Homes for Every Generation Find the Home for You

Finding a home that meets your family’s unique preferences, lifestyle and budget can be challenging, which is why Shearwater, the master-planned community in St. Johns County, was meticulously designed for today’s way of life. In addition to its resort-style amenities, robust social calendar and connection to the outdoors, Shearwater offers a variety of innovative home designs to satisfy the needs of your modern family – whether you are empty nesters, a growing family or living in a multi-generational home.

Multi-Generational Homes

Pew Research Center released a report in 2018 showing almost 1 in every 5 Americans lives in an environment with multiple generations. As lifestyle trends have shifted toward keeping multiple generations under one roof, Shearwater shifted with them, prioritizing function without sacrificing form. The beauty of multi-generational homes is the flexibility each family is afforded. This is a great option for families with children who just graduated from school yet need time before venturing off on their own. Aging family members who can no longer live on their own can also move in without feeling burdensome or invasive. Living with more family members may just be the best financial option for some, or perhaps this lifestyle is a cultural tradition.

Homes range from 1,637 square feet to over 4,000 square feet, with three to six bedrooms, and one and two-story models.

No matter your family’s unique makeup, Shearwater offers diverse home sizes. Homes range from 1,637 square feet to over 4,000 square feet, with three to six bedrooms, and one- and two-story models. Varying home designs and prices are offered in each of Shearwater’s distinct neighborhoods: The Cove, North Creek, The Trails, The Falls and The Woodlands, Shearwater’s gated community. In addition to homes, Shearwater recently opened the Cove, its first neighborhood of one and twostory townhomes.

The Cove features David Weekly Homes townhomes that were designed with both the individual and the family in mind. Future homeowners have the option between three different floor-plans ranging in size from approx. 1,574 – 1,817 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms and 2-2½ baths. One and two-story plans are available. Each home includes a 2-car garage, 9-10 feet high ceilings, private entry and open-concept living spaces throughout. The goal with each of these townhomes is to create a no maintenance lifestyle, perfect for active families. The first and smallest option is The Barnes, a single-story townhome with an open living room, dining room and kitchen featuring extra windows. This plan is perfect for individuals with aging family members who may not be able to tackle the stairs every day, but still want to be included in daily festivities. The Alton is the largest of the three plans. It is a two-story townhome with an open living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor and two bedrooms, a bathroom, the laundry room and the owner’s retreat on

the second floor. This plan will keep all family activities downstairs and is best for families who enjoy having guests over for dinner and social events. Finally, The Megan embraces some of the finest features from both the Barnes and Alton plans. It is a two-story townhome with an open great room on the first floor and the kitchen with owner’s retreat on the second floor, featuring optional balconies. These designs are just a sample of the possibilities you have with Shearwater. Whether you are living as a single professional, downsizing, or you are purchasing a home to raise your children, picture yourself spending time on hiking the trails, attending community events or floating down our lazy river. The house is just one piece of what makes Shearwater home!

New Wolfson Children’s Hospital Emergency Center coming to Baptist Medical Center South

Designed to serve the fast-growing area of Jacksonville & St. Johns with top-ranked care just for children Families in the fast-growing area of south Jacksonville that includes northern St. Johns County will soon have convenient access to specialized pediatric emergency care from Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Integrated into the state-of-the-art Baptist Medical Center South campus, the full-service Wolfson Children’s ER will bring the expertise of the top-ranked children’s hospital close to home for area families with children age 0-17. The 8,100-square-foot Wolfson Children’s ER will be a separate facility, with its own parking area, entrance, check in and triage area, family restrooms and 12-room unit dedicated entirely to children and families. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of this year. “Everything about our new Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center at Baptist South will be designed to provide world-class pediatric emergency care close to home,” said Michael D. Aubin, FACHE, president of Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center at Baptist South will be staffed by a team comprised of doubleboard-certified pediatric emergency physicians, emergency nurses, respiratory therapists and radiologic technologists, all connected with the larger team of pediatric specialists at the downtown Wolfson Children’s Hospital, 24/7. The ER will be outfitted with equipment specially designed for children. “With our new Children’s Emergency Center, we are combining the exceptional care Baptist South already provides to local families with the implementation of specialized pediatric protocols available at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Bringing our strengths together will further en-

hance our services and provide an even better patient and family experience,” said Nicole Thomas, FACHE, president of Baptist Medical Center South. Darin Roark, BSN, MBA, RN, FACHE, vice president of ambulatory campuses and Baptist Health system emergency departments, said construction of the Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center is the culmination of years of planning and listening to the voices of parents. Roark said, “Parents told us they wanted the specialized emergency care from Wolfson Children's to be close by. They asked for a dedicated space with its own parking, and most of all, a kid-friendly environment to take the fear out of going to the ER. We listened, and we are thrilled to bring all this and more to the Baptist South campus.” Wolfson Children’s Hospital is one of only 13 children’s hospitals ranked in the nation as a Leapfrog Top Hospital and is the only state-designated Pediatric Trauma Center in Northeast Florida. With five emergency centers located throughout the greater Jacksonville area, Wolfson Children’s Hospital has recently partnered with Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare to launch a children’s ER, bringing its specialized care to more children throughout the region. The parking lot on the south side of Baptist South will be closed for the duration of construction. Patients and visitors to the Baptist South Emergency Center should continue to park in Lot A, directly in front of the ER entrance. The visitor garage is also available for patients and visitors. Cara Brookins! best Selling Author Featured at

She is Fierce!

ara Brookins story of how she rebuilt her life after tragic circumstances was an inspiration to hear at the She Is Fierce! event at Treasury on the Plaza in downtown St. Augustine. Brookins left a bad relationship and with her four kids, they built a 3500 square foot house – with lots of help from YouTube ‘How To’ videos! She documented their experiences in the bestselling book, “Rise: How a House Built a Family,” which was featured on the TODAY Show and on news and lifestyle programs internationally – ultimately getting billions of views worldwide! It's a story of building not just a house, but a better life, a stronger family, and a transformed future. Her story is also the subject of an upcoming Hollywood film. For women who want to achieve anything they can dream up Cara’s message was clear. Be willing to do the hard things. If you don't know how to do something, be willing to figure it out. Don't take baby steps - take giant leaps. While it sounds pretty straightforward, putting these ideas into practice takes tremendous courage and perseverance. Great speakers like Cara are part of the concept of She is Fierce! As Founder Kelly Young said, “We are highlighting the power of women to do just about anything – and featuring local fierce women who are making a difference in our local community.” She Is Fierce! connects established leaders and women on the rise. It is a global movement

dedicated to empowering women to live boldly by providing an online platform for inspiration and a membership community with the resources and support to take a big leap forward in their life. She Is Fierce! was founded by St. Augustinian Kelly Youngs in 2015 and has grown into a global women’s network with members in eight countries and more than 150,000 fans. Women’s Wednesdays was presented by Bozard Ford Lincoln, a local company with women in critical leadership positions and more than 30 women on their staff. The networking hour is was hosted by Flagler Health+ and featured stylist makeovers, free headshots, wellness assessments and support, Photo Booths, connection games, a brand new ‘Create Space,’ plus shopping with local womenowned businesses.

Open 7 days a week - Lunch & Dinner

by Diana Brummer, MSW

uly 4th marks the celebration of America's Independence from British rule. It was on this day in 1776 that the thirteen colonies declared they were no longer subject to the rules, restrictions, and ideologies being imposed on them by a monarch positioned across an ocean and out of touch with the colonists' daily lives. As human beings, we have the same ability to declare our independence from the negative, unproductive thoughts and beliefs that may have been imposed on us by a ruler who is no longer part of our lives. It is up to us to ask ourselves if our current thoughts and behaviors are creating the life we desire, or if they are unconsciously perpetuating an experience that belonged our parents, grandparents, church, or educators. No one can give us permission to live the life of our dreams. We must claim it for ourselves. And, as the saying goes, the first step toward getting what you want out of life is deciding what you want.

What is it that YOU want? Do you desire better relationships with the people you care about? Less anxiety about the future? Better boundaries at work? Greater progress toward goals, or simply a kinder, more supportive relationship with yourself?

I encourage you to become mindful of what you want. I also encourage you to ask yourself why you feel the way you feel, why you say the things you say, and why you behave in the manner you behave. In order to change our thinking and our actions, we need to understand what motivates our thoughts and behaviors. To gain the freedom to think and behave differently, we must become aware of what is driving us in the first place. Ask yourself why you're feeling sad, mad, disappointed, or frustrated. Write about it in a journal. Talk about it with a trusted friend. Spend time in nature. Get quiet. Meditate on it. Allow yourself the space to find the answers. This Fourth of July, let's declare our own independence from self-limiting, unproductive, negative thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve us. Let's give ourselves permission to envision and create the life of our dreams.

Freedom is yours. The only person standing in the way is you. Wishing you all a safe, relaxing, and emotionally healthy Fourth of July! For more information on building, strengthening, and healing relationships, please visit our blog at

You are More Like Your A/C System Thank You Realize by Tom Casey, America’s Most Awarded Contractor

ow, don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying you’re a cyborg; part human, part machine! What I am saying is that the components of your A/C system function very similar to how your body’s systems function to keep you alive & well. Let’s compare some basic physiology to various A/C system components.

Your thermostat is the “brain” of your A/C system. It’s the device that sends signals for your system to turn on & off, speed up or slow down, and even when to save energy when you’re not home. If your thermostat malfunctions, little else will operate correctly.

The “heart” of your A/C system is your compressor. This device is what pumps refrigerant to create the cooling or heating effect you’re looking for depending on the season. Refrigerant is like the “blood” and is what gets circulated by the compressor to the various components in your system to create the “cool” or “warm”.

Your blower inside of your air handler is like the “lungs” of your A/C system. This component is what moves the actual air to & from your home, the same way your lungs inhale & exhale. Just like your lungs, blowers can move adequate or inadequate amounts of airflow depending on the overall “health” of your system. If your blower is “out of shape” your A/C system will have a hard time breathing properly.

The network of ducts running to the various areas of your home is like your “circulatory system”. This system of supplies & returns, trunks & branches act just like your veins & arteries in your body, bringing air to & from your air handler to be cooled or heated, then recirculated back again. Similar to blowers, ductwork can circulate adequate or inadequate amounts of airflow depending on their condition; i.e. dirty, clogged, restricted, undersized, etc.

Your air filters and other devices that clean & purify the air in your A/C system are like your “kidneys & liver”. The same way these critical organs clean & purify your blood and body, your filters keep your system and air that you breathe clean & pure too. Also, just as there are things you can do to enhance the performance of your body in this regard, there are different types of filtration and purification to improve the air quality in your home too.

During cooling mode, the indoor coil that “absorbs” heat from the air inside your home is called an evaporator coil, while the outdoor coil that “rejects” the heat to the outside is called the condenser coil. These coils are part of the refrigeration system and are responsible for absorbing and rejecting heat to regulate comfort, similar to how your “skin” works for your body. And, just like your skin, if you cover or block these coils with dirt or debris, their ability to work properly goes down dramatically. Both of these coils must be kept clean so that they can effectively and efficiently take the “heat” from where you don’t want it (inside) and dispose of it where you don’t care (outside). So, there you have it. Now you know that you ARE more like you A/C system than you ever realized. With this new knowledge, you will be able to amaze your friends and family with your expertise, as well as prevent little issues from turning into big ones because you NOW understand the purpose of OFFERING your A/C system compoPLUMBING! nents better.

A Message From The Vet byDr.Dr. Deckard, DVM With Kathleen Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Thousands of years after they were first domesticated, cats still retain many of their natural instincts, and cats who live outdoors will hunt, climb, and defend their territory, just like they did during the time of the Ancient Egyptians. But what about indoor cats? Every veterinarian will agree that keeping a cat indoors is a much better option than letting them be outside. Inside, they aren’t at risk for disease and trauma, and generally live longer, healthier lives than an outdoor cat. But cats who are indoors are often not stimulated enough mentally, and this can lead to many unwanted and destructive behaviors, and even some health problems. Environmental Enrichment is a growing focus for many veterinarians and feline behavior experts. Under stimulated cats often exhibit destructive scratching or chewing, inappropriate urinating or defecating, aggression, self-mutilation or overgrooming, anxiety, and obesity. Using food puzzles, feeding toys, or hiding food and treats in different places around the house can mimic the behavior of “hunting,” for food. Hiding small amounts of food in places you know your cat will seek it out or stumble upon it, gets them used to foraging. Providing edible plants like cat grass or

catnip will also make a cat very happy! Toys often satisfy the chasing behavior that’s part of hunting. Try a variety of balls, feathers, stuffed mice, interactive toys, etc. to see what your cat prefers to play with and engage with them for a few minutes every day. You’d be surprised how many cats will play fetch with their favorite toys! Rotating or switching out their favorite toys every few days also keeps them from getting bored. Cats like to drink from fresh water sources like faucets, so providing a fountain is usually very appreciated, and encourages them to drink more, which most cats benefit greatly from! They also like to sit up high, and it’s not so they can look down on you! When your cat is up high, they feel safe, secure, and invisible! Cat trees, perches, shelves, window seats, and even a welcome spot on top of the refrigerator can satisfy their need for vertical space. Cats also like to hide in boxes, laundry baskets, paper bags, etc. Providing ample safe spaces for them to hide are critical to a comfy, enriched existence. Scratching is a natural communicative behavior, and cats should be encouraged to scratch appropriate things. Carpet posts, cardboard scratchers, and rope or rough fabric is

very inviting to cats. Placing catnip, treats and toys near them can encourage cats to use them. Providing cats with enclosed outdoor access like a screened porch allows them to experience the sights, sounds, and smells associated with being outdoors. If there is no access for that, there are video and audio products that have been designed for feline enrichment! Cats can also be trained, and this provides great mental stimulation for them. They can be taught to respond to cues like “sit,” and “down,” and “shake/high-5.” Most studies show clicker-training a cat is the best method for training, and it’s fun for both of you! Lastly, providing a litterbox that is attractive to your cat is of ample importance. Experiment with different types of litters, different sized and style boxes, and different spaces to keep them in to help avoid unwanted elimination. An enriched environment gives cats an opportunity to behave more naturally, even in an enclosed space. Allowing a cat to exercise hunting, chasing, scratching, climbing, perching, and foraging behaviors can reduce unwanted behaviors, and increase the chances of living in harmony alongside our feline friends for many years to come.
