I hadn’t heard of the grandparent scam when my father called me a few years ago to report that my son was in jail, out of state. My dad had been asked to wire bail money and not tell me. Dad was all but unshakable in his belief that he had actually talked to my son. Alarmed, I called my son, who was safe at his home. What happened to my father is not uncommon. Fortunately, he did not wire any money. The grandparent scam exploits loving concern and uses a sense of urgency to get a victim to pay, thinking he or she is helping in an emergency. In a twist, now a “courier” will come and pick up your cash, due to COVID-19 concerns. “There are a million variations,” says Susan Grant, director of consumer protection and privacy for the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America, “but the common thread is that someone you know has an urgent problem and needs your financial help.” How it works You’re contacted by someone pos-

ing as a panicked family member or friend — or perhaps a lawyer or law enforcement officer calling on their behalf. The claim involves an emergency such as a car accident, arrest or car breakdown. But they need money, quickly. They may beg that the incident be kept secret or claim that there is a gag order. It used to be that the scammer would start out saying, “Grandma?” or “Grandpa?” hoping to elicit an emotional response. Now criminals may check social media sites for names, locations and other information to make the call seem legitimate. Whatever the situation, you’ll be asked for money, says Cristina Miranda, a consumer education specialist with the Federal Trade Commission. That’s when you should break contact, Miranda says. You can say that you need to verify some information or you can simply hang up (or stop responding to email or texts). If you hand over money, it’s highly unlikely you’ll get it back. Spring gardening for cool/wet periods Here are some tips to keep in mind as we work our way through this current weather pattern: Cool season vegetables like lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, radishes, etc. love this weather so that’s why you may be seeing more growth than normal. Warm season plants on the other hand (such as tomatoes, peppers, green beans and corn), not so much. They need warmer soils than we have right now to thrive. Avoid the temptation to try to force growth with additional fertilizer as growth will resume when the temperatures come up. Not only does this weather limit the top growth of warm season plants, abundant moisture can also slow their root growth. Keep this in mind if we transition quickly from cool and wet to hot, sunny and dry. Small plants may need a bit more water than

Home Grown KEITH REED you expect because of the limited size of the root system. To further complicate this, wilt from too much water can look very similar to wilt from not enough water so take the time to investigate the moisture conditions of your soil below the surface.

Plant diseases are almost always caused by fungi. While some fungal species favor cool wet environments like we are currently in, the diseases that typically cause the most harm start showing up as the temperature warms. Selecting varieties that are

known to work well in our area and/or have been bred for disease resistance is one of the best things you can do to limit disease. Tomatoes (and their close relative peppers) are prone to soil – borne diseases than are transmitted through leaf to soil contact. It will help reduce disease movement if you keep the lower leaves pruned off. Reducing soil splash is another benefit of mulching, but the soil is already cool, so hold off on your mulch for a little while

longer. If you have a high value crop that you wish to protect against as much disease as possible, you’ll want to go ahead and treat with the approved fungicide before you see signs of problems. Two common examples are black spot on roses and powdery mildew on peas. Fungicides work much better as protectants than they do as curative, i.e., after the

disease is already present. Most plants that received significant ice and/or freeze damage but are still alive are now growing quickly. Don’t be afraid to selectively prune the new growth to encourage the plant to fill in, especially the plant needs to fill voids from dead spots. Clipping off just a bit of the growing point will encourage the lower parts of the stem to

DEAR DAVE: Do you know any details about the new government program designed to help homeowners refinance? I could sure use the help, because I lost my job last year and have since had to accept a new job that pays a lot less, which is making it very difficult to continue making my monthly mortgage payments. ANSWER: The new program, which was announced by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (fhfa.gov) at the end of April, is aimed at helping millions of lowand moderate-income homeowners who have missed out on the continuing refinancing boom to finally get a chance to take advantage of today’s near-re-
