Those who paid for the seminar were then told it was only a “beginner” course, and they were then pitched “additional products and services that can cost as much as $41,297.” For its part, Zurixx issued a press statement reiterating that the FTC did not shut down the firm’s operations and promised to work openly and directly with federal and state officials to reach a “positive outcome.”

In October, the Federal Trade Commission won a temporary restraining order against Zurixx LLC that prohibits the firm from “making unsupported marketing claims” to tout its nationwide seminars. The company used endorsements from “Flip or Flop” stars Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead as well as “Love it or List It” co-host Hilary Farr to lure customers. Importantly, though, the FTC did not accuse the three celebs of any wrongdoing. According to federal prosecutors, Zurixx would offer free workshops

Every home can use a bit of TLC every now and then, but spiffing it up doesn’t need to break the bank! Projects as simple as a quick power wash or paint touch-up can make a big improvement in the appearance of your home. If you’re looking to make some simple improvements, try these quick and easy upgrades - they’ll refresh your place without putting a strain on your wallet. Tidy up Give your home its sparkle back with a quick scrubbing! Tackle areas you don’t normally clean to make your home’s interior look like new. Buff out scuffs on the wall with melamine foam and pay attention to your trim. It’s also a good idea to wipe down your appliances to remove spots. If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, you can hire a professional house cleaner to help. According to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide, you can expect to pay between $115 and $235. Touch up your paint Has it been a while since your last paint refresh? Whether you’d like to change the color of your living room or just need a few quick touchups here and there, paint can make a huge difference. Touchups
are pretty simple to DIY, but for extensive interior paint jobs or exterior work, it’s a good idea to talk to a pro. On average, homeowners report paying between $965 and $2,740 to have a home interior painted, and they report paying between $1,710 and $3,975 to have a home exterior painted. Upgrade your hardware Something as simple as changing out your cabinet hardware and door knobs can make a big impact - and usually for under $100 or so, depending on the number of cabinets and doors you’re working with and the hardware you choose. The best part? You can complete most hardware upgrades on your own! Get rid of clutter Clutter can quickly turn an ideal home into a stressful and messy space. To beat the chaos, clean out your closets and drawers and keep

Tree pruning basics We will soon be approaching the ideal time of year to do corrective pruning on most ornamental trees. Exceptions are those plants that might be a little bit cold sensitive including fruit trees and evergreens; these should be pruned in the very early spring after the threat of the deepest cold has passed. Please keep the following tips in mind if you do your own tree care. First and foremost is safety. Tree pruning or removal can be dangerous in a number of ways. Always make sure you have a thorough understanding of proper chainsaw operation and maintenance. If any piece of equipment screams read the operator’s manual, it is the chainsaw. Not only will the manual
Home Grown KEITH REED provide helpful tips for keeping the saw itself in top shape, you will also learn proper technique to prevent injury from kickback, premature felling, or damage caused by swinging limbs. Ladders can be almost as dangerous as chainsaws (and the combination of the two can be lethal). ALWAYS check for nearby power lines and other utilities. Also think about worse case scenarios when it comes to ladder placement. Ask yourself “what happens if I fall off” or “which way do I go if this limb

falls and takes the ladder out”? This thought process should even be a part of tree work when you are standing on solid ground as large limbs can impart more damage than the untrained person can possibly imagine. The size of limbs high up in a tree can easily be underestimated. Keep in mind that a cubic foot of wood can weigh 70-80 pounds. Don’t overlook key safety items like eye protection, long sleeves, and gloves. Also, if you have overhead wires
close by, verify they will not be in the way of a falling limb as you prune. Trees should not be pruned just for the sake of pruning. Remove limbs only on an as-needed basis. Examples include dead or diseased wood, suckers or “water spouts,” limbs crossing or rubbing on each other, and structural pruning for small trees to make sure they develop a strong structure. OSU Fact Sheet HLA-6415 Training Young Shade and Ornamental Trees and EPP-7323 Managing Storm-Damaged Trees provide detailed information on correct procedure. At one time, it was thought that applying tar or “pruning paint” would help tree cuts to heal properly. Research has

house tour on Oct. 27. King began his work in Belleville after he married the daughter of a local businessman, Audrey Nash. King designed homes for her relatives and business associates of her father. Mares’ home was built for William Huxel and his wife in 1955. Huxel owned a brickyard in East St. Louis. A brick path outside leads to the front door. Other than where Mares laid carpet, brick makes up the majority of the flooring in the house. King built clusters of houses on the east and west ends of Belleville. you know it’s not just a contractor house,” Meyer says. Mares’ home lies between the edge of a forest and a dead-end street. He says the style of the house reminds him of his upbringing. Mares was born and raised in Maastricht, a city on the southern tip of the Netherlands. His home has one level with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The house features a finished basement with a bar similar to ones in other King houses. When guests walk through the door, they’re immediately met with a large chandelier overhanging stairs to the basement and backyard. In addition to the outside deck that Mares constructed himself, he also built a playhouse for his son.
Although Mares had to make several refurbishments, he says the house had good bones. One of the reasons Mares says he likes his house is because it looks more European than American. This house feels

the backyard where a newly constructed deck (built by Mares) wraps around the expanse of a saltwater pool. Many of King’s designs have flat roofs, fireplaces, large cathedral-like ceilings and open spaces, according to Margaret Meyer of the Belleville Historical Society. There are certain aspects of King’s designs, but there are no two alike, Meyer says. The Belleville Historical Society began a search in 2012 for every King house in Belleville. They’ve found 70 houses so far, four in the past year. “My friends always talk about how it’s an Easter egg hunt – I’m always out there looking,” Meyer says.
