Our Parish Council Member Geralyn McCarthy accompanied four students, Luke Gleeson, Jess Gleeson, Russell Menezes and Chloe Adriano to the annual Archbishop’s Conversation with Student Leaders at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, Braybrook in March. The enthusiastic gathering was addressed by Archbishop Denis Hart who told of his personal faith journey before engaging in discussion with the student leaders. The event also involved inter-school conversations, prayer and reflection. The 2013 Archbishop’s Conversation with Student Leaders was a day of fellowship and discussion based on the themes inspired by the ‘Year of Grace.’ The discussion and feedback from the student leaders on the theme have helped contribute towards Archbishop Hart’s pastoral letter to young people which is released at Pentecost and is available in the Magazine Rack. Luke Gleeson, a Year 9 student and parishioner of St James the Apostle Parish, reflects: “I really enjoyed the experience of being able to connect aspects of my life with other leaders in different schools and also the archbishop. Learning about how other schools operated much like our community at Thomas Carr and also being amazed at all the experiences other schools had to offer to their students (e.g immersion experiences) was very interesting. When the archbishop talked to all of the students in attendance about his faith life, it was truly inspiring to see how he pulled through the various struggles in his life to become the man he is today. Finding out that his sister had died at an early age and yet he was still able to maintain a strong relationship with God was truly inspiring for me. Meeting with other students from Catholic secondary colleges was a great opportunity to find out how life in Thomas Carr was compared to those of schools such as Xavier and St Aloysius. I was surprised to see the similarities between our College and others around Melbourne in our social justice and liturgy groups. From this experience, I will take away key leadership skills I picked up from the other leaders I was able to associate with and also an enriched understanding of the journey to priesthood from the archbishop’s own experiences. The connections I have made with the archbishop and other leaders will give me the confidence to be a leader either at the college or our parish community of St James. Learning about the faith life of other schools will allow me to carry it on to members of Thomas Carr.”
