St John Ambulance

The difference in your school Every year, about 150,000 people* die in situations where first aid could have given them the chance to live. Effective first aid can be the difference between life and death. Even so, fewer than one in 10 people have been trained in first aid. In addition to providing the health and safety and first aid training that your staff need, we want every young person to have the opportunity to learn basic life saving skills at school: •• We train your teachers and support staff, giving them the skills and confidence to deal effectively with emergencies as well as helping your school meet its regulatory requirements •• Our schools teams work with you to teach your pupils essential life saving skills •• We provide your staff with the skills and practical resources to teach first aid as part of your teaching curriculum

Health and safety training for your school staff

It’s vital that, whenever needed, first aid is delivered with the confidence gained from effective training, and using appropriate, quality first aid supplies. Practical health and safety training to identify hazards and reduce risks is every bit as important.

25 Key health and safety considerations 27 What health and safety training do you need?

By working with St John Ambulance to teach first aid to your students, you’re helping us to equip an entire generation with the confidence and ability to be the difference between life and death. Learning first aid at a young age also helps to build self-esteem, as well as develop team work and communication skills. First aid and health and safety learning can help you to meet National Curriculum requirements.

27 Why you should use St John Ambulance for health and safety training

St John Ambulance provides the training, equipment and teaching programmes you, your staff and your students need to be the difference.

Introduction

Your responsibility Research by St John Ambulance found that:

Quality standards

• a lmost a third of businesses experience a specific recurring accident in their workplace

All our services comply with the ISO 9001:2008 quality standard and meet SAFEcontractor health and safety standards, satisfying some of the toughest assessors in the business.

• four out of five employers acknowledge that there are times when a first aider isn’t available • nearly two thirds of people would like first aid training at work. The cost of not meeting your legal obligations can be enormous to your school, your staff, your students and the wider community. Providing your staff with the skills to prevent accidents and save lives can be the difference to everyone concerned with your school.

We can deliver Everything you need from one trusted supplier As well as the best training, we can provide you with all the first aid and health and safety supplies you need for your school. We have thousands of products in our range, from first aid kits (and the supplies you need to keep them stocked) to fire safety equipment and automated external defibrillators.

Bespoke training at your school premises Your staff members don’t have to come to one of our scheduled courses to receive the best training. We can come to you and tailor any of our courses to meet your school’s exact requirements. Training your staff in groups at the school premises allows you to fit training around your schedule and make use of opportunities such as inset days. This can also be more costeffective, with significant savings for each person trained. Visit sja.org.uk/onsite for further details and see page 11 for details of our new First Aid Inset training, which can be customised to meet your training needs.

By choosing St John Ambulance to train and equip your staff, you are also supporting the nation’s leading first aid charity. We teach people first aid through advice and training and we campaign to educate people about the importance of first aid. Because even basic first aid can save a life. Many of those we teach become St John Ambulance volunteers, working tirelessly to ensure that first aid skills are available whenever and wherever needed. How our income is spent: • J ust £2.10 pays for each child in a class of 30 to receive a free first aid guide

We train more people than any other first aid and health and safety provider. In 2011, we delivered training to over 300,000 employees, and 600,000 young people received first aid training through our schools and youth programmes.

• £ 25 enables us to provide a carer with free first aid training

Expert guidance

• £ 2,251 fully equips a St John Ambulance Community First Responder to attend emergency calls and provide care until the emergency services arrive

It’s our business to help you make your school as safe as possible. If you’re unsure of your requirements then we can help you find the right training and supplies solutions.

Schools in England are bound by health and safety legislation (see page 25). You’re required to have appropriate measures in place and ensure you have a sufficient number of staff members trained to deal with situations when they occur. You also need to have the appropriate supplies and equipment.

Supporting our work in your community

Skilled employees Our professionally qualified trainers have vast experience of working with schools to deliver effective training that can really be the difference in your school. Our schools team members, who work with both your teachers and pupils, are all CRB checked.

• £ 270 covers the cost of a qualified trainer teaching a complete first aid course to 30 school students

• £55,198 pays for a new ambulance. No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. We are St John Ambulance. We are the difference. The difference between a life lost. And a life saved.

‘Teach the difference’ is our website specifically for helping schools to teach first aid in the classroom. Our own research shows that almost seven out of 10 children wouldn’t know what to do if someone they knew was hurt, yet 72% of these children say they want to learn first aid. The teaching resources available on this website support the National Curriculum and can be used to meet the needs of your class. As well as tools to teach first aid, you’ll find worksheets and activities that cover choices, values and consequences – key elements of the PSHE education curriculum. They complement each other, helping your students to learn life saving skills, as well as developing the ability to make informed choices, understand the consequences of their actions, and gain a sense of their own values. Each year, 150,000* people die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live. Help us to equip an entire generation with the confidence and ability to be the difference between lives lost and lives saved.

First aid training for your school staff Why your first aiders should train with St John Ambulance Teaching experience St John Ambulance is the UK’s leading first aid organisation and has been teaching and delivering life saving first aid for decades. We teach first aid to more people from more businesses and organisations than any other provider, with over 11,000 schools in England as customers.

Teaching expertise As co-authors of the award winning First Aid Manual, the UK’s only fully authorised guide, we set the standard for first aid training. Our professional trainers are qualified to the highest standards to make sure that your first aiders leave the course knowing exactly what to do – and have the confidence to do it – whenever emergency or non-emergency first aid is required.

What first aid training do you need? School employers are responsible for making sure that staff and students receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. Two St John Ambulance qualifications are approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for the provision of first aid in the workplace: • First aid at work: a comprehensive three-day course • Emergency first aid at work: a one-day course.

Every school is different so it’s vital to ensure that the training your first aiders receive is appropriate to your needs. Use the table below as a quick guide to assess what training courses may be appropriate. Alternatively, visit sja.org.uk/yourguide for more detailed help.

Our core first aid training is approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to meet legal first aid at work regulations. All our training courses are designed to help you meet industry regulatory requirements.

Keeping first aid skills refreshed with regular practice is essential. Free Annual refresher training, which is strongly recommended by the HSE, is available in the first year after gaining the First aid at work qualification, and is half price for the Emergency first aid at work qualification.

Health and safety training for your school staff

Health and safety legislation

Health and safety legislation The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 requires you to provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure, as far as is practical, the health and safety of all staff, students and visitors while at work. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 identify situations when health and safety training is important, such as: • for new employees • when there are new risks in the workplace • when risks have increased or changed • where skills may need updating or have become rusty. The Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977 and the Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations 1996 require that you consult staff or their representatives on health and safety issues. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, schools must carry out a fire risk assessment and have sufficient fire marshals available at all times. The HSE provides additional guidance specific to the health and safety of students and staff at hse.gov.uk/services/education

Key health and safety considerations Who is responsible for health and safety?

Have you carried out a risk assessment?

You must ensure someone competent is responsible for performing health and safety duties. This could be you, one or more members of staff, someone from outside your school or a combination of these.

A risk assessment helps you to identify all hazards so you can put in place measures to eliminate or reduce these risks. St John Ambulance training covers what sort of hazards should be considered and how to carry out an effective risk assessment. It also looks at how often risk assessments should be carried out.

Do you have a written policy? All schools with five or more members of staff must have a written health and safety policy which clearly describes: • how health and safety is managed • who is responsible for different aspects of health and safety • how duties should be performed.

Health and safety can seem complicated, but it needn’t be. St John Ambulance’s range of health and safety training is designed specifically to help you: understand your health and safety requirements • and meet your legal obligations • ensure the safety of staff, students and visitors. 24

You can be the difference – visit sja.org.uk

St John Ambulance training can help you produce a written policy that can be the difference, for instance ways to consult with your staff and school governors so they understand its relevance to them and engage with it.

Have all school employees received the appropriate information and training? For the safety of all staff, students and visitors to your school, you must provide clear instructions and information, along with appropriate training. See page 27 for guidance on what type of training your employees may need.

Do you have the appropriate health and safety supplies and equipment in place? You must ensure that your school is equipped with appropriate health and safety and first aid supplies. St John Ambulance provides a range of materials, from warning notices to fire extinguishers. Turn to page 35 for more information.

Supplies and equipment

Essential first aid supplies for your school First aid kits and consumables All workplaces are required by law to be equipped with a suitable number of appropriately stocked first aid kits. The British Healthcare Trade Association (BHTA) has determined the appropriate first aid kits and their contents for workplaces. You should ensure your workplace has the appropriate British Standards Institute (BSI) kit(s).

To see our full range of first aid kits, visit sja.org.uk/firstaidkits and for the consumable items you need to keep your kit in date and fully stocked, visit sja.org.uk/firstaidconsumables Please note that there may be occasions where having two kits may be better than one, especially in high risk areas. This will ensure you’re likely to carry the items you need in case of an emergency. If you have several Significant areas, using several smaller kits instead of fewer larger ones may be more practical.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Degree of hazard

How many significant areas does your workplace have?

How many Recommended employees minimum first aid per significant requirements* area?

Low hazard (eg. offices, shops, libraries)

Higher hazard (eg. light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, work involving harmful chemicals)

<25 A significant area is an individual floor or building, but we strongly recommend that a first aider can 25–50 get a kit and reach the casualty within 60 seconds of an initial call for assistance. >50 For example, if you have an office and a warehouse on the same site, this will be a minimum of two significant areas:

<5

Step 4:

Step 5:

At least one small kit

At least one medium kit

At least one large kit per 100 employees

At least one small kit

1) The office = low hazard 2) The warehouse = higher hazard Each area needs to be assessed on its own risks.

5–25

At least one medium kit

>25

At least one large kit per 25 employees

Step 6:

Previous Specific risk factors injury and illness records The new St John Ambulance workplace kits represent the minimum recommended cover for your workplace; do you have specific needs to fulfil your organisation’s risk assessment?

• Disabled employees • Existing health issues • High instances of specific injuries • Lone or remote workers • Members of the public on site* • Multiple floors or buildings • Multiple shifts • Number of first aiders available • Professional drivers
