WELCOME TO ST JOHN’S CHURCH, DEE WHY (on the corner of Avon Road and Oaks Avenue) St John’s is a place of soul-stirring worship, challenging preaching, fine art and music, warm fellowship and outreach. It remains as Dee Why’s oldest institution. We are an Anglican parish in the Catholic Tradition of Anglicanism, which: • welcomes everyone • seeks to live the life of Christ in community • reaches out in love to others to share this life If you are a baptised communicant Christian from another Church you are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us today, or you may choose to come forward to receive a blessing. Please join us for refreshments after all services.
as we celebrate
PALM SUNDAY 13 April 2014 9:00am Hymns: Setting: Anthem:
Palm Sunday Liturgy – Blessing of Palms, Procession and Sung Mass, with Godly Play (one morning service only) See Service Book Missa Ferialis (anon.) God so Loved the World (John Stainer)
Music notes: This morning’s mass setting is an anonymous setting which dates from seventeenth-century Spain; ‘Missa Ferialis’ contrasts sections of plainsong with homophonic verses for the whole choir. As is traditional the choral sections are accompanied. The anthem this morning is taken from ‘The Crucifixion’ by Sir John Stainer (1840-1901) much performed by choirs at Passiontide.
Children’s Palm Sunday Service No other evening service
St John’s Anglican Church acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land and pays respect to all Aboriginal people, and to their families past and present. For more information please visit our website
FROM THE RECTOR
13 April 2014
Dear Friends, As Holy Week begins we are swept along with the drama of the story of our salvation won for us through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The approaching celebration of Easter is a very special one for us this year as we welcome Kathryn Fox into the family of faith through the sacrament of Baptism. Please continue to pray for Kathryn as she prepares for her baptism at the Easter Vigil. I trust that as many of you as possible will be present to support her. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

The children’s service is for everyone. Please come if you are able and welcome the many young families who will visit St John’s for the service. 2014 Office Bearers will be commissioned today (Palm Sunday) during the Holy Eucharist Amnesty International: Letter writing will be conducted after this morning’s service with Neridah Byrne. For more information please speak with Neridah today. The letters for today address the mass death sentencing in Egypt of defendants who have been arrested on what appear to be politically motivated charges, and who have been denied permission to attend their trials, respond to accusations or examine witnesses.
