25 January 2019
We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and wish you the very best for 2019. Since then, another congregation has come and gone. Durham was full of pride and joy as the graduates shook the Chancellor’s hand and were confirmed in their degrees, and we are all obviously delighted to welcome them to our Hild Bede alumni community.
The New VIII After a successful fundraising campaign, Hild Bede Boat Club has secured a new VIII. This could not have been done without the generosity of our alumni and friends of the college, the support of the Caedmon Ceolfrid Trust, and the fundraising initiatives of the Boat Club members themselves. Thank you to everyone who has contributed towards this effort. The boat has arrived and everyone is looking forward to using it. There are still a couple of seats available to purchase at ÂŁ500 each, as an individual, crew, or year group, or you can make a donation by visiting the Hild Bede alumni giving page: https://www.dunelm.org.uk/donations/hildbede. As the boat was purchased in part by a loan from the Caedmon Ceolfrid Trust, we would welcome your continued support.
The Winter Ball
This year’s Winter Ball went off without a hitch. Caedmon Hall was transformed for the Harry Potter themed Yule Ball. The students celebrated the end of term with an evening filled with music, real owls, fire dancers, a photo booth, caricaturist, a chocolate fountain, silent disco and much, much more.
Hild Bede Theatre Hild Bede Theatre’s annual musical will this year be
Pippin, which will take place on 20-23 February. A
journey to find their place and purpose in life, Pippin is a musical about an ordinary person on an extraordinary journey. Featuring a stunning score by Stephen Schwartz, composer of 'Wicked' and originally directed by the great Bob Fosse, choreographer of 'Chicago' this musical explodes this joy, magic and thrill, told by a mysterious troupe of Vaudeville players who promise the audience ‘a finale you will remember for the rest of your lives…’
Hild Bede Alumni Magazine Last term, we sent out our annual Hild Bede Alumni Association Magazine and would like to thank everyone who helped to make it such a success. We always love to hear what you have been up to since your days in College. If you would like to contribute an article for the 2019 Magazine, please get in touch with our Alumni Development Officer, Steph Maurel, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We would welcome either long articles on the history of the College(s) or on some aspect of your life and work since you have left, but shorter news updates will also be gratefully received.
Alumni Association Call for Nominations: Chair and Treasurer
Following the recent resignation of the Chair of the Association, Ms Beccy Hodson, nominations are invited for the following posts: Chair and Treasurer.
Members of the Association Committee are elected for a period of three years in the first instance. Meetings normally take place in College at a rate of one per term, although it is also possible to attend via Facetime or Skype.
Alumni wishing to stand for election should contact the Alumni Development Officer, Ms Steph Maurel, either by post (College of St Hild and St Bede, St Hild's Lane, Durham, DH1 1SZ) or by email (email@example.com), indicating the post for which they wish to stand and supplying a short electoral statement (c. 250 words), together with the names, email addresses and/or phone numbers of two nominators to arrive by 22 February 2019. Potential candidates who would like to discuss the matter further with the Principal, Professor Jan Clarke, can either email her directly (firstname.lastname@example.org) or else contact Ms Maurel to arrange a phone conversation.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Beccy Hodson for everything she has done for the Association and the College, particularly with regard to enhancing relations with the current students.
