the year. He felt it had been a successful year, with all the lunch speakers, well-attended coffee mornings and trips.

He introduced the new Chairman, Rob Lawrence, and presented him with the medallion of office and the gavel. Rob Lawrence presented Vic Thorman with the Past Chairman’s tie and badge in appreciation for his hard work and promised to do his best in keeping with the fine traditions of the Club.

He outlined the programme for the coming year and highlighted the next lunch date of April 17th, when we will be welcoming David Bartlett, a volunteer with the NCI Stepper Point lookout station.

The secretary proposed some changes to the Club Rules which were agreed by the members present.

The meeting then elected officers for the coming year.

Tony Priest was elected ViceChairman and Press Officer, and the secretary and treasurer were returned for another year.

Following the meeting, the members gathered in the garden for a photograph.

Daisy Brown Daisy is raising money to attend the Global Youth Leadership Programme in the USA and requests your help.

I’m Daisy Brown and I’m a 15 year old student at Wadebridge School. I live in Trebetherick and love doing Surf Life Saving just down the road at Polzeath Beach. I really enjoy competing for the club.

Recently I was selected to attend the Global Youth Leadership Programme which is a worldwide conference that takes place in either China (Beijing), the United States (Washington DC and New York) or in Europe (Vienna, Prague and Berlin). I chose to do the session taking place in the USA as it has more speech writing, debating and history related workshops, all of which I really enjoy.

It is a 10 day session which involves a variety of workshops to help improve all participants’ cultural awareness and leadership skills. During the session I will be doing many exciting, new things.

I spend the first part of the 10 days in Washington DC where I get the amazing opportunity to learn all about the ‘Diplomatic Community’, a ‘Global Village’ and the ‘Economics and International Law’. I do this by: having a briefing at the US Department of State and visiting Washington DC memorials, including the Lincoln Memorial. I also visit the United States Holocaust Museum, take part in leadership group meetings on different topics including ‘Cultural Exchange’ and ‘Preparation for Peace and Security’ and listen to speakers from the United Nations Security Council on ‘Maintaining World Order’.

I then learn about ‘Roots of U.S. Democracy’ with a tour of the historic district of Philadelphia before we proceed on to New York City where I experience the cultural side of New York City and a Commission meeting in relation with the Global Summit. I also have greetings

from, and a tour around the United Nations Headquarters along with a ‘National Delegations Rally’ and ‘Coalition Building and Speech Writing’.

After the 10 day session I get to spend a whole three days experiencing ‘The Urban Island of Manhattan’ and New York City. During these expeditions I journey to the top of the Empire State Building and visit the American Museum of Natural History. I also get to spend time in Soho, Times Square, Chelsea Piers (for bowling) and Central Park.

However this isn’t a low-cost trip and I am working hard to raise the money I need to go. I work at the Mowhay in Trebetherick and most of the money I earn this year will be going towards my trip. My family has helped me put on a cream tea where I raised over £400. Thank you very much to everybody who came! We will also be doing a pub quiz and bingo so look out for any advertising!

I will be writing an article upon my return where I will be able to describe how amazing the trip was.

Rumps Rescue Martha, Alan and Harry Cowderoy say Thank you!

It was mid afternoon November 20th - we were enjoying a stroll along the coastal path from Polzeath towards the Rumps. We decided, as we often do, to clamber down across the rocks to one of our favourite coves. Our son Harry reached the beach ahead of us, and my husband Alan who was in front of me. leant sideways to place his hand on a rock to steady himself. He lost his footing, and took a terrible tumble, initially falling about 15 feet, then somersaulting and bouncing from rock to rock finishing up on a ledge close to the beach (and, no, I didn’t push him!). Both Harry and I could only watch helplessly in disbelief as poor Alan hit the rocks.

Luckily the tide was out so Harry ran back across the beach to fetch water, something sweet to eat and a mobile phone.

Although Alan was conscious he was obviously in shock, saying he thought he could climb back to the coastal path, but he could not move his left leg and his right shoulder was painful. On contacting the emergency services we were connected to the coastguards office in Falmouth and the auxiliary rescue team were scrambled.

By this time it was dark and Ken in Falmouth had to relay our position (from my description) to the rescue services who arrived shortly thereafter in two vehicles blue lights flashing across Polzeath beach.

Whilst Harry stayed with Alan I climbed back to the coastal path and, following Ken’s instructions, waved my mobile around taking pictures with the flash to attract their attention - this took some time but it worked!

Men with torches on their heads scrambled around the rocks to us, arriving 26

with tripod lights fit for a film set, and the paramedic assessed the damage. He decided they could not carry the stretcher back across the rocks, so called in the RAF rescue helicopter. Meanwhile Alan was given a shot of morphine to ease the pain before they lifted him off the ledge and onto a stretcher - a difficult manoeuvre even with five men and the additional help of Harry.

A landing strip of torches and arc lights was made in the sand and the helicopter arrived with all lights glaring, circling above the small cove but lack of space made it impossible to land, so the RAF paramedic was winched down to the beach. After another shot of morphine Alan was transferred to a second inflatable stretcher, then winched up into the helicopter and whisked off to hospital.

Alan spent four weeks in Treliske before being transferred to a rehabilitation hospital near our home in West London.

Thankfully he has made a full recovery.

We recently re-visited the scene of the accident and appreciated how lucky he was to have only broken bones in his hip, shoulder and finger.

We have thanked everyone on Trauma Two Treliske, but we would like to thank all those cliff rescuers who came to our aid that day. I think Martin was the first to arrive, and I remember Tim the mussel farmer from Porthilly was there too, as well as Robert Harris who provided some transport. Also, the Port Isaac team was standing by on the cliff top in case Alan needed to be winched up the rocks.

There were many team members including the fantastic helicopter crew who worked tirelessly that day. Thanks to all of you.

Jean Matilda Higgins 1924 - 2013 Most of us all dread the day when our Mum is taken from us and as hard as that is to bear we have to try and focus on all the happy memories. Our dearest Mum passed away peacefully at St Julia’s Hospice Hayle after a relatively short illness.

So many of our friends envied us in having such a loving, hospitable Mum and a very close family.

The celebration of Mum’s life at St Minver Church on March 1st was without doubt a huge tribute to her. The church was packed with 50 family members together with friends and members of the various groups Mum was associated with. The love and happiness of Mum’s life resonated throughout.

Mum’s brother, Graham Bertinat, (having recently undergone major heart surgery) my son, James Reed, my husband Colin Kemp and my daughter Claire Mayle all spoke about Mum’s life and what she meant to us all. The greatest Mum, Grandmother, Nanny, Great Nanny, Auntie, Great Aunt, Sister, Sister-in-law and beloved companion of Len Walters.

Mum was a great artist, cook, story teller, performer with the Perceval Entertainers and the biggest practical joker ever. Trebetherick WI could write a book on Mum’s humour, she was forever disrupting the meetings by making those around her giggle like naughty school children with some funny comment she had made. I always remember her whispering things like ‘How can you do a flower arrangement in a winkle’ or who wants to have a bowl of knitted flowers on their sideboard?

Yes that was Mum even though she loved her WI and worked hard over the years as secretary and outings officer. The countless friends she

made and loved all the funny entertainment they put on for group meetings. I recall one occasion when my Dad was alive when she borrowed a plastic heron from the jumble sale and planted it in the garden. ‘Ken there is a poor injured heron in the front garden’ Dad went out armed with a dish of bread and milk cautiously approaching this large bird whilst Mum was hysterical in the doorway!

The past eight years were just a wonderful bonus for Mum as she met Len at the Senior Circle and took him under her wing.

I remember saying to her ‘I think that man fancies you as he has just asked you to dinner’, to which she replied ‘Don’t be so ridiculous.

He wouldn’t fancy me at 80 years of age’ Well he did and they spent many happy times with us in Falmouth, had two cruises and lots of other holidays. Not only that they became quite famous locally for their duets at the Perceval Institute.

family, friends, neighbours and naturally dear Len. We are so very grateful for the kindness shown to Mum in the past months of her declining health and to all who attended her funeral. The mountains of cards and generous donations to the hospice have all been a great comfort to us.

Thanks to everyone and hold on to all the happy memories of our darling Mum whom we miss so very much.

A Tribute to Jean Higgins It was with great sadness that we learnt of Jean’s death on February 12th Jean, with her partner in crime, Len, was a stalwart of our productions for many years and will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Possessing a wicked sense of humour, she loved to take part in comedy routines.

Jean had a good singing voice and her

duets with Len always received rapturous applause from the audience.

Jean believed in living life to the full; she never acknowledged her advancing years and certainly didn’t see any need to slow down because of it! We will miss you Jean – break a leg.

All’s Well at the School!

Dave Cantin, Headmaster It does seem a long while since I last had the opportunity to write for The Link! So much happens on a day to day basis in a primary school, I thought that I would simply share some of the highlights from recent months, starting with Christmas.

Competitions We have taken part in a number of interschool sporting competitions in recent weeks against our ‘cluster’ of Wadebridge schools. Our swimming team managed Christmas a very creditable second place at the annual swimming festival. Also attending the evening were Dr Kerry Bailey, an expert in child health and a representative from the Cornwall Healthy Schools’ team. Both gave fascinating talks.

The company employed to cook our school meals were on hand to answer any questions that parents might have about school dinners, and, along with Debbie Wheeler and Michaela Richards, helped our School Cookery Club to cook healthy pizzas in the school kitchen. Parents sampled the pizzas at the end of the evening and they were delicious!

New Equipment By the time you read this article we should have our new playground climbing frames installed which have been paid for by our wonderful PTA. Hopefully the weather will improve so that the children can make the most of the new equipment! We were also lucky enough to have received a very generous donation from an anonymous source which has allowed the project to go ahead. Our old equipment was condemned before Christmas.

PTA Events As I have mentioned the PTA, can I please draw your attention to two events that will be taking place in the near future – our Casino Night, which will be held at The Waterfront, Polzeath on Friday May 10th. Tickets will soon be available from the school office at £20 each, to include a curry buffet and ‘funny money’ for the casino tables.

Our annual ‘Fun Run’ and car boot sale will be taking place on Sunday May 19th. It would be wonderful to have a great turn out for the Fun Run this year as it is our 25th anniversary! More details will follow.

Cycling We will be holding an inter-school cycling event at St Minver School in April. For those of you who followed the GB track team in the London Olympics last year, each school will be riding against each other in a team of four in a ‘team pursuit’.

Nigel Wiggett of Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge has very generously agreed to supply all of the children with a bike free of charge for this event! Thank you Bridge Bike Hire.

Comic Relief We had a great day raising money for ‘Comic Relief’ in March. The theme of the day was ‘superheroes’. You may have noticed Superman and Wonder Woman holding up the traffic on Rock Road with collecting buckets. The children were resplendent on the day – some wearing their own spiderman, batman and superman costumes and some, very imaginatively, inventing their very own superheroes.

The children were encouraged to bring cakes in to sell at a cake sale after school.

We managed to raise a fantastic £425 for this very worthwhile cause.

The police ‘drop in’ The Emergency Services visited us for a day before the Easter holidays. The children learned a great deal about the work of the police and the coastguard.

the air! You can imagine how excited the children were. I do hope that the presence of the helicopter did not worry you!

Year 6’s Trip to London And finally, our Year 6 class have recently returned from a trip to London. As we have come to expect, the children conducted themselves beautifully. They received their first compliment about their manners from the conductor of the

train as we were pulling out of Bodmin Parkway Station!

“We Did London”

Every year the Year 6 class take a 2 night trip to London and we really do, do London… this year was no exception.

We started out on a very cold morning at Bodmin Parkway Station for our 8am departure to London. The teachers (a brave lot to volunteer to come); Mr Cantin, Mr Howard, Miss Thompson, Mrs Warne and Mrs Austin, were waiting for us. Good old’ Mr Austin and Mr Whitcombe had driven ahead with our bags.

The journey took 4 hours, we finally arrived at Paddington Station and Mr Howard swept us off to The Natural History Museum. We got split into groups and we all went away in different directions.

There were so many things to see and do. The highlight for most Lola Polson of us was the dinosaurs and interactive display showing how the human brain worked. We also enjoyed the creepie crawlies.

After the museum we walked around the West End and Trafalgar Square until we arrived at the trendy noodle bar Wagamamma for our Japanese supper. It was nice to finally sit down after our big day. The food was different but very yummy.

After supper we took a water taxi to Canary Wharf where our unusual accommodation was. We were staying in a boat on the River Thames called the Lord Amory. We really needed our sleep.

The next morning we were woken up early by Mr Whitcombe’s trumpet (yes, really a trumpet) and got ready for our day ahead, and it was going to be busy. We took the tube to the Houses of Parliament where we had a tour around the House of Commons. We were hoping to bump into the Prime Minister but instead we had a special meeting with Dan Rogerson, who is our MP. We asked him questions about things that affect us locally and nationally such as why is public transport so poor in Cornwall and why is illegal immigration able to happen?

From there we took a boat trip on The Thames and saw the buildings that line the River. We got off at The London Eye. The flight was really exciting and we saw the whole of London because we were so high up even though it was quite misty. If that wasn’t enough, we then went to The Tate Modern Art Gallery. We saw some really unusual art like very plain things, which we could do and make lots of money.

The last day was exciting for me because not only did I have another day in London, but it was also my birthday and we had cake for breakfast (I hope the parents don’t mind). We went to St Paul’s Cathedral and climbed the dome to the Whispering Gallery. The climb was really, really long. I went to the other side of the dome and the whole class whispered “Happy Birthday” to me.

That was great fun and a nice way to finish off London.

We arrived at Bodmin late in the evening and were all really pleased to Poppy Kearney see our mums and dads and to have a good sleep in our own beds.

Polzeath ‘Nippers’ Bring Home the Medals The ‘Nippers’ of Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club returned home triumphant from the Cornwall Stillwater Championships at St Ives. The group, ranging between 7 and 13 years, successfully competed in a range of individual and team events – gaining two golds, seven silvers and three bronze medals for the club.

Kyra Ducros, 13 years, bought home a sliver in the Tube Rescue with Jazz Harbour.

Brownies Plant Trees at Enigma Wood St Minver Brownies went to Enigma Woods, an 11 acre community project near St Wenn, to plant willow trees. Below are four accounts of the day in the children’s own words.

Bodieve Holiday Park. Then I met all my Brownie friends, after that we did the register, everyone was there. We hopped on the mini-bus when it

came . I sat next to Ellie, but it took a long time to get to Enigma Woods. But when we got there

we realised it wasn’t a real wood’s, yes it was a

field with trees that wasn’t fully grown I was very surprised but when we got closer I realised it was going to be a real wood’s. We had to get in pairs so I went with Ellie, we dug two each. My tree

numbers were 99 and 106. After everyone planted

their 4 trees we went and got our bags to have a snack, me and Ellie both ate our crisps when we

began to walk because we didn’t have time to sit down, we found lots of amazing things, like a

mini waterfall, bridges and when we looked over there was lots of rocks and places to hide. When we got to the 1st pond here was frog spawn but it was dead, so we went to the second pond it

had millions of frogspawn, and it was living. We carried on walking right around Enigma Woods,

it was very muddy there though my welly fell off and my socks got very very muddy. After a while

we got to the statue it had the number 8, 5 and 3 on it, after that we made our way to the mini bus

it drove us back to the Holiday Park and we went home.

On Monday in the half term we went to Enigma Wood to plant Willow trees. This is what we had to do, we had a Willow tree and we put it in the ground. Next we put a tube around it, then we had to put some small pieces of

Busy season for North Cornwall National Trust

At the time of writing, I’m wrapped up inside, waiting for the UK to throw off winter’s icy grip. Hopefully by the time you read this the seasons will have started behaving as they should and our patience will have been rewarded with a good dose of warmer weather!

Heading into May and June, a busy season for the National Trust, we’ll be getting stuck in to our annual tussle with the surging vegetation, keeping footpaths looking trim and tidy for all the walkers. Talking of walking, we have two guided walks open to all in May. The Archaeology of Rough Tor Sunday May 12 10am – 1.30pm Join the National Trust and professional archaeologist Peter Herring of English Heritage on a stunning walk across the iconic and mysterious Rough Tor. A Book Review by John Baxter

His Dark Lady

By Andrew G Langdon Published by Bantam Press £16.99 hard back Wadebridge Books Students of the Tudor period at ‘A’ level in the more traditional approach to ‘Modern’ history will be delighted to renew acquaintance with some familiar names in the Prologue to this fascinating work of fiction. The Earl of Leicester, favourite of Queen Elizabeth 1, Sir Francis Walsingham, her notorious spy-master, The Earl and Countess of Essex, The Spanish Ambassador, Mendoza, the Queen’s suitor Alencon, Duke of Anjou and the Queen herself , violent and unpredictable in temper and using her unwed (virginal?) state for effective political reasons.

From History to English Literature : the reader meets William Shakespeare immediately in Chapter One, followed quickly by the eminent actor and architect of the first English playhouse, James Burbage, in the setting of a performance on stage at The Cross Keys Inn in 1583. It is here that black skinned Lucy Morgan, one of the Queen’s Ladies in Waiting, makes an appearance in the crowd, sending a ‘flaming arrow’ to Shakespeare’s heart.

Followers of Victoria Lamb will know that Lucy first emerges in ‘The Queen’s Secret’ at Kenilworth attracting the attention of 11 year old Will Shakespeare and will reappear in the third novel to be published soon.

Victoria Lamb is hugely well qualified to write this substantial work of ‘historical fiction’. Daughter of the prolific novelist

Charlotte Lamb she used to live close to Kenilworth Castle where ‘The Queen’s Secret’ is set and now lives on Bodmin Moor. She studied English at Oxford as a mature student and became enthralled by Elizabethan and Jacobean playwrights. Her mother had already written an account of Shakespeare and his ‘Dark Lady’ and it seemed natural to Victoria that she should carry out her own exploration of the mysterious Dark Lady and her relationship

with Shakespeare.

The Booker Prize Winner, Hilary Mantel, has successfully demonstrated that the Tudor period is full of electrifyingly powerful characters, most notably the manipulative minister, Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII. Victoria Lamb has not (yet) achieved Mantel’s acclaim but she is equally aware of the richness of events and global turning points in Tudor history, given colour by the lavish textiles, spectacular set-piece banquets and intellectual vigour of the age.

The ‘Dark Lady’ in the title refers to the subject of Shakespeare‘s Sonnets, 127 – 154. There has been considerable peculation as to the identity of Shakespeare ‘black beauty’ but last year, Dr Duncan Salkeld, a Reader in Shakespearean studies, cited evidence that she might have been ‘Lucy Negro’, also known as ‘Black Luce’, an ardent whore who ran a brothel in Clerkenwell. Victoria Lamb acknowledges this in her note at the end of the book, but transfers Lucy to Queen Elizabeth’s court for the sake of the story. There is much that is familiar, and unpleasant, about Will’s relationship with Lucy….a lustful married man taking

advantage of a besotted virgin, who desperately hopes for marriage, before being crushed by Will’s adultery and later by the savage rape by the appalling John Twist.

There is much more to this book, however, than an unhappy romance. Set in the 1580s at the height of the ‘Popish Plots’ and the thorny question of the fate of Mary, Queen of Scots, it paints a bloody picture of intrigue, treachery, violence and retribution. The description of the execution of the Babington Conspirators is particularly chilling and very few of the male characters emerge with any credit.

An exception might be Lucy’s ‘guardian’, Master Goodluck (we never discover his first name),one of Walsingham’s spies who is fortunate to escape unspeakable torture, but even he displays astounding powers of dishonesty.

‘His Dark Lady’ will appeal to aficionados of Tudor history who will not be deterred by the licence the author has taken with some of the characters. It is clear that Lucy Morgan remains the central figure and it will be fascinating to see what fate Victoria Lamb has created for her in the next volume.

Something Fishy in Port Isaac Calum Greenhalgh

January and February are traditional slow months for inshore fishing on the North Cornish coast, with lots of skippers taking holidays or carrying out maintenance work on boat and equipment. Of the few who carried on fishing they only managed to do a handful of days.

The herring still seems to be making a comeback with a large shoal in and around the Camel estuary, arriving in late December into January with ‘shooters’1 in February. A couple of Port Isaac boats did well but the undisputed herring king was Boy Darren from Padstow. The herring was salted in for lobster bait to be used in the coming summer.

By the start of March four out of the six full time boats were making a start.

The season started with catches of good quality of the male ‘cock’ crab as most female ‘hen’ crabs are in poor condition from spawning in December and January.

We have seen good run of male Lobsters as the females are still carrying eggs and are illegal to keep in Cornish inshore waters as a conservation measure.

I have handed over the first eight berried2 hen lobsters of the season to the lobster hatchery as they make a start on rearing this year’s juveniles. The black egg on females (the eggs turn red then red/ green when they are about to be released) are kept in cooler water to extend the breeding season. Only as the water warms will the eggs mature.

The new research at the hatchery is looking at the number of eggs a Cornish lobster can carry - it has been done in other areas around the country but not

in the Cornish stocks. The hatchery had a single female with 36,000 eggs.

There’s no credible research on survival rates of eggs in the wild, even with genetic markers it would be impossible to catch and test every lobster from one brood.

Marine biologists talk about figures from to 10% at the most to as little as 0.05%.

However, 1% seems to be the most common number.

If only 0.1% survive then that single large hen could produce 36 lobsters per year, with 90% staying in a 20 mile radius and only 10% with wanderlust. There is still, unbelievably, a few fishermen who persist in keeping berried hens due to historical reasons or short term gain.

If you come across a berried hen in a fishmongers or restaurant you should send it back or refuse to buy it to protect the stock for the future of everybody. You can also contact IFCA (Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority) on 01736 336842 - the enforcement authority for the Cornish inshore waters.

Country Diary from Cobb Cottage Written and Illustrated by Joan Cockett

“Listen is an anagram of silent” - I caught the words on the radio as I left the dining room clearing the breakfast things. Well, so it is, and the words have remained with me, urging me to think about the implications. Today is a warm, sunny midMarch day (in spite of an adverse forecast) and I’m sitting in the porch, enjoying the sun. How silent is it?

I turn off Classic FM and listen. The distant hum of mowers (the first spring cut), an aeroplane gently buzzing around, someone chopping wood, and a robin, singing sweetly in a shrub nearby. Bang (a birdscarer) then the sound of a van driving down the lane - ladders rattling. Suddenly, an urgent shout, as somebody calls their dog on the footpath down the side of the field, and a bee buzzing on the winter jasmine. Two rabbits are eating grass on the lawn - I can’t say I can actually hear them. A car sounds its horn, a gardener next door whistles as he walks up the garden. The mowers cease – is the silence complete?

For 10 minutes it is almost silent, then the ‘phone rings - a cold call, which breaks my reverie.

Maybe complete silence doesn’t exist.

Today I can hear the sea gently, but sometimes it is a continuous roar. Cobb Cottage is probably one of the quietest places one could be; I shall continue to listen . . . the gate slams - something in the postbox?

Yesterday I picked two lemons from my little lemon tree - like figs they take two years to reach maturity. So these two, almost ripe, will finish ripening on the windowsill in the sun . The tree has 16 tiny lemons that will grow through this spring and summer reaching maturity early 2014. It seems a strange cycle. These two large lemons look fine, and should produce plenty of juice. The tree is hardy to -50 so even in this late date cold spell, the temperature has hardly dropped below freezing here.

There is something quite surreal about lemons in March in a Cornish garden; this was the inspiration for my rather bizarre illustration.

its creamy white flowers having a sweet scent. This is a magical time of year as daffodils, hellebores of all sorts, euphorbia and primroses fill the garden. The South African daisy, euryops, gives splashes of brilliant yellow, a forerunner of summer.

I was amused to come across a quotation from Thomas Fuller, writing in 1660, on the subject of tulips, for which there was a mania at the time. “What is this Toolip,” he writes”, a well-complexioned stink. . .ill favoured.” He goes on to assure us of his hatred. Last year my pots of tulips produced nothing - the slugs ate the lot.

Thomas Fuller would have been delighted.

However, this year I covered three pots with shower caps until the bulbs were 2 inches high and I’m now looking forward to masses of colour as they are about to bloom. Sorry, Thomas Fuller - my Toolips will be enjoyed.

In my last Country Diary, something went adrift in the printing*, leaving one paragraph incomplete. It was my thanks to the farm shop, for selling some lovely

alstromerias, which flowered for Christmas in shades of cream, mauve and pale yellow, and thank you to Watts Butchers for supplying perfect Christmas poultry and gammon. I hope the paragraph gets in this time! Better late than never.

When I next write my Country Diary, it will be late Spring, early Summer. Meanwhile, my little vase of periwinkle reminds me it is still early Spring.

While finishing this mission the boat was diverted by the Coastguard to help another kite surfer who was unable to relaunch his kite and was drifting out toward Gulland Rock. When the crew found him he was trying to swim back against the ebb tide. Because he was tired and cold he was making no progress against the tide which was taking him further out to sea.

Most of the surfer’s equipment was found but not the board which had drifted away from him and must have gone out to sea.

Open the Book: Seven Years of Tea Towels and Dressing Gowns Peter Coster In 2005 an initiative was started in St Minver Parish at St Michaels Church, by me, Lay Minister Peter Coster, to establish contact with the young generation, specifically at St Minver School. The initiative was given much needed structure by Jo Heydon, who suggested the Open The Book syllabus, which had been started by churches in Gloucester Diocese, and had gained approval by the then Department of Education for use in schools. We were held up until June 2006 by the need to obtain clearances from the Criminal Records Bureau, which was mandatory for entry into the school.

OTB is a series of stories illustrating various events taken from the Bible. These can be acted over about ten minutes. They are presented not as facts but for the children to consider for themselves, an important point. At the end we say a short prayer, and the children are told “if you want to make it your prayer, say Amen at the end”, but most actually join in.

Jo headed the team for some years, followed by Su Coster, and we are now about to embark on our eighth year. We have a team of up to a dozen people to call on, depending on the casting of a particular story, and we have a store of some fairly rudimentary props to help.

Some of the team are better actors than others, and we meet at the school at 9.30 on Monday mornings to hone our performance into something reasonably convincing. Fortunately most of the stories 52

do not require great exertion, since we are mainly two generations ahead of our audience! “Take up your bed and walk” is easier said than done at our ages.

The reaction of the children is very positive, and we have been backed solidly by the Head Teachers, Nick Lane and his successor Dave Cantin, together with their staff. In addition, Bishop Bill Ind and his successor, Bishop Tim Thornton, have visited the school, something appreciated both by the School and the Bishops. Bishop Bill heartily endorsed OTB, and it is now used by many more schools in the county. We try to involve the children in acting, and they are excellent. There are moments when it is necessary to keep a straight face, such as when Jo asked a group to be “lepers” for a particular story, and the children thought she said “leopards” and acted convincingly. Or when at a rough-hewn Cana wedding the water was turned into wine, one child said “It’ll be Ribena – it’s always Ribena!” We experimented with amplification on one occasion, and the voice of God was so impressive that one little lad was frightened to tears and had to be reassured that it was only Peter using a microphone.

It is good that members of the OTB team are recognised, and actually greeted, by some of the children out of school in St Minver and Rock. While church and school meet at different times, relations between us are closer and warmer.

A View on Golf Barbara Le Main It has been suggested that the Scots invented golf in 1438, hoping it would spread to England and thus undermine the natives’ stoicism. Then the Scots (or Picts) could come over the border to subject the English to their haggis eating ways.

Unfortunately for the Scots they were hoist with their own petard and taken over by the golf passion. They have even erected a shrine to the patron saint at St Andrews, where people from all over the world come to pay homage.

A large portion of countryside is used for a course, no fences or walls but trees and hedges abound to irk the player.

The course is grass covered, it varies in height from tall to almost billiard table smoothness. Courses are eighteen holes with usually a nine hole course for those with little stamina or beginners.

So to the ancient sport of Goffm Gouff or Gowff. Work must be done before you actually get to the Hole. It begins at the Teeing Off point where a small object called a tee is placed in the ground and the ball balanced thereon, mighty swipes taken to send the ball toward the hole.

Between the Teeing off point and the hole is the fairway, that is relatively free from obstacles. Bordering this clear area is the ‘rough’, this term covers anything from elephant grass to gorse, heather, bushes and small trees. Other hazards may be encountered like those left by sheep, but hopefully you won’t go into that. Water hazards are covered later. Any patches of trimmed grass are evidence of previous

visits by inaccurate golfers. Players have been found wandering aimlessly among the bushes muttering to themselves and only a double brandy and a few lessons from the local professional will put them right.

Having eventually overcome these obstacles by fair means or foul, depending whether you are a coarse golfer or an honest trier, the green should be in sight, a smooth grassy area with a hole and flag in it. Just in case the approach to the green looks too easy, some well meaning person has seen fit to place craters of soft sand which seem to move miraculously to meet any oncoming ball. I have heard it said that these sandy craters, or bunkers, as they are known, started life as flat patches of sand that would not support grass, then due to the efforts of enraged golfers trying to hit their balls onto the green, they have been excavated over the years. The flag stands smugly in the hole , daring you to get your ball in. The delightful baize effect of the green lulls you into a false sense of achievement, for when the balls travels across the green, bumps and slopes seem to appear from nowhere, these are called borrows, though other names have been heard from time to time. This is when the ball takes on a life of its own, by either running past the hole as if it weren’t there or by tripping neatly round the rim and tricking off over the green.

The course is laid out so that all holes are different. You may think that the designer would run out of ideas. Never! He takes

pleasure in re-routing streams to make what he laughingly calls ponds or water hazards. However, when perched on one bank with club in hand and ball on the slope, these remind one somewhat of Lake Superior.

Marshy areas are a trick up the course maker’s sleeve. You’ll hit, what you consider a good shot off the tee and seeing it land in a lush green place, you will think a hefty whack will send it toward its goal. This illusion is shattered when on trying to find your ball you sink up to your ankles in glutinous mud. A search would prove fruitless as this area is a compulsive consumer of balls.

The most important part of Golf is said to be the ‘nineteenth hole’, a euphemism for the bar in the Club House. You must have a strong constitution and be able to hold your liquor like a gentleman. This is also important for women, for now-a-days more ladies are taking up the game.

First taking up a position, with an elbow on the bar to support the now fatigued body, then the deft movement of the hand to the wallet or purse and the ordering of drinks for partners and opponents alike.

After the first drink has given warmth to the inner person, the next round will bring you to the ‘Post-mortem’, no old Smithers has not succumbed to the shock of buying a round, this is where excuses are for bad and even good scores. Young member to Senior member, having just beaten him: ‘I say Sir, dreadful bad luck on the ninth, very windy, gusty too, I had a few freak shots today must admit’. This hoping to placate him. Member having lost six balls and hardly touched the fairway: ‘Hurt my shoulder, yer know,gives me a hook. Must 54

Handicaps are something that should be considered separately. There is an optimum number of strokes (swipes at the ball) that everyone dreams of achieving but as only the very best players attain this goal, beginners or those of mediocre skill are allowed extra swipes to get around the course. Other handicaps exist but are not taken into account by the Handicap Committee. The built in hook or slice for example: that means the player when hitting the ball, decides that there is a more scenic route to the left or right to reach the hole.

The game may be played alone or in two’s, a foursome seems popular so a good partner is essential. Putting aside the almost angelic type you may be stricken with one of the following: the chatterbox; the know-all: the fidget; the tipple; your boss or if very unlucky a coarse golfer, whose ball never touches the fairway and always lands in bunkers.

The ‘Chatterbox’ starts as he means to go on, so that while teeing off from the first you are regaled with his latest news and views. Then later at the tenth tee he will probably have progressed to ‘Have you heard this one?’ There is an incident related that a player of this ilk was found gagged and tied the next day. Such a partner should be only sought if you have great concentration and can control your temper.

The ‘Know all’: every club has one of these.

the time you come back to the club house you will be down to eighteen. He will insist on correcting your, as he puts it, little mistakes and lectures you from tee to hole. What will really enter your nostril in a vertical direction is the fact that he is a seventeen handicap and has been so for the past ten years.

The ‘Fidget’: one of the more subtle annoyances. He could be an inveterate chewer of toffees or even a sucker of boiled sweets, usually kept in a tin. When teeing off you will catch a glimpse of him struggling into a jumper or jacket. He is the one who arrives just when you are gathering yourself for a twelve foot putt and carelessly drops his bag.

The ‘Tippler’: rare sort of bird but not extinct. An average golfer but very congenial company. When a foursome seems to be lacking excitement, this fellow will draw forth a flask the size of which you’ve never seen before in your life. He will suggest something to warm you up, this is harmless providing your opponents also enjoy the libation. Strict counting of the tots is essential because a scoring of twenty shots on the last two holes, plus the uncertain trolley towing to the Club House is sure to be noted.

Your ‘Boss’: as a partner or opponent neither are to be recommended. If you play with him you will suddenly and inexplicably develop a hook or slice, your previous skill with a putter will desert you leaving you quaking and wondering about the rise you were going to mention. On the other hand if you play against him or her you will play the game of your life. This is know as Murphy’s Law. If however your boss will not take no for answer, seek out

that old sling you had when a child and arrive next day at work pleading injury, an offer to caddie for him (that’s carrying his clubs).

The ‘Coarse Golfer’, a whole book has been written about this sort of person and I should say no more. If however you have not read the book, they are in a world of their own, ignoring all rules and engaging in one-up-manship. To be avoided at all costs.

Terms which you will hear bandied about the course. Fore, from beware before.

When this cry is heard crouch down and place your arms over your head, this shout is heard from a golfer having struck the ball and its flight path leaves something to be desired, in short it is heading for you. Birdie, Eagle and Albatross will fall on your ears from time to time, depending on the company you keep. Ornithology is not being taken up by some members or they did not get a bird strike on one of the holes, it means that the clever person has achieved a stroke, two strokes or three strokes respectively below the par for that hole. Ace is a hole in one. Always be present in the bar if possible when one is scored as it is the rule that after an accomplishment of this magnitude, drinks will be bought all round. On the other hand if you score a hole in one, make sure you are not seen and go home immediately. You would be surprised how word gets around and members you’ve never seen before turn up in the bar.

Someone said that golf is a way of spoiling a pleasant walk, this is not necessarily true, but you should be warned that once taken up it could become an obsession.

Trebetherick & Polzeath WI Our meeting on April 4th evening began with Jerusalem being sung and for the first time for some while being accompanied with music which was supplied by a DVD. Our President, Pam, introduced Mr Peter Tutthill the gentleman who knows all there is to know about the past railways of Bodmin to Wadebridge. Peter had made a map with stations covering this area with the many stops where farmers would collect the sand to enhance their soil for growing their crops. Barges would deliver sand to Wadebridge and the farmers would make their order for the quantity needed and it would be sent to the required station of their choice. From Bodmin the stations would be Target, Grogley Halt, Ruthern Bridge, Dunmere, Nanstallon, Boscawen Junction and would finish at Guineaport. He also told us that the Wadebridge Town Hall was originally the Corn Exchange that was built in 1888.

The ‘Bridge on Wool’ was originally called ‘The Cornish Arms’. Minerals were assayed on The Platt – which means Fair Plot. In 1840 was the first ‘Rail Excursion’ which was to see the hanging of 2 men. The last steam train was in 1963 and the last ‘Goods’ train to Wadebridge was in 1984.

Then the line was pulled up. Now we have the Camel Trail for walkers and cyclists.

Peter also had many photos from past times of the Railway, people and places.

Quite a fascinating and enjoyable evening listening to Peter. Bridget gave a vote of thanks.

After refreshments we continued our evening with Minutes of last meeting read, agreed and signed. Then Freda gave 56

her Treasurer’s Report. The date of the Brownies Donkey Derby is August 11th and we will do refreshments for this event as always.

Our outing for the summer was discussed and it was decided to have a coach to Truro and then on a Boat to Falmouth and the coach will then take us on to fish and chips on the way home. The date decided is June 19th.

We have been invited to have a Table Top for sales at the Council Trewint Fair on June 29th and we hope to attend.

A lovely letter from Val Stockton who was unable to attend because of ill health thanked everyone for flowers and kind messages wishing her a speedy recovery and she hopes to be able to attend at the next meeting.

The County Newsletter was read and any interesting events our members may wish to attend.

Our charity this year will be ‘Rett Syndrome’, a horrible genetically caused condition that affects girls when around eighteen months to 2 years rendering them totally incapable of any functions in a few short years. A member from the family of a little girl we know of will open our Christmas Fair.

Our ‘Soup and Pudding Lunch’ will be held on April 27th and a selection of 7 soups and 9 desserts will be served. The cost £5 and includes tea or coffee. There will be a display of our crafts and a stall selling preserves, jams and cakes.

We have decided to hold our Spring Lunch at Trevathan Farm on May 8th.

After discussion we have decided to hold our November Birthday party event ‘InHouse’ but maybe have caterers.

Bridget told us that she had heard on Radio Cornwall that ‘ShelterBox’ need Teddies to go into their boxes. Patterns were available and many members took home a copy, so we will soon have lots of

Teddies!

A Social Afternoon will be arranged to invite other WIs for ‘Afternoon Tea’, to be held on October 12th.

Competitions winners were read out and the Birthday Ladies of the month given plants. The Raffle winner was announced.

The evening closed rather later than usual because of all the interest in Peter’s photos.

St Kew WI Our April Meeting was a particularly enjoyable one with most members present, new member Brenda Thomas and two Visitors. President Becky Alien welcomed everyone. Our business included organising a visit to Pencarrow House and garden on May 15th and a visit to the Regal Cinema in July to which our friends from neighbouring WIs are invited.

Four members had attended the Spring Gountdown in the Hall for Cornwall that day at which Sir Tim Smit was the main guest speaker.

We then welcomed our speaker for the evening - Jan Long, a puppy trainer and specialiser for the Charity Dogs for Deaf People and Jade, a delightful 6 month old golden spaniel, and Evelyn who is a fundraiser for the charity. Jan explained how a dog like Jade can make an enormous difference to the life of a deaf person - actually change their lives. A totally deaf person becomes very isolated. Although only 6 months old,

Jade is already very well able to respond to hand signals, which Jan demonstrated.

She said that 1 in 6 people in the UK are deaf (which is 800,000 people) and there is a huge demand for puppies. The cost of a dog is £45,000, hence the need for fundraisers like Evelyn!

Jan was a wonderfully interesting speaker and she was thanked very much by Frances Eggins. Tea and delicious biscuits were then served by Elizabeth Hambly and Audrey Webb and many questions were answered by Jan, whilst Evelyn judged the two Competitions - a photo of the coast of Cornwall - Gill Glynne Jones 1st, Becky 2nd and Alison Gill 3rd. Alison also won Flower of the Month with a beautiful camellia. Next month, May 8th, we will welcome Adrian Langdon and his stunning photography - the natural history of the River Camel. This is not to be missed and any visitors will be most welcome.
