bahrain A n i s l a n d r i c h i n h i s t o ry Bahrain which literally means “two seas” and referred to by the Greeks as “ Tylos”, is one of the most historically rich countries in the Middle East. Known in ancient times as Dilmun, Bahrain has been an important center of trade since the 3rd millennium BC. Apart from being a transshipment point between Arabia and India, it was also famous for the pearling activity conducted in the waters surrounding the islands in the ancient world. An archipelago in the Arabian Gulf off the coast of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain has a causeway that connects two of its main islands - Bahrain and Al Muharraq. Today Bahrain is perceived as a gateway to the Middle East, the region’s key financial capital that’s constantly redefining itself on the global map.

Harking back to the glory of the ancient Dilmun era, this five thousand year old island used to be the region’s key political and social centre. Muharraq was Bahrain’s capital until 1923, a key centre for trade and commerce and a prime hub for the fishing industry and pearling.
