25 January 2019
Save The Date!! This year, our annual Hild Bede Alumni Association Reunion will be taking place on 1 November 2019 rather than in September. The change in date is to give alumni the opportunity to meet the new Principal, Professor Simon Forrest, who will take up his role on 23 September. By popular request, we are also changing the format of the reunion this year. This will now take the form of a Friday night dinner, thereby allowing people to spend the weekend visiting old haunts in Durham and the surrounding area, should they so wish. The evening will begin with the Alumni Association’s AGM, which will be followed by a drinks reception and then dinner. We would love to see as many people as possible at the AGM, where the intention is to make important changes to the constitution. We will send out a booking form with the costs shortly. Don’t miss this opportunity to renew old friendships, share memories and make new ones. We very much hope you will be able to attend, and we look forward to seeing you in November.
Hild Bede is losing a Principal and gaining a new one Professor Jan Clarke is stepping down as Principal of Hild Bede at the end of August and will be returning to the School of Modern Languages and Culture at Durham University to work on a book on Molière. She will tell you about this more fully in this year’s issue of the Hild Bede Alumni Association Magazine, which is due out in September. The new Principal, Professor Simon Forrest, has 30 years’
engagement/impact work associated with the social aspects of HIV/Aids, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Gender and Sexualities, and the social sciences in medicine and health. He came to academic life via teaching, youth work and a short career in the Indie Pop scene of the late 1980s. He will take up his appointment on 23 September 2019. Although we are sad that Jan will be leaving her post, we are looking forward to welcoming Professor Forrest to the College. For more information, please follow this link.
The Summer Ball
Our students celebrated the end of term with the Summer Ball. The theme was the folk tales of the Arabian Nights. Students and members of staff alike enjoyed driving the bumper cars (some more than others), and all the students were excited about the main act who was none other than Tom Grennan. The Ball committee along with Bryony did a spectacular job organizing the whole event.
Our New SRC President 2019-2020 We will also be saying goodbye to Bryony, our SRC President for 2018-2019, who has done a tremendous job, working closely with students, members of staff as well as the SCR, and the alumni community. Bryony will be missed at College, but she will soon be starting a new chapter in her life when she moves to the Lake District to work at a boarding school as a Boarding House Parent.
In the meantime, we have welcomed our new President, Kesia, who has been settling into her new role very well:
“Hi everyone, I'm Kesia the Hild Bede SRC President for 2019-20! I graduated with a degree in Anthropology and Archaeology last Friday having spent the vast amount of my undergraduate career majoring in all things college with a minor in academics. I loved Hild Bede so much as a student having been involved with College Cheer (which I wrote my dissertation on!), HBT, Netball, Christian Union as well as being one of the Head Freps and Sports and Societies Officer over the course of my degree. I'm so excited for my term as President, am so grateful for this chance to stay at Hild Bede for another year, and can't wait to get to know you guys as Alumni and see you at all the events. -
