*********************************** SAFE SANCTUARY After a thorough review on June 13, there were editorial changes made to clean up some grammar issues, and one clarification matter regarding minimum age to work with children or youth. As clarified, no one under 21 may volunteer or be hired in a supervisory capacity. Copies of the proposed 2013 safe sanctuary policy will be distributed to members of the Church Council and made available to all. Church Council needs to vote to approve or not the 2013 edition as soon as possible to expedite business of the SPRC. With that in mind, the Church Council will meet briefly to address this single matter at 12:15 on Sunday, June 23, 2013 in Heidtman Hall. Please contact Bert Motley, the Council Chair or Scarlett Hester with any questions or concerns. A Few things to Share from Annual Conference… Annual Conference was a joyous mix of inspired preaching, inspiring testimony, reconnecting with old friends, pondering theologically everything from guns to our Christian responsibility for children and mothers to working to alleviate world hunger. For me, Tuesday night worship was over the TOP! Hearing testimonies from young people and singing praise blessed me through and through. I especially love when we sing the mash up of “How Great is our God” and “How Great Thou Art.” It just goes to show that people of different worship genres and musical tastes can meet in the middle to sing praise to our EVERLASTING, AWESOME, GREAT GOD! On Tuesday, the Annual Conference was blessed with the presence of many people beyond delegates and clergy who packed 285,000 meals for the Stop Hunger Now program. In that group were Christian Leprettre, Logan Leprettre, Matthew Caulder and Morgan Weesner, led by the faithful and wonderful Lisa Smith and Elizabeth Weesner. It made my heart sing to see them there. The Conference needed $75,000 to purchase the materials etc. for the meals. We raised well over $100,000. Bishop Holston declared that the surplus money will return to the districts to impact ministries fighting hunger locally. Also at Annual Conference, Jonathan Harris, the grandson of Roy Baker, was commissioned and is now a provisional elder. Ordination is a LONG and complicated process, designed to encourage thorough discernment of one’s call, gifts and graces. In 2 years, Jonathan will go before the Board of Ordained Ministry again, and, God willing, be elected and ordained an Elder in Full Connection. 2 last words: Bishop Holston enjoins all churches to dream God Sized Dreams, to step up and out and give the seemingly impossible a try. What shall we do, St. Mark? Finally, United Methodist clergy are appointed yearly. We only get one year at a time. On Wednesday, Bishop Holston reappointed me to serve as your pastor for another year. Wayne, the children and I are over the moon with joy. Now, what God sized dreams can we ALL get into?
