UMH - United Methodist Hymnal TFWS - The Faith We Sing

This is the last Sunday in our series on forgiveness. We have talked about WHY we need to forgive, WHAT forgiveness is (and isn’t) and HOW we forgive. As we close the series, a few random thoughts, facts and ideas: From a study by the Fetzer Institute: 62% of American adults say they need more forgiveness in their personal lives; 94% want to see more forgiveness in the country. The same study found that over 50% said there are situations in which people should never be forgiven, such as abuse, murder and other intentional crimes. BUT, what does God say? What do we pray when we follow Jesus in the Lord’s prayer? (See Matthew 6:12) In another study, University of Tennessee students explored the connection between forgiveness and physical health. They discovered that “harboring feelings of betrayal may be linked to high blood pressure.” People who chose forgiveness over grudge-bearing reported better overall health and few visits to physicians. Forgiveness is good for you, body and soul. “To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.” ― C.S. Lewis “To err is human, to forgive, divine.” ― Alexander Pope, An Essay on Criticism “Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude.” ― Martin Luther King Jr. “Keep in mind, hurting people often hurt other people as a result of their own pain. If somebody is rude and inconsiderate, you can almost be certain that they have some unresolved issues inside. They have some major problems, anger, resentment, or some heartache they are trying to cope with or overcome. The last thing they need is for you to make matters worse by responding angrily.” ― Joel Osteen, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential
