Terry Smith grew up in the tiny town of Lamont in Buchanan County. Smith’s children
While he spent most of his career in Cedar Rapids and loved to travel, Smith never forgot his roots in rural Iowa.
After his passing in 2014, Smith’s children were determined to honor his legacy by strengthening health care in the rural communities their father loved. In 2016, they established the Terry L. Smith Family Endowment through St. Luke’s Foundation. Interest earned from this gift will support St. Luke’s Rural Health Care Grant Program and St. Luke’s LifeGuard Ambulance.
to honor his legacy by strengthening health care in the rural communities their father loved.
“We wanted Dad’s gift to go toward rural health care programs because Dad was from Lamont and maintained strong ties with friends and family from Buchanan, Delaware and Linn counties,” explained Terry’s son Roger M. Smith. “As his children, we want to ensure delivery of health care and transportation of patients to and from these areas.” The Rural Health Care Grant Program provides matching funds toward projects that improve the health and wellness of rural residents. St. Luke’s LifeGuard Ambulance services Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities with around-the-clock emergency and critical care transportation. The dollars generated by the Terry L. Smith Family Endowment will support these programs with ongoing maintenance, staff education and training, and specialized equipment and facility needs.
