Creation is a process. I would say my process is methodical and sometimes a little unorthodox. Every project starts with an idea, but it starts to take shape with a sketch. Sketches are blueprints for what's to come. Every artist has a tool that they feel comfortable using, something that helps bring to life their creative visions. The computer is a graphic designer's chisel. Many would argue that my generation has lost it's sense of craftsmanship—something so highly valued by our predecessors who worked frequently by hand. Beautiful craftsmanship is still possible in digital work and it's something that I strive for in every project. My name is Stjepan Ilich and I love to create.

Based off of one of my childhood favorite games, “Conservation” is a board game redesign of Pop’O’Matic Trouble by Hasbro. I wanted to make the game timeless and give the game more of a story or reason. In this version of the game, players need to move the endangered species safely to the conservation without being poached or having their habitat destroyed for resources. All the lettering, illustrations and patterns were hand-made. I was inspired by tribal patterns, old explorer sketch books and the movie Jumanji.

Road Etiquette is the idea of a Non-Profit, promoting safety on the roadways. It's designed to not only educate drivers, but all who enter the roadways, including cyclists and pedestrians. The challenge here was keeping it simple. Less is more, especially when trying to get a serious message across. This was the first time I drew directly into Illustrator for the icons and infographics not tracing sketches.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with bottle design. Cyrus Noble has been around since 1871. It is distilled in Kentucky and bottled in San Francisco. They lost their authentic look over the years. To recapture what I thought Cyrus Noble should be, I looked at their roots and incorporated into the design. I was inspired by old advertisements for the gold rush, the wild west, and San Francisco’s Edwardian and Victorian era. The logo was hand-lettered to give a personality to the brand.

With a multitude of catchy taglines, I felt that less was more— especially in a serious matter. When it comes to making something look real, there is nothing that looks more real than the real thing. My only regret in the making of this project was the smell of condoms and rotting banana's in my room. However, the cashiers face made it all worth it after I said, “It's going to be a fun night!”

This promotional booklet was made for the Black Keys Tour as a collectable. I first saw the two man band at Outside Lands and was impressed. I found my inspiration hearing about The Black Keys humble begginings in Ohio, cutting lawns to pay for studio equiptment. Their struggle was something I could relate to. I decided to give them a grungy hand made look because that's just simply who they are.

Walgreens was a callaborative packaging class based around the rebrand of the Walgreens instore brands. This was my first group project with other students. I've worked among groups professionally before at internships/ contract jobs but this was certainly a unique experience. I hand lettered the Walgreens logo along with the soda bottles. Main Street came about as an instore brand name because every town and city has a main street. The malt milk shake was invented at Walgreens. Ivar Pop Coulson was the man behind it, so it only felt right that our soda line be named after him.

This is a live project that I took on while making this book. I was asked by Marine Layer, a San Francisco clothing company located in the Marina district and Hayes Valley, to design some new tee's for their line. The mantra through out the duration of this project was Try Harder. Stari Grad is an old world inspired Condensed Slab Serif. The name of this display face literally translates to “old city” in Croatian. The cupping reflects the castle like forms found on the city walls. While having traditional roots, there is a modern touch of character. Perfect for the old world modernist headline.

When it comes to curves, it's all in the wrist. ElleVor is an original hand lettered script logo made for a friend of mine who is a photographer. She wanted a victorian style frame surrounding her name. I had never made something this feminine before and accepted the challenge. I was fortunate to be learning from a hand lettering master at the time, who's one of many specialties is script lettering. Erik helped me see what curves can be.

This was a client project for my local bicycle shop. Over a few months of hinting that there logo needed work they asked me to come up with something better. They envisioned an emblem with the letters MSC in a triangular configuration. I came back with several ideas including a sketch resembling a bicycle which is the one I developed further. I kept trying to make the — “S” the handle and it wasn't until Jessica said your bike is backwards that the logo fell into place taking it's final shape.
