TechSteps is a program that gives students step by step instructions on how to use Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) to create a product. I suggest looking over the lessons at each grade level and deciding which ones will best suit your curriculum. Pleasefollow the steps listed below. First, you will go to the website and type in your Account Id, User Id and Password. Your account Id is wdcs and your User Id should be your first initial and your whole last name. If this is your first time, you will need to go to the bottom where it says “Forgot Your Password?” and type in your email addressso they can send you the information to log in to your account. The next thing you want to do is click on the “setup” button at the top. Once you click on that button you will see the page to the right. Once there you will want to check the General Settings. It wants to know what version of Windows are you using (XP, Vista, or Windows7) and what version of Microsoft Office you are running (Office 2003, 2007, or 2010). Click “Done” at the bottom when finished. Now you can click on “Project Browse” at the top.
Below you will see the projects page. On this page you will need to select your grade level and then start looking at the six projects that are available. Theseprojects range from doing pen pals through email to creating and using formulas in Excel. The yellow arrow below is pointing to the “show me” link that gives you a short video describing what the students will be doing during the project. The Techsteps Scope and Sequenceis a great resource to see what skills you will be teaching. To actually accessthe project you will need to click on the “Student Activity Book” link. This will open a small window to the right of your screen (see below). Click here to flip the pagesin the activBook.
Flip the pagesin the book and follow the directions step by step. If you see something written in green, that means you can click on it and it will tell you how to do it! Once you or the students are finished with the project it can be saved to a folder on the server called TechSteps. You can accessit through the My Computer Icon on the desktop or the My Computer on the start menu.
