Personality profile Results of pre-employment testing Stipan Marinović
The pre-employment test administered was a personality test providing an overview of the traits you posses. There were no right or wrong answers, and there are no high or low scores. This type of test is often used by employers who seek a right person for a certain job position and wish to avoid being fooled by a good performance on a job interview or an overblown resume. It is hard to predict which trait would make you more employable – since different job positions require people of different personality types e.g. a job in sales is better performed by an extroverted and convincing person, but these traits might not be considered an asset when applying for a clerical job.

those connected with the way you relate to other people (introversion/extroversion, compassion/mercilessness, inflexibility/ability to adapt, persuasiveness/un-persuasiveness, preference toward team work/preference for independent work) those connected with the way you approach work and/or working environment in general (aggressiveness/passivity, affinity toward skepticism/promotion) those connected with decision making processes (decisive/indecisive, analytical/intuitive)
other personality traits that can be significant for the way you function in a working environment (whether you are self-confident or need reassurance, organized/unorganized, like change/avoid change, patient/impatient).
26 personality traits were tested (see previous chapter) each personality trait is tested along with its opposite trait – so there are 13 opposite pairs of personality traits presented (obviously, you’re either more introverted or extroverted – you can’t be both) for each pair there is a scale from -12 to 12 points – if your result is negative (e.g. -6), this means that your results show that the first trait in the pair is dominant in your personality; if it is positive (e.g. 6) the second trait is dominant the strength of the dominant trait is depicted by the number assigned to it – e.g. if your score for the first pair is -12, this means that you are highly introverted, if it is 12, this means that you are highly extroverted the traits you posses are defined in the text, but it is important to keep in mind that there are no high or low scores – being unpersuasive doesn’t make you a bad person, it just means that perhaps you are not an ideal person to work in advertizing most of the items testing these traits were based on a behavioral premise – that the way you chose to behave in certain situations can tell us something about your personality. That is why it was important to approach the test with absolute honesty.

Traits explained If you are introverted... …this means that you are a quiet, reserved individual. You tend to keep to yourself and you do not like to be in the center of attention. You will rarely try to meet or approach other people on your own. You’re not the one to chat with strangers on the street and you probably wouldn’t be a good salesperson. If you are extroverted… …this means that you are a social, outgoing individual. You very rarely keep to yourself the things that are on your mind – you share your thoughts and feelings with a lot of people. You feel comfortable when approaching and/or meeting other people and do often enjoy being the center of attention. If you are unorganized… …this means that your desk may often be messy and that you might need some help in memorizing things (like due-dates, scheduled meetings, etc.). Unorganized individuals are often poor planners and as you might already know this is not a desirable trait in a lot of clerical occupations – you lack structure and order needed to perform the tasks associated with this type of work. If you are organized… …this means that you do things in a systematic and structured manner. Even if your desk seems messy, you’re on top of things – you have a place for everything and everything has to be in its place. You tend to plan things and then you work according to plan. This might make you a more desirable employee, at least in the eyes of the employer. If you are indecisive…
…this means that you have difficulties making decisions and sticking to what you decided. You often hesitate before making a move in life and then you tend to re-think decision you’ve made. This sometimes leads into situations in which others influence your choices – especially if you respect them, or find them to appear more confident in themselves. If you are decisive… …this means that you are quite confident in your ability to analyze a situation you’re in and make a right decision. This might mean that once you’ve made a decision you tend to stick with it and only very strong evidence would encourage you to change your mind. This makes you seem more confident in the eyes of those around you, so you tend to have influence over them and their decisions as well. If you are intuitive… …this means you tend to make decisions based on a ‘gut feeling’. This can be a good trait – especially when you’re in a situation where you lack actual data that might tell you precisely what to do. Still, you do tend to get frustrated in situations when you have to (e.g. because it is in your job description) analyze a lot of data – even if you already ‘know’ (have a feeling) what would be the right course of action. If you are analytical… …this means that you won’t make a decision until you have all the facts and figures straight. You often make a list of pros and cons associated with the things/situations/people connected with your decision. This can be a good trait – especially in those occupations that require patience and detailed analysis. Still, this trait can also lead to ‘analysis paralysis’ – situations in which you simply can’t decide because you feel that you do not posses enough information to act or both options have equally desirable traits.
If you are inflexible… …this means you’re closed minded and rigid when faced with new things/situations or those things/situations you’re not comfortable with. You do not like when ‘rules change’, and you are not the one to change an opinion just because those around you disagree. This sometimes means that ‘it’s your way or the highway’ when it comes to dealing with others. If you are adaptable… …this means that you’re open-minded and flexible when it comes to dealing with new things/situations. You are open to compromising and you are often willing to change ‘your ways’ to accommodate others. In relations with others, balance and harmony tend to be more important than getting your way. If you are merciless… …this means that you will do whatever you consider to be the right thing to do – regardless of the consequences or the feelings of others. If somebody ‘steps on your toes’ they should watch out – you tend to be really harsh and unforgiving when people hurt you in any way. In the work environment – this is sometimes a positive trait, because you’re one of those individuals who will get things done – even if these are unpleasant things to do. If you are compassionate... …this means that you are a kind and considerate person. You are warm and empathetic – and people often turn to you for support. You tend to be forgiving, even when somebody has hurt you and you tend to stick up for others if you feel that they’ve been treated unfairly. This makes you a nice person, but a complicated staff member. If you are patient... …this means that you don’t mind waiting for things/people/task completion. Patience often makes you a good listener, so people tend to share their problems and issues with you. You provide the
support they might need. Still, extremely patient people tend to be afraid of pressure – they are not good at dealing with stress related with due-dates and situations in which things need to get done ‘ASAP’. If you are impatient… …this means that you hate waiting – you want everything to happen right away and all the tasks completed ‘yesterday’. This can be a very good trait in the working environment – because you will push others and pressure them into acting immediately. Extremely impatient people are usually those who ‘lead’ the project to its completion. If you are persuasive… …this means that you can easily convince people to see things your way. You are that person who gets a good grade on the oral exam – even when you’re not completely confident (inside) that what you are saying is correct – you have the ability to seem confident in what you’re saying. Extremely persuasive people are willing to take risks when trying to convince others – and they often succeed in doing so. If you are unpersuasive… …this means that you’re not really convincing when it comes to getting the people to see things your way. This might be caused by different factors – perhaps you are not confident in you presentation or communication skills, perhaps you just don’t feel good in a situation when you are the one who needs to convince others. In any case you wouldn’t be a very good salesperson or an advertiser – if you are extremely unpersuasive you probably couldn’t convince a person holding a bottle of wine to buy a bottle opener from you. If you need reassurance… …this means that you are not self-confident. You need others to reassure you that you’re doing well, that you are good, nice, pleasant, and right. You might seem shy and timid and you probably wouldn’t be a
good project leader unless you have a group of people supporting you and reassuring you that you are doing the right thing. If you are extremely in need of reassurance you will seek it before making any decisions and after making them. For your employer this means that he/she might have to tell you that you’re doing a great job every now and then, so you don’t fall apart. If you are self-confident… …this means that you don’t need other people telling you that you’re doing the right thing or that you are right. Although you might seem arrogant – this trait is not necessarily connected with arrogance – you are simply confident and for the same reason neither timid nor shy. You tend to push your ideas forward and your solutions as well – you know these are good. You are probably right! If you are an ‘independent’ worker... …this means that you work better alone than in a group. In the extreme cases people who prefer working independently can’t stand others checking their work or trying to organize the way they do things. This trait tends to be connected with inability to have faith that others can contribute to what one is doing or with distrust in the skill that others might posses. If you are a ‘team player’… …this means that you work best when you work in a group. This doesn’t mean that you need a group to support you or that you lack confidence in your own performance. It only means that in group projects or whenever team is assigned to do something you’ll do an excellent job. If you are passive… …this means that you are not aggressive or confrontational. You are an easy-going individual. In the context of this test this also means that you are not the one to take initiative in the work Page 6
environment. You’ll get things done – but most of the time only if somebody tells you to do it. If you are aggressive… …this means that you tend to be very assertive when it comes to what you think is right or when you want something done. Your colleagues might perceive you as a ‘pushy’ person, but they can be sure that when some injustice is done you won’t be quiet. People with this personality trait tend to protest the changes in the workplace which they view as unfair and are those who confront their bosses about it. If you are the one to avoid change… …this means that you seek stability in things you do. You enjoy having a daily routine and if something changes (even a good something) you sometimes feel disoriented. In the work environment this sometimes means that you will not try to change even those thing (rules, procedures, etc.) that you’re not satisfied with. People who avoid change often stay in the same company for as long as they can – some even till retirement. If you like change… …this means that you are probably a creative person who will try to do things differently even if procedures in place work just fine. Lack of change bores you! Employers can count on you to come up with new and creative ways of doing/dealing with things. Still, due to your desire for change employers will probably be aware of the fact that you might leave them – sooner or later. If you are a skeptic… … this means that you’re not easily convinced that something is of some sort – you need tons of evidence to even start considering that this might be true (e.g. something you hear in a commercial). Even then – you’re not a person who goes around trying to convince others to accept that opinion. In the context of work environments this means that you
are not a person easily convinced in the idea that your company is the best, has best products/services, etc. You’re not a person who gets overly exited by company’s mottos/promotional paroles. If you are a promoter …this means that you are not skeptical in approaching things/people/ideas. A person who wants to convince you/sell something to you doesn’t have to produce as much evidence or arguments as they might have to in order to convince a skeptic. If you e.g. see a toothpaste commercial that seems convincing, you’ll probably recommend that brand to other people – even before you try it out yourself. In the context of work environment this means that you tend to buy into company’s motto – and you’ll probably serve the company by providing good PR services – even if these are uncalled for.
