Unlock some memories and kick it into high gear with NBC’s newest competition series, “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge.”

Premiering Tuesday, May 30, the unscripted show is equal parts “nostalgia and creativity” (per NBC) as each contestant overhauls one of their most beloved and memorable vehicles, ultimately transforming it from an average automobile into their dream car. Hosted by “Top Gear’s” Rutledge Wood and featuring a panel of car-loving celebrity guests, “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” is inspired by childhood fun and a healthy dose of friendly competition.

NBC describes its new 10-episode competition as follows: “Each episode will invite two passionate car fans and Hot Wheels lovers into the Chrome Zone, where they will face off in each transforming an ordinary vehicle into an extraordinary Hot Wheels showstopper, inspired by personal stories and pop culture touchstones. Working alongside a team of automotive magicians known as ‘The Car Pool,’ the two Superfans will manufacture their designs in high-tech, decked-out garages.” There is also a chance to raise the stakes via “the Inspirationator 5000, a larger-than-life vending machine that will rev up in each episode to present the Superfans with a twist in the road.”

While Wood acts as host, he will surely not be the only familiar face seen during the wild ride. Among the celebrity judges making an appearance on “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” are “Community” and “The Soup’s” Joel McHale; comedian and star of the recently finished sitcom “Black-ish,” Anthony Anderson; WWE Superstar Ettore Ewen, better known by the moniker Big E; and

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star and “America’s Got Talent” host Terry Crews.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, two famous car lovers are also welcomed to the show’s premiere season as guest judges: former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno and star of the Fast and Furious saga, Sung Kang.

Leno, who also hosts the web series “Jay Leno’s Garage,” is the proud owner of roughly 180 cars and 160 motorcycles, valued at more than $52 million. Widely recognized as one of the most knowledgeable car fanatics in Hollywood, Leno will bring his insight and interest to “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge” as he assesses the final products presented by the eager contestants.

As for Kang, who originated the role of Han Lue in the third Fast and Furious film, subtitled “Tokyo Drift” (2006), the actor has collected several custom cars over the years. These include a Nissan 240SX, a 1967 Mustang Fastback and the 1973 Datsun 240Z he restored himself and which he “affectionately refers to as ‘Fugu Z,’ according to the Rubber B website, which featured Kang in a promotional profile for the Swiss watch brand.

Corie Henson, executive vice-president of unscripted programming for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, announced her excitement for the program in a statement, saying, “Everyone remembers their first car, the life experiences they had and the friends who came along for the ride. Hot Wheels is a legendary brand with broad appeal that has created a space for imaginations to run free. We are so thrilled to partner with Mattel to combine this nostalgia with fantastical, extreme car transformations.”

Filmed in front of a live studio audience at the Gaines’ Silos shopping complex in Waco, Texas, this new baking competition takes a different approach to the usual season-long competition format, instead welcoming a rotation of guest chefs during its duration. Each episode, Gaines welcomes five baking enthusiasts to the studio stage, offering them the opportunity to craft their best dishes for a panel of guest judges, including both Andrew Zimmern (“Family Dinner”) and Zoë François (“Zoë Bakes”). One winning dish will be chosen each episode, and in the finale, the five winners from previous episodes will return to compete, vying for the title of Baking Champion, the $100,000 grand prize and the chance to have their winning confection join the summer menu at Magnolia’s Silos Baking Company.

Owned by Gaines, the Silos Baking Company has been running since 2016, offering sweets and treats such as biscuits, muffins and cookies to visitors and shoppers at the Silos. Many of the recipes were developed by Gaines herself, including “the prize pig” — a savory bacon and cheddar biscuit. A designer first and foremost, many of the owner’s concoctions bear fun names like “the shiplap cupcake.”

While this will be the designer’s first competitive baking show, it is far from her first experience working on television. Joanna hosted “Fixer Upper” and its off-shoots alongside her husband, Chip, who also makes the occasional appearance in this latest venture.

Aside from that, Gaines is also the co-founder of Magnolia (and its associated Magnolia Network and Magnolia Journal, of which she is also editor-in-chief), she is a New York Times bestselling author of multiple cookbooks, and, unsurprisingly, Joanna is quite the cook herself, previously having filmed an in-home special with the Food Network, “At Home With Joanna,” in which viewers watched as she made family favorites like zucchini bread, chili, chocolate cookies and more. She now hosts “Magnolia Table With Joanna Gaines,” much in the same vein, alongside this fledgling competition.

Marcus Ericsson looks to continue Indy500 success

If you’re a fan of motorsport racing, then Marcus Ericsson is sure to ring a bell.

Born on September 2, 1990, in Kumla, Sweden, Ericsson currently competes in the NTT IndyCar Series, and since 2020 has been driving the No.8 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing.

However, like all talented drivers, there is always the starting line.

Ericsson began his racing career at the early age of nine, competing in go-kart racing, and working his way up the European ranks. Gaining experience and confidence, he eventually would move up to single-seater racing in 2007. Ericsson would go on that year to win the Swedish Formula BMW Championship, officially kick-starting his professional racing career.

Following a successful rookie debut, he competed in various Formula Three series races, coming third place in 2008, and finally winning the British Formula Three Championship the following year. This would pave the track to a higher level of competition for Ericsson; joining the Formula One feeder series, GP2. After a successful three years competing in the GP2 Series, and finishing the 2013 campaign as a runner-up, it marked a pivotal moment in the Swedes racing career.

Lester Holt caters an ‘NBC Nightly News’-cast to youngsters

Q: It’s very clever how there’s an edition of “NBC Nightly News” for kids. How long has that been running? — Evelyn Morse, via e-mail

A: It began as a venture for NBC News’ YouTube channel in the spring of 2020, and that fall, the network also started adding it to its on-air weekend lineup for young viewers. Weeknight anchor Lester Holt hosts the program, which uses the resources of the full news division; a recent edition had reports by Anne Thompson and Erin McLaughlin, also frequent contributors to the evening broadcasts.

Q: I know Steve McQueen and Robert Vaughn were both in “Bullitt” and “The Towering Inferno.” Were they both in any other movies together? — Jack Shawn, Grove City, Ohio

A: Yes, and it was a classic that did much for both of their careers. They were two of “The Magnificent Seven” in the 1960 Western that adapted the Japanese film “Seven Samurai,” about protectors hired by the residents of an oppressed village.

One of the great movie trivia games is to ask someone to name all seven actors who played the “Seven.” So that you’re prepared for the next time that happens, the others were (in alphabetical order) Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, Horst Buchholz, James Coburn and Brad Dexter. Bronson, Coburn and McQueen appeared together again for the same director — John Sturges — three years later in “The Great Escape.”

Q: Will “The $100,000 Pyramid” be back this summer? — Carol Anderson, Antioch, Calif.

A: It will. The seventh season of the ABC game-show revival premieres July 9, and host Michael Strahan tweeted several weeks ago that it has been taped fully already. That’s not a surprise, particularly with games that are hosted by people who have other full-time jobs … in Strahan’s case, that being “Good Morning America,” of course.

A block of time over several weeks is carved out for production of an entire season of the contest (which really is only a couple of months for “Pyramid”) to be accomplished. In fairness, though, the number of “Pyramid” games is twice the number of episodes, since two complete games are played over the course of any given hour of the program.

Q: I remember a show called “She Spies,” but I can’t remember which network it was on. Can you help? — Brad Carmichael, Buffalo, N.Y.

A: Though NBC aired the first several episodes in the summer of 2002, the espionage show actually was made for first-run syndication. Lasting two seasons, it starred Natasha Henstridge, Natashia Williams and Kristen Miller as criminals turned government operatives.

NBC had a production investment in the series, explaining why that network took the lead on putting it out to the public when it debuted. However, MGM Television also was a major financier of the program and used its auspices to syndicate the show to affiliates of other networks as well.

Q: Is it true that a “Harry Potter” TV series is being planned? — Chris Davis, via e-mail

A: It was announced as a part of the plan for the relaunch of the former HBO Max as just the single-named Max. The concept is to dramatize the seven J.K. Rowling “Potter” books, which already were made into enormously popular movies, into new series … apparently with one book covered per season.
