Dear Student I am delighted to welcome you to the MSc in Strategic Public Relations and Communication Management. Here at Stirling we have been teaching public relations since its inception in the UK in 1988, so you can be assured that our staff are professionally and academically experienced, committed and enthusiastic about the subject. We hope that you will have a happy and successful year at Stirling and that you take the opportunity to explore Scotland's nearby cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as the Highlands of Scotland which are on Stirling's doorstep. I am sure that your thoughts will soon turn to preparation for the forthcoming year. Should you wish to do some reading in advance good choices would include: Tench, R. & Yeomans, L. (Ed.) (2009) Exploring Public Relations, Prentice Hall. (You may be interested to learn that Liz Yeomans was a graduate of the Stirling MSc. Her book is targeted at undergraduates rather than postgraduates but is a very useful introduction. L'Etang, J. (2008) Public relations: concepts, practice and critique. Sage. Coombs, W. & Holladay, S. (2007). It's not just PR: public relations in society. Blackwell. Daymon, C. & Holloway, I. (2006) Qualitative research for public relations and marketing communications, Routledge. Cornelissen, J. (2008) Corporate communication: a guide to theory and practice. Sage.

In preparation for you joining the Masters programme in September, I have set out details of the Induction timetable for your information:Introductory Meeting (compulsory) - Tuesday 13 September @ 10 – 11.30am Room G18, Pathfoot Building. Welcome - Tuesday 13 September @ 12.30 – 1.30pm Room G18, Pathfoot Building. Library Induction - Tuesday 13 September @ 2 – 3pm Logie Lecture Theatre, Cottrell Building.

For those of you who are outside the UK it is very important that you start reading, watching and listening to British media as much as possible. This will not only help you improve your English, but will help you to understand more about cultural conventions and current issues in the UK. Specifically you will find it helpful to read some Scottish media, particularly The Glasgow Herald and The Scotsman. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to meeting you in September.
