WELCOME! St. George’s is an amazing building and 2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of St. George’s Chapel which was founded in 1714. We will be celebrating this across the year with special events and guided tours. On top of our running programme we will have a heightened series of events over the Easter period where our doors will hardly be shut leading up to a dedication and official opening on St.George’s day (April 23rd) We are also working with new partners so we welcome a show which is part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival and we will spearhead many of the events for the The Great Yarmouth Arts Festival in June which will see Sir Jonathon Miller on our Stage as part of 8 days of solid arts activity across the town. As well as a feast of shows on stage we are now ready to offer our Digital Cinema screen with Arts events being beamed to us from around the world so you can experience the thrill of the Globe Theatre or events from the O2 arena or the Royal Opera house all on your doorstep. With summer ahead we look forward to the sun bearing down on our outside plaza next to the Theatre Café which will see its first season of warm weather. Last Year’s “OutThere” festival utilised the space for the first time and showed what an excellent addition it is and with our patio open you can enjoy a cappuccino or glass of wine and relax and just take in the ambiance.

BY VICTORIA MELODY

AN ORDINARY MAN WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY TALENT

Commissioned and produced by Farnham Maltings Developed at Battersea Arts Centre, The Showroom Chichester and MAKE, Ireland. Supported by Arts Council England

The critically acclaimed Formby charts the rise of George Formby from awkward stable boy to one of Britain’s biggest stars of the 1930’s-40’s stage and screen. Ewan Wardrop’s tour de force performance brings to life the man, the music, his wife Beryl and all the characters involved in his remarkable career.

Victoria unknowingly discovered that her dog, Major Tom had prize winning potential at a charity dog show. She seized the opportunity to access the subculture of this exclusive member’s only club. Major Tom’s first show was a disaster, and feeling an overpowering sense of guilt about her dog being scrutinised, Victoria decided to put herself through the same process by becoming a beauty queen. This one woman, one dog show follows their story, reflecting on the British fascination with celebrities, beauty, and winning.

Spring 1881 is tipping over into summer and everyone is waiting for the silver darlings, the migrating herring, on which all their livelihoods depend. Gutting, salting and packing the herring into barrels is women’s work. So, young Molly must learn to tie her fingers if she’s going to join her mother, the obsessive Jean, and their fun-loving neighbour, Janet, as the third member of their gutting crew. But it is another tie, that between a mother and a daughter, that is at the heart of this award-winning play. Set against the real storm that sent 129 gallant Eyemouth fishermen to a watery grave, this is a deeply affecting tale of three courageous women, reworked to include a vocal soundscape performed by a local women’s choir. Get Up & Tie Your Fingers is part of Follow the Herring a unique national touring project that combines theatre and visual arts in an atmospheric and compelling journey down the east coast of the UK. The project welcomes the quirky and eye-catching, Coat for a Boat, knitted boat exhibition to St Georges Theatre. Join us in putting a local stamp of the exhibition by knitting herring, seagulls or local landmarks to go alongside. Visit the website to find out how to get involved and download a herring knitting pattern www.customshouse.co.uk. Follow the Herring reflects upon a shared maritime heritage and takes this tale back to the communities from which it sprang. Offering people the chance to share this journey with us, it provides a unique opportunity to participate in something quite extraordinary.
