A NOTE FROM PASTOR ANDY January 22-25 St. Luke’s will host AWAKEN 2017. This life changing event will be held at both campuses with both night time and day time activities, with programing that is aimed at children, youth, and adults. Our guest speaker, Wes Putnam, has led in Christ-center times of renewal all over the U.S. and even in several other countries. Wes is a great communicator whose messages are filled with humor and challenge. Make no mistake AWAKEN 2017 is something needed by us all. As I have been praying about our time together, God has shown me where I and we are most in need of His presence, His purpose, His power in our lives. First, as we begin this new year we need to be awakened from our spiritual sleep and slumber. There are many reasons why we may be sleeping. We may be just flat out tired; we may be sick in some way on the inside and so we just closed our eyes to Jesus and to His family of grace; we may be so focused on everything going on in the world, our eyes stuck wide open to the world, that we have zero awareness and sight of God’s Spirit at work in us and in the world. Second, we have let our lives become spiritually impoverished and bankrupt. We may have houses, cars, savings accounts, retirement plans, big screen TV’s, over ample clothes and shoes and other possessions but our souls, our spiritual lives are undernourished. At my house we have enough food in our fridge and pantry to last at least a couple of weeks, and I seldom ever miss 3 meals a day that literally take hours to prepare and consume. But how much time do I, do we, spend in prayer seeking God’s face and God’s plan each day? How much time do we spend in His Word, in His service open to His voice and purpose each day? Most of us have full stomachs, lives full of material blessings. How many of us make seeking the fullness of His Spirit the number one agenda of our lives? Third, we are stuck in spiritual neutral. Our spiritual lives have been the same for years, maybe even decades. Somewhere along the way we stopped pedaling and started coasting and we have lost a keen sense of God’s presence, God’s Spirit alive and working in us. Either we have never fully and powerfully known him or we miss Him! We need a mighty move of God in our lives! Fourth, we are experiencing a spiritual atrophy as His sons and daughters in a day and age when we need to be passionately alive and invested for His Kingdom. Our world will never be influenced by Christians whose lives are lukewarm and self-consumed. Folks get atrophied when they lay in the bed and don’t use their muscles. A week in bed can take months of recovery. Whenever I go a significant period of time without working out, that first trip back to the gym reminds me of all those unused, shriveling muscles. Folks when is the last time you really used your trusting and risking muscles for the sake of God’s Kingdom. When is the last time you truly lifted your heart, your voice, your hands to the Almighty and Living God who longs to not just be a compartment in your life but the Lord of your life? My friends, my brothers and sisters in our Christ-centered family of grace, we need an AWAKENING! An awakening is not just about experiencing religious niceness and things becoming just a little bit better. AWAKENING is about the transformation of our very reality, about our lives on planet earth never being the same again. AWAKENING is not just about us feeling a little bit better but about us being so changed that we begin to be profound change agents in this world which we live. C’mon Lord Jesus, come down and wake us up for your glory and for our joy in you! C’mon Holy Spirit ring out an alarm that shakes us and moves us in step with presence each day! C’mon Father God and put your arms of grace and healing around us! We need you. We need AWAKENING. Spiritual Sleep Spiritually impoveristhed Spirtually in neutral Spiritual atrophy Awakening not a little different…. 2 Awaken St. Luke’s Lubbock

A NOTE FROM PASTOR MATT New ‘You’ Resolution Every year we make some resolution we want to achieve in the coming months. I thought of three resolutions for myself: Love my wife and daughter more than I did last year; simplify my life; and to lead our church to the next level of scriptural awareness. What if in the year 2017 you made a, “New You Resolution?” Psalm, 51:10, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” That Psalm talks about renewal, a clean heart, and a committed spirit. This psalm was written when David approached the prophet Nathan soon after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. He knew his life was not right. He knew he needed a resolution with God to continue living. He was seeking a “New You Resolution.” I suggest that a “New You Resolution” be grounded in our knowledge of scripture and our time spent in prayer. You can’t make a resolution to be different if you are not going to change anything. We are going to have to pick up our Bibles, read, and then pray every day. Just read a small amount to get started and simply pray for a few minutes. Find some text within the Bible that interests you. If you struggle with hope, then look at Lamentations. Looking for love? Read Song of Solomon. Trying to get a quick overview of living life as a Christian? The book of Ephesians is a great place to start. If topic studies aren’t your thing, look at a biblical reference book and see what the bible has to say about specific questions. Memorize some scriptures. There are thousands, if not millions individual scriptures that are the answers to the questions of our day. Jesus even used this method, never out of context, but to answer his friends and his enemies. If you just do not know where to start, please contact one of the pastors and we will help you find a starting place. Are you ready to be made new in Jesus Christ? Are you ready to dive into a new pool of scriptural knowledge and understanding? I hope you will join me in 2017 in becoming more of who God calls us to be in Jesus Christ. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2

A NOTE FROM SCOTT LATHAM Please help spread the word for folks to know about these opportunities. These groups and classes are open to anyone they might benefit including people you know who do not attend St. Luke’s.

MAKING MARRIAGE STRONGER

You don’t know them. But when they got married they were viewed as today’s Romeo and Juliet; King Arthur and Guinevere; the “IT” couple. The “TRY-AND-BE-LIKE-THEM” couple. They led worship at churches and spoke at retreats and camps. She wrote a very popular blog and he had a very successful business. They were raising children, biological and adopted, and living a beautiful, fairytale life. Now they are divorced. It shocked everyone. Everyone. Did you know that the number one reason couples divorce is due how they argue. Certain styles of conflicting are toxic and deadly to marital love. Learning how to conflict in a way that resolves issues and also preserves respect and trust is the key to having a marriage that last till “death do us part”. In my opinion, EVERYONE can always use a refresher course on how to argue well. A “Making Marriage Stronger” Grace Group will begin Sunday, February 5th, focused on how to argue and conflict for good resolutions. The class will be from 4:00-5:30 at Southwest campus and nursery will be provided. If you have questions please call Scott at the church office

SERIOUSLY DATING, ENGAGED, AND NEWLY MARRIED

Do you know how to make a bieroch (a German food)? My mom’s parents came to the United States from Germany so naturally my mom cooked German dishes. As with many recipes, certain things went into making a bieroch and certain things did not. To add an ingredient not in the recipe or to subtract an ingredient from the recipe resulted in not making a bieroch. What are the ingredients couples need to bring to their relationships in order for their marriages to be what God intended marriage to be in the first place? A “SERIOUSLY DATING, ENGAGED, AND NEWLY MARRIED” group will begin Wednesday, February 1st. We will gather at 6:00-7:30pm at Central campus. Focus will be given to Ten Essential Ingredients Necessary For Lifelong Love. All young couples are invited whether they come to St. Luke’s, go to another church, or don’t attend anywhere. If you need more information please call Scott at the church office:

COLLEGE HARDCORE BIBLE STUDY

All college students are welcome to the Latham home Tuesday nights at 8:00-9:30pm for a robust, thought-provoking, in-depth bible study. Currently we are studying the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. We will take a break for all the holidays but start back up January 24th. If you need more information please call Scott at the church office

WORKOLOGY ~ HOW DO YOU BRING FAITH IN JESUS TO WORK

We will spend 1/3 of our lifetime working. Yet there are a staggering number of Americans who are extremely unhappy in their occupations. What does that mean? Why do some people see work as a curse and others treat it like a god? And as Christians, were does work fit into God’s calling on our life to “seek first His Kingdom”? This Grace Group is for all Junior, Senior, or Graduate college students who feel a need to examine and unpack the meaning of work, what the Bible has to say about work, and how we can bring our Faith to the secular workplace with integrity and dignity. We will look at Daniel, Esther, Nehemiah, and Joseph as case studies as well as the meaning of Sabbath and other work related topics. We will meet Wednesday nights, starting January 25th. Our meeting will be 8:00-9:30pm in the fellowship hall at Central campus. If you have any questions please call Scott at the church office

VIDA ABUNDANTE Let’s begin with the End in mind! Hunger is a strong motivator for everything. Each basic need unsatisfied for a long time will increase the visceral impulses in every living creature. Needs will govern over the entire function until it needs to be solved. The creatures could make drastic changes in their behavior during those circumstances and do many unexpected things. Even their natural senses will be able becoming a powerful tool that works well coordinated to hunt their prey. That kind of powerful natural force could be used when they are hungry. History of the USA Has a lot of examples of its pioneers, those who passed from the East to the west of the country, risking everything for a better life! During most difficult times, hunger, thirst, and other natural factors have been a strong motivator to do anything in order to achieve your goals. In contrast, quite the opposite could be seen in a well-fed creature. After eating or be satisfied in any way, they prefer to rest or enjoying the moment. Several months ago, when I preached at St Luke's UMC, a challenge was raised. I did it because I know the American people love it because they understand how important has been, for the construction of this country, to be led by a real need or passion. America is very proud of how far it has gone compared to the rest of the world. It was possible not only because they believe in hard work to get a better life but for being motived for powerful forces. The results are not only a country that won the battle against hunger and other social enemies which the world are still fighting, but who is anticipated and helps others to achieve it. The Bible speaks of a kind of hunger and thirst, a spiritual one, of righteousness. That kind of need that no country in the world by itself could even be able to conquer. No other countries in the world are ready to fight for it like US. We couldn't being fulfill until reach righteousness. But, as everything we conquered before, we need that powerful force as a motor, as Jesus said! "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness! Because they will be full ". Mt 5: 6 Let's look for that kind of blessing this new year! This country already has the Christians, it only needs the same passion for which Christ was born and died. We did not be born for that, but we can die for it!

MUSIC MINISTRY Happy New Year and welcome to 2017! The Music Ministry is looking forward to another year of outside-the-box creativity and spiritually enriching music and music related events. Perhaps you have a new year’s resolution that involves serving in the church? The Music Ministry is a good place to look. We have several musical ensembles, four technical crews and need assistance with storage solutions. We can find a place for you to serve! If you know someone who is not plugged in at St. Luke’s, please mention that the Music Ministry is a place to get plugged in. Our groups are a welcoming and friendly place to be. Please pass on my contact information: acoward@stlukeslubbock.org; 797-4393. I would like to make a fourth invitation for serving in the Technical Crew. Please consider serving in one of the spots discussed below, or giving me the name of someone who would be good in one of the positions. We have several openings in both worship services at the Central Campus. It is important to fill each spot in order to have a reliable rotation that keeps the worship services running smoothly. You can be on the Sound Crew (which operates the soundboard) or the Media Crew (which operates the slideshow). While these are vital jobs during worship, they are not difficult and we will make sure that you are fully trained. Look at the chart below for openings.

Joke of the month: Cowboy Joe was telling his fellow cowboys back on the ranch about his first visit to a big-city church. "When I got there, they had me park my old truck in the corral," Joe began. "You mean the parking lot," interrupted Charlie, a more worldly fellow. "I walked up the trail to the door," Joe continued. "The sidewalk to the door," Charlie corrected him. "Inside the door, I was met by this dude," Joe went on. "That would be the usher," Charlie explained. "Well, the usher led me down the chute," Joe said. "You mean the aisle," Charlie said. "Then, he led me to a stall and told me to sit there," Joe continued. "Pew," Charlie retorted. "Yeah," recalled Joe. "That's what that pretty lady said when I sat down beside her."
