Keeping Holy Week at St. Jean Vianney Holy week begins today with Passion [Palm] Sunday. During Holy Week the church celebrates the great Triduum, which means three days, reckoned from Holy Thursday evening through Easter Sunday evening. These are the great celebrations of Church life: Holy Thursday Evening Mass Of The Lord’s Supper; Thursday, March 28th, 7:00pm: this includes Holy Eucharist, the washing of the feet, and concludes with prayer vigil before the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00pm.

PRAYER REQUESTS Contact Mrs. Theresa Himel at 755.3709 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.
Good Friday Service: Friday, March 29th, 3:00pm: this service includes the Passion Account according to St. John, the Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion. Later that evening, the Vigil will continue around the Holy Cross from 6:30-9:00pm. Easter Saturday Vigil: Saturday, March 30th, 8:00pm: this includes the lighting of the New Fire, the Vigil Scriptures, Baptismal Initiation, Holy Eucharist. Easter Sunday: Sunday March 31st, 7:30, 9:30, and 11:30am Easter Eucharist. During the Triduum we attempt to ‘drop out’ of the normal, entertainment or distractions. We also keep the “Easter Fast”, which is a fast of anticipation of what is to come at Easter. These are like retreat days for the parish. If we keep these days at home, we can better celebrate them at Church. Make sure you are part of these days of worship at. St. Jean Vianney. IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, BRING THEM and help them learn about these important traditions of the Catholic Faith.
LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, Welcome to Holy Week. This is a decidedly Catholic week doing Catholic things throughout the days ahead. If you have never attended the Diocesan Chrism Mass, and can, I would urge you to try. It is held at the Cathedral on Wednesday of this week, 10:30am. It is during this Mass that the Bishop will bless the Oil of the Sick, Catechumens and Chrism, which will then be distributed to the parishes and institutions of the diocese. It is an inspiring service and you are most welcome to attend. The oils we use for the sacraments all year long come from this service each year. Of course, we will be doing the Catholic thing of the Triduum. This strange sounding name refers to the liturgical season that begins on Holy Thursday night, and concludes on Easter Sunday evening. These days encompass the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus in story, music, rituals, gestures, light, darkness, sound and silence. Keeping these days in church really make sense if we also try to keep them outside of Church at home. These are the days we Catholics “drop out” of the usual routine. The ordinary pleasures we defer for a few days allows us to focus on what the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ means for one’s life and for the world. So, I urge you to be with us for the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Thursday, March 28th, 7:00pm, with the washing of the feet, procession with the Blessed Sacrament, and Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00pm in Church. Good Friday Service includes the telling of the Passion of St. John, the Veneration of the Cross, Holy Communion. This is at 3:00pm on Friday, March 29th. There will be prayer before the Holy Cross from 7:00-8:30pm in Church. The Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 30th begins at 8:00pm with the Lighting of the New Fire, the Vigil Liturgy of the Word; the sacraments of initiation. Easter Sunday Masses, March 31st are at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30am with Baptisms. So, you can have a full plate being with the Church! I hope to see you off and on during this coming week. My thanks to all the parishioners who will make this week so special. Love,
