Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome back to Ruskin Drive! May I open by welcoming our visitors from Prestwich Heys, I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game.

It has been an encouraging period for the club since I last wrote a set of programme notes as we have seen better performances, recorded our first win and earned a point albeit off the field from the Abbey Hulton United game here on 17th August. We exited the FA Vase at the hands of NCEL, Premier Division highflyers Hemsworth Miners Welfare here at Ruskin Drive a fortnight ago. On the day there didn't seem to be a lot between the teams as we came into the contest 2nd bottom of our division and they were second in the tier above but we more than matched the visitors and after falling two goals behind recovered well playing some nice football and pulling a goal back late on through Joel Douglas, his first of the season and we were unlucky not to take the game into extra time thundering an effort off the base of the left hand upright with the keeper beaten. It was a long week to wait until we got back to league action with a basement battle in Shropshire at FC Oswestry Town and we came into the contest as the bottom two teams in the league table. Again the performance was encouraging but this time the result was to follow as well as Daniel Lomax put the visitors into the lead just after the half hour mark and not long after the restart Neil Weaver doubled the lead

Charity Partner 2017-18

before Shaun Brady put the result beyond doubt just after the hour to secure the first maximum return of the season and drag Town out of the relegation zone. Prior to these two contests we also gained another point as the NWCFL Management Committee ruled that the 0-0 scoreline at the time of the abandonment in the game here with Abbey Hulton United should stand and after the 14 day appeal window closed this midweek we now see our record having been updated and we have 4 points on the board!

We then moved on to this past midweek as we took the short trip to Sefton to take on Litherland REMYCA. The hosts came into the contest sat in the automatic promotion places tucked in just behind leaders Silsden who have a 100% record from their first eight games. You would probably have picked the side in blue as the team at the top of the table if you hadn’t have known any better as the visitors dominated large spells of the game and looked dangerous each time they ventured forward. The only thing that was missing was that killer touch in front of goal and when a long ball saw REMYCA counter attack and score against the run of play midway through the first half it was encouraging to see a positive response from Town all that was lacking on the evening was a goal or two to round off a good team performance. We move on to today’s contest against a Prestwich Heys outfit who haven’t been shy in front of goal having netted 13 goals in their previous two contests following up a 5 -3 win at Eccleshall last Saturday with a 8-0 home victory over our next opponents Daisy Hill on Tuesday evening. We will need to turn in another good team performance this afternoon and hopefully have a bit of luck in front of goal if we are to put some more points on the board against another team near the top of the table. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to a first victory at our new home! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

Chairman’s Welcome Welcome to our visitors from Prestwich Heys this afternoon. They have made an encouraging start to the season, whilst Town have yet to reap the rewards their efforts have deserved.

At last, we’re off the mark, with three points from last Saturday’s trip to FC Oswestry Town, following a comprehensive 3-0 victory over the First Division’s bottom team. In reality, it could have been a more comfortable winning margin, but any win is a good win, particularly when it’s a first win and, added to a belated award of a point from the 0-0 draw from the abandoned match against Abbey Hulton, St. Helens Town could at last jump out of the “relegation” places and begin to look up at some of the teams above them as a target for the climb away from the foot of the table over the coming weeks. Wednesday’s defeat at high-flying Litherland REMYCA was another bitter pill to swallow, as Town were dominant for the opening quarter and should have had two or three goals in the bag before Remy scored mid-way through the first half against the run of play with their first attack. St. Helens were still the better team for the rest of the game and Danny Lomax was

Charity Partner 2017-18

narrowly wide with a shot from 40 yards out with Remy’s keeper stranded out of his goal when he deserved to give his side a 11 draw. Another tough test today for Town against a Prestwich side who are pushing for promotion is hardly the sort of game we would choose at this stage, but all these matches have to be played and sometimes they bring out the best in young players and every now and again, they produce unexpected results. Last season, the sides battled out a 2-2 draw at Prescot in August and Heys won the return game 3-0 the night before New Year’s Eve. Hopefully, the teething problems with the ground are now being resolved. In particular, the small goals will have been moved away from the edge of the playing area and the edges of the area around the pay-box and refreshment kiosk have been re-surfaced to give the ground a tidier appearance. Spectators in front of the seats are asked to take heed of the signs in front of the stands and in the areas immediately to the sides and not to stand in these areas, as they interfere with the view of the seated spectators. If everybody co-operates, we can all watch the game in comfort. There is plenty of room for everybody. We hope you enjoy your visit today and we look forward to seeing you again. You won’t get better value for a fiver! Glyn Jones

Manager’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Ruskin Drive for today's clash with Prestwich Heys. I would like to wish their committee, players and supporters an enjoyable day and a safe trip home.

I would especially like to welcome Ryan Hutchison to today's game, Ryan is the assistant manager at Heys but before that he was the manager of one of the best under 21s teams in the area with Irlam and led them to the treble last season. It will be nice to see him and lock horns again. It’s been a few games since my last notes in which we have had 2 defeats and our first win of the season. First up was the FA Vase game against Hemsworth and we narrowly lost 2-1 in a very competitive game in wish we really should have taken the game to extra time. We then faced the trip to Oswestry a game in which both teams were looking for their first points of the season and I'm pleased to say that we came away with a comfortable 3-0 win. Wednesday night saw us take the short trip down the M57 up play Litherland REMYCA and again it was a game that we were totally dominant in but still came away with nothing to show for all the hard work we are putting in. We are starting to make our performances a little more consistent and we are just lacking the confidence in front of goal. Today we are missing a couple of players due to injury, Ant Whelan and Matty Smith both took knocks at Oswestry with Anthony likely to be out for 3 to 4 weeks with a quad muscle injury, I am pleased to announce that Alex Ashby has joined us from Prescott Cables and in the two games he has played for us he has certainly impressed me. He is only a young lad who loves getting the ball and beating his man and getting his crosses in; ssomewhat of an old school winger which we don't see about anymore. Enjoy the game . . . Lee

Commercial Corner Good afternoon and welcome to Rusk in Drive Sports Ground. Many thanks to this afternoon’s match sponsors – A180 Darts are our Match sponsors and they are joined by Ball sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and Programme sponsors Toast Café - your continued support is greatly appreciated. As you will see elsewhere in today’s programme we have secured match day sponsors for a large number of games but there is still plenty of opportunity to support the club with packages from just £50 per game. For just £1 per week supporters, family and friends can join our Goldline Lottery which offers the opportunity to win a £500 cash prize every weekday throughout the year. In addition there is a weekly draw (every Friday) for a cash prize of up to £5000. This Extra Draw Jackpot starts at £250 and increases by £250 each week it is not won; once it reaches £5000 the draw will be repeated until we have a winner! Last week our club volunteer John Cole was a lucky £500 winner. For every £1 stake the club receives 70p back; fifty new members would generate over £1800 profit every year. There’s a simple application form to complete and you can choose to pay cash (weekly or monthly) or by standing order. See any club official at

today’s game for more details or an application form. We will start to see a number of new pitch side advertising boards installed over the next few days – we’ve had some great support from a number of local businesses but as you can see we still have plenty of space around the pitch perimeter. A board costs just £200 for a full year and includes artwork (if needed), board manufacture, installation and an advert in our match day programme for the period of the package. Look out for the players in their brand new match day leisure wear sponsored by St Helens MIND – each first team player has been issued with a tracksuit, polo shirt and kit bag. Along with spectators through the turnstiles sponsorship is one of the club’s main sources of income and is vital to the successful day to day operation of the club. If you can support us in any way please get in touch. We are also on the lookout for match day volunteers – help out selling programmes and club merchandise or operate the turnstile; sell some raffle tickets or help steward inside the ground; maybe you could take some photographs or produce some content for the match programme or website – all these roles help ensure a good match day experience for both sets of supporters. Match Report Town Finally Off The Mark With Dominant Win by Kieran Ford A confident attacking display and assured defensive performance ensure St Helens claim first points of the season. The basement battle of the Hallmark Security League Division 1 saw FC Oswestry Town host St Helens Town at The Venue in a match that could prove season defining for one or both teams come the end of the campaign. St Helens were narrowly defeated 2-1 by opponents as they had lost all 7 of their league matches to date. Lee Jenkinson and Nick Robinson made 3 changes from that match, with 2 of them coming in the forward line. Shaun Brady and Neil Weaver, who both made substitute appearances 7 days ago, come in for Joel Douglas and Tom Potter respectively, with debutant Alex Ashby replacing Alex Hope-O’Connor in midfield who dropped to the bench.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare in the Buildbase FA Vase last weekend, and were looking to add to their encouraging 2nd half performance by collecting their 1st league victory of the season. It could be argued that Oswestry would be the Blues’ favoured

St Helens produced the first dangerous opportunity of the match, with a quick thinking free kick from Ant Whelan finding new signing Alex Ashby in space, the right winger flashed a ball across goal but there was no player in red on hand to connect. Some good pressing work from Ashby inside Oswestry half forced a corner for the away side, he took and found captain Liam Dodd with a free header but he could not get any direction on the effort as it went harmlessly

Price, his cross found Shaun Brady whose effort was blocked before Lomax stabbed the loose ball home. HT: FC Oswestry Town 0 – 1 St Helens Town (Lomax, 33)

The away side come out for the 2nd half looking to continue where from where they left off in the 1st. They were handed the perfect start as an Ashby free-kick from the right found the head of Neil Weaver, the Oswestry keeper Mackin thought the ball was heading over the bar which resulted in a belated effort to claim. The ball eventually looped in off the post to put St Helens in control. over the bar. Oswestry responded immediately as Jacob Farleigh flashed a ball across goal only to find Andy Webster who made a vital clearance. As Oswestry started to apply more territorial pressure, they were forcing Town into fouling their players in dangerous area. A trip from Owen Dursley provided Daniel Tinsley with an opportunity from just outside the area but his free-kick went just over the bar. St Helens transitioned play to the other end of the pitch and Danny Lomax produced a fine save from the Oswestry keeper Louis Mackin who somehow tipped his looping effort over the bar.

Lomax continued to threaten which culminated in giving St Helens the lead just after the half hour mark. The dangerous Alex Ashby wrong footed Oswestry’s Brendon

Oswestry looked to respond as Jacob Farleigh was played in down the left, he cut inside in the penalty area but was prevented by a terrific tackle by Andy Presho before he could get his shot away. Farleigh was presented with another chance minutes later, he skipped away from Dursley but his attempt could only strike the face of St Helens keeper Adam Fairchild in his “hi-vis esq” jersey. The visitors afternoon got even better soon after, Shaun Brady, now playing on the left hand side, picked the ball up inside his own half, he burst his way past the Oswestry defence, before firing in at the near post to give St Helens a commanding lead. Town’s confidence was flowing, and even centre back Liam Dodd tried to get in on the act. Lomax pulled a ball back from the by-line but Dodd’s shot was agonisingly wide past the far post.

St Helens survived a few late chances from Oswestry to claim a first win of the season. FT: FC Oswestry Town 0 – 3 St Helens Town (Lomax, 33) (Weaver, 48) (Brady, 59)

On this day In history The 23rd September has seen Town play fourteen competitive encounters across and a number of competitions and their ‘debut’ on this day came in 1950 when they completed a 0-7 rout of Horwich ACI in the Lancashire Combination Division Two. Four goals from Harry McCann plus two from Byrne and a Dillon strike put paid to their hosts. It was over a decade before Town would play again on this date (1961) and on that occasion Prescot Cables Reserves were dispatched 2-0 at Hoghton Road. Fee and Taylor were the scorers in a Lancashire Combination Division Two encounter. A hat-trick of wins on this day were secured in 1965 when Marine were defeated 2-1 at Hoghton Road in the Lancashire Combination top flight. Phil Stainton Fairweather hit the Town goals. Two seasons later (1967) Fleetwood Town earned a narrow 0-1 victory at Hoghton Road in the Lancashire Combination Division One. The following season (1968) saw Town get back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory in the same competition over Dukinfield Town (scorer information not available).

Another decade would pass before action on the 23rd September and Town returned disappointed from a trip to Witton Albion as our hosts ran out 1-0 winners in the Cheshire League Division One. Town would be in the North West Counties League by the time they played again on this date and almost 20 years had passed (1987). Goals from Deakin and Gledhill were on the scoresheet as Town ran out 1-2 winners away

at Burscough. Just a few months later Town would lift the FA Vase at Wembley! September 23rd 1989 saw Town travel to Nantwich Town in the NWCF top flight and goals from Corns, Aspinall, Laird and Shaw secured the points in a 2-4 win. Six years later (1995) saw Holker Old Boys visit Hoghton Road in the NWCFL Division One but goals from Clay and Pennington sent them on their long journey home pointless. Goals from Walker, Kirwan and Stamper earned Town the spoils as they defeated Bootle 3-0 at Hoghton Road in September 1998, again in the NWCFL Division One. It was FA Vase action in 2000 as Town made the trip to Yorkshire Amateurs in the 2nd Qualifying Round. With the scores tied at 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes Town powered into the next round with a 3-6 extra time victory. Terry Fearns scored a hat-trick and he was supported by Dunn, Cooper and Hennigan. It was back to league action three season’s later (2003) as Town ran out 1-3 winners at Glossop North End’s Surrey Street. Smith and Varns (2) with the Town goals as the visitors upset the odds. The final two occasions Town have played on this day have resulted in defeats – 2006 saw Town bow out of the FA Vase at the 2nd Qualifying Round with a 4-3 defeat at Abbey Hey with Ledsham, Hatton and Dyson hitting the Town goals. Three years ago (2014) Bootle ran out 3-0 winners in the NWCFL Premier Division. Town record on this day (23rd September) P14, W10, D0, L4, F36, A18

Charity Partners In the last programme, I wrote about confidence: its importance, problems caused by the lack of it and prospects for gaining it. Since then there have been many signs that confidence is growing. We were the better team in open play against Hemsworth, dominated Oswestry and secured our first win of the season, and lost to a solitary goal at Litherland despite being much the better team. Converting positive performances into positive results is the next challenge. Today’s game against Prestwich Heys is a good opportunity to do that: it was originally scheduled for Thursday October 5th, but has been brought forward to what had been a free Saturday. Without the change the lads would have had ten days between games, when they are playing well and I am sure keen to get on with it. Prestwich are flying high in fourth spot, but Litherland are second and we outplayed them, so there are reasons for confidence today. The rearrangement of the fixture is also good news for we spectators: we get another Saturday afternoon at Ruskin in September, when it will at least be light, no questions will be asked of the floodlights and we might reasonably expect the temperature to be above zero. We are hoping to take advantage of it by bringing our largest St. Helens Mind contingent of the season so far: some service users, volunteers, staff and even a donor – he

is paying a fleeting visit to his home town from his new home in Indiana; Sintellins loyalty and identity can run deep. We will be in our usual spot along the touchline near the corner flag, at the ‘Clubhouse’ end. Please do say hello if you see us. We will develop our presence further over time, as those who have been able to attend get the message out the matchday experience is fun, relaxed and friendly. We may even ask our craft group to make special banner for us. Whether our new ‘Music in Mind’ group can be persuaded to write a song or chant is a matter of some doubt, however. The season is young, hey? One of the main benefits of us coming to the matches is that it brings people from different parts of the St. Helens Mind ‘team’ together; some service users and volunteers attend particular groups and may not know those who go to the other groups; staff and volunteers enjoy being able to mix without having to focus on running an activity or organising anything; and trustees learn a lot from spending time with everyone informally. It helps make us stronger together. We hope to discover today exactly how good it feels to witness a win – Town’s first in the Borough for seven years. Back to the positive thinking… Ste Lingard Vice-Chair, St. Helens Mind

Match Report Miners’ Strike Twice to Eliminate Town From Vase by Kieran Ford A spirited St Helens succumb to Hemsworth in closely fought tie. On paper, St Helens Town were expected to be dispatched of comfortably by Hemsworth Miners Welfare in the first FA Vase game at Ruskin Drive. The hosts are sitting 2nd bottom of the First Division standings having lost all 5 of their league games so far this season. Whereas the visitors from West Yorkshire are in 2nd place of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, as they have only lost 1 of their 9 league matches to date. This expectation however was not the case, as the Blues put in a good display against the side 1 division above them. After a depleted Town side lost 3-0 away at Carlisle City in midweek, it was encouraging to see that multiple 1st team regulars such as

Liam Dodd (who skippered the side today) Joel Douglas, Danny Lomax and Neil Weaver amongst other returned to the starting line-up. These helped Town going forward as Hemsworth looked to oppose themselves as the favourites from the early stages. However, the blues held their own and created the 1st good chance of the game through Matty Smith, who himself was returning to the starting 11. He managed to control a cross well on the half volley before shooting wide from range as Town showed they were a threat. St Helens were also looking assured at the back, dealing with a Hemsworth attack that was only topped by Pontefract Collieries on goals scored so far this season. Captain Liam Dodd and the ever-present Andy Webster provided vital headers to stifle the away side’s dangerous crosses. Despite this the Blues were unable to prevent Hemsworth taking the lead just before the half hour mark. A corner to the far post from the left was met by a towering header by Hemsworth captain Luke Daniels to put the visitors in the driving seat. 7 minutes later, the away side delivered another hammer blow to Town’s bid to reach the 2nd qualifying round for the 1st time since 2015. This was bizarrely scored direct from a corner as Richard Collier deceived Adam Fairchild at his near post to send “The Wells” into the break with a 2goal advantage. Potter early on, Joel Douglas and Matty Smith combining well. However, as has been the story of the season so far, Town were unable to find the final killer ball to unlock the defence. With 7 minutes to go, St Helens were given a ray of hope, Neil Weaver was allowed far too much space at the edge of the area, he pulled the trigger but his shot was saved by Jacob Collier. The save only found Joel Douglas who was on hand to ensure a grandstand finish, a goal in which Town’s play deserved.

After the 2nd half began, the away side seemed content with their 2-goal margin and looked to coast to victory and return to Yorkshire with a spot in the hat for the next round. They did however create one meaningful chance early in the half, from yet another dangerous cross from the flanks. This time it was from the left-hand side to the back post but Hemsworth’s Nash Connolly could only skew his volley wide.

After this, Town showed the urgency to add to their tally that had eluded them throughout the previous 83 minutes. As the game entered stoppage time, Town received multiple corners in which goalkeeper Adam Fairchild surged upfield to take his place amongst the attackers. Yet his attempts were in vain but Town came close to forcing extra time as a last gasp effort struck the Hemworth upright as the visitors hung on to claim a spot in the next round.

Although they were down by 2, Town continued to look dangerous in attack with Neil Weaver, who replaced injured Thomas

Brief History Of Town The original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901 and played at Park Road, behind the Primrose Vaults public house. Although it was known as the Primrose Ground, the players changed further down Park Road at the Black Horse pub. Playing in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination, the team enjoyed some early success, but struggled after the Great War and appears to have folded midway through the 1928/29 season. The club was re-formed by George Fryer and a group of local businessmen in 1946. They took out a lease of the former cricket ground at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station and,

although it entered in the FA Cup in the 1946/47 season, a team could not be raised in time to fulfil its tie with Prescot Cables. Friendly games were played, then local team Derbyshire Hill Rovers were taken over in April 1947, those players forming the nucleus

of the team which entered the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. St. Helens Town soon began to prosper and early results included a sensational 10-4 win over Everton “A” on 6th December 1947. Former German prisoner-of-war Bert Trautmann joined the club in the Summer of 1948, the strapping goalkeeper helping the team to win its first trophy, the George Mahon Cup, which was secured with a 2-1 win over Runcorn at Prescot on 7th May 1949. Crowds averaged over 2000 that season, peaking with a league record attendance of 3012 against Burscough in October 1948. The following season, 1949/50, Town entered the Lancashire Combination and, despite losing Trautmann to Manchester City in October 1949, they won the Second Division title in some style the following season, three players, Albert Leadbetter (36), Harry McCann (32) and Terry Garner (31) all netting over 30 goals apiece. An all-time club record attendance of “between 8000 and 9000” witnessed a friendly game against Manchester City, arranged as part of the Trautmann transfer deal, in April

Charity Partner 2017-18

1950 and another 4000 witnessed a second match with City the following season. Although relegated by a slender margin from the First Division in 1951/52, the club continued to look forward, even contemplating Football League status and, in order to further its ambitions, moved to the former St. Helens Recs. rugby league ground at City Road. Initial crowds were encouraging but, despite success, the club decided to move back to Hoghton Road in October 1953, where they remained until April 2000. Town produced a number of fine players who joined Football League clubs, including Bill Foulkes (Manchester United), John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday) and John Connelly who joined Burnley, later transferring to Manchester United and who played in the England 1966 World Cup winning squad. More recently, Dave Bamber scored goals in all four divisions of the league with a host of different clubs, starting and ending his league career at Blackpool and in the last few years, Karl Ledsham, who had a productive career at conference level with Southport, Lincoln City, Barrow and Stockport County before moving to the USA. Following a second relegation in 1956, St. Helens Town continued to play in the Lancashire Combination, winning the Championship in 1971/72, by nine points ahead of Accrington Stanley. However, the formation of the Northern Premier League in 1968 led to a gradual drain of stronger clubs from the Combination and St. Helens joined the Cheshire League in 1975, becoming founder members of the North West Counties League seven years later. They held the proud record of being the only club to play in the NW Counties’ top flight every season until they were relegated in April 2015, conceding an injury-time equaliser to Silsden in the last game of the season, a match they had to win to stay up. Town enjoyed a golden era in the late 1980s, just missing out on an appearance in the First Round proper of the FA Cup in 1985/86, losing to Morecambe in a Fourth Qualifying Round Replay, but they obtained ample

Charity Partner 2017-18

compensation by winning the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987, beating near neighbours Warrington Town 3-2, with two goals from Phil Layhe and one from Brian Rigby. They were regular promotion candidates for many years, largely due to the scoring exploits of Steve “Pellet” Pennington, who grabbed 216 goals in 351 games, his season’s best hauls of 45 in 1993/94 and 46 in 1997/98 just failing to beat the club record of 47 scored by Phil Stainton in 1963/64. Current club captain Andy

Gillespie won the NW Counties’ golden boot with 34 goals in the 2015/16 season and netted another 24 times last season. This season sees Town in their third season in the Hallmark Securities League First Division, aiming to put behind themselves two seasons of inconsistent performances which have seen them finish some way short of the promotion places, despite some excellent results. New manager Lee Jenkinson, who served his time under the experienced Alan Gillespie, now has a settled first team squad and with the club having endured seven years of a nomadic existence, ground-sharing at Ashton Town, Ashton Athletic and Prescot Cables, the excellent 3G facilities at Ruskin Drive are now up and running and backed up by a strong development system, featuring Under-18s, Under-21s and Reserves managed by a top -class coaching team, St. Helens Town are looking forward once again to a great future. In Town Today The origins of Prestwich Heys A.F.C. can be traced back to February 9th, 1938 when a meeting was called at the Music Room of the Heys Road Boys School at which Elgar Lumsden put forward the idea of forming an Old Boys Association.

Attending that first meeting were messers Bridge, Stott, Foster, Taplin and Alan Proctor Bell, who was to become a central figure in the Club's history and whose progress he was to report on in the Prestwich Guide under the guise of 'Touchliner'. Despite the onset of the Second World War a year later, the Association flourished under the Chairmanship of Bell, who also acted as Secretary of the football arm, known as Heys Old Boys AFC and was acknowledged as one of the region's best. The team went on to win its first honours in 1943 in the Prestwich and Whitefield League with the Woodward Shield - a success which was repeated for the next three seasons. The team gradually progressed through the Bury Amateur League and in to the South East Lancashire League claiming Championships in 1960, 1961 and 1964. Under the guidance of Peter Gilmour in the sixties, Heys won the prestigious Lancashire Amateur Cup in 1967 followed by the one and only Lancashire Combination Grand Slam in the 1970/71 season with Heys bringing all four trophies available back to Grimshaws. The club also changed its name in 1964 to Prestwich Heys AFC, an acknowledgement of the fame achieved by the club as they proved one of the nation’s top amateur clubs. Thousands flocked to see Heys play, and beat, the likes of Sutton United, Ferryhill Athletic,

Finchley and Highgate United in the FA Amateur Cup with the clubs best run taking Heys to the last 16. The victory over Sutton United in 1969 ranks as one of Heys most famous moments, attracting nationwide coverage, coming a week before their opponents were due to meet Leeds United in the FA Cup. These were heady days but with the seventies came the onslaught of professionalism and the club struggled to maintain its winning ways. After claiming the Manchester Amateur Cup in 1972, the trophy cabinet remained bare as Heys negotiated the gradual restructuring of semi-professional football, moving from the Cheshire County League in to the newly formed North West Counties League in 1982. Ground grading problems saw the club drop in to the Manchester Football League in 1986 but the club went on to gain its first trophy for over a decade when the First Division title was claimed in 1988. 1991 saw Heys relocate from their Grimshaws home on Heys Road for a new base at Sandgate Road, just over the border in Whitefield. After relegation in 1996, the club bounced back with the Manchester League double of First Division Championship and Murray Shield built on the back of a record 19 league wins from the start of the season. After finishing runners-up to champions Royton Town in the 2003/04 season, the 2004/05 season saw Heys finally take the major prize of their first Manchester League Premier Division title. They followed this up by retaining their crown the following season with a 2-0 victory in their penultimate game of the season at Hindsford. In 2006/07, Heys made it a hat-trick of Premier Division titles and also lifted the Goldline Trophy after defeating Charnock Richard on penalties at the Reebok Stadium. However, on the eve of the 200708 season tragedy struck when Chairman and Manager Adie Moran died whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka at the age of 43. It stunned the football community and left Heys reeling.

Charity Partner 2017-18

the Gilgryst Cup Final. It was an example of the resolve that ran though the squad throughout the season. For all the plaudits for their football, they scored 91 goals in the League, Heys had an underlying grit. They conceded only 29 goals in 30 league games and kept a club record for consecutive clean sheets when their goal was not breached in their last seven matches.

Indeed, the following four years were marked by decline and successive relegation battles before, in 2011, Heys turned to former player Jon Lyons, who had played under Moran to resurrect their fortunes. Bottom of the table they collected 25 points from the last fifteen games to again stave off relegation. Heys continued to make steady progress re-establishing themselves amongst the area’s leading clubs culminating in a glorious record breaking 2015-16 season. At a club with an illustrious history the clubhouse at Adie Moran Park is adorned with the names and faces of legends of Heys past. However, the class of 2016 now proudly sit alongside those greats after delivering the most successful season in the club’s history.

So, the 2016-17 season saw Heys take their place in the North West Counties League years. For a long time, it looked as if promotion was possible but a crippling fixture list and mounting injuries saw Jon Lyons side ultimately finish eighth. However, more silverware was to arrive at the club as the Reserves won the Manchester League 1st Division title at the first time of asking, their third league triumph in a row. Winning the League by six points this was quite an achievement playing against the 1st teams of other clubs. Promotion also followed to the Premier Division - won by the 1st team but two years ago.

A first team treble and Reserve team double brought five trophies to the club, capped by achieving the long-held dream of a return to the North West Counties League after a 30-year absence. Heys won the Manchester League Premier Division by 13 points. More glory followed. The Bolton Hospital Cup was secured with a 1-0 at the Macron Stadium over Atherton Collieries.

So, 2017-18 sees the 1st team playing at semi-professional level and the Reserves at the top level of the Amateur game as the club looks to add to its eight trophies won in the past three years

Then, despite a weary performance, the League and Cup double was secured with a 1-0 win over Manchester Gregorians in

League News Hot shot Reds One team starting to gather some goalscoring momentum are AFC Liverpool, who continued their hot shot form with a 3-3 draw at Abbey Hey on Saturday. After losing their opening three games, in the six games since the Reds are unbeaten, and in all but one of those games they have scored at least three goals. Looks like new manager Chris Stammers is starting to assemble a side that will be a force to be reckoned with this season. Bullets beginning to fire One team starting to look like a formidable force in Division One this season are Alsager Town, who recorded their fifth successive win with a comfortable 7-1 defeat of Daisy Hill at New Sirs on Saturday. The only league defeat so far this season for Wayne Brotherton's men has been away at runaway leaders Silsden, and with three out of the next four league games at home, it looks like once again the Bullets will be well and truly up among the leaders in the promotion pack. Big wins for Remy With last season's exciting promotion chase still fresh in the mind, and the main players

from eth last campaign once again occupying the top eight, Litherland REMYCA's wins over their fellow contenders could prove to be decisive come the end of the season. On Saturday', Remy leapfrogged over Whitchurch Alport into second place with a 1-0 win, following on from wins over Sandbach United and Prestwich Heys in the past few weeks. There's plenty of football still be played, but it will be interesting to see how significant those results turn out to be, come the end of the season. Away days mean goals for Town One team who seem to be enjoying away days at the moment are Stockport Town, who kept up their fine run of form on the road with a 4-0 win at Nelson on Saturday. That's now 16 goals in the last four away games for Dave Wild's men, and it seems the hospitality and facilities they are finding on their travels are agreeing with them at the moment. Back to business for Heys A few weeks back, we commented on the fire power being displayed by Prestwich Heys during August, when they scored 14 goals in the space of three games. Heys then promptly lost their next three games, and only scored once, but it was back to business on Saturday down at Eccleshall, when they scored five times in a game for the third time this season, beating the hosts 5-3. With the temporary blip apparently over, we will watch with interest to see if Heys continue to hit the back of the net regularly in the coming weeks.

Charity Partner 2017-18

a total of 456 appearances for the club, and hardly committed any fouls, so you could imagine our thoughts about the referee. Nine defeats on the bounce from 1999 to 2008 was undoubtedly our worst run, and we have only won three times in the last 19 seasons.

League Landmarks There are five landmarks of note in the Hallmark Security League this week. St Helens Town achieved two landmarks in their 3-0 win at FC Oswestry Town. The victory was Town's 550th League victory and the third goal scored by Shawn Brady was his sides 1100th away league goal. Runcorn Linnets' 3-0 victory over Maine Road was their 250th League victory. Sandbach United's sixth goal scored by Boris Melingui in his sides 7-1 victory over Bacup Borough was their 100th League goal. Finally, City of Liverpool FC 4-2 victory over Barnton saw them reach 100 League points. Maine Road's FA Vase exit at the hands of Pontefract Collieries last weekend continued the club's unenviable record of defeats in the competition. For a club that has spent only two seasons outwith our League's top division since 1990, Road's record in the Vase is nothing short of remarkable - for all the wrong reasons. The defeat was their fourth in succession at the first hurdle, but that only tells part of the story, as the club's long serving (and as far as the Vase is concerned, long suffering) Secretary Derek Barber explained. "We first entered the Vase in season 198283, when St. Dominics visited Brantingham Road, winning 3-1. Since that game we have played a further 62 games, in 36 seasons, and our results have gone from bad to very bad. "The total record is Played 63 Won 20 Drew 7 Lost 36 Goals F 103 A 120 "We have had some marvellous trips, especially to the North East, and it`s a great pity that games are more localised nowadays. "The last two defeats have come against Bootle last season (who were top of our Premier Division at the time) and Pontefract Collieries who are at the top of the Northern Counties East League at the moment, but overall it doesn't matter who we play, we still generally lose. Let's hope the hoodo soon ends".
