Almost 30 years later, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron’s top movie hits is becoming a television series and that’s the truth.

The seriocomic adventure “ True Lies” premieres in its weekly form Wednesday, March 1, on CBS and Paramount+, basically remaking the 1994 film as the opening episode. Steve Howey (“Shameless,” “Reba”) assumes Schwarzenegger’s role as Harry Tasker, a super-spy whose wife Helen (Ginger Gonzaga of “SheHulk: Attorney at Law,” inheriting Jamie Lee Curtis’ earlier part) believes he’s a mild-mannered computer salesman. Once she learns what his real job is, she’s enlisted by his intelligence agency, and they frequently travel the world on missions – while tr ying to prevent their children (Annabella Didion, Lucas Jaye) from finding out.

“It’s the hardest job I’ve had yet,” states the good-humored Howey, who has no illusions about possibly being mistaken for Schwarzenegger as he generates his own “True Lies” under the leadership of executive prodicer Matt Nix (“Burn Notice”). “ This experience has taught me a lot about having an idea and then executing it,” Howey reflects, “because that doesn’t always pan out. Ever y episode of this gets better And we get more tired.”

“I didn’t want to be influenced by Jamie Lee’s iconic performance. And then, I had to buy the DVD off eBay ... and a DVD player. It was a whole ‘thing.’ ”

With Omar Miller (“CSI: Miami”), Erica Hernandez and Mike O’Gorman also featured, “True Lies” has been in development for TV since 2010, and Gonzaga reasons that it’s “good that it’s been a while.” Since Cameron also had other commitments (including the now-Oscar-nominated “Avatar: The Way of Water”), his longtime associate Rae Sanchini had more firsthand involvement in the casting; Tom Arnold, of the original movie, is a guest star on the show.

Being built for action, “True Lies” can put its stars at risk, as Howey learned close to the end of filming the first season.

“I was fighting a stunt man,” he reports, “and we did it once and it went great. Then we did it again, and he pretended to bounce his face off a wall and as he went back, my left hand went for ward into his neck, and it snapped my left ring finger back to the point where my nail hit my knuckle. And I finished the stunt, and when they yelled ‘Cut!,’ I snapped it back. Then I got an X-ray and sure enough, I broke the bone. And I thought, ‘ There’s a reason you have a stunt guy. Use him.’ ”

Phillies look for Schwarber to muscle up again in 2023

For baseball fans, spring doesn’t begin until the crack of the bat can be heard in major league ballparks throughout Florida and Arizona, signifying that another season has arrived.

For the Philadelphia Phillies, the 2023 season comes with expectations. In 2022, the 87-win Phillies rode a late season surge through the playoffs to the World Series, despite finishing third in the National League East. Now all eyes are on them to see if they can pull it off again.

At the center of those expectations has to be Kyle Schwarber

The burly left fielder with the vicious lefty home run cut was a force to behold last year his first in the City of Brotherly Love, slamming a league-leading 46 homers and driving in 94 runs largely from the leadoff spot. Of course, he batted only .218 and struck out an even 200 times but he more than made up for that with his power and his 86 walks, which upped his on-base percentage to .323 and his OPS to .827. And he even managed to steal 10 bases in 11 attempts.

In the postseason, it was more of the same: six homers and 10 RBIs in 17 games with that same .218 average and a .937 OPS. He was also three for three in steal attempts. A model of consistency if there ever was one.

If the Phils are to hope to repeat as NL champs, they’ll need similar output from Schwarber to get them past the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets in the East. He and the Phillies can be seen in action against the Boston Red Sox Thursday, March 2, in a preseason game airing from Fort Myers, Fla.

‘A Star Is Born’ again as Bradley Cooper meets Lady Gaga

No matter what version it’s been told in, “A Star Is Born” always has done especially well by its female stars. The love stor y of a fading talent and a rising one is as durable as ever in its 2018 retelling – which Freeform shows Tuesday, Feb.

28 – but it can be argued that it’s the one that gets it the most right for its male star, too.

That could be because Bradley Cooper also co-wrote, co-produced and directed the update, but whatever the reason, he gives as good as he gets acting-wise from Lady Gaga, in a hugely impressive performance as a singersongwriter discovered by the burnout of a rock icon played by Cooper.

The performers feel absolutely authentic together, and while the Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand versions in particular have their timeless pleasures, this “A Star Is Born” gets around Hollywood trappings to present the genuine grit of the music world. Also helpful is an extremely well-chosen supporting cast that includes Andrew Dice Clay as Gaga’s father, the always-great Sam Elliott as Cooper’s brother and manager, and comedian Dave Chappelle as a musical pal of Cooper.

One of the tricks to “A Star Is Born” really working is to make the downward slide of the male protagonist convincing. That’s a tall order for a performer, since he purposely has to look raggedy and throw all vanity (or most of it, anyway) to the wind. Cooper goes for that fully here, and it’s a huge asset, since his looking worse only makes his leading lady look better

Checking in with PEYTON MANNING

Stadiums are a topic with which Peyton Manning is very familiar He’s certainly played in enough of them in his combined 25 years as a high school, college and pro quarterback.

So when that became the subject of the premiere episode of his Monday History series “History’s Greatest of All Time With Peyton Manning,” the five-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champ had two that held particularly fond personal memories for him.

“I played in the Superdome in high school, in the NFL,” the New Orleans native says. “I used to go there a ton as a kid when my dad (Archie) was the quarterback for the Saints when it opened in the mid’70s. I used to go down on that Superdome field after the game. When my dad was getting dressed, me and my brother Cooper would play one-on-one 100-yard football.”

And then in college, the former Tennessee Volunteer All American adds, “Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, it’s a hundred years old, great history there. That was one that was very special to me. ”

As for his current role as host and executive producer of the hourlong series that counts down the top 10 greatest in various categories, from sports cars and inventions to daredevils and titans of industry, Manning says he came away surprised by some of the rankings and hopes that it will spark discussion among viewers.

“I was kind of learning as I was sort of talking into the cameras,” he says, “and I can remember having reactions like we hope people watching the show will have. They’ll agree on some, they’ll disagree some. ... Hopefully that means they’re watching if they’re debating it.”

Favorite movie: “ ‘Forrest Gump’ kind of jumps out. Sports movies – that’s another potential top 10 GOAT (greatest of all time) categor y. ... But you’ve got to throw ‘The Natural’ in there, you’ve got to throw ‘Bull Durham’ in there. But if I had to pick one, I’d probably go with ‘Forrest Gump.’ ”

Favorite musical artist: “Countr y music is kind of my favorite and it’s just hard to go against the king, George Strait. But I got to know so many of these guys and they’ve become friends, from Kenny Chesney to Eric Church, so I like all of them. But if you’re asking me for one concert to go to, I’d probably go with George Strait.”
